True health is more than just nutrition, and with that in mind, today's episode is a departure from our usual topics. My co-host, James Connolly, is taking a deep dive into the field of psychiatry with guest Robert Whitaker. Robert is a journalist who specializes in investigating science and medicine, especially as it relates to psychiatry and mental health. He is also the editor of Mad in America, an online hub dedicated to rethinking psychiatry in America. Through his books, podcasts, and online media, Robert calls for change in the drug-based care of mental health that has ultimately failed our society. Please note that if you are someone struggling with mental health issues and pharmaceuticals are working for you, please continue taking them and don't feel shame in this. Life is short, and all people deserve peace and happiness. As serious "questioners," James and I try to give a voice to those who question commonly held beliefs, and Whitaker is a great example of this. Our goal is to shed light on topics and keep asking questions. If you're someone who has a different view than this guest, feel free to share, respectfully, in the comments. On this episode of the podcast, I am joined by Storm Baynes-Ryan, a New Zealand farmer and mother of four. Like many countries around the world, New Zealand has proposed short-sided government policies with the intent of decreasing emissions. And like other similar global policies, the science backing these policies is flawed and does not account for the impact it will have on farmers and rural communities. What is likely to happen is an increase in micronutrient deficiencies once meat is no longer available or affordable and the destruction of the rural way of life. What is often overlooked in these policy debates are the personal stories of farmers experiencing this firsthand. This short but impactful episode will give some insight into how New Zealand farmers are dealing with the new government policies. Episode Credits: Thank you to all who've made this show possible. Pipers Farm started as a 50-acre family farm in 1989. Peter Greig and his wife, Henri, wanted to raise animals in a way that was inspired by and respected nature and resulted in healthy food that they wanted to feed their kids. Now, Pipers Farm includes 45 small-scale family farms that share common values in producing food in a sustainable way. Peter Greig and his daughter-in-law, Abby Allen, are on the show today to chat about Pipers Farm's new cookbook - The Sustainable Meat Cookbook: Recipes & Wisdom for Considered Carnivores. This is a beautiful book filled with delicious recipes, gorgeous photographs, and wise words about sustainable meat consumption. I highly recommend it! Did you know that the health of your mouth is closely tied to the health of your body? It's true. My guest today, health-based dentist Dr. Michelle Jorgensen, explains how many of today's chronic diseases are associated with what's going on in your mouth and teeth. Michelle's story is a familiar one. After practicing conventional dentistry for 10 years, she began to develop symptoms that couldn't be explained or treated. She discovered her condition was caused by mercury poisoning from performing standard dentistry procedures. Not only did her research into her own health resolve her issues, it completely changed the way she practiced. One thing Michelle makes clear is how critical nutrition is to a healthy mouth. The Blue Zones have long been touted as holding the secrets to longevity, but one aspect of the “Blue Zones” framework that gets far too much attention is the diet, which emphasizes limiting animal-based foods. In reality, there are many factors that go into living a long, high-quality, and meaningful life. Plus, when you start to look at the research behind this movement, it doesn't hold up to scrutiny. Today I am sharing my conversation with fellow dietitian and podcaster Erin Skinner, founder of Empowered Nutrition, a functional nutrition practice in North Carolina. She has done extensive research on The Blue Zones and what she found was fascinating. Episode Credits: Thank you to all who've made this show possible. Our hosts are Diana Rodgers and James Connelly.
