“There was a farmer who I met. He had the craziest [story], but not crazy because it's happening everywhere. A hog horn rammed into him and he got a disease. No one had any idea what it was. He went septic. He almost died. And he figured out that his herd had gotten an antibiotic resistant bug because of the way he was farming.” – Chloe Sorvino   Chloe Sorvino leads coverage of food and agriculture as a staff writer at Forbes. She writes the newsletter, Mind Feeder, and founded the Forbes newsletter Fresh Take.   Chloe is also the author of Raw Deal: Hidden Corruption, Corporate Greed and the Fight for the Future of Meat, an exposé into the power and corruption of America's meat industry.   Nearly a decade of reporting at Forbes has brought her to In-N-Out Burger's secret test kitchen, drought-ridden farms in California's Central Valley, burnt-out national forests logged by a timber billionaire, and Costco's rotisserie chicken slaughterhouse in Nebraska. Sorvino serves as a steward on the Forbes Union unit council. Your fav host had to take the night off and left the office to her NOT so better half, Jabbo. A quick flick of the wrist and a few taps later, and we have an ultra stylized action flick like none other. Well, one that we had no idea if it would get past Nashon, so let's see how Jabbo did flying SOLO. Lol. Nevertheless, enjoy another scary, but hopefully great episode of Scene In Fifteen!

Today we're interviewing Chole Sorvino, Forbes reporter and author of the new book, Raw Deal, Hidden Corruption, Corporate Greed and The Fight for the Future of Meat This is a book that is a deep dive into the meat industry and its future. This includes food tech such as plant-based and cultivated. Chole's viewpoint is what I'd view as skeptical but it's well-researched and the perspective is much needed in this industry. Colored in this book is the quick 5 decade history of the scale-up of animal agriculture, the externalities in terms of how the meat industry acquires labor and the environmental damages caused by the tons of waste generated daily.   Biggest takeaway? The meat industry we know has quite a brutal history of taking advantage of and proliferating its tactic for world domination. Conventional meat is an innovative technology (which is efficient and huge slaughterhouses that kill, tear apart, and clean animals extremely fast) and has influenced how we eat and we don't even notice it!  But to be frank, this industry is only 50 years old. It's actually an amazing case study of scaling a premium product with huge externalities and we can compare this to similar things such as well, smartphones and social media.  Another key section in this interview is our discussion on the current climate in food tech Chloe has access to a lot of information and it was nice to get some perspective on what's going on. At the end of the interview, Chloe and I talk about some innovative solutions that she finds promising. Overall, highly recommend this book. I know a lot of our viewers who listen to My Food Job Rocks are interested in alternative protein but broadening your perspective is really important. I find Chole's book super informative from a historical viewpoint and her suggestions for creating a better food system are another potential solution for a better world. As someone who's worked in slaughterhouses, and food tech, and looking into various solutions to solve a lot of these externalities, it was refreshing getting Chloe's insights.

And what's come out have been a lot of ultra-processed, unhealthy products. They are using climate marketing to really make folks think that they're gonna be impacting the climate when they're eating these products, but often they're really not, it's really just surface level.” - Chloe SorvinoLet us debunk how farmed meat contributes to Earth's carbon in this podcast episode.

Actor Paul Sorvino had an absolutely incredible career with rolls in movies and TV, singing opera as well as his work as a sculptor and writer. His roles in films like Goodfellas, Romeo and Juliet and The Gambler are as diverse as they are fascinating but it was in Carl Reiner's 1977 film Oh God! that we are celebrating today. To say that Mr. Sorvino fully committed to this role is an understatement. He is dynamic, loud arrogant and very, very funny. The best defense against any virus is a healthy diet. Healthy brands are at a huge competitive disadvantage. Our food system was broken before the pandemic. It exposed serious inequities needing to be fixed. Start with helping natural brands thrive & grow. Over 80% of natural brands fail within the first year, I am committed to change that. Natural brands are on the front lines leading some of the biggest causes to improve our way of life and heal our planet. Important initiatives like championing minority-owned businesses, fair wages, supporting local independent farmers, and much much more. The deck is stacked against natural brands. Let’s fix that! This is largely due to so many inefficiencies in the food supply system, issues that big brands are not impacted by. Natural brands are also at a significant competitive disadvantage compared to big brands. Simply put, it cost a lot more to sell a natural brand on a store shelf compared to a big brand. Let's level the playing field and make our healthy way of life more accessible! Mira Katherine Sorvino was born in Manhattan. She is the daughter of Lorraine Davis, an actress turned drama therapist, and veteran character actor Paul Sorvino. Her father's family were Italian immigrants. The young Sorvino was intelligent, an avid reader and an exceptional scholar. Her father discouraged her from becoming an actor, as he knew how the industry often chews up young stars. She attended Harvard, majoring in Chinese, graduating magna cum laude in 1989, largely on the strength of her thesis, a Hoopes Prize-winning thesis on racial conflict in China, written and researched during the year spent in Beijing, which helped her fluency in Mandarin Chinese. However, she showed interest in a career in acting from an early age, and moved to New York City to try her hand in the City's film industry, waitressing, auditioning and working at the Tribeca production company of Robert De Niro. She succeeded in getting a little television work in the early 1990s, but got her first film job in the independent gangster movie Amongst Friends (1993), on which she worked her way up the ladder behind the camera to eventually associate-produce the film, and, more importantly, was eventually cast as the female lead. The indie production was well-received, and Sorvino's performance attracted enough buzz to get her cast in two more movies, one a more prominent indie, Barcelona (1994), the other her first Hollywood feature, Quiz Show(1994), and her skillful performances brought her yet more attention. An exceptionally poised and articulate young woman, she may have seemed inappropriate to play a crazy hooker, but Woody Allen took the chance, and her magnificent performance as the female lead in his Mighty Aphrodite (1995) proved her range as a performer and earned her an Oscar (at the tender age of 29) for Best Supporting Actress. Since winning the Oscar, Sorvino has continued to take a wide range of roles, including another stretch as Marilyn Monroe in Norma Jean & Marilyn (1996), co-starring with another very intelligent and skilled young actress, Ashley Judd. Forays into action and horror, such as Mimic (1997) and The Replacement Killers (1998) show that Sorvino is not above being playful in the film roles she chooses. However, what forever cemented her role in popular culture was her performance as charmingly silly California beach girl Romy White in Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997), in which she and co-star Lisa Kudrow utter one hilarious absurdity after another. She is most recently featured in Ryan Murphy's Hollywood on Netflix.

An amazing phenomenon is happening as we dig into another month of the "new normal" and Americans are looking for the newest and best entertainment choices in their living rooms. Recent original motion pictures which did not receive a long enough brick & mortar release are finding massive new audiences. Such is the case with hyphenate KEVIN MAKELY's indie Western, BADLAND (Cinedigm), in which he produced and stars alongside Mira Sorvino, Bruce Dern, Wes Studi, Trace Adkins, James Russo, Tony Todd and more. Hitting Netflix only last Friday, March 27th the Papa Octopus Prods. presentation is #3 on Netflix's movie chart and #7 overall amongst Netflix's massive library of offerings appealing to their 167 million subscribers. This astounding massive audience with exceptional word-of-mouth gives new synergy to the labor of love project Makely developed, fueled and actualized. The satisfying Western is, obviously, appealing to far more than genre enthusiasts with its especially strong cast, an entertaining spin and an a solidly crafted story. Directed by Justin Lee, Kevin Makely persuasively inhabits the lead role of 'Matthias William Breecher,' a man of few words, many bullets and lethally efficient manhunter. With his gravelly voice, formidable stare and confidant physicality, Makely establishes his tough-guy bona fides while portraying a Pinkerton detective hired by a slave-turned-Senator (Tony Todd) to track down war criminals who fought for the Confederacy. Indeed, throughout much of Badland, Makely's understated performance is an unassuming anchor for scenes with an especially strong ensemble whose colorful dialogue is peppered with memorable lines. Singer/actor Trace Adkins portrays a grandiloquent former general who, not surprisingly, would rather not be hanged for his wartime misdeeds. Dern and Sorvino's effective and affecting performances, are so emotionally and dramatically satisfying, they together forward the storyline via a chilling run-in with a violent land-grabber played by James Russo. 2020 Oscar honorree, Wes Studi figures into the mix as Breecher’s (Makely) not-entirely-friendly rival in the manhunting business Produced by Makely's Papa Octopus Productions (an amazing story in itself!) with partners Jennifer Ambrose and Shawn Nightingale, Badland is a Western in which te good guys actually have to pause and reload — repeatedly — to come out the other side. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

The Rocketeer (1991) d. Joe Johnston Starring:Billy CampbellJennifer ConnellyTimothy Dalton Alan ArkinPaul Sorvino This week on TMR, we flash back to the Art Deco past and get into a big fight about... well, exactly what Art Deco is. A movie about a remarkably mentally healthy Howard Hughes; angelic, heavenly creature Jennifer Connelly; an underrated James Bond turns in an underrated villain performance; and huge Nazi blimps fly over Los Angeles and NO ONE EVEN NOTICES. We watched 1991's would-be franchise beginning "The Rocketeer." Cliff Secord (Bill Campbell) is a cocky stunt pilot in love with a beautiful actress, Jenny Blake (Jennifer Connelly). When he discovers a jet pack hidden in a biplane, Cliff straps on the rocket, dons a flashy helmet and becomes the high-flying hero known as The Rocketeer. But when Nazis want to use the rocket as a weapon, Cliff must use his alter ego to both protect Jenny from an evil actor (Timothy Dalton) and save the day in this period adventure based on the comic books by Dave Stevens. Kaylin Karr and Nathan Montella of Scranton indie acoustic pop duo Skip Monday are only 20 years old, but they know what they want and they’re willing to work as hard as they can to get it. In Episode 20, they discuss how they instantly clicked as friends and musicians and developed beautiful, catchy songs that, in just a few short months, have kept them booked every week. Karr recalls how she moved across the country and spent several years in Alaska before returning to Northeastern Pennsylvania to pursue music with Montella, while he explains how he transitioned from drumming in punk bands to playing the cajón, commonly known as a box drum, in Skip Monday. They tell funny stories about meeting Sarah Palin and planning a last-minute photo shoot, and they also touch on receiving sponsorships and plans to expand into a full electric band. In The Last Word segment, we jump into the ongoing media debate about actor Paul Sorvino and “The Trouble with Cali,” the independent film he made using Lackawanna County taxpayer funds that may never be released. Sorvino recently blamed the media’s bad reviews and publicity for its distribution issues, stirring up even more controversy, so we offer our opinions and a few solutions to the mess. Professionally recorded every Monday at The Stude in TwentyFiveEight Studios in Scranton and released exclusively on nepascene.com every Tuesday, the NEPA Scene Podcast is a free supplement to the website, expanding on the arts and entertainment stories covered on the site and going beyond them to discuss other news and entertainment topics. Each week, the unedited and uncensored podcast features Rich Howells, NEPA Scene founder and editor; Mark Dennebaum, president and owner of TwentyFiveEight Studios; Lauren Quirolgico, commercial and content strategist at Lavelle Strategy Group and editor at TwentyFiveEight; and in the control room, Jimmy Reynolds, a musician, teacher, and lead audio engineer at TwentyFiveEight. Jimmy attended the press room roundtables for upcoming BBC America show Intruders. Cast and producers were in attendance and we chatted with Mira Sorvino, John Simm, James Frain, Julie Gardner and Glen Morgan. Apologies for the TERRIBLE reporter from HGTV at the roundtable with us whom manipulated the conversations with inane questions and literally interrupted the talent at one point to get another stupid question in. Lame and for shame! Besides that, the series sounds quite intriguing and it was great to get some questions in to hear more about it. Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love! Mike Doyle, currently starring in Union Square, joins host Robin Milling for lunch at Cafe Blossom in New York's Greenwich Village. Mike chats about his role over a delicious vegan lunch of Quinoa salad with house-made kimchi, tofu scramble and garlic french fries; with signature herbal-infused cocktails like Tootsie Tree Hugger and In The Weeds. A graduate of Julliard, Mike has acted consistently in television and movies. Most recently on the small screen he played an anesthesiologist opposite Patrick Wilson's brain surgeon in A Gifted Man. In Union Square he plays Bill, engaged to Tammy Blanchard's Jenny, who plays Mira Sorvino's estranged sister. Despite being called 'Superman' by Sorvino, Mike's all American good looks have not typecast him. The Bronx born actor also plays the bad guy, dying on screen numerously. He has been featured buying it at least seven times on various television series. Doyle jokes that he calls his mother after his death scenes just to make sure she knows it's not real! Mike has also starred on the big screen in The Green Lantern as Ryan Reynolds' brother and talks about a possible sequel. Next Mike can be seen in the independent film Gayby and will return to television in The Good Wife.
