Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Gary Fettke frustrated by the increasing number of diabetic patients' limbs he was having to amputate, started prescibing low sugar diets to these patients. But then found himself sanctioned by the Australian medical board for giving nutritional advice. Fettke was told: "there's nothing associated with your medical training that makes you an expert, or authority on the field of nutrition, diabetes or cancer, you're not allowed to make any recommendations to your patients on nutrition". It would take nearly five years for the decision to be reversed. Fettke's belief in the importance of preventative medicine began his lifelong research into the science of nutrition, dietary guidelines and exactly what makes a healthy diet. And he has become convinced that for all of us - not just those with diabetes - sugar, refined carbs and polyunsaturated fats come together to create a perfect storm in our bodie. That is why he believes we are seeing a higher level of metabolic illnesses such as diabetes type 2, heart disease and cancer, than ever before. Today's special guest is Belinda Fettke. The reason I wanted to talk to Belinda is because of the tremendous work she has done on understanding the vested interests behind the plant-based movement, that is exploding throughout NZ and Australia. I have shared a number of Belinda's posts and youtube clips over recent years, and we will link again to those in the show notes.Belinda got involved in this work when the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency attempted to silence her husband Gary, who is an orthopaedic surgeon. Gary began advising his diabetic patients to reduce the amount of sugar and processed carbohydrates they were eating and to reintroduce natural healthy fats.In our chat today, Belinda begins the story with how Gary's cancer diagnosis led him to make dietary changes and the low-carb, high-fat diet. Gary like many other medical specialists who have suffered personal health problems realised that nutritional biochemistry provides the answers. This is what happens inside our bodies. The other stuff is all on the outside of the body and is driven by a lot of different agendas. What a crazy honor to host these two warriors in the low-carbohydrate space! Dr. Gary Fettke is a retired Orthopedic Surgeon practicing in Tasmania. Although he has retired from his Orthopedic practice, he remains very vocal in public health advocacy and is currently working with a group to have therapeutic carbohydrate restriction included as a safe option in the management (and prevention) of Type 2 diabetes in Australia. He has a major interest in the preventative medicine and encourages his patients to lose weight before undergoing surgery. What really underpins our beliefs about nutrition and the food we eat? The truth might shock and surprise you! Our nutritional guidelines and beliefs about food reflect a mixture of cultural, ritual, and religious beliefs and biases, overlayed by financial gains and food propaganda disbursed by manufacturers. But the influence of the Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) in establishing our current nutritional guidelines cannot be understated. My family was part of the SDA church until I was about ten, so I have a unique perspective and background regarding this topic. And so does Belinda Fettke. Belinda dove deep down the rabbit hole to investigate the religious and financial conflicts of interest that govern our food supply and government-recommended dietary intake (RDI). She began her research after her husband, Dr Gary Fettke, an orthopedic surgeon, was professionally reprimanded for suggesting to his patients that they limit sugar to prevent amputations secondary to diabetes. After Belinda's work, Dr Fettke received a formal apology, and the legal ban on teaching patients about the dangers of excess sugar was retracted. Belinda has been a great friend over the years on our shared journey to cut through the noise and conflicts of interest and teach people how to get the nutrients they need from the food they eat. This is something we are both extremely passionate about. Empowering people to optimise their nutrition with an unbiased approach is crucial if we are to thrive and not merely survive. Spirit-led laity and professional ministers can resist compliance with popular ministry models of ‘success' and find ways to develop a practical theology that includes ministry to all for whom Christ died as the Spirit leads and empowers. The Spirit of God still hovers over God's creation. If that is true, then those who are mentally and physically challenged must be included in the life of the local church. People afflicted with debilitating illnesses cannot be excluded. Those who have been broken by caring for disabled or ill family members must be remembered. As a local Pentecostal/Charismatic Church develops a Spirit-led practical theology, the members may imagine a different way of ‘doing ministry' from popular models of success. Instead, as the Spirit of God still hovers over all creation, local Spirit-filled lay leaders and professional ministers can courageously and sacrificially minister to all created in the imago dei. Belinda FettkeFor more than half a century we've been told to eat a diet high in grains and low in saturated fat and instead of improving health outcomes the incidence of non-communicable disease has escalated. Discovering Belinda's husband, Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Gary Fettke, had been targeted for 'active defence' by the cereal industry in 2014 and subsequently became the only medical doctor in the world - 'silenced' - from providing nutrition advice to his patients; people with metabolic disease and the complications of Type 2 diabetes, requiring debridement and even amputation of their lower limbs, was unbelievable... In this week's episode of The Weekly Grill podcast series, host Kerry Lonergan turns up the heat on orthopaedic surgeon, Gary Fettke, who this year has emerged as a powerful advocate for a diet containing adequate amounts of red meat. The sense that red meat industry is under attack from powerful and aligned forces, and urgently needs to better align its own resources and “get off the back foot”, has been a central and recurring theme across the meat industry this year. An independent medical practitioner with no commercial ties to, or any financial interest in, the red meat industry, Dr Fettke explains that over the past 30 years he started seeing more and more complications arising from diabetes and lifestyle disease, that led to him having to perform amputations which he believed should have been avoidable. The further he delved into the science, he said it became clear that diets high in sugar and refined carbohydrates were the underlying cause - diets that effectively reflect the recommendations of Australia's (and most other developed countries') official dietary guidelines. He spent several years exploring the evolution of plant-based vegetarian guidelines, and has uncovered the extent to which powerful processed food corporations and anti-meat religious groups have influenced global dietary guidelines and policies universally in place today, which effectively demonise red meat while promoting increasing consumption of grain, sugar and carbohydrates.
