Michelle is an avid endurance athlete, she has qualified for the Boston Marathon 12 times, and on November 7th 2020, she recently won her first ultra marathon covering 44.63 miles in a 6 hour timed race. While practicing inpatient and outpatient care in the hospital setting, Michelle discovered a disheartening connection between the high carbohydrate, low fat, “sugar in moderation,” nutrition guidelines she was required to teach, and the rapidly declining health of her patients. In 2019, Michelle's health started to fall apart. She was experiencing severe muscle pain, spasms, and crippling anxiety. She decided to follow a low carbohydrate, high animal protein diet simply to see if it might alleviate the severe muscle pain she was experiencing. Not only was her muscle pain gone in a matter of weeks, her decades of anxiety began to fade. After reviewing the extensive clinical trials on a low carbohydrate diet, she knew she had to spread the word about this transformative way of eating. Michelle has written the book, “The Dietitian's Dilemma,” detailing how the current nutrition guidelines came into existence and advocating a low carbohydrate, animal-based way of eating as an option for individuals struggling with diabetes, mental disorders, eating disorders, sarcopenia, and heart disease. (2:00) Vinnie updates her on some of his challenges during treatment and how he had to advocate for himself. Michelle gives her and her wife, Corene's story. (9:00) An unexpected diagnosis turned their world upside down. They at least knew what to do nutritionally: the ketogenic diet. The American Cancer Society contradicted itself in its own statement. (12:00) Michelle and her wife saw over 32 medical professionals about the cancer diagnosis, and only one made a suggestion about nutrition, and it was incorrect advice. (15:30) She shares why a ketogenic diet is beneficial and what kind of changes they made in nutrition. Being in ketosis and paying attention to nutriton can help give you a fighting chance. The ketogenic diet isn't a cure, but it can significantly improve the outcome of many cancers. (23:00) What did Michelle do for research? (27:00) She understood cancer is a metabolic disease. They discuss how a vegan diet may make it hard to get enough nutrition. Michelle's wife needed much fewer radiation sessions than doctors predicted. Six months later Corene is in remission. (44:00) She gives more details, including how doctors didn't even ask about Corene's specific diet. Michelle will be teaming up with Dr Ken Berry for a new initiative regarding diabetes. Michelle Hurn put her anorexia into remission using nutritional ketosis through a ketogenic diet. That meant going against everything she was taught as a patient and as a dietitian. Now she wants to share her journey and help others achieve similar breakthrough results. But the path wasn't easy. In this interview, you'll hear how Michelle struggled for years to treat her anorexia and how she had to overcome her fear to finally try nutritional ketosis. As a registered dietitian, she now understands the faults in everything she learned and hopes to be a voice of reason for others looking for nutritional solutions to their health challenges. In this episode, Dr. Brian interviews dietitian Michelle Hurn, author of "The Dietitian's Dilemma," who shares her story of recovering from anorexia nervosa at the age of 12 and how it led her to become a low-carb advocate. Michelle discusses the importance of metabolic health and how diet and lifestyle can improve it. Through her own experience and working with clients, she emphasizes the benefits of a low-carb, high-fat diet and debunks some common nutrition myths. Listen to this insightful episode to gain valuable insights into improving your metabolic health. Avoid Processed Carbs and OilsProcessed carbs and oils are some of the worst things you can put in your body. Not only are they unhealthy, but they can also contribute to serious health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. That's why it's so important to avoid processed carbs and oils whenever possible. One of the primary sources of processed carbs and oils is processed food. Processed food is often loaded with unhealthy ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup, maltodextrin, corn syrup, canola oil, and soy protein. These ingredients make food taste better but can also lead to various health issues. That's why it's so important to read the labels on food before you buy it and avoid any food that contains these ingredients.Question Conventional Approaches To HealthIn today's world, it is all too easy to accept conventional approaches to health without questioning them. We often take the advice of doctors, nutritionists, and other health professionals without considering the potential consequences. However, it is essential to remember that conventional approaches are not always the best or most effective.Take nutrition, for example. For years, the dietary guidelines have recommended a diet high in carbohydrates, low in fat, and low in protein. This approach has been accepted by many as the only way to eat for optimal health. But recent research has shown that this approach may not be the best for everyone.Heal With Real FoodIt is vital to keep it simple and to focus on quality, nutrient-dense foods. When transitioning to a real food diet, focusing on nutrient-dense foods such as beef, butter, liver, and salmon is crucial. It is also essential to avoid processed foods and sugary drinks. Coffee can be consumed with heavy cream, and having carrots a few nights a week is okay.Key Takeaways[00:02:29] Low bone density in athletes. [00:03:19] Carbs and diabetes. “Your life can look totally different in six months.” Michelle Hurn received this hope-giving advice from her father while struggling with life threatening anorexia, depression and anxiety. Today she's a badass rebel runner (ultramarathons!!!), author of Dietician's Dilemma, and founder of The Protein Project, a movement to reduce food insecurity and improve health by providing, animal-based foods, nutrition education, and social connections to the local community and throughout the United States. Tune in to learn how Michelle healed herself by doing the exact opposite of everything she'd been taught. And how her experiences and advice about being radically honest with yourself can help you, too.Michelle and I both whole-heartedly agree that eating disorders (and disordered eating) are like a jail of hell hidden in plain sight. And that most of the treatment advised by well-meaning healthcare professionals is b******t. Which is no surprise given that most of the general dietetic advice is also BS. You don't have to be suffering from an eating disorder to experience the effects of poor or suboptimal nutrition! Most of the chronic lifestyle conditions people have today are in large part the result of consuming foods lacking in highly bioavailable nutrients (i.e., the animal based protein sources and naturally nourishing fats Michelle and I espouse). The average American adult takes 5 prescriptions daily and I can attest in my work that 10 is typical and 20, while not uncommon, will forever shock to me; this is NOT okay. My heart aches for those in this state: they're robbed of their vitality and burdened by disease financially, physically and spiritually. It doesn't have to be this way!Tune in and let me know what y'all think. Then find and follow Michelle on Twitter @michellehurnrd and Instagram @RunEatMeatRepeat. Buy her book on Amazon. And please consider donating to The Protein Project's Go Fund Me this holiday season: our most vulnerable citizens need nutrient dense foods to help support them. Do we not all already have enough/too much stuff? I'm all about a donation holiday season. So any friends and family listening, please DO NOT buy me gifts; donate!PS - I'm a week late posting this so hope y'all had a great Thanksgiving! This is a public episode. Many people try to heal themselves with changing their diet. But have you ever considered going full carnivore? Here's the deal… It may sound crazy, but at the same time it makes complete sense. Focus on nutrients. Focus on fat burning. And simplify the diet so that you can figure out what is contributing to your symptoms. Michelle Hurn is a registered and licensed dietitian with eleven years of clinical experience. While practicing in the hospital setting, she saw this huge disconnect from the nutrition guidelines she was required to teach, and the declining health of her patients. She had her own health issues, which sent her on a path of experimentation and self-discovery, going against everything she had learned in the medical field. Today Michelle looks, feels and performs better than she ever has. She's happy. She is an accomplished endurance athlete. And she wrote a book! “The Dietitian's Dilemma.” It is an AMAZING read. So whether you're completely confused about how to eat, relatively confident, or just want to add to your overall wisdom, I'm sure you'll get some great information from this interview. You can watch the YouTube video here or listen anywhere you listen to podcasts including Spotify. Some things we discuss: Diet and mental and emotional disorders. Balancing blood sugar. The importance of protein, muscle mass, and working out. Protein recommendations. Athlete recommendations. How to consume plants. And questions from our community: What about meat, saturated fat, and cholesterol? What concerns are there for women? How do you support digestion? What pushback do you get from the medical community? Michelle Hurn RD LD, Ultra Runner, Author of The Dietitian's Dilemma Michelle is a registered and licensed dietitian with eleven years of experience as a clinical, acute care dietitian, lead dietitian in psychiatric care, and outpatient dietitian. While practicing inpatient and outpatient care in the hospital setting, Michelle discovered a disheartening connecting between the high carbohydrate, low fat, “sugar in moderation,” nutrition guidelines she was required to teach, and the rapidly declining health of her patients. She believes in Food Addiciton which makes her an outlier in her field. Michelle was diagnosed with anorexia at a young age and was treated with what she shares was an IV medical refeeding, basically straight liquid sugar via a tube through her nose down into her stomach. She was told and believed that she would have to live the rest of her life suffering with this complicated relationship with food. Later in her life she became a an endurance. In 2019, Michelle decided to follow a LCHF, high animal protein diet to see if it would alleviate severe muscle pain she was experiencing. Not only was her muscle pain gone in a matter of weeks, her decades of anxiety began to fade. After struggling for years with anorexia, she discovered that eating this way also helped alleviate some of her eating disorder symptoms as well. As a dietician, she found herself in the ‘dietician's dilemma': what to do with her new knowledge of recovery in the face of information she was still expected to teach her clients - ie to eat addictive refined carbs in moderation? So Michelle wrote the book: “The Dietitian's Dilemma,” detailing how the current nutrition guidelines came into existence and advocating a low carbohydrate, animal-based way of eating as an option for individuals struggling with diabetes, mental disorders, eating disorders, sarcopenia, and heart disease. Today she shares her experience working in the field and trying to shake things up at low carb events. You can buy Michelle's book, listen to her latest podcast, and follow Michelle on social media by clicking the following link: https://linktr.ee/Runeatmeatrepeat
What would you do if your health was restored by doing the opposite of everything you were taught? After years on a high carbohydrate diet, intense running sessions, struggling with an eating disorder, and feeling the throes of anxiety & depression, Registered Dietitian Michelle Hurn knew she needed to make a change. Does the “One size fits all” food pyramid work for everyone? Are there other options, such as a low carbohydrate or ketogenic diet that may mitigate our risk for metabolic illness and restore us to health? Could this way of eating reverse diabetes, alleviate depression, pave the way to heal eating disorders, allow us to age gracefully, and prevent heart disease? Why as a nation is our health failing, and why aren't the nutrition guidelines updating with the science? Episode 445: Run, Eat Meat, Repeat with Michelle Hurn If you are looking for ways to become fat-adapted, then the low-carb, high-fat diet is the best place to start. It's a way to induce ketosis, which means that your body will start using fat as its primary source of energy instead of carbohydrates. This doesn't mean that carbohydrates are evil. We need them to provide energy to our muscles during intense exercise. You cannot rely on gluconeogenesis for all your energy needs. It has a limit, especially if you are training a lot. Carbs are an important source of fuel for your muscles and brain, but you need to choose the right type of carbs and add them strategically and intuitively into your meal for maximum benefit. In today's episode, I'm chatting with Michelle Hurn. Michelle is an ultra-runner, the author of the Dietitian's Dilemma, and a registered and licensed dietitian with eleven years of experience as a clinical, acute care dietitian, lead dietitian in psychiatric care, and outpatient dietitian. While practicing inpatient and outpatient care in the hospital setting, Michelle discovered a disheartening connection between the high carbohydrate, low fat, “sugar in moderation” nutrition guidelines she was required to teach and the rapidly declining health of her patients. It simply didn't work for her and most people. In 2019, Michelle decided to follow an LCHF, high animal protein diet to see if it would alleviate the severe muscle pain she was experiencing. Not only was her muscle pain gone in a matter of weeks, but her decades of anxiety also began to fade. During the episode, Michelle talks about how you can fuel yourself for endurance sports and how high fat, low carb diet can be liberating and beneficial to you as an athlete. On this episode, I talk with ultramarathon runner, author, and dietitian Michelle Hurn. After battling with anorexia, depression, and physical illnesses most of her life, Michelle decided to take a radical leap into a low carb ketogenic way of eating. The results? Mental clarity, a balanced mood, a boost in energy, and an overall improvement in physical health. I talk with Michelle about her life story, why this low carb diet has such a positive outcome on people, and why we have been lied to about the negative impacts of eggs, meat, and saturated fat. Episode 2026 - On this Friday show, Michelle Hurn joins Vinnie to discuss her relationship with food, her work as a registered and licensed dietitian, challenging norms, her book, The Dietitian's Dilemma, and more. Https://www.vinnietortorich.com/2022/01/the-dietitians-dilemma-michelle-hurn-episode-2026 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS MICHELLE HURN Michelle is a registered and licensed dietitian and has been for over a decade. In 2019, after following a typical low-fat diet, she realized her health was in shambles. She embarked upon a journey where she ate a low carb, high fat diet. This restored her health. Now she would never advise her clients anything else. At 12, Michelle nearly died from anorexia. She was then admitted to an in-patient treatment center. Even at 12, they fed her horribly unhealthy food and taught her all the wrong things. THE DIETITIAN'S DILEMMA When Michelle became a dietitian, Kellogg's, Unilever, and more funded the dietitian's association. Additionally, in 2021, it was funded by many including the National Confectioners Association -- they literally promote the sales of candy! Michelle could not unlearn the truth once she realized this was the right way of living. However, it did make sense to her that those who struggle with blood sugar should not be eating 75g of carbs per meal! Ultimately, she found out everything she had been taught was not true––and that's a tough pill to swallow. Now, she's learned that Type 2 diabetes is almost always reversible. You can, quite simply, turn your health completely around with a low carb diet. Previously, as a dietitian, she was taught to accept amputations as a reality of diabetes. But then, she learned this doesn't have to be the case. Since, she has learned a lot and has begun teaching the truth. PURCHASE BEYOND IMPOSSIBLE The documentary launched this week, January 11! Michelle Hurn is the author of the book "The Dietitian's Dilemma".As a health professional, the oath she took was to "do no harm". And yet, after several years in the profession, and after several challenges with her own health, she realized that as a dietitian, she was actually hurting people more than helping them. That was her dilemma: Do I continue to repeat the official guidelines that include having diabetic patients consume up to 75g of carbs per meal, or do I step out of that well-paid profession because it goes against my own values? She decided to quit her job as a dietitian, and in this episode and in her book, Michelle explains why. She also tells her touching journey as a teen with an eating disorder. In her book (which I loved!), she speaks about 5 main issues that can be improved with a change in diet (especially cutting out refined carbohydrates like sugar): diabetesmental disorderseating disorderssarcopenia (muscle loss)heart diseaseMichelle agrees that as patients and consumers, our power comes from being our own advocates and doing our own research. I think she's so inspiring because she was brave enough to step out of her professional and personal paradigm.Find Michelle's book here: https://thedietitiansdilemma.net/To download your simple guide to get more energy with less sugar, go here: https://aftersugarclub.com/energy-guide/Join us in the After Sugar Club here: https://aftersugarclub.com/asc1/

This was such a good chat!! Michelle Hurn was a Registered Dietitian working in a hospital setting and trying to get ready to qualify for the Olympic Marathon team. As she started to increase her training everything started to shut down. She was breaking out in cold sweats and developing severe muscle pains and it got to a point where she couldn't even run 2 or 3 miles. Eventually she came to the conclusion that she just couldn't run anymore which was devastating for her. Then she came across the ketogenic diet and as she started researching it she learned how much evidence there was showing the efficacy of reducing carbohydrate intake in treating diabetes and, even more surprising to her, in improving mental health. She read more and more anecdotes of people feeing infinitely better after adopting the diet. After further research she actually decided to try out a pure carnivore diet for a month to see what happened. Not only did she start to feel better almost immediately, she noticed that the chronic anxiety she had faced her whole life disappeared. This made her really angry at the healthcare system that had not taught her any of this as a dietitian. She decided to spend any time she had writing about it and trying to teach people about it. She was so frustrated that she was not able to tell people in her work setting about it and so eventually she decided she needed to get out of that environment and establish herself in a position where she could help people. Her book is called The Dietitian's Dilemma and is a great read.
