Government-guaranteed lending requires special expertise and back-office functionality that grows increasingly expensive for smaller banks. On the latest episode of the ABA Banking Journal Podcast — sponsored by Bix2x — Chris Hurn and Jeremy Gilpin of Community Bankshares, a bank holding company in La Grange, Georgia, discuss how they are tackling that challenge. “To start one of these departments is very expensive for a lot of rural banks and credit unions,” says Gilpin, “It's very prohibitive to enter the market space if you are a rural bank or even in an urban market where you do you know, maybe 5, 10, 20 of these loans a year.” Hurn and Gilpin are part of a team that has built Community Bankshares, parent of Community Bank and Trust of West Georgia, into a network of Small Business Administration and U.S. Department of Agriculture lending subsidiaries that work on a nationwide basis. They developed a model that allows the “the holding company [to] serve as a source of strength for the bank, not just the other way around, which is typical,” says Gilpin. Gilpin and Hurn discuss the company's role as a white label lender, referral lender, participation partner or servicer for smaller banks that want to connect their clients to guaranteed loans and the strength of the bank model for supporting these businesses and agricultural enterprises.

In this episode of Undivided Birmingham, Jeff Hurn of Alabama Baptist Childrens Home shares about the ministry of foster care provided by ABCH. ABCH was founded in 1891 by Rev. John Stewart as an orphanage after the Civil War left so many children in need of care due to the loss of their parents. Today, about 6,000 children are placed in foster care with the State through DHR. ABCH steps in to help DHR by connecting with area churches that have families willing to open their homes and offer Christian foster care as a ministry to these children in need. OMG. I'm geeking out for this interview. I've followed Michelle for a long time and just adore her story. In a crazy world, where eating highly processed, hyperpalatable food is considered to be “moderation” and a sign of having no food issues...Michelle healed her own body, mind, spirit, and athletic performance by bucking the dietician standards. Ya'll know, I love bucking the system. She's the author of The Dietician's Dilemma, an awesome book about how our current recommendations are probably not the best route for most people who need healing. In this episode, Dr. Brian interviews dietitian Michelle Hurn, author of "The Dietitian's Dilemma," who shares her story of recovering from anorexia nervosa at the age of 12 and how it led her to become a low-carb advocate. Michelle discusses the importance of metabolic health and how diet and lifestyle can improve it. Through her own experience and working with clients, she emphasizes the benefits of a low-carb, high-fat diet and debunks some common nutrition myths. Listen to this insightful episode to gain valuable insights into improving your metabolic health. Avoid Processed Carbs and OilsProcessed carbs and oils are some of the worst things you can put in your body. Not only are they unhealthy, but they can also contribute to serious health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. That's why it's so important to avoid processed carbs and oils whenever possible. One of the primary sources of processed carbs and oils is processed food. Processed food is often loaded with unhealthy ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup, maltodextrin, corn syrup, canola oil, and soy protein. These ingredients make food taste better but can also lead to various health issues. That's why it's so important to read the labels on food before you buy it and avoid any food that contains these ingredients.Question Conventional Approaches To HealthIn today's world, it is all too easy to accept conventional approaches to health without questioning them. We often take the advice of doctors, nutritionists, and other health professionals without considering the potential consequences. However, it is essential to remember that conventional approaches are not always the best or most effective.Take nutrition, for example. For years, the dietary guidelines have recommended a diet high in carbohydrates, low in fat, and low in protein. This approach has been accepted by many as the only way to eat for optimal health. But recent research has shown that this approach may not be the best for everyone.Heal With Real FoodIt is vital to keep it simple and to focus on quality, nutrient-dense foods. When transitioning to a real food diet, focusing on nutrient-dense foods such as beef, butter, liver, and salmon is crucial. It is also essential to avoid processed foods and sugary drinks. Coffee can be consumed with heavy cream, and having carrots a few nights a week is okay.Key Takeaways[00:02:29] Low bone density in athletes. [00:03:19] Carbs and diabetes. This week on the Patterns of Evidence Podcast, Filmmaker, Tim Mahoney, and Writer/Researcher for Patterns of Evidence, Steve Law, share special Mount Sinai related excerpts from interviews conducted with Dr. Deborah Hurn and Sir Colin Humphreys. What caused these two scholars to look beyond the Sinai Peninsula, into other areas of the Middle East for Mount Sinai? What evidence do they have to support the conclusions they've drawn and how well does that evidence fit the biblical text and criteria? Both Dr. Hurn and Sir Humphreys will be featured in “Journey to Mount Sinai II,” with Deborah advocating for Har Karkom in the S Negev of Israel and Colin advocating for Hala-‘l Bedr in NW Saudi Arabia. How strong of a case does Dr. Deborah Hurn make in identifying what she believes to be Exodus campsites on the way to Har Karkom based on wilderness watersheds? How do Midian, the Hebrew definition behind “backside of the wilderness,” records of ancient travel speeds, and the Wilderness of Shur play a role in Sir Colin Humphreys looking to Saudi Arabia for the mountain? Learn these things and more in this week's episode! ➡️ HELP US FINISH JOURNEY TO MOUNT SINAI II

“Your life can look totally different in six months.” Michelle Hurn received this hope-giving advice from her father while struggling with life threatening anorexia, depression and anxiety. Today she's a badass rebel runner (ultramarathons!!!), author of Dietician's Dilemma, and founder of The Protein Project, a movement to reduce food insecurity and improve health by providing, animal-based foods, nutrition education, and social connections to the local community and throughout the United States. Tune in to learn how Michelle healed herself by doing the exact opposite of everything she'd been taught. And how her experiences and advice about being radically honest with yourself can help you, too.Michelle and I both whole-heartedly agree that eating disorders (and disordered eating) are like a jail of hell hidden in plain sight. And that most of the treatment advised by well-meaning healthcare professionals is b******t. Which is no surprise given that most of the general dietetic advice is also BS. You don't have to be suffering from an eating disorder to experience the effects of poor or suboptimal nutrition! Most of the chronic lifestyle conditions people have today are in large part the result of consuming foods lacking in highly bioavailable nutrients (i.e., the animal based protein sources and naturally nourishing fats Michelle and I espouse). The average American adult takes 5 prescriptions daily and I can attest in my work that 10 is typical and 20, while not uncommon, will forever shock to me; this is NOT okay. My heart aches for those in this state: they're robbed of their vitality and burdened by disease financially, physically and spiritually. It doesn't have to be this way!Tune in and let me know what y'all think. Then find and follow Michelle on Twitter @michellehurnrd and Instagram @RunEatMeatRepeat. Buy her book on Amazon. And please consider donating to The Protein Project's Go Fund Me this holiday season: our most vulnerable citizens need nutrient dense foods to help support them. Do we not all already have enough/too much stuff? I'm all about a donation holiday season. So any friends and family listening, please DO NOT buy me gifts; donate!PS - I'm a week late posting this so hope y'all had a great Thanksgiving! This is a public episode. Many people try to heal themselves with changing their diet. But have you ever considered going full carnivore? Here's the deal… It may sound crazy, but at the same time it makes complete sense. Focus on nutrients. Focus on fat burning. And simplify the diet so that you can figure out what is contributing to your symptoms. Michelle Hurn is a registered and licensed dietitian with eleven years of clinical experience. While practicing in the hospital setting, she saw this huge disconnect from the nutrition guidelines she was required to teach, and the declining health of her patients. She had her own health issues, which sent her on a path of experimentation and self-discovery, going against everything she had learned in the medical field. Today Michelle looks, feels and performs better than she ever has. She's happy. She is an accomplished endurance athlete. And she wrote a book! “The Dietitian's Dilemma.” It is an AMAZING read. So whether you're completely confused about how to eat, relatively confident, or just want to add to your overall wisdom, I'm sure you'll get some great information from this interview. You can watch the YouTube video here or listen anywhere you listen to podcasts including Spotify. Some things we discuss: Diet and mental and emotional disorders. Balancing blood sugar. The importance of protein, muscle mass, and working out. Protein recommendations. Athlete recommendations. How to consume plants. In this episode, Shellee and Deanna discuss: How brain-based learning can help your child learn mathLearning math through other areas of lifePutting together a village of support for your children Key Takeaways: Math can be learned more effectively with brain-based learning, which uses cognitive science to identify how each student learns best. Nothing beats the experience of learning math from experts who make you feel engaged and empowered.Students sometimes struggle with math, not because they lack the ability to grasp it, but because they are not willing to do the gymnastics of thinking. Engage them in other areas where they aren't always excelling, it strengthens their capacity to think, solve problems, and strive to be better.Make sure your children have a village of support around them; when they are supported, they feel more inclined to learn things and gain confidence. “If you don't tap into the student's full potential and keep them engaged, they can lose those games because they lose that interest and motivation to really maximize their potential.” — Deanna Hurn About Deanna Hurn: Deanna is an educational consultant, thought leader, credentialed teacher, and CEO and founder of the Miracle Math Coaching Brain-Based Learning Center in Fairfield, California. Michelle Hurn RD LD, Ultra Runner, Author of The Dietitian's Dilemma Michelle is a registered and licensed dietitian with eleven years of experience as a clinical, acute care dietitian, lead dietitian in psychiatric care, and outpatient dietitian. While practicing inpatient and outpatient care in the hospital setting, Michelle discovered a disheartening connecting between the high carbohydrate, low fat, “sugar in moderation,” nutrition guidelines she was required to teach, and the rapidly declining health of her patients. She believes in Food Addiciton which makes her an outlier in her field. Michelle was diagnosed with anorexia at a young age and was treated with what she shares was an IV medical refeeding, basically straight liquid sugar via a tube through her nose down into her stomach. She was told and believed that she would have to live the rest of her life suffering with this complicated relationship with food. Later in her life she became a an endurance. In 2019, Michelle decided to follow a LCHF, high animal protein diet to see if it would alleviate severe muscle pain she was experiencing. Not only was her muscle pain gone in a matter of weeks, her decades of anxiety began to fade. After struggling for years with anorexia, she discovered that eating this way also helped alleviate some of her eating disorder symptoms as well. As a dietician, she found herself in the ‘dietician's dilemma': what to do with her new knowledge of recovery in the face of information she was still expected to teach her clients - ie to eat addictive refined carbs in moderation? So Michelle wrote the book: “The Dietitian's Dilemma,” detailing how the current nutrition guidelines came into existence and advocating a low carbohydrate, animal-based way of eating as an option for individuals struggling with diabetes, mental disorders, eating disorders, sarcopenia, and heart disease. Today she shares her experience working in the field and trying to shake things up at low carb events. Episode 445: Run, Eat Meat, Repeat with Michelle Hurn If you are looking for ways to become fat-adapted, then the low-carb, high-fat diet is the best place to start. It's a way to induce ketosis, which means that your body will start using fat as its primary source of energy instead of carbohydrates. This doesn't mean that carbohydrates are evil. We need them to provide energy to our muscles during intense exercise. You cannot rely on gluconeogenesis for all your energy needs. It has a limit, especially if you are training a lot. Carbs are an important source of fuel for your muscles and brain, but you need to choose the right type of carbs and add them strategically and intuitively into your meal for maximum benefit. In today's episode, I'm chatting with Michelle Hurn. Michelle is an ultra-runner, the author of the Dietitian's Dilemma, and a registered and licensed dietitian with eleven years of experience as a clinical, acute care dietitian, lead dietitian in psychiatric care, and outpatient dietitian. While practicing inpatient and outpatient care in the hospital setting, Michelle discovered a disheartening connection between the high carbohydrate, low fat, “sugar in moderation” nutrition guidelines she was required to teach and the rapidly declining health of her patients. It simply didn't work for her and most people. In 2019, Michelle decided to follow an LCHF, high animal protein diet to see if it would alleviate the severe muscle pain she was experiencing. Not only was her muscle pain gone in a matter of weeks, but her decades of anxiety also began to fade. During the episode, Michelle talks about how you can fuel yourself for endurance sports and how high fat, low carb diet can be liberating and beneficial to you as an athlete. She also dives into carb timing, fasted exercise, and how to match your fuel with your workout.
