The Interview: Like many readers in the States, I first became aware of Norman Ohler's work after reading Blitzed (2015), his epic history of drug use in the Third Reich. The Bohemians: The Lovers Who Led Germany's Resistance Against the Nazis (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), Ohler's follow up—which came out in paperback in the States last year—was born from some of the research he was doing for Blitzed. The book is a page-turning historical thriller I couldn't put down. It's essential reading for anyone interested in WWII history and specifically subterfuge.Ohler, who lives in Berlin, and I spoke last year while he was vacationing with his family on the island of Jersey. We started in on how he discovered the untold story of Harro and Libertas, two free-love provocateurs who ran an underground circuit of anti-Nazi propaganda campaigns, as well as formal espionage activities, from the heart of Berlin during the height of the Third Reich's power, and how their love story and largely unknown work to fight against fascism in their home country need to be better-known to the world. The Reading: Scholar and author Jeffrey H. Jackson reads from his kindred spirit WWII resistance book, Paper Bullets: Two Artists Who Risked Their Lives to Defy the Nazis (Algonquin Books), which follows the lives of two French women artists and lovers on the island of Jersey who defied the Nazis much the way Harro and Libertas did in Berlin. Music composed by Kurt WeillPerformed by Westchester Symphony Orchestra & conducted by Siegfried Landau
Jeffrey Jackson, professor of history at Rhodes College comes on the show to tell us about Lucy and Suzanne's courage in defying the nazi occupation of the channel island Jersey. These two lovers, having developed their avant garde artistry in 1920 and 1930's Paris, will put all their skill to work, when undermining the enemy troops on their island. Professor Jeffrey Jackson, author of Paris Under Water: How the City of Light Survived the Great Flood of 1910 describes how these two courageous women's paper bullets made the Nazi's question their own safety and why they were there at all. Episode #35: Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States and a preventable public health problem. In 2020, an average of 132 Americans a day died by suicide and 90% of those had a diagnosable mental health condition at the time of their death. All of those people had circles of family, friends, coworkers, classmates, teachers, and community members who are impacted by their death. In this episode, we talk with Leslie Nielsen, a mother who is now learning to navigate and live with this kind of grief after her adult son Ben died by suicide earlier this year. We're also joined by Carly Memoli, Program Director for Suicide Prevention Service who explains this complicated grieving process and helps us understand the ways that people find their way through. Suicide is hard to talk about and this show might be hard to listen to, but the more you know, the more equipped you'll be to help someone who is at risk or support someone who has had this kind of loss. This show is part 2 of a two-part series on suicide. We invite you to also check out last month's show, Ep. 34: Suicide Prevention for Teens and Young Adults. Broadcast: 10/3/21 Special thanks to Jeanne Baldzikowski for audio production, to Jennifer Young for research and outreach, and to Izzy Weisz for marketing and social media. Mercury is in retrograde and Cadillac Jack just has one question- what does that even mean? Donna explains the answer and let’s just say… it might make a believer out of Caddy. Watch out Geminis. There are a few great peeks behind the Big Radio curtain on today’s show. We’ve talked about things artists have to do when they’re up and coming. Sometimes a label will trade horses with a station and their artists have to go to strange appearances. Well, one time Caddy and Donna booked Brad Paisley to play in the service bay of a car dealership. Another time they just had to watch out for a certain artist’s bag, which contained dip, cigarettes and airplane shot bottle. You’ll hear both stories, plus how Blake Shelton found himself playing a breakfast show at McDonald’s. After that, regular panelist Jeffrey Jackson calls in to talk about the legal nuances of vaccine requirements. Then to close the show, executive producer Carl Appen has his own studio visit to explain NFTs and Martin Shkreli’s one-of-one Wutang Clan album. Questions? Don’t ask us. But do call us if you’ve seen Morgan Wallen. 7704646024.

This episode of Cadillac Jack: My Second Act is split into two very different parts. First there is some pretty gut-wrenching news about the son of Dr. Laura Berman. It leads to a frank discussion about the difficulty of quarantine for teenagers, but also the dangers of unrelated Big Tech. Above all, the message is one of transparency and communication. Make sure everyone you care about knows the lines of communication are open. The second part of the show is about Tennifer (that’s with a ‘T’) the Gorilla Glue Star. The Louisiana woman tried using the product in a way that… well, you probably just shouldn’t do. In fact, according to Gorilla Glue’s legal team, no reasonable person would even consider it. To look more at the case, Caddy and Donna bring in Jeffrey Jackson. Jeffrey is an attorney and managing partner at Jackson & Brubaker. He calls in to answer some of Donna and Cadillac Jack’s questions and offer Tennifer some advice. We’ll sum it up for you here: Good luck. Let us know what you think by texting or calling 7704646024. Follow Caddy on Twitter @atlcadillac and come out to Gallery Furniture this Saturday (Feb. 13) for some hot dogs. And Caddy. Plus both Donnas. But mostly hot dogs.

Amidst the danger of Nazi-occupied Island of Jersey in the British Channel, two French women, Lucy Schwob and Suzanne Malherbe, drew on their skills as Parisian avant-garde artists to write and distribute “paper bullets”—wicked insults against Hitler, calls to rebel, and subversive fictional dialogues designed to demoralize Nazi troops. History professor Jeffrey Jackson joined us with the history of the audacious anti-Nazi campaign undertaken by this unlikely pair. In this presentation, Jackson drew on his book Paper Bullets: Two Artists Who Risked Their Lives to Defy the Nazis to weave a timeline of Lucy and Suzanne’s resistance. Better remembered today by their artist names, Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore, he explored how their actions were even more courageous because of who they were: lesbian partners known for cross-dressing and creating the kind of gender-bending work that the Nazis would come to call “degenerate art.” They also had communist affiliations in Paris, where they attended political rallies with Surrealists. He shared how they were betrayed in 1944, tried, and sentenced to death, ultimately surviving and continuing their fight even in jail by spreading a message of hope to other prisoners. Jackson invites us to a compelling story that has not been told before, about the galvanizing power of art, and of resistance. Jeffrey H. Jackson is Professor of History at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. An expert on European history and culture, he is the author of Paris Under Water: How the City of Light Survived the Great Flood of 1910 and Making Jazz French: Music and Modern Life in Interwar Paris. He has appeared in documentary films and helped develop “Harlem in Montmartre: A Paris Jazz Story” for PBS’s Great Performances. She was a natural introvert with a brilliant sense of humor and an innate ability to identify and befriend those on the fringes. Her life's goal was to become a doctor, and she was just days away from graduation and heading off to college when she made an impulse decision to take her own life. Jill talks with her parents, Bob and Susan Wathen, about Hannah's life, her suicide, the sovereignty of God, and how He brought peace from unimaginable chaos. FMV is one of the most effective tools to present a horror game, as it puts the player in the center of the story and plays upon the psychological aspect of horror, which is one of the most terrifying aspects: the way it messes with your head. On the fourth episode of my podcast, Terrorific Talk, I talk with Jeffrey Jackson, the developer of the upcoming FMV/ARG Horror game, Daemon_9, about this very thing, and learn about his tastes in horror, why he likes it so much, and about his new game! Ivy League institutions are scrambling to uncover their links to the history of slavery. But the University of Mississippi—built by slaves, amid slave plantations, for slaveowners to teach future slaveowners—might offer the richest insights into the nation's unshakable ties to centuries of bondage. In law firms there is often a gap between young, emerging lawyers and seasoned veterans. Jeffrey Jackson, chief legal officer at State Farm, has seen first hand that there are long-term benefits to closing this gap. In this episode of In-House Legal, he talks to host Randy Milch about investing in mentoring programs and building communities in which budding lawyers feel free to ask questions and speak their minds. According to Jeffrey, law professionals who put effort into personal relationships will strengthen their reputation and build trust with their clients while also providing young lawyers a safe space to grow. Jeffrey Jackson is the chief legal officer at State Farm and has been with the company for more than 28 years. His specialty is in trial law and corporate governance, but in his former role as general counsel, Jackson oversaw all facets of State Farm’s legal department.
Today we are going to interview Jeffrey Jackson, husband, daddy to two twins (8 years old at the time of recording), salesman and the proud owner of one of the top 50 fatherhood blogs out there called Daddy is Best (dot) com. His entire blog concept and most of the content comes from a very interesting story that we are sure many parents out there will relate to even if you do not have twin children. Coming from his very rare experience of being father of twins and being older than usual for a first time dad (we are not telling his age, you can find it on the show!), having a bi-cultural household and dealing with many different people from many different backgrounds as a salesman we will get a very different and mature perspective on being a dad from Jeffrey. “Discipline is always probably the trickiest thing about being a parent these days, you never know what the right thing to do is.” We will learn from his experience as he shares some interesting key moments in which some disciplining was needed to make sure the kids understand the message and keep it while learning about responsibility and accountability as well. “You never know how you are going to be as a father, it is not like you are doing a job and you can see results immediately.” We will also learn from him that even as an older dad with a lot more experience in life there are still moments when insecurity and uncertainty sets in. But at the same time we will learn that there are better ways to go about being a dad and it is only a matter of trying things out and being wise and patient (remember when we interviewed Ted Hecks?). “To modify their behavior they have to be involved in the process and the way to get them involved is to make that connection.” Fasten your seatbelts and prepare to have your minds filled with a very mature, interesting and exciting take on being a dad. There is a lot of knowledge to take from this episode, we sure did get a lot from it recording and getting it ready for you. OTHER QUOTES: “The way I have evolved into disciplining is really just talking to my boys. Talking to them like an adult rather than like a child.” “Kids know what the right thing to do is. That is okay if they make mistakes, but it is important to allow them to make those mistakes.” “I thought I could come home and yell at them which would be the easy thing to do and definitely satisfy me but it wouldn’t get the point across to them about what they needed to do.” “Diversity dads you have to connect before you correct.” “If I am in traffic I have to remember that they are in the backseat so I can’t the first word that comes on my mind. I have two audience members looking at me that I am preparing for the world.” “It’s the constant vigilance of being a dad is probably the biggest obstacle.” “I always try to give them space so they can do what they want to do and make their own mistakes without getting hurt of course.” “Just enjoy the kids and let them be kids. Let them grow up and just enjoy the process without trying to be too heavy handed in manipulating their growth.” “We are all running into the same problems and we all have the same issues.
