Her stirring journey, from leading Fortune 500 companies to the brink of burnout, to a personal evolution and recovery, is sure to inspire. We chatted about her transformative five-step "Corporate Rehab" process, a roadmap that doesn't just restore but also reinvents individuals for a fulfilling life and career.Jennie and I also delved into the nuanced dynamics of gender roles, and how embracing both feminine and masculine leadership traits can create a powerful impact. We challenged the traditional definition of leadership and discussed the importance of crafting your own. The conversation took a deeper turn as we navigated the widespread impact of the pandemic on mental health. Jennie's insights into establishing trust and respect in leadership, to create a noteworthy shift in company culture, are especially timely in today's world. In our conversation, we also explored the criticality of aligning our souls with our lived experiences, and how compassion plays a pivotal role in the healing process. Jennie shared her perspective on the 'lean in' slogan and the undue pressure it imposes on women. Wrapping up our discussion, she introduced her latest venture, Ellevoy, an initiative aimed at empowering female entrepreneurs by connecting them with meaningful opportunities. 68. Creating a Better Workplace Today's episode is focused on the state of the workplace in 2023. Gallup has published a report based on over 120,000 leaders globally and their responses to various survey questions on engagement, stress, workplace locations and what they need from their managers. There are quite a few interesting statistics that came out of the report, and I discuss my thoughts on some of the results. In this episode: Global and North America Engagement scores are shared and although Gallup feels they are strong; I was surprised at the numbers. The three types of engagement categories that Gallup identifies and uses for the purposes of their survey and which ones had the highest percentage. The percentage of people who have stress in the workplace and how that impacts engagement. The impact of leadership and management on an organization's engagement. How is the choice of where people are working now impact engagement? Episode show notes:Welcome to another episode of Just Checking In! Today our guest is Jennie Blumenthal, bestselling author of Corporate Rehab, a book focused on a topic that is likely very relevant to many of our listeners: burnout and the “hustle culture” that is so pervasive in our industry today. Jennie spent many years as a top executive working with Fortune 500 companies, traveling frequently, and being away from her family. But one day, she had the realization that maybe she wasn't as happy as she thought she was. This expert today joins us to talk about the toxic side of hustle culture, the definition of burnout, the behind-the-scenes of her book, and how she became a coach executive that helps companies to go through a corporate rehab and start thriving. Join technology comms pros Becky Buckman and Keyana Corliss as they cut to the heart of today's tech-news cycle and the general craziness that is high-tech corporate communications right now. With a short, not-too-serious take on the industry - with plenty of humor and irony thrown in - they'll bring you the best in the biz, across comms and media together, for one-of-a-kind insights and perspectives you won't hear anywhere else!Jump straight into:01:05 - Keyana's connection to Jennie - “When I talked to Jenny for the first time, it was like she peered into my soul.”02:32 - Women in tech & burnout - “In light of some of the things we've seen in the news over the last, like six months, even week about really prominent women in our industry in tech, taking a step back.”07:58 - For Fortune 500 execute to burnout - “The longer I had to sit in the quiet of how exactly did I get here and how when I was building this life, that's everything we're taught to go after and women can be anything. How did I wind up in a place where I felt so empty? and I felt like. This wasn't what I wanted”10:04 - The toxic side of hustle culture - “We get caught in this, ‘I have to keep going', ‘I have to go even faster', and then our relaxation time doesn't actually refuel us. It's just another way of overstimulation.”12:13 - What's burnout? - “We're all part of. So it's not just you aren't doing it right and if you just run faster, you'll outrun your burnout. It's something that's increasing in the pace within our own culture.”15:00 - Women burnout stories - “And as I started talking to other women and they started contributing their stories, I was shocked at how much we'll tolerate before, we'll actually seek help or try to find a solution.” 18:10 - Intro to hustle culture research - “ It really was this constant performance and productivity mentality, that I noticed across, and that was the first piece. The second really was really got what got me to this whole concept of going from survival into thriving, and that is survival mentality is really based on the scarcity mentality.” 23:11 - Corporate rehab - “It's about, is understanding what are the patterns and the mindsets and the behaviors that you're wired for or that you've picked up over time, might have served you earlier in your career. That it's time to reevaluate and sit down so that you can actually thrive.”30:03 - Burnout in comms departments - “We are not surgeons, no one dies. But there is still a lot of pressure, I think, in terms of the fact that our job does really, influence people's lives in a respect and there's a lot to that.”34:30 - The hardest part of healing - “So much of what I would have said I missed were things that I found through my own healing journey, we're actually unhealthy attachments.”Episode resources:Jennie Blumenthal's...

52. Ditch the Hustle and Thrive Again (with Jennie Blumenthal) After spending 20 years in Corporate America helping Fortune 500 companies manage multi-million-dollar growth strategies, Jennie left her partnership in a global consulting firm to launch her own leadership company. In addition to her role as CEO, she also serves as a professional speaker, an Adjunct Professor in Strategy, a Board member, and the author of Corporate Rehab: Ditch the Hustle Culture and Thrive Again. Her coaching and speaking business focus on female executives looking to reach the next level of leadership and thrive in the future of work without losing themselves in the process, and on companies interested in building human-centered cultures. She lives in Washington, DC with her husband, two kids, and puppy, and is trying to enjoy this chance to rewrite the next chapter of her career and life by running 10 miles, learning poetry, and joining an adult ice hockey league. In this episode:  She talks about her own experience with burnout that led her to leave her corporate job, write the book and start her company. How the pandemic helped her to realize that she didn't have to follow along with what she thought she had to do, even though it didn't make her as happy. Jennie talks about the 300 interviews that she did for her book, Corporate Rehab, and the learnings she gained through that process. The role of culture, society and families that may have impacted to the “shoulds” that we all thing we need to follow. She describes the hustle culture as an addiction that many people are living in every day. The differences between generations and the things that each generation has gone through and the impact to security, risk, meaning and purpose for each person. Stress is being internalized by women and how it is showing up in their bodies…it has pointed them to changing the way that they look at their jobs, their value, and their lives. She walked through her REHAB framework process that she uses with women who work with her to break the habit of the hustle culture. The workplace is designed for men based on when it was first built in the industrial revolution and how that impacts women today. Most people think that once you've hit the big role at your company, it's smooth sailing. The reality is far different.   C-suite positions often have hardships, and many executives deal with a lot of stress and difficulty in their job. Once you stop and realize that corporate life isn't fulfilling for you, how do you move on? On this episode, Jennie Blumenthal, founder and CEO of Corporate Rehab joins us to share her journey from executive to entrepreneur, and how she uses what she learned through more than 20 years in corporate America to help others find their way. Jennie's also the author of Corporate Rehab: Ditch the Hustle Culture and Thrive Again, and we're fortunate to have her share her insights with us, today. During the Pandemic, Jennie was able to take a moment to stop and think about the corporate ladder she had been climbing. She stopped and asked herself, “Where is this going?” - and the answer was not one she liked. Following her heart, Jennie left her corporate job and started the journey of a thought leader, founding Corporate Rehab to help others in the same position. Jennie shares the hardships of  the transition from corporate exec to entrepreneur, and how she needed to be brutally honest with herself about what she wanted to achieve, where she wanted to spend her time, and what it was better to outsource. While thought leadership played a role in Jennie's corporate position, she explains how it becomes so much more important for entrepreneurs. Without a big brand behind you, you need to produce quality content that shows your unique perspective, and find a way to share it so that others will lean in and listen to your insights. Jennie shares valuable advice for people looking to leave corporate life, or those who already have - and are still struggling to find their way. Three Key Takeaways: * Once you are out on your own you need to think hard about what your voice is and how you'll use it to impact your audience. * As an entrepreneur you won't be able to outspend big companies but thought leadership is the equalizer that lets you outthink them. * Thought Leadership content can be used to build a rapport and relationship with an audience that will have value even if they are not in a buying position.

The more she heard from other women that felt the same way, she knew she had to do something. This is how Corporate Rehab was born.
