You have to at least respect people, acknowledge people, and meet them where they are at. Set a direction in your own life and open your mind to new experiences. Fuel your journey with love and have a mindset that focuses on growth. We have habits of fear that are deeply embedded within us because of the experiences that we had in the past. We must bring awareness into those deep things about ourselves so that we don't transfer any anger or fear to other people. You need to cultivate an atmosphere of safety where people can talk honestly about what they feel. People will be encouraged to open up when leaders make an effort to reach out.  "Number one job of a leader is to build other leaders even if that means just to help them be a leader of themselves in their life." —  Andy McDowell See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I  Connect with Andy McDowell:  Website: http://www.generateyourvalue.com/Email: andy@generateyourvalue.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/genyourvaluePodcast: https://www.generateyourvalue.com/copy-of-podcast Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370  Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Organizations may often think of change, but they are also often not serious about actually changing. When it comes down to making changes, where the rubber hits the proverbial road and orgs have to consider resourcing, people, budgets and time horizons, the reality of what it takes to change runs up against actual desire to change. Change can be even more difficult when things seem to be going well. Why change when we don't need to? Because when things are going well, it might be the best time to start thinking about changes.Andy McDowell, of Generate Your Value, stops by the Experience by Design studios to talk about how self-transformation is the key to making transformative experiences. The mission of Andy's company is "to serve as a powerful catalyst for entrepreneurs to experience extraordinary success in business and life.” To help clients achieve this transformation, he applies organizational change and innovation strategies to individual lives. We talk about how going to and then leaving Boeing lead to his own realization of achieving individual change. We also chat about how it is hard to be heard within your own organization when trying to lead innovation and change initiatives. Anyone who has tried to be recognized and ended up being ignored knows what this feels like. We discuss his own challenges in Boeing to be heard, how he uses this experience to fuel his own work, and how that work has translated into helping others to transform their own work and lives.

The PurposeGirl Podcast: Empowering women to live their purpose with courage, joy, and fierce self-love.

That inner voice is calling to you – will you answer? Inside each of us is the call of the Goddess, or as I like to say, a purpose; something we were all meant to do and meant to be. This call is powerful beyond measure, and if you listen to it and really pay attention to what is being told to you, it will not only guide your life, but provide the opportunity, too. This has manifested for me in creating PurposeGirls – my calling is to inspire, and to light women up. Today's incredible, passionate, brilliant guest has listened to her calling – as she says – from the moment she could think. Nicole Ansari is an award-winning actor, director, writer and producer who has been living her purpose since before she even knew it was an active decision to do so. When you live in alignment, the opportunities come – and Nicole is the living example of that happening. In this episode, Nicole and I talk about: Nicole's incredible journey of discovering her calling, answering the damn phone, and living it every day. How to learn to understand the signals you are getting – both internal and external - so you can find and live in your own calling and purpose. Positive evidence of someone who has found success – even in a potentially challenging industry! – living in her purpose, so you know you can also live in yours. Juicy details about Nicole's newest project:   About Nicole Ansari: Nicole Ansari's professional life began in her teens as an actor in Tatort, an iconic German Cop TV series. Ansari studied with the late legendary Uta Hagen, of HB Studios, with Susan Batson at the Actors Studio in NYC and at the Stage School of Dance and Drama in Hamburg. After two feature films for German TV, her first professional engagement was with the Repertory company Neumarkt Theater in Zurich. Following this, she joined the famed Théâtre du Soleil under the direction of Ariane Mnouchkine, in Paris and on a European tour. Her next steps led to being a guest star at the Public Theatre in Vienna in leading roles, multiple arthouse movies and TV shows, including HBO's Deadwood. She continued on to London's West End and Broadway, performing with her husband Brian Cox, and eventually creating a home base in New York. Ansari co-produced two feature Films; “Blumenthal”, a comedy in the New York Theatre world, starring her husband Brian Cox and the thriller “As Good As Dead” with Andy McDowell. Adding to her CV as Co-producer + director, is the short documentary “Padim at PS3” about the Arts program in a NYC public school and the web series “Messy”. Messy has garnered numerous awards on the festival circuit including Best Director and Best Dramedy at the British Web Awards; Best Web Series at the NY International Film Awards, and best Web Series at the Chicago Independent Film Awards. As a director, Nicole also worked with the Rubin Museum of Art and NY Women in Film. Ansari's lifelong interest in the healing arts brought her to study and train with some of the great teachers of our time. She is a certified Yoga Therapist, Kundalini Yoga, Pre and Postnatal Yoga Instructor, a Life Coach, Theta healing practitioner and a feminine movement teacher. She also has an online Hemp business. Storytelling, for her, is a healing art and she has been merging her interests in helping others to live a passionate life fueled by their wild, authentic self. Nicole has created ACTORS RISING, a program for actors and speakers merging the spiritual path with the Arts. When Life Gives You Parkinson's

When Life Gives You Parkinson's

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 6, 2019 31:32

I am in Kyoto, Japan for the 5th World Parkinson Congress (WPC). WPC is a global Parkinson's event, which is held every three years and it opens its doors to all members of the Parkinson's community, from neurologists and researchers to those living with the disease.    Parkinson’s has often been described as an old, white man’s disease. The truth is Parkinson’s is not that exclusive of a club. In fact, three things are very clear in Kyoto as the WPC wraps up day three: young people, women and people of all colours are being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. During a roundtable discussion on this episode of the podcast, Jim Smerdon, a person with Parkinson’s from Vancouver, B.C., noticed how indiscriminate PD is on the first day. “My question to all of these researchers, and I’ve yet to receive a decent answer, is what does it mean to them that when you looked around at the opening ceremonies and there is such a diversity. This disease covers every ethnicity, every geography, every demographic, every age core, and almost appears equally.”   A perfect example of just how diverse people with Parkinson’s can be. One of Omotola Thomas’ doctors in South Africa told her, “I think you have a form of Parkinsonism, but it’s hard for me to diagnose you with it because you are a young, black, female and this is an old, white man’s disease.” Thomas was born and raised in Nigeria. She lived in the United States, South Africa and now the United Kingdom. She began to have symptoms while in America at the age of 29. They took blood and ran every test they could think of, but because she the opposite of old, white and male Parkinson’s wasn’t initially considered. It took six years, seemingly endless tests, a move to South Africa and then to the U.K., before she was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s disease (YOPD) at the age of 35.   The time has come for a new narrative around Parkinson’s. Perhaps it could begin with an update to the old, white man sketched by neurologist Sir William Richard Gowers in 1886 to illustrate some physical symptoms of PD. It appears in Wikipedia and anytime anyone Google’s Parkinson’s disease. Another suggestion, which was a Hot Topic in the morning session, is to begin to address the needs and differences that exist between woman and men with Parkinson’s. Thomas, and women like her, have a different Parkinson’s experience. For instance, their Levodopa-Carbidopa to control Parkinson’s symptoms only works about three weeks out of every four. “Men don’t tend to suffer the same hormonal fluctuations that we do. We have certain times of the month where our medications don’t work at all. And that is very difficult to deal with.” Thomas adds, “I don’t think that’s something you experience.” She’s right. I don’t. The frustrations concerning the old, white, male stereotypes are real. Treating PD the same way, with the same drugs, no matter your gender, age or ethnicity – let alone your dominate symptoms – leads to delayed diagnosis and to prescribing inadequate pharmaceuticals. A 2019 attitude and individualized approach to each person’s Parkinson’s is desperately needed. And the whispers of past WPC’s are becoming a roar that the PD community will soon be unable to ignore any longer.  Also on this episode, kids and care partners play a prominent role in the topics and discussions at World Parkinson Congress.  Follow me, Larry Gifford  Twitter: @ParkinsonsPod Facebook: Facebook.com/ParkinsonsPod Instagram: @parkinsonspodirt For more info on the World Parkinson Congress head to www.WPC2019.org Facebook: Facebook.com/WorldPDCongress/ Twitter: @WorldPDCongress YouTube: WorldPDcongress Instagram: @worldpdcongress Thank you to: Omotola Thomas, person with Parkinson’s from United Kingdom Jim Smerdon, person with Parkinson’s from Vancouver, B.C.
