A conversation with two veterans of American wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan – about their work with “We Are Not Your Soldiers” – informing high school and college students about the morally unpleasant truths of the US military. In 2008 the anti-war organization – “World Can't Wait” -- invited American war veterans to share their military experiences with high school and college students – challenging the American culture's overly positive patriotic narratives.Joe Urgo grew up in a white conservative, middle-class NYC neighborhood. He tells young Americans about his experiences in Vietnam in the US Air Force. In 1971 -- Mr. Urgo helped organize the Winter Soldier Investigation detailing the war crimes of American soldiers in Vietnam and Cambodia. Shaniyat Turani-Chowdhury is a freelance investigative journalist living in Queens, NY. He writes about Middle East politics, war and climate change – and most recently reported on the effect of Israeli airstrikes on the Lebanese people. On this episode of the Free Thought Project Podcast, join hosts Matt and Don as they engage in a deeply enlightening conversation with veterans Will Griffin and Joe Urgo, the driving forces behind "We Are Not Your Soldiers." This organization boldly stands as a counter-narrative to the enticing pitches of military recruiters. Through the lens of their own profound transformations, Will and Joe unfold their mission of journeying into schools, aiming to dissuade the youth from the path of military enlistment. This episode delves into the heart-wrenching statistics of high veteran and military suicide rates, spotlighting the dire need for introspection and change within the system. While Will and Joe lean toward socialism as a potential route forward, the commonality is clear: an urgent need to address and redefine the massive military-industrial complex. Demonstrating the beauty of constructive dialogue, this episode underscores the importance of coming together, sharing perspectives, and coalescing around solutions, irrespective of differing ideologies. Monday is the first day of classes for the fall semester at UNC-Asheville. It also marks the beginning of Dr. Nancy Cable's tenure as the 8th chancellor at the school. She takes over for Dr. Mary Grant, who left the school at the end of 2017. Dr. Joe Urgo served as interim chancellor until Cable's arrival. Cable comes to Asheville from the world of philanthropy, having served as the president of the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations since 2012. Cable's first few days on the job were hectic - a complaint from the North Carolina Department of Insurance forced the university to close its five new residence halls to students last week after 59 of them had already moved in. Late Friday night, The Woods complex was re-opened, but the concerns of the DOI remain. Firefighters will live in the complex until the lingering issues regarding standpipes and sprinklers in the buildings are resolved. Commencement ceremonies take place this Saturday on the campus of UNC-Asheville. The school's interim chancellor Joe Urgo says this year's graduating class is the largest in recent memory, while the incoming class of freshman this fall is the largest in school history. Urgo sat down with BPR's Matt Bush to discuss news at the school, including the search for a full-time chancellor (expect something by the end of May). Urgo also discussed something he spoke about at a recent appearance in Western North Carolina by Margaret Spellings, the president of the University of North Carolina System - his desire to see higher education build the "thoughtforce" as much as it does the workforce. Urgo says there are a lot of intractable problems in the world right now - specifically noting climate change and racial inequity - and that the thinking that created those problems will not fix them. As the UNC-System's liberal arts university, Urgo believes UNC-Asheville is in a unique spot to do this. Urgo also discussed several initiatives and programs the university is undertaking to build a more diverse student body.

In this keynote fireside chat with Erik Voorhees at Denver Startup Week, we “get philosophical” and dive into the societal and political implications of blockchain. This interview was inspired by Ryan Shea’s interview of Naval Ravikant. It’s also the first in a series of philosophical podcast interviews with blockchain philosophers like Albert Wenger and Trent McConaghy (plus leaders in the effective altruist/rationalist community!). We're diving into our new mini-series "Leveraging the Crowd: How Blockchain Companies are Building Community". (Heavily influenced by the book Machine, Platform, Crowd.) We’ll look at how companies like Aragon, Status, ConsenSys, BoostVC, and others are building new kinds of blockchain communities. In this first episode of the series, I dive into this subject with Joe Urgo, the co-founder of district0x (a blockchain company that has built an incredible community). Our guest this episode is Joe Urgo, Co-Founder of district0x. district0x is an open source platform for the deployment of decentralized organizations, markets and limitless other means of organizational interactions, including the means to describe and execute governance models as agreed by the participants. This seems to be a great step forward in the evolution of decentralized organization. Listen in and you decide where it fits. #### Music Bumper music: *Rocket Power* by Kevin MacLeod. #### Links [district0x website](https://district0x.io) [district0x token offering](https://contribution.district0x.io/) [Aragon governance platform](https://aragon.one/) [Interplanetary File System - IPFS](https://ipfs.io/)
On this episode of BlockChannel, McKie and Petty sit down with Joe Urgo and Matus Lestan of the District0x team. What originally started as a few Ethereum-based token contracts for creating a service for freelancing, has now evolved into an upcoming system for creating and managing digital communities and decentralized markets called “Districts”. McKie and Petty dive in and ask questions about their vision, current partnerships for interoperable functionality (i.e. with Aragon), in order to gain more insight into all the exciting possibilities they store for the future. The team also shares with us tips for potential Ethereum developers and entrepreneurs in the space curious to get in on all the fun.
