POPULARITY
The United States has gone, in less than six months, from being seen by many as a defender of democracy and human rights, to being the latest – and most powerful - administration to embrace authoritarianism. Amid a head-spinning flood of presidential orders and harsh policies - towards women, immigrants, the poor, the disabled and the sick, it's hard to know where to focus. In this episode, veteran Turkish journalist and human rights activist Murat Celikkan tells host Akwe Amosu what he has been paying attention to, and reflects on how Turkey's human rights movement has been trying to strengthen its own work. And in the Coda, why a dose of Baroque music might ease your mind. EPISODE 78 - “FILM NOIR - Part 1 - WHAT IS NOIR?” - 3/10/2025 Have you ever wondered what exactly is film noir? TCM's EDDIE MULLER describes it this way: “Film Noir is all about treachery, deceit, and paranoia. You're never quite sure what is going on, who you can trust, or what dreadful pitfall waits around the corner.” This dark and twisted film genre popped up after WWII as a quiet cynicism began to creep into the national consciousness. In film noir, there is always an underbelly of darkness that comes out to play. And within the darkness, the shadows, and the neon lights, lie many stories of crime, dishonesty, adultery, murder, and mayhem. This week, we present the first in a special three-part series that delves into the darkest of genres where crooked cops, gangsters, torch singers, barflies, and other seedy character's live, love and kill. Join us as we discuss Film Noir! SHOW NOTES: Sources: Film Noir (2017), by Alian Silver & James Ursini; Into the Darkness: The Hidden World of Film Noir 1941-1959 (2016), by Mark A. "MARY BETH HUGHES - CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" - 3/03/2025 For those of you who don't know the charms of MARY BETH HUGHES, when she was under contract at MGM, she was dubbed "the poor man's LANA TURNER." It was a rather unfair assessment since MGM gave Lana all the plum roles, and Mary Beth got her hand-me-downs. But still, Mary Beth had great comic chops, and no one played bitchy, hard-boiled blondes as well as she. Despite her beauty and talent, she never managed to get out of B-pictures. She did have small parts in great films like The Women (1939) and The Ox-Bow Incident (1942). She played the good girl as often as she played the bad girl, but when she played bad....you were in for a treat. Her pouty lips, snappy dialogue, and petulant attitude lit up many a lackluster production. This week, we celebrate her as our Star of the Month. Jeannette is joined by the legend himself, Alan Curtis MBE, former Wales international football player, and current honorary club president of Swansea, to discuss insights into receiving an MBE, his early days in football, experiences at various clubs like Swansea, Leeds, Southampton, and Cardiff, and the changes in football over the years. Alan also reflects on the challenges and highlights of his career, including injuries, club transitions, and the psychological aspects of sports, as well as the life lessons he's taken from the beautiful game, and on into all corners of life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Alan had a stellar football career, playing for various clubs and experiencing the changes in the game over the years. The transition from playing for Leeds to Cardiff was challenging due to the intense rivalry between the two clubs, leading to a mixed reception from fans. The importance of mindset and mental health in sports was evident, with players facing self-doubts and pressure before games. The story of Alan's uncle, Roy Paul, winning the FA Cup with Manchester City in 1956 after losing in 1955, showcases the determination and prediction of a victory. The evolution of football tactics and the emphasis on possession in modern football contrast with the more straightforward and aggressive style of play in the past. BEST MOMENTS "I think the players certainly are much more tactically aware as well now... It's much more tactical. It's almost like a game of chess now." "I think everybody, every player goes through a doubt just before they go out... all the self-doubts that he had, and, oh, I've got a little bit of a niggle there now." "I think sometimes I always feel that somebody's looking down and looking after me in key moments... I think that probably would have all disappeared." "I remember the first time I played for Cardiff... I got booed by both sets of supporters. Wow. Talking about character building!" Reinhard Heydrich sucks. Like real bad. Like he's in blue ribbon contention at the Nazi 4H show. You know... where kids raise Nazis themselves and show them off at the Exhibition before sending them off to slaughter as a character-building exercise? We're getting off track here. Big picture: He sucked so bad that people killed him. He needed killin', sure, but it also cost the world the village of Lidice. Is this the ultimate portrayal of this man's fall? Or little more than a well-intentioned propaganda film? Jason and Brendan, as usual, are happy to tell you. Next week: Back to the list! Questions? Comments? Suggestions? EPISODE 23 - “I Coulda Been a Contender: Classic Casting That Almost Happened” - 02/19/2024 It is well documented that the film “Gone With The Wind” started filming before an actress was cast in the lead role of Scarlett O'Hara. Producer DAVID O. SELZNICK made a spectacle out of who would win the coveted role. It became a national obsession. He considered everyone from TALLULAH BANKHEAD to BETTE DAVIS to LUCILLE BALL. He eventually narrowed the field to three finalists: PAULETTE GODDARD, JOAN BENNETT, and JEAN ARTHUR. But in the eleventh hour, a new contender, an unknown Brit named VIVIEN LEIGH, swept in and won the role. Listen as we discuss, debate, and guffaw over other casting choices that almost happened in some of your favorite film classics. Il Giustino RV 717 is a 1724 opera by Vivaldi set to a libretto by Nicolò Beregan, also set by Albinoni and Handel. The opera was composed for the 1724 carnival season in Rome and premiered at the Teatro Capranica. The aria of Anastasio, Vedrò con mio diletto, has become a famous piece sung at concerts and on recordings by countertenors such as Philippe Jaroussky and Jakub Józef Orliński and by contraltos as Sonia Prina. Sinfonia of Act I, Scene V, is also used by Vivaldi as the main motif of the first movement of La Primavera ("Spring") from his concerti The Four Seasons. The opera was revived in modern times in 1985 in a production directed by Alan Curtis and performed at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, at the Opéra Royal of the Palace of Versailles, and at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. According to data reported by Le magazine de l'opéra baroque, a subsequent performance in concert form was held at the Mégaron Musikis in Athens in 2007, while a further revival on stage, for a total of twelve performances, took place, between 2008 and 2009, at the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater. In July 2018, a concert performance was given at the Festival International d'Opéra Baroque de Beaune — with the Accademia Bizantina conducted by Ottavio Dantone. In August 2018, a full costume version of Il Giustino, directed by Deda Cristina Colonna and conducted by Peter Spissky and the Camerata Øresund, figured as one of the central pieces in the Næstved Early Music Festival.

Then, Ella Raines, Alan Curtis, and Brian Aherne star in "Phantom Lady," a production from The Lux Radio Theatre (originally aired on CBS on March 27, 1944).

Radar is a number of things! Radar Relay - A decentralized exchange built on Ethereum and 0x Redshift - Bitcoin lightning network payments infrastructure ION - The Homepage to the Lightning Network Alan, the CEO of Radar, comes to POV to discuss the direction of Relay, the experience of building on both chains, and how the Radar suite bridges Bitcoin and Ethereum!
Radar Relay, the peer-to-peer trading platform built on the 0x protocol did a respectable $100M in volume in 2019. This however is down from the dizzying highs of 2018 where in certain months, Radar Relay facilitated up to $60M. In this interview, Radar CEO Alan Curtis speaks candidly about the current state of the DEX landscape that features lower volumes ($5-7M a day) and more competition. He draws attention to the current “space race” taking place between Kyber Network and 0x to aggregate liquidity, how he’s seeing an inbound of more automated and professional traders and how he expects to see more centralized exchanges experimenting with DEX models. He also opens up about the high cost of compliance and how Radar has managed to create a compliant DEX by US regulatory standards. More about Radar RADAR is best known for RADAR RELAY, but has recently been expanding its portfolio of products. It now has REDSHIFT, which bridges payments between the Bitcoin Lightning Network and other blockchains such as Ethereum. They've also built ION, which services to educate and onboard users to the Lightning Network. Their latest project, DEPLOY is a node operations platform that helps developer spin up and maintain blockchain infrastructure. You can find more information about the various product offerings on radar.tech, --- If you enjoyed this conversation, share it with your colleagues & friends, rate, review, and subscribe. This podcast is presented by BlockWorks Group. Alan joins us on Base Layer to give us a great in-depth overview of the happenings at Radar; going from Relay which the team believes is the most secure way to trade ERC20 tokens directly from your Ethereum wallet; to Ion and Redshift which allows users to trustlessly swap assets between chains to Deploy which the team says is the easiest way to spin up and maintain blockchain infrastructure so you can ship faster with less. This was a great chat about the entire ecosystem Radar and the team are working on and you'll learn a lot!

In July, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin, shared some choice words for centralized cryptocurrency exchanges, hoping they “burn in hell”. These exchanges are some of the most powerful players in the digital currency market, acting as the middleman between buyers and seller, however, according to JPMorgan, one-third of centralized crypto exchanges have been subject to hacks. Over the past year, decentralized exchanges that don’t hold custody of funds and allow buyers and sellers to directly exchange tokens have been growing in popularity, gaining attention across the industry segment. Now imagine a decentralized trading platform for ERC-20 compliant tokens the runs on the 0x protocol. Users are able to trade tokens wallet-to-wallet with other traders via the Ethereum blockchain without giving custody of the tokens to an exchange or smart contract. This improves both the speed, security, and safety of peer-to-peer trading compared to a centralized exchange. Once such startup doing exactly that. Changing the world, one user at a time in a decentralized manner. That company is called Radar Relay and I recently had the chance to interview the CEO Alan Curtis.
