One century ago on Memorial Day — Friday, May 30, 1924 — the campus community gathered to dedicate a permanent landmark honoring former Notre Dame students who had died in or as a result of the Great War. Today, the east entrance of the Basilica has the familiar phrase “God, Country, Notre Dame” engraved above the oaken double doors and is known affectionately as the World War I Memorial Door. Celebrate the spirit of this special anniversary as we honor and remember members of our Notre Dame family who gave their lives. We are mindful of the ways the simple phrase “God, Country, Notre Dame” has become a rallying cry, and how the World War I Memorial Door has become an iconic place of pilgrimage and a symbol of faith, patriotism, and loyalty to all who love Notre Dame. Our speaker lineup is a shining example of the “God, Country, Notre Dame” ethos – just like Fr. Ted.Presenter: John Hickey, '69,Notre Dame Alumni Association 2023 Volunteer of the YearJohn Hickey '69 pursued a diverse career path after graduating in 1969. He started as a 7th-grade teacher, married Kathleen Larkin (SMC '71), became a commercial underwriter, earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, and worked as a commercial real estate broker, investment services professional in Edmonton, and banking executive. His greatest joy has been watching his three children grow and nurturing his five grandchildren. His interests include visiting national parks, genealogy, and documenting his family's history at Notre Dame, which dates back to 1849. Choosing Notre Dame and marrying his wife are the best decisions of his life. Notably, his grandfather's construction company installed the “God, Country, Notre Dame” inscription on Sacred Heart's east door in 1924, a motto that has always been his touchstone. John is now retired and resides in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Thanks for listening! The ThinkND Podcast is brought to you by ThinkND, the University of Notre Dame's online learning community. He graduated from the University of Indiana and went on to earn his law degree from the University of Tulsa. In this episode, John talks about how Oklahoma's lenient cannabis regulations have led to a large number of dispensaries and an exploding population of growers. With so many new businesses being established, dispensaries need to account for the lower prices that come with increased supply. He believes that it will take time for the market to normalize and for long-term focused entrepreneurs to gain a solid foothold on the market. Finally, John offers his predictions on what the future holds for federal law with regards to the legalization of cannabis. The Syrian civil war is a humanitarian crisis that affects 13 million people. We’ve already supported this project for 4 years, and due to the ongoing severity of this crisis we are committing to another 3 years. With over 70% of Syrian refugees living below the poverty line, we are supporting the distribution of urgently needed items to 20,000 people that are a means for survival during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as resources to survive the harsh winter months. To address the root causes of extreme poverty we’re also supporting programs that will enable 3000 marginalised people to access public services, receive education & access to vocational training & support systems. And here is an insight into the bigger picture. Jodene got the chance to speak to Baptist World Aid representatives, Church Relationship Manager for NSW & ACT Marbuen Diaz and CEO John Hickey about GBC's ongoing support in Lebanon
