In this episode of Quakers Today, co-hosts Peterson Toscano (he/him) and Miche McCall (they/them) explore how queer Quakers respond to climate change with joy, creativity, and radical inclusion. The episode features Damon Motz-Storey and Lina Blount, who delve into the intersection of queerness, spirituality, and climate activism. Featured Segments: Queer Quaker Responses to Climate Change with Damon Motz-Storey and Lina Blount Damon Motz-Storey (they/them), a genderqueer Quaker, discusses the importance of radical joy, play, and community in climate work: “We're going to save the earth, and we're going to do it in six-inch heels and full makeup.” Damon Motz-Storey became the Chapter Director of the Oregon Chapter of the Sierra Club in 2023. They have a wealth of experience leading environmental and climate justice campaigns in the Pacific Northwest. Their achievements include blocking major new coal, oil, and gas expansions, pioneering the Portland Clean Energy Fund initiative, and contributing to Oregon's 2021 state legislation for low-income utility bill discounts, home energy retrofits, and a commitment to 100% clean electricity by 2040. She currently serves as the Director of Strategy and Partnerships with the Earth Quaker Action Team. And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, “This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.” And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”So he said, “Teacher, say it.” “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?” Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.” Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.” Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

Rebecca Grant shares how she built an incredibly successful and well-respected wedding planning business, in large part due to networking. Many of us rely on word of mouth to advertise our paper flower businesses. Clients are going to trust a friend's or event planner's advice over a random ad any day. But where do you start? How do you connect with people who can recommend your work? In our latest episode of Paper Talk, we talked with Rebecca Grant of New Creations Weddings. She is a very recognized and respected wedding planner in the Seattle area, but that wasn't always the case. Like all of us, Rebecca had to start her business from scratch. She shared fantastic advice for anyone building a creative business. Listen now to learn how to cultivate a positive reputation as you navigate difficult decisions, adverse situations, and that often feared yet crucial piece, networking. Here's what you'll learn when you listen to our conversation: ► Rebecca's journey to becoming a well-respected wedding planner.► How to evaluate if you should take that next big leap with your business.► What to think about when investing money in your business.► How to network successfully, even if you're an introvert!► Why and how Rebecca is partially pivoting to wedding venue ownership. If you can't listen right away, here is a peek at our conversation. Rebecca shared four specific reasons to evaluate when thinking about quitting your day job and jumping fully into your creative business. The last one was, as Rebecca said, “Network, network, network, network, network, network.” A great way to build up your paper flower business is to network with other people in the wedding industry. Here are three things you can do to better connect with other professionals at networking events: Network with Friends Start with who you know! On the podcast, Quynh recommended bringing a friend along to networking events. If you're new to these types of events, or you're on the introverted side, a friend can help you feel less awkward and alone. It's also much easier to gush about your friend's accomplishments, and vice versa. Chat to your friends in the industry to see who would be willing to go with you. Make sure that you know all about their work and they know about yours. “It's great to have friends that push you and are constantly driven themselves. It's just really fun to be a part of their energy and push you to the next level, too.” -Rebecca Grant Take Networking Notes As Rebecca shared on the episode, the wedding networking events that she attends frequently draw in well over fifty people. Even if you only meet half of them, that's still a lot of new faces and details to remember. The solution? Take notes! Add their contact info to your phone, and attach a photo of their business card and a quick note of who introduced you and what you talked about. Also include a photo of them so you don't forget what they look like. You can look for a headshot on their social media or website, or you can ask to take a selfie—and don't feel bad about that request! Rebecca told us that she loves promoting these networking events on social media, because it encourages other people to join in later. She would gladly take a photo with a small group and that gets tagged at the event on Instagram. When individual businesses are built up, the entire industry benefits. Those with more experience in the wedding industry or other creative fields know this, and they will more than likely be very happy to chat and take a photo with you. Follow Up If you meet somebody and they make an impression on you, message them. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. You want to strengthen the connection you made so that later on you can reconnect more easily. Your message can be as simple as this: “Hello! It was great meeting you at [the event]. Long-term drought, extreme heat, intense fires and unpredictable weather -- obviously, Arizona is feeling the effects of climate change now. Governor Doug Ducey and Republican Legislators continue to pursue the capitalist path of unbridled and unchecked growth as the road to prosperity, with no concern regarding the environmental impact or the long-term sustainability of their ideas.  In her speech to the  UN climate conference in 2019, teen climate activist Greta Thunberg called the corporate push for more consumerism ... more growth ... more building  "fairytale" and warned world leaders that the youth of planet Earth expect action. It's hard being the new kid on the block. It's extra hard when your family is uprooted from a place you call home and tossed to the opposite coast to try and make a strange place home again. Not just within your new four walls either, you have to find a new job, make new friends, find new doctors and *GASP* find new emergency contacts for your kids school forms! Have you ever heard of Blue Star Families? We hadn't either! So today we have Wendy Layton, Chapter Director for Blue Star Families in Jacksonville, on the show. "The families of our all-volunteer military make unprecedented sacrifices these days to serve our country. Blue Star Families was founded by military spouses in 2009 to empower these families to thrive as they serve. We're committed to strengthening military families by connecting them with their neighbors – individuals and organizations – to create vibrant communities of mutual support. We believe we're all stronger when we take care of one another." If you're serving for a little while longer, or you're ready to volunteer some of your time and advice as a seasoned spouse, you won't want to miss this episode. www.bluestarfam.org

LinkedUp: Breaking Boundaries in Education

Liz Hamor (she/her) will say that her work isn't just her passion, it's her calling. After earning a Masters degree in ESOL and Bilingual education from Kansas State University, she taught in low-income schools in Emporia, KS, and San Antonio, TX. She continually advocated for her students and their families who faced barriers with education, language and income, before starting her family with her husband and moving to Las Vegas. After a brief two-year stint in Las Vegas where she loved the weather and outdoor adventures but missed friendlier people, her small family jumped at an opportunity to move back to Kansas in 2008. Once back in Wichita, Liz became an “accidental” ministry leader, co-founding a moms' group at her church that grew into a ministry, prepping her for the next path on her calling journey. In 2013 Liz co-founded GLSEN Greater Wichita (now GLSEN Kansas), a local chapter of a national organization that works to ensure all students feel safe, valued, and respected in K-12 schools regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression. After seven years of working diligently to ensure that Kansas schools are safer and more inclusive for ALL students (and taking years of Kansas Leadership Center courses) she decided to take a leap of faith and expand on the leadership coaching business she started in 2019. This Spring she is transitioning out of her Chapter Director role within GLSEN Kansas to focus on her leadership consulting business, Center of Daring. She's excited about continuing her work with individuals and people from all sectors to empower and support folks ready to be courageous catalysts in their communities. She currently lives in a Wichita suburb with her spouse, two kids, and doggo, and volunteers on various site councils, committees, and coalitions. "

At the beginning of a new school year most students are worrying about settling into their dorm room with a new roommate, finding their classrooms, or how they’re going to pay for textbooks. Their parents may be worrying about how well their child will do academically and hoping they stay out of trouble. But if you are a Christian student or parent you may be worrying about how you, or your child, will survive college or high school with a faith that is intact. According to recent studies about 25% of college professors are professing atheists or agnostics whereas only about 7% of the general public are atheists or agnostics. Only 6% of professors believe the bible is the actual word of God and 51% say it’s an ancient book with good moral precepts. 75% of teachers and professors say that religion has no place in public schools. With statistics like these, a Christian parent or student has a reason to be worried. In fact, 8 out of 10 young people will leave the faith due to questions they encounter in public school. But today on Education For Life, Kevin is joined by three guests who are actively working to turn the tide with the Ratio Christi organization. Ratio Christi means “The Reason of Christ”. Kevin will speak with Michael Bossman, Vice President of Ratio Christi, Conor Anderson, Chapter Director and Evan Young, a student who has been mentored by Ratio Christi members. Their mission is to equip university students and faculty to give historical, philosophical, and scientific reasons for following Jesus Christ. They aim to show young adults how reasonable a belief in Christ really is. Tune in to hear the amazing testimony of these three men and learn about the purpose of Ratio Christi. The learn more about Ratio Christi and their program you can visit ratiochristi.org.
