On the morning of April 10, 1936, Nancy Evans Titterton, novelist and wife of NBC Radio executive Lewis Titterton, was found sexually assaulted and strangled to death in the bathtub of her apartment in Beekman Place, a prominent New York City apartment building. Upon first inspection, the crime scene yielded few clues—a fingerprint in the bathroom, a length of rope used to bind her hands, and little else. Within a week, detectives were no closer to solving the case than they were on day one, until a break finally came when the rope and a single horsehair was traced to a local upholstery shop, and ultimately to an apprentice upholsterer named John Fiorenza, who, along with his boss, Theodore Kruger, discovered Nancy's body while delivering a piece of furniture. Eventually, Fiorenza confessed to assaulting and murdering Nancy Titterton, but claimed temporary insanity. At the trial, the jury rejected Fiorenza's defense and he was found guilty and he was executed in January 1938. Although the case of Nancy Evans Titterton may seem rather straightforward, it stands as an early example of science and law enforcement coming together to solve a case that had previously seemed destined to remain unsolved. In this conversation, Matthew (Matty) Fiorenza discusses his journey of recovery after the release of the PTSD911 documentary, his daily practices that support his mental health, and the launch of his nonprofit foundation aimed at helping first responders. He reflects on the importance of spiritual connection in his recovery and shares insights on the incremental changes that have led to his current state of well-being. The conversation highlights the significance of community support and the need for dedicated resources for first responders and their families. ABOUT MATTHEW Matthew “Matty” Fiorenza is a retired Anaheim Firefighter Paramedic. After 22 years of service Matty had to make a very tough decision. The decision to leave the career early on a medical retirement. Matty's struggles with PTSD, depression, anxiety, alcoholism and other physical injuries lead him on the fight for his life. After a suicide attempt, Matty attended a trauma retreat that opened his heart and mind, and gave him a road map to recovery. Shortly after that retreat, Matty began his sobriety journey, and went back to that retreat to volunteer for the next 3 1/3 years. Being in that space with some incredible mentors, Matty began to carry a message born in the Veteran Community to his brothers and sisters in the First Responder Community. Meditation, Equine therapy, 12-step programs, Stella Ganglion Block, EMDR therapy, Nerofeedback, TMS, Spec Scans from the Amen Clinic, and First Responder Support groups were all vital to Mattys recovery. He understood the value and saw the positive results of all these different modalities of treatment and wanted to share with is community. He was taught that you have to give it away to keep it and he didn't want any other First Responder to suffer as he did.  A portion of Matty's story is featured in the award-winning documentary film, PTSD911 available for individual/personal use on Amazon Prime Video. Libro Rosa (2023). Justin's work poses a model where belonging is created at the intersection of authenticity and acceptance. I really wanted to explore with him strategies to help us navigate toxic work environments. The unpacking we did together was brilliant: from setting intentions, values mining, implementing behaviours that match our intentions. Gold nuggets have been dropped, people! Justin also provides poignant examples of how we could expand our world views and perspectives through life.
