Fritz Haarmann, the infamous "Butcher of Hanover," was one of Germany's most prolific serial killers, luring young men and boys to their deaths between 1918 and 1924. His gruesome method of murder—biting through his victims' throats—earned him the nickname "The Vampire of Hanover," while rumors swirled that he sold human meat on the black market. Protected for years by his status as a police informant, Haarmann was finally exposed after human bones flooded the Leine River, leading to his arrest, trial, and execution, but his crimes left a lasting stain on German history, particularly for the gay community, which faced intensified persecution in the years that followed. Was unterscheidet den einfachen Mörder vom Serientäter? Over 100 years ago, two serial killers roamed in Germany, leaving behind several murdered children in their wake. Peter Kürten would go on to murder several young girls and one man. Fritz Haarmann would murder several boys. Both came from Germany, dubbed Vampire serial killers (of Dusseldorf and Hanover) and both would be executed via the guillotine.

This is part 2 of our coverage of one of Europe's most infamous serial killers. This week we go through the timeline of Fritz Haarmann's reign of terror as he begins to stalk and prey on the young boys of Hanover, leaving at least 27 bodies in his wake. This week, we travel back through time to talk about one of the worst serial killers in European History. Following World War I, the entire country of Germany was thrown into disarray as people scrambled to pick up the pieces. But for one man, he used the chaos of the war in order to become a sadistic serial killer and remain undetected for almost five years.

Witnesses say it's armed with spikes, it spits venom, and if you get too close it can even take you down with an electric shock. It's known as the Mongolian Death Worm. If you've not heard of it, it's because no one to date has yet been able to photograph it. So does that mean it doesn't exist? Or is it just too fast to capture on film? (The Mongolian Death Worm) *** Mount Pentelicus near Athens, Greece, is where the marble was cut to build the Parthenon. But more recently it has a more sinister reputation – for being haunted. Particularly around a certain cave known as “Davelis Cave.” (The Penteli Cave Enigma) *** Do you have people in your lives that you can't stand? A co-worker perhaps, or a family member, or a grumpy neighbor. You may call them “toxic”, but there was a lady who was so noxious that people couldn't literally stand her. Her name was Gloria Ramirez. (The Toxic Woman) *** For six years, Fritz Haarmann used his position as a police informant to hide in plain sight while he carried out at least 24 grisly murders as the "Vampire of Hanover." He was also called by some “The Butcher of Hanover”. But neither nickname given to him by the public comes remotely close to describing how evil the man truly was, or how gruesome his crimes actually were. Following the first world war, Germany, having never found its feet economically throughout the conflict, now found itself crumbling under the further weight of heavy reparations. Many of those that had survived the fighting found themselves in a desperate state, carrying out all sorts of underground, legally dubious, or just straight up illegal activities, in order to get by. There were some that thrived in the lawless environment, profiteering from others misfortune, and then there were others, a very select few, who not only thrived, but positively excelled at breaking the law, and amongst those, there were one or two who did so in some very dark ways. Friedrich Haarmann was one such individual. Trading used clothing by day, he carried out a series of brutal murders that would earn him the monikers of “The Butcher of Hanover,” “The Wolf Man,” and “The Vampire of Hanover.” Perhaps even more frightening than his nicknames, was the attitude of the man himself, who once told a shocked audience, “Oh believe me, I'm not ill, it's only that I occasionally have funny turns.” SOURCES Theodor, Lessing (1925) Monsters of Weimar.

https://linktr.ee/Lovelyfreaks Today on our serial killer month we are going to Germany all the way back to the early 1900's. Frtiz Haarmann had many names givin to him after the police found out he was the person responsible for so many young men going missing during this time.
Today's Oddcast - The Vampire of Hanover (Airdate 9/30/2022) Reality is scarier than any movie and the true story of Fritz Haarmann proves it. The townspeople loved him for his tasty and affordable black market meat. The police valued him as an informant. But all around him, young men went missing…why did it take so long to capture the monstrous Vampire of Hanover? How does the son of a cigar factory owner become one of history's most prolific and shocking serial killers? And why did it take till 2015 to finally lay it all to rest? This episode is not for the squeamish or faint of heart. And we definitely recommend that you don't listen while you're eating….Welcome to Spooky Season! When local children stumbled across a skull on the shore of a river, police weren't too worried. When a second skull showed up soon after, they decided to do a more thorough search just to be safe. Their search went on to reveal over 500 pieces of human bone—and a twisted killer who they knew all too well. ***A Note***I didn't cover this in the episode, but here is some additional reading on the media coverage and art that surrounded this crime and time period—and the potential implications of it. Interesting stuff! https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/shadow-boxing/201402/eroti-kill

Perhaps the most ANIMALISTIC of all SERIAL KILLERS; We take a deep dive into the disturbing, troubling and sadistic life of the VAMPIRE of HANOVER, FRITZ HAARMANN. The brutality of this man's crimes is beyond comprehension. TRUE CRIME, indeed.

Join us this week as “wir fahren nach Deutschland”. This is the precursor for the Vampire of Dusseldorf. Hannah shares with us 5 stories of murderers/meat vendors. Yes, you read that right. We get a little history lesson, before we hear about Johann Mayer, Friedrich Schumann, Carl Großmann, Fritz Haarmann, and Karl Denke. We will also talk about Hannah's love of hotdogs! As for astrology, well this week it is a turd. To start Mercury in Gemini goes into the dreaded retrograde and after that, the week just kind of blows. Chin up though, we will all make it through! He didn't just love to kill his victims; Fritz Haarmann liked to bite into their Adam's apples and tear out their throats. His "love bites" earned him the nickname The Werewolf or The Vampire of Hanover, Germany. Yes, he's as bad as it sounds. From 1918-1924, Fritz murdered as many as 50 children before police finally realized that the Werewolf/Vampire was one of their own. For six years, Fritz Haarmann used his position as a police informant to hide in plain sight while he carried out at least 24 grisly murders as the "Vampire of Hanover."SOURCES: https://pantheon.world/profile/person/Fritz_Haarmann/ https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fritz_Haarmann https://criminalminds.fandom.com/wiki/Fritz_Haarmann https://www.ndr.de/geschichte/chronologie/Fritz-Haarmann-Massenmoerder-versetzt-Hannover-in-Aufruhr,haarmann100.htmlSupport the show
