Abstract: James Lucas had the opportunity to respond to the review of the book that he and Jonathan Neville wrote, By Means of the Urim & Thummim. Here is one from the archives. We released this episode with Jonathan Neville back on April 8, 2022. Jonathan Neville is a big-tent proponent when it comes to Book of Mormon beliefs. Part of that likely stems from Heartland being shut out of groups like Book of Mormon Central. But Jonathan is also wants to keep the tent open for people who believe in a non-historical Book of Mormon. https://youtu.be/yfbOflp3OD4 Non-Historical Book of Mormon? Jonathan: But it all comes back to this Mesoamerican thing, because I think once the scholars convince people that Oliver Cowdery and Joseph Smith were wrong about the Hill Cumorah, that was like a chink in the armor. They could be wrong about anything else. They said, "If they were wrong about something they said was a fact, then they could be wrong about anything else." So, they can be wrong about the translation. I don't know if you know, Skousen recently published a thing in The Interpreter about how now he's saying that Oliver Cowdery deliberately misled everybody about the translation. GT 2:56:48 Royal Skousen. Jonathan 2:56:48 Royal Skousen. And I couldn't disagree more, but I understand why he says that because the Mesoamerican thing opened the door to questioning everything Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery taught, and you end up with, what's left? Everybody just kind of says, "Well, as long as you believe in Christ, that's all the matters." But, come on. I mean, when it gets down to it, the only evidence that we have of the restoration of the priesthood is from Oliver Cowdery. Joseph Smith talked about it, but he didn't talk about the event. Yet, they're saying Oliver Cowdery was wrong about the Hill Cumorah? So, what I advocate is not anybody agree with anything that I say. I advocate, let's get all the facts out, and then let's look at the different interpretations of the facts. You go all the way from Dan Vogel and Tom Murphy, through Jack Welch, John Sorenson and Dan Peterson. Then, over here we have Rod Meldrum, and Wayne May on the geography issue, or me on the translation or whatever. Let's just put all of them out and let's get rid of this citation cartel that censors things they don't like. The Interpreter, to me, is an appalling journal. It shouldn't even be considered an academic journal. GT 2:57:20 Yet, you read it. Jonathan 2:58:06 Well, I have a blog called The Interpreter Peer Reviewed, where once in a while someone will send me an article, "You've got to deal with this." I read it, okay. Then, what I would do is a peer review. I understand it's more of a peer approval process that it goes through with those guys, because everybody on their peer review process already drinks the Kool Aid. I mean, they don't consider an outside perspective, and I know, because I've talked with them. I know how they are, and you can read it in their journals. They get upset that I even talk about it. Dan Peterson freaks out. In Dan Peterson's own blog that he does on his Patheos, whatever, he's referred to me several times and wants everybody read this critical web page. There's a page that's critical of me all the time. At first, I thought, "Well, I should respond to that." But then I read it. It's so ludicrous. I feel like if people can't discern fact from sophistry, then that's on them. I'm not going to spend all my time tamping down all the sophistry going around. Jonathan 2:59:12 I just feel like people need to present the facts. If The Interpreter--the name Interpreter kind of tells it all, because they feel like they are the credentialed class. They are the ones that have been hired by the prophets to guide the rest of us, that kind of stuff which they've said. And the name Interpreter, alone, is a non-starter, because they're trying to interpret the scriptures for us. I think the scriptures are given to ordinary people that we can understand and interpret for ourselves. We don't need some scholars interpreting it for us.

Does Book of Mormon translation method matter? Many people don't care whether Joseph used a seer stone or a Urim & Thummim to translate the Book of Mormon. Oliver Cowdery is famous for trying to translate the Book of Mormon in D&C 8 and 9. Did he try to use a dowsing rod to do so, or is there another explanation? Jonathan Neville & Jim Lucas are co-authors of "By Means of the Urim & Thummim" and say Oliver is the best witness for translation without a seer stone. Emma Smith served as Joseph Smith's scribe for most of the Lost 116 pages and likely knew how Joseph translated better than almost anyone. Have you ever tried picturing translation of the Book of Mormon? Did Joseph Smith read the words off the stone or Urim & Thummim directly (tight translation), or was he shown scenes in the Book of Mormon and used his own words to describe the scene (loose translation)? Mormon scholars are split on this topic, but Jim Lucas and Jonathan Neville will do their best to explain how Joseph used a Urim & Thummim to translate the Book of Mormon. David Whitmer says Joseph used a seer stone to translate the Book of Mormon. LDS Historians believe Joseph Smith used a seer stone to translate the Book of Mormon, but authors Jim Lucas and Jonathan Neville are pushing back against that theory. The two lawyers argue that the traditional story that Joseph used the Urim & Thummim to translate is more accurate, and they have written a new book, "By Means of the Urim & Thummim" to lay out their arguments. Because David Whitmer left the Church, they argue David Whitmer is hostile witness and can't be trusted. This is Part 1 of 2 episodes with Brant Gardner. The second episode focuses on the translation of the Book of Mormon. Brant Gardner, a Book of Mormon Scholar, gives a response to our interview with "Heartland" model scholar, Jonathan Neville on Book of Mormon Geography. Gardner supports the "academic" Mesoamerican model for the events that took place in the Book of Mormon. He cites North, East, South, and West directions in the text, population, agriculture, and other points he believes support the Mesoamerican model. We also cover the crucial point of "Where is the Hill Cumorah?" Everything may ride on how you interpret this location and the history of referring to the hill in New York as Cumorah. Website - www.cwicmedia.com
How many sets of plates were there? Was the large repository of records at Cumorah in New York? What does "Translate" mean? Did the Book of Moses come from Nephite records in the repository? What is the "Demonstration Hypothesis? Website - www.cwicmedia.com
I have no horse in this race. But many do. Where did the Book of Mormon take place? The academic model is the Meso-American model. But there is a growing belief in what has become known as the Heartland model which states that the Book of Mormon took place in the Eastern United States. According to scholar Jonathan Neville, one of the thought leaders of the Heartland Model, if we simply listen to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, we would have to take a closer look at this model. Is there "gatekeeping" going on at Book of Mormon Central (Scripture Central)? Key to the Heartland Model is the location of Cumorah. The Meso-American Model has the Hill Cumorah in Meso-America. The Heartland Model in New York. Obviously, the plates were found in New York, but the meta-narrative is that this hill was mistakenly called Cumorah or "traditionally" called Cumorah. Listen to this conversation and make your own judgment. Website - www.cwicmedia.com
In this interview, I asked Jonathan to respond to some of his critics, particularly his LDS critics who published articles in the Interpreter earlier this year. Jonathan welcomes criticism because he advocates consideration of "multiple working hypotheses" based on established facts. But he objects to "gatekeeping" intellectuals that ban or censor interpretations they don't agree with--especially when they ban alternative faithful interpretations. He hopes the exchange in the Interpreter will lead to a more inclusive approach on the part of the Interpreter editors, as well as the gatekeepers at FAIRLDS and Book of Mormon Central. During the interview, Jonathan explains that his LDS critics don't seem to realize he is not writing only for LDS audiences so he uses citations to a variety of sources, so long as they are factual. And he looks forward to ongoing conversations with Mormon Book Reviews, the "Switzerland" of the Restoration.
The question of just how church founder Joseph Smith produced the faith's signature scripture, the Book of Mormon, continues to be debated. Did Smith “translate” the Reformed Egyptian writing from gold plates or did he invent the story of a Hebrew civilization living in the ancient Americas who welcomed Jesus Christ after his crucifixion in Jerusalem? In recent years, the scholarly consensus in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints seems to be that Smith produced most of the text using a “seer stone” in a hat, where words somehow appeared on the revelatory rock, without really referring to the plates. In a forthcoming book, titled “By Means of the Urim and Thummim: Restoring Translation to the Restoration,” authors James Lucas and Jonathan Neville argue that the evidence for the seer stone is “inconsistent and unreliable.” Instead, they believe the traditional theory that Smith used “interpreters” called the urim and thummim, which the first Latter-day Saint prophet described as “two transparent stones set in the rim of a bow fastened to a breastplate.” On this week's show, Lucas discusses why he and his co-writer believe their theory is correct.
Jonathan Neville returns to Mormon Book Reviews to give his perspective of the two news stories about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints finances that recently aired. The Fifth Estate in Canada and 60 Minutes Australia released investigative reports about the way tithing funds are handled in those countries. Jonathan also responds to my interview with Nigel Kennett whose contact with the Fifth Estate helped trigger these investigations. Jonathan gives a faithful perspective and he discusses his experience in the financial world to offer some clarification on some of these issues. We also preview a future conversation where he will respond to some of his critics. #lds #mormonism #60minutesaustralia #cbc
Jonathan Neville returns to Mormon Book Reviews to preview a response he is going to give to some critics of his work. He then debuts a new painting (a rough sketch as he calls it) he did of the Stone In the Hat Demonstration that he believes will be a helpful visual aid to support his hypothosis of Joseph Smith being a conventional translator. Jonathan also discusses a very rare John Sorenson manuscript he has in his possession . We then talk about the great Book of Mormon online resources the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provides and KC Kern's revolutionary online BOM study guide. Speaking of KC, I want to thank him for helping salvage this interview with the added b-roll. I had major issues with zoom and it all ended working out in the end! #lds #bookofmormon #JosephSmithPainting

Fresh from presenting at the Mormon History Association, Jonathan Neville returns to give us a report on how his paper was received. On this special episode of Mormon Book Reviews, the process of translating the Book of Mormon is also discussed. Was the Seer Stone merely a diversion for the plates and the spectacles (aka the Urim & Thummin)? Jonathan makes a very bold proposal that the spectacles were the main vehicle used to translate the BOM! He also previews a project he is starting to work on called "The Myth of the Mound Builder Myth". It is a response to Thomas Murphy's Mound Builder hypothosis, first discussed on this channel. Whether you are a skeptic or a believer, I think you'll find this discussion fascinating. #jonathanneville #thomasmurphy #moundbuildermyth #lds #mormon
Jonathan Neville believes Joseph Smith often used words and ideas from 18th century theologian Jonathan Edwards. Who is Jonathan Edwards? Neville claims Edwards was sort of a Billy Graham figure of his day. Neville believes that Smith used phrases like “natural man is an enemy to God” and other Edwards ideas in the Book of Mormon. Are you convinced? We'll also talk about why Neville thinks Joseph didn't use a seer stone, but the Urim & Thummim to translate the Book of Mormon, and that the translation is a loose, rather than tight translation. Latter Day Radio, now podcasting from The Intersection of Faith & Freedom.
In this Latter Day Radio podcast, first broadcast on KLO Radio in Salt Lake City, attorney, author and researcher Jonathan Neville makes the case that the events described in the Book of Mormon took place in North America, primarily the northeastern U.S. states of Ohio, New York and Michigan and the surrounding areas. Neville bases his theory on Oliver Cowdery's "Letter 7" that was published in 1842 to counter claims from enemies of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that Joseph Smith "borrowed" content from other sources, such as Solomon Spaulding. His studies led him to conclude that Benjamin Winchester under the direction of William Smith, the youngest brother of Joseph Smith, wrote accounts in the early LDS publication, "The Times and the Seasons," that led many researchers to "go on a snipe hunt" in Central America for clues and evidence to confirm the claims in the Book of Mormon. In Neville's view, statements made by Joseph Smith, Oliver Cowdery and other early Church leaders that the final battle between Nephites and Lamanites did indeed take place in the area of the Great Lakes and not in Guatemala nor Mexico. He asserts that his research of both documents and of archaeological sites in and around Ohio confirms his theory. Neville has written several books on the subject that are described on his website, MoronisAmerica.com. GM Jarrard is the host for this podcast that was first heard on KLO in 2018.

On the latest episode of Mormon Book Reviews, Jonathan Neville returns to talk about a very important volume of books that contain the writings and sermons of Jonathan Edwards that young Joseph Smith may of had access to. Jonathan found information in these volumes that was not available to the public online. We also discuss the important role that the writings of Jonathan Edwards played in the translation process of the Book of Mormon and how that can serve as a bridge between Evanglicals and the Restoration. Jonathan believes that Edwards was a forerunner who helped pave the way for the coming forth of the Restoration and the Book of Mormon. The Joseph Smith Papers Project recognized the important role Edwards played and has been working with the Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale University for over a decade.PayPalPatreonLink to Purchase Infinite GoodnessLink to the Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale UniversityLink to You Daily Jonathan Edwards Blog

Model that Neville uses to engage ideas. It was a fun and informative conversation that I had with Jonathan. I know you all will enjoy it!Here is a link to purchase his latest book
Evangelical Steven Pynakker has a very important conversation with Hanna Seariac regarding the rise of White Nationalism within some parts of the Heartlander Movement and Calvinism. In this episode Hanna discusses her conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, encountering the Heartland Model for BOM geography, finding some nationalistic tendencies in that group, deciding to write an article about it, and becoming more progressive in her faith and politics. We also discuss Christian apologist Aaron Shafovaloff , Calvinistic Nationalism, the toxic "Bro-Culture" of Apologia Church/Studio, and Jaxon Washburn being banned from their church campus. In the video Hanna stated she was "agnostic" regarding BOM geography, she wanted me to clarify that she believes that it does have some connection to the ancient world. I want to thank Hanna for coming on and I hope that this will begin a constructive dialogue that can lead to bridge building and the healing of rifts.Link to Hannah's Religion Dispatches ArticleLink to Jonathan Neville's Response
Anthropologist Thomas Murphy returns to Mormon Book Reviews to respond to Rod Meldrum's recent appearance on my program. In a balanced attempt to seriously look at the Heartland Model, Murphy begins by giving a positive analysis of the the Firm Foundation's approach and model. He discusses Jonathan Neville's contribution of using "Multiple Working Hypotheses" to approach the various geography models. The role Faith and Science is discussed. Thomas then gives a very thorough analysis and critique of Rod's Model including DNA and it's role in determining Native American ancestry, Race being a social construct, a proper understanding of human evolution and origins, Mound Builder myths, FIRM Foundation misrepresents itself as doing proper indigenous peoples research, and much more. Thomas finishes by proposing a Book of Mormon Alternative Origin Model. This was a great interview and I hope will lead to more dialog and discussion. Maybe it will lead to Thomas and Rod having lunch one day!Links to Thomas' books on MBR YouTube
Evangelical Steven Pynakker interviews Jonathan Edward Neville author of "Infinite Goodness: Joseph Smith, Jonathan Edwards and the Book of Mormon". There is much more to the man who gave us America's most famous sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God". In this groundbreaking work Jonathan reveals that what many in the LDS Church think about Edwards is inaccurate. In the interview we discuss how Joseph may have started reading Edwards work when he was around the age of six. Neville demonstrates that the Book of Mormon is heavily reliant on Edwards. As a translator Joseph would have been influenced by the environment he was in. This study shows that many of the non-Biblical phrases in the BOM can be directly connected to the writings and sermons of Jonathan Edwards. The author also reveals that Edwards may have played a pivotal role in preparing America and the world for Restoration.Link to purchase

Evangelical Steven Pynakker reviews "Moroni's America" by Jonathan Neville. While many believers scoff at the Heartland Model setting for the Book of Mormon, this book should give them pause to reconsider. The author puts together a case for it using his extensive law background. If one needs a good resource to investigate this hypothesis, Moroni's America would be a good place to start.Link to the book: https://www.amazon.com/Moronis-Americ...Link to Moroni's America Blog: https://www.amazon.com/Kingdom-Matthias-Salvation-19th-Century-America/dp/0199892490
Watch Evangelical Steven Pynakker interview Jonathan Neville. In this episode we discuss the "Heartland Model" of Book of Mormon events. Over the last century the Meso-American model has been the dominate narrative regarding where events of the Book of Mormon took place. Now a new movement is gaining momentum that advocates for what many of the early Saints and church leaders thought about where these events occurred. This, is what I hope, will become an on going conversation amongst all the different viewpoints of this issue. I welcome advocates of other models to approach me and make a proposal to come on and be interviewed as well. In our second installment we discuss Jonathan's forthcoming book Infinite Goodness: Joseph Smith, Jonathan Edwards, and the Book of Mormon. This book has not been released yet, but the contents of this interview show that this is going to be a groundbreaking book. Book of Mormon studies may never be the same once it comes out! As soon as a review copy is produced it will be sent to me by his publisher. Stay tuned to witness one of the first reviews of this book! As soon as the book is released I will provide a link here to purchase it.Link for A Man that Can Translate: https://www.amazon.com/Man-that-Can-Translate-Interpreters/dp/1944200797/

Jonathan Neville Author, JD, Lawyer, Educator lettervii.com – moronisamerica.com – bookofmormonwars.comPresentations:Church history to build, not destroy, faith.Current trends in the International Church.Purchase Jonathan’s newest book called, “A Man that Can Translate: Joseph Smith and the Nephite Interpreters”. “Joseph Smith, Jr., and his principle scribe, Oliver Cowdery, claimed that Joseph translated the golden plates with an instrument the Nephites called “interpreters.” Joseph and Oliver called them Urim and Thummim. Some of their contemporaries claimed instead that Joseph merely dictated words that appeared on a seer stone he placed in a hat. The dual narratives were well known in 1834. In response, Joseph and Oliver formally reaffirmed that Joseph used the Urim and Thummim. They reiterated that position for the rest of their lives. In recent years, historians have revived the seer stone narrative. Which version is correct? Urim and Thummim or seer stone? Can they both be correct, or is it an either/or situation? Some historians have reconciled the discrepancies by simply redefining the term “Urim and Thummim” to mean both the Nephite interpreters and the seer stones, but that revisionist approach contradicts the plain historical usage. This book explores the historical evidence and proposes a solution that vindicates the testimonies of Joseph and Oliver while also accepting the statements of the observers as to what they saw. Except what they actually saw was not what they thought they saw.”Jonathan Neville is a lawyer, businessman, educator and author who has written over forty books, including both nonfiction and fiction. He has studied Church history and the Book of Mormon for decades, but didn’t begin publishing in the field until 2015. As of July 2017, he has published ten books on these topics. He also writes for several blogs, including lettervii.com, and moronisamerica.com.Brother Neville approaches these issues like the criminal prosecutor he once was. He pursues the evidence wherever it leads and doesn’t simply “assume” anything or take anyone’s word at face value. When it comes to Church history, he follows the adage: “trust, but verify.” That process of verifying has led to some important new discoveries that he finds to be faith-affirming and corroborate what Joseph Smith said and what the Book of Mormon teaches. For the last twenty-five years, Jonathan has lived in Utah, but he has lived in Europe for 8 years, in the Philippines, in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Washington, Tennessee, and Illinois. He has visited over 60 countries on every continent—including a Chilean base in Antarctica. He travels frequently with his wife Beverly, a PhD and Division Director for the Salt Lake County Health Department who is also a college professor and author, a popular speaker at BYU Education Week, and the author of an article in the Ensign in 2015. They have eight children, seven grandchildren, and no pets.Tim Ballard, author of the Lincoln Hypothesis among other books, says Brother Neville’s book titled Moroni’s America is “a definite game changer… finally a complete, honest, and faithful look at Book of Mormon geography that deals with all the tough questions.”Brother Neville’s book, Whatever Happened to the Golden Plates?, explains how Joseph Smith actually translated two separate sets of plates—only one of which came from Moroni’s box in the Hill Cumorah.
