The Salt Lake Tribune's Mormon Land
Did Joseph use a ‘seer stone' or other ‘interpreters' to translate the Book of Mormon? | Episode 270

The Salt Lake Tribune's Mormon Land

The question of just how church founder Joseph Smith produced the faith's signature scripture, the Book of Mormon, continues to be debated. Did Smith “translate” the Reformed Egyptian writing from gold plates or did he invent the story of a Hebrew civilization living in the ancient Americas who welcomed Jesus Christ after his crucifixion in Jerusalem? In recent years, the scholarly consensus in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints seems to be that Smith produced most of the text using a “seer stone” in a hat, where words somehow appeared on the revelatory rock, without really referring to the plates. In a forthcoming book, titled “By Means of the Urim and Thummim: Restoring Translation to the Restoration,” authors James Lucas and Jonathan Neville argue that the evidence for the seer stone is “inconsistent and unreliable.” Instead, they believe the traditional theory that Smith used “interpreters” called the urim and thummim, which the first Latter-day Saint prophet described as “two transparent stones set in the rim of a bow fastened to a breastplate.” On this week's show, Lucas discusses why he and his co-writer believe their theory is correct.

His name is James Lucas, and he and I are actually roommates. When I first met James, he had been sharing with me and a few mutual friends different stories of his life and some of the struggles that he had been experiencing. I couldn't help but more personally introduce myself to him, as we seemed to have a lot in common. I can remember just being there to let him know that if he wanted some support, it was here for him. That was the start of a beautiful friendship. I have wanted James to share his story on the show for a few years now; however, the timing for him just hadn't been right. And now, finally, my friend is opening up with you all his incredible story. James tells us what it was like growing up gay on a British island, what it felt like when his father passed away when James was in his early 20's, and how hiding from the world in the safety of his childish home negatively impacted his ability to open up intimately, later in life. Well - until now, that is. Today you'll see how put-together James has become and how he is thriving - allowing himself to try new things and address the reasons why he lived in so much isolation growing up. James is someone that I know loves being of service to others in need and sees the value of a Friday evening at home watching Netflix with his beautiful dog. If you ask me, he has done an incredible job balancing his natural tendency to retreat with the part of his heart that loves supporting others - in whatever way he can.   CONNECT WITH us ONLINE! Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “Human kindness has never weakened the stamina or softened the fiber of a free people. A nation does not have to be cruel to be tough.” Hi, I am James Lucas, owner of GrapeCat.com and I believe in living a life without cruelty. Grape Cat's mission is to offer attractive, functional products that people can buy with peace of mind knowing that all of our products are fair trade, vegan, Eco-friendly, and causing the least impact on the environment with human and non-human animals. Grape Cat is an online vegan retail store carrying all of your fashion needs from T-shirts to coats, and wallets to duffel bags, and everything in-between. We do not sell any products that are made of leather, wool, fur, or silk. We try to find fair trade items that help people in developing countries achieve better trading conditions and to promote sustainability. We also look for Eco-friendly products that reduce harm to the environment. A question I get a lot is “How did you get into this business?” I grew up with the typical American diet. We used to go to McDonald's for lunch and dinner when my parents were too tired to cook. At Thanksgiving, we would have turkey and at Christmas, we would have ham. I loved going to zoos and the aquarium. I was so fascinated by animals that I wanted to be a marine biologist. Like most people, I never connected my love of animals with my meat eating that is until, in 2002 while working for the Wall Street Journal, I started having lunch with a vegetarian. During lunch, we would talk about the food that I was eating and how it made its way from the farm to my plate. I learned about factory farming and the horrors these animals experience there. I slowly started connecting the dots between animals I loved to watch and pet, and the ones I was consuming. I first gave up beef and pork, and then chicken and turkey. By the end of 2002, I was a vegetarian. In 2009, I had an idea that I would start Bucks County Vegan Supper Club. I had it in my mind that I would be able to teach people how to cook their own vegan dishes. This eventually turned into a monthly potluck and has grown to a group of over 425 members. The group now does camping trips, goes to restaurants, and more. This group has helped me and other members become vegan. In 2011, I really wanted to go into the television business. A friend of mine said she thought it would be fun to do a cooking show. We started “From A to Vegan” with our spouses. At first, we were doing cooking videos and blog posts. Now the blog does the restaurant, cookbook, and product reviews, gastronomy tours, and commentary on current events. Since the nearest shops that sell vegan products are in NYC and in Maryland, everything that I bought was purchased online. After seeing how hard it was for me to find a local store that was carrying vegan clothing and accessories and after realizing the need, Grape Cat was born in March 2013. Our first year was tough as I learned that if you build it, they would not always come. 2014 was better as the website was being found in search engines and we were participating in more vegfests. This year we have expanded to New York, Massachusetts, Virginia, and North Carolina. Next year we are expanding into Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois. And this is where I need your help… The types of referrals I’m looking for are customers who are or would like to be conscious consumers, as well as fairs, community events, festivals, etc., and radio shows or podcasts. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/vegan-styled-life/support

The top of Ariana after their first trip up the Diamond. "We didn’t send. Nina went back and fired it a week or so later. I did Turning Point the night after we talked," according to James. Episode one, touch down. On Thunderpod's inaugural episode, we speak with Nina Williams and James Lucas, Fidi and I in a living room in Denver, Nina and James sharing a couch in Boulder. It's pretty romantic. Nina and James charted entirely different trajectories through the climbing world. James lived out of a broke down Saturn wagon for about 200 years, cutting his teeth and putting up new routes in Yosemite. Nina came up through the comp scene but soon broke out on her own, ticking off some of the scariest, hardest highball boulder problems in the nation. But, as you'll hear, transition is the name of the game for this duo. James blew up the Saturn with a detonator and sixteen sticks of dynamite and slid behind the desk at Climbing Magazine. He has a toilet. He has a closet. He no longer must pee into a Gatorade bottle. And he's one of the most interesting and engaging climbing writers scribbling for coin. He's also allowed his rack to take a back seat to a crashpad, recently spending a ton of time honing his skills as a boulderer. Nina, hunting for something meaningful and sustaining, headed back to school. She also pumped the brakes on those sweat-inducing, leg-snapping, possibly career ending highballs in favor of allowing her intuition to guide her through the climbing universe. She's picking up a trad rack more often, becoming more intimate with the national climbing community, and basically blossoming into one of the most impressive and thoughtful ambassadors that our sport has. We talk about all that good stuff and more, including James's soloing fall (and it's aftermath) in Joshua Tree, a wee bit of politics, how James and Nina met, how the hell Nina manages her fear on highballs like Ambrosia out in Bishop, micro-penises, and a tiny toe dip into "Free Solo." As mentioned during the pod, here are some interviews with Nina and James from other podcasts. You should listen to them, too. Nina on Training Beta here and Basecamp here and The Enormocast here. James on The Enormocast here, here, and here. Finally, thank you to Ryne Doughty for the rad music! Check him out...or become a musical pariah...here! Notes: Originally recorded in early October, 2018. James, to my knowledge, has never fiddled around with dynamite.
