[School of Movies 2026] This is a commissioned episode for Toby Skeels-Jungius and Chris Finik. It also happens to be our second show in a row about a bunch of stunningly animated ninja teens who are taught their skills by Jackie Chan, deal with both High School and abiding Daddy issues and wind up having to defend a metropolitan city from a Kaiju attack, thus proving their worth in the process, to the people, to their immediate family, and to themselves. Mutant Mayhem is in fact the TENTH Ninja Turtles movie, and it's up there with the very best of what has come before. On this show we recruit Willow who finally gets to talk about their favourite brothers, as we look back on creative choices of previous incarnations and what this one does to set itself apart. And while you could superficially say it has Spider-Verse animation, we hope that how we articulate the distinction gives you folks a clearer idea of what I'm terming ''Asymmetrical, Impressionist Graffiti'. Next week we begin a month-long project focusing on movies with the theme of Artificial Intelligence.

Character Design Issues: Turtles' designs were criticized as grotesque, reducing relatability and making action scenes less believable. Storytelling Problems: Over-explained plots, especially regarding April O'Neil and Eric Sacks, bogged down the movie's pacing and clarity. Setting Conflicts: The film's setting away from New York City limited key identity elements and iconic landmarks associated with the turtles. Mixed Reception of Cast: Alan Ritchson as Raphael received praise, while others like Johnny Knoxville and Megan Fox faced criticism for their roles. Cultural Context Matters: The film reflected a 2014 era not fully embracing nerd culture, impacting its creative choices and audience reception.   Notes Production and Narrative Challenges This 2014 Ninja Turtles movie struggled with a lack of creative love and identity, making it feel like a disjointed and ashamed adaptation of the franchise (00:00). Identity Crisis and Shame Factor heavily influenced the movie's tone and plot, with the film almost dropping the "Teenage Mutant" part and considering alien origins for the turtles (11:31). The film's producers inserted convoluted backstory elements mid-production to "course correct" a script that initially strayed far from the core Ninja Turtles mythos. This led to an over-explained, bogged-down narrative that felt like a "walk of shame" rather than an embrace of the IP's strengths. The era's mainstream culture had not fully embraced nerd properties, causing awkward attempts at modernization and distancing. Plot Bloat and Over-Explanation detracted from the movie's pacing and engagement, especially with April O'Neil's bloated and often unconvincing reporter storyline (20:53). Scenes focus too long on generic Michael Bay-style action and April's personal struggles rather than on the turtles themselves. The turtles are introduced late and spend much of the runtime as shadowy figures rather than engaging characters. Convoluted Villain Backstory with Eric Sacks as an unnecessary intermediary between Shredder and the turtles, adding complexity that did not improve the story (01:10:14). Removing or significantly trimming Sacks' role was proposed as a way to streamline the narrative. Mismatch in Tone and Style was evident, with the movie trying to be serious and gritty while relying on CGI-heavy, unrealistic action sequences that lacked tangible physicality (35:42). The film's heavy use of CGI and complex mech suit for Shredder overshadowed traditional martial arts choreography that defines the franchise. Character and Design Issues The film's character portrayals and designs undermined the essence of the Ninja Turtles, alienating fans and harming engagement (28:35). Turtle Designs Were Widely Disliked for being oversized, grotesque, and overly detailed with "human teeth" that made them less relatable and more monstrous (29:50). Their giant size and bulletproof nature reduced the importance of their ninja skills and made fight scenes less believable. Complex textures and too many visual details caused action scenes to become "CGI mush," making it hard to focus on key movements. Character Imbalance and Focus on Raphael turned the movie into essentially a Raphael-centric story, sidelining the other turtles and undermining the team dynamic (56:20). Alan Ritchson's portrayal of Raphael was praised as the best casting and performance in the film. Other turtles like Leonardo and Donatello were underused; Michelangelo was poorly written as an overly sexualized and annoying character. April O'Neil's Role and Writing were criticized for being unconvincing and bloated, with her professional competence and motivations feeling unrealistic and distracting (26:00). The forced "chosen one" connection between April and the turtles was seen as unnecessary and cheapened her acceptance of them. Supporting Characters like Will Arnett's cameraman were noted as relatively decent additions, providing human perspective and some humor without overwhelming the story (48:42). Setting and Visual Context The movie's setting choices and visual style weakened the core appeal of the franchise, distancing it from the turtles' iconic New York City roots (43:58). Misplaced Setting Outside New York City for large portions of the movie conflicted with the turtles' identity as New York City teens and vigilantes (44:50). Much of the film occurs in an ambiguous upstate New York mansion and mountain, disconnected from the urban environment central to the turtles' story. This choice limited opportunities to showcase iconic city landmarks and the turtles' connection to their home turf. Visual Style Reflects 2010s Orange-Teal Trend, which while vibrant, was harsh and contributed to a stylized look that did not fit the tone of the movie (16:45). Snowboarding and Chase Sequences were seen as fun and reminiscent of video game-inspired action but felt out of place and disconnected from the turtles' core habitat (48:42). These sequences resembled arcade game levels rather than integrated story moments. Proposed Fixes and Editorial Improvements A major consensus was that the movie could be improved significantly by cutting down excess plot and focusing much earlier and more on the turtles themselves (01:09:02). Streamline April's Story and Cut Eric Sacks to reduce narrative bloat and confusing backstory (01:10:14). Compress April's investigation into one clear sequence, eliminating multiple instances of Foot Clan encounters and confusing plot threads. Remove or minimize Sacks to focus villainy on Shredder and the Foot Clan. Introduce the Turtles Sooner and Add More Teenage Interactions to showcase their personalities and team dynamics earlier in the movie (01:10:14). Incorporate scenes like the elevator banter to emphasize their teenage traits and humor. Sprinkle in more Foot Clan fights to build suspense and showcase ninja action throughout. Focus on Making the Final Third Action-Packed but Clear, allowing the action sequences to flow without unnecessary interruptions (01:10:14). Keep the fight choreography that works, such as the Shredder vs. Splinter sequence, while trimming excess. Possible Reshoots or Edits to downplay or rework problematic story elements like April's "chosen one" status and the lab origin flashbacks (01:19:47). Use existing footage more efficiently to maintain story coherence while trimming excess. Emphasize Fun and Character Chemistry earlier to avoid the film feeling "all tension" and "boring" (01:15:07). Add small moments of levity, camaraderie, and ninja antics before the big action scenes. Maintain Realistic Expectations about how much could be changed given the film's production timeline and 2014-era constraints (01:25:21). Cast and Performances Certain casting choices were praised while others detracted from the film's overall impact on character believability (03:51). Alan Ritchson as Raphael was widely considered the best fit and performance, capturing Raphael's classic loner and heartfelt traits well (51:05). His emotional speech and portrayal of Raphael's arc were highlights. Johnny Knoxville as Leonardo was underused and miscast, with his limited screen time failing to do justice to the character (53:34). Megan Fox's April O'Neil was critiqued for lacking investment and acting strength, which weakened the emotional core of her storyline (24:35). Will Arnett's Cameraman Character was a positive surprise, providing light humor and a grounded human viewpoint without dominating the narrative (48:42). Whoopi Goldberg's Role was underutilized and seen as wasted potential given her talent (28:35). Franchise and Cultural Context The film reflects the cultural and franchise environment of the early 2010s, impacting its creative choices and reception (14:07). 2014 Era Nerd Culture Not Fully Embraced, leading to awkward attempts at modernization and distancing from the core turtle identity (14:07). The movie's shame about being a Ninja Turtles film echoes similar issues seen in early Transformers films. Comparisons with Other Ninja Turtles Iterations show this movie as weaker, especially compared to its sequel and animated projects like Mutant Mayhem that clearly love the source material (02:41). The sequel "Turtles Out of the Shadows" was noted as far more fun and faithful. Discussion of the Franchise's Multi-Generational Appeal highlighted the turtles' ability to adapt but also underscored the risk of losing core essence through unnecessary changes (06:18). Audience Distrust and Over-Explanation reflects a production that did not trust viewers to accept the turtles as they are, leading to excessive exposition and forced justifications (18:04). Product Placement and Minor Details like Windows Phones on characters' devices were noted as subtle but fun touches (01:02:00).

From Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman's creation of mutated turtles wielding nunchucks, the history of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles starts with humble, and slightly dark origins, but they would evolve from comic book characters to beloved animated icons and become their own pop culture phenomenon. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie franchise in total has accumulated $1.15 billion across six movies from three studios since 1990, and so when Paramount were looking to reboot existing IP, it made total sense to go for the heroes in a half shell, and to get permanent teenager Seth Rogen aboard.Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem blends 2D and 3D elements to create a fresh visual experience that sets it apart from previous Turtles adaptations, and for the first time uses actual teenagers to voice the Turtles, capturing their essence and making their teenage struggles relatable and authentic. It addresses themes of family and acceptance, resonating with audiences through the Turtles' journey to find their place in the world, as well as finding mutants just like themselves along the way. While the visuals are iconic, the film's soundtrack might be even more so, which features classic East Coast hip hop tracks, and a bit of Vanilla Ice's iconic 'Ninja Rap' from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. We were all expecting some exciting news and confirmations coming out of Marvel Studios' San Diego Comic-Con Hall H presentation, but nothing could have prepared us for the biggest and most shocking reveals; so, let's break down the tastiest Marvel morsels making waves: Jumping straight into the big Avengers News The Russos Bros were officially announced as the directors of both upcoming Avengers films. MCU veteran Stephen McFeely also was revealed to be writing the screenplays for both. The untitled fifth Avengers film that was once The Kang Dynasty, is now Avengers: Doomsday and is eyeing May 2026 for its release. The title and release of Avengers: Secret Wars was confirmed for May 2027. Robert Downey, Jr. will return to the MCU to play Dr. Doom. Captain America: Brave New World kicked off the proceedings where we learned: Harrison Ford's Thunderbolt Ross is, in fact, our Red Hulk Tiamut is the source of Adamantium in the MCU Giancarlo Esposito's mystery character is Sidewinder, a leader of the Serpent Society After a Thunderbolts* cast appearance, the focus switched to the Fantastic Four film, which was revealed to include the subtitle: First Steps; with the titular cast taking the stage even as filming just began in London. Regarding would-be Marvel saviors, Deadpool & Wolverine, this year's sole theatrical outing for Marvel Studios, was an absolute monster at the box office, hauling in more than $211 million domestically in its opening weekend. That was enough to make it the sixth highest opening of all time in the States, as well as the highest opening for an R-rated film ever; And it was no slouch worldwide either, with an impressive $444.3 million 3-day opening globally. While the Distinguished Competition did not have nearly as visible a presence at Comic-Con this year, the week was still full of noteworthy updates from DC Studios. First, figurehead James Gunn unveiled a new logo for the studio with a simple, clean design that, much like his version of Superman appears to, harkens back to the Golden Age of comics. Additionally, we got our first look at the DCU's debut project, Creature Commandos, via a trailer that showcased the show's animation and each team member in action. Lastly, it's a double dose of Penguin news, as the third trailer for the upcoming Colin Farrell-led HBO original series hit the internet alongside the news that Matt Reeve's and Bruce Timm's Batman: Caped Crusader series at Amazon will feature a female Penguin. We'd be remiss if we didn't acknowledge the reason Comic-Con exists in the first place… The Comics! Thankfully, our resident aficionado is here to give us a snapshot of the latest and greatest happenings from the panels and pages of our favorite fictional universes. Take it away, Hayley: SAG-AFTRA is striking against major video game companies after nearly two years of unsuccessful negotiations for its Interactive Media Agreement. The strike began on July 26 at 12:01 a.m. Last week on July 25, Kevin Feige received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Several actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe were in attendance for the ceremony. Dune and Mission: Impossible star Rebecca Ferguson has joined the cast of Netflix's upcoming Peaky Blinders movie and will star alongside Cillian Murphy. The long-rumored Spawn movie may finally emerge from development hell. With a script titled King Spawn now completed, creator Todd McFarlane and Blumhouse's Jason Blum are set to meet with directors. At San Diego Comic-Con, Paramount unveiled the title sequence for the upcoming animated series Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Set in the universe of 2023's Mutant Mayhem, it will bridge that film and its sequel. The series streams on Paramount+ starting August 9.

The Phoenix Force and Other Drama This week on the Podcast, Brian and Darryl are back after an unexpected hiatus due to Brian’s Achilles Tendon surgery, and they are reviewing the second half of X-Men ’97 season 1! Episode Index Intro: 0:07 X-Men ’97: 4:02 X-Men ’97 (Disney+) Out 10 Are Charles and Magnus an Items Darryl: 9/10 Brian: 8.5/10 Season Summary X-Men ’97 begins with Cyclops uncovering a new anti-mutant technology, leading to a reunion with an old foe and the addition of a new team member. Magneto, now leading the X-Men due to Charles Xavier’s last will, faces trial for his past crimes, while anti-mutant rioters test his resolve. As the team confronts a visitor with a dangerous secret, Jubilee is transported into a 16-bit video game, reliving the X-Men’s greatest adventures. The season continues with Genosha preparing to join the UN, leading to political intrigue and media scrutiny for the X-Men. Storm faces her worst fears in a two-part storyline involving her relationship with Forge. Cyclops targets Bolivar Trask but discovers a deeper manipulation at play. The season culminates in a three-part epic where the X-Men must unite against a formidable new threat, challenging their unity and the dream of peaceful mutant-human coexistence Episode 6: “Lifedeath (Part 2)” Directed by: Chase Conley Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: April 17, 2024 Summary: During a war between the Shi’ar and Kree empires, Shi’ar empress Lilandra Neramani announces her engagement to a now-healed Xavier. Refusing to accept her sister marrying a Terran, Deathbird invokes the Rite of M’Dashaa and challenges Xavier to purge all his memories of Earth to prove his loyalty to the Shi’ar. Xavier’s refusal to renounce his memories of the X-Men results in a battle between the Shi’ar Imperial Guard and Deathbird’s supporters until Xavier pulls everyone into the astral plane to educate them on co-existence. When this lesson is interrupted by a psychic vision of Gambit’s death, Xavier returns to Earth. At the ranch, Forge uses his mother’s spell book to expel the demon and then Storm helps him search for a rare cactus that cures the poison. Storm finds the cactus in a cave but is again cornered by the Adversary. Overcoming her fears, Storm regains her powers and defeats the Adversary. Storm heals Forge, and then they learn about the attack on Genosha. Elsewhere, Trask is confronted by Mister Sinister who warns that Genosha was just the beginning. Episode 7: “Bright Eyes” Directed by: Emi Yonemura Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: April 24, 2024 Summary: As the X-Men hold a funeral for Gambit, Rogue angrily searches for Gyrich and Trask. After gaining information from General Thunderbolt Ross and Captain America, Rogue finds Gyrich in Mexico and absorbs his memories. Gyrich is murdered later that night. While assisting in the recovery efforts at Genosha, the X-Men are contacted by a terrified Trask who tells them that he is in Madripoor. They get Rogue on the way. Roberto and Jubilee visit Roberto’s mother and tell her that he is a mutant; she asks him to keep his identity a secret. In Madripoor, the X-Men learn that Sinister and the UN’s secret “OZT” division have been developing a highly advanced Sentinel program. Rogue drops Trask to his death, unknowingly activating programming that turns him into a human–Sentinel hybrid. Cable arrives, defeats Trask with an EMP, and explains that Sinister is working with a greater threat that they must stop. This threat, who murdered Gyrich, is Bastion. He reveals to Sinister that Xavier is alive in space and that Magneto, presumed dead in the Genosha attack, is also alive and is Bastion’s prisoner. Episode 8: “Tolerance is Extinction (Part 1)” Directed by: Jake Castorena Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: May 1, 2024 Summary: Part 1 : The UN reveals to the world that Xavier is alive, inciting an anti-mutant protest outside the school. Cable explains to the X-Men that the Genosha massacre is an “absolute point” in time that cannot be changed, and Bastion will use it to start a 300-year war that will lead to the enslavement of mutants in a human utopia. Cyclops, Jean, and Cable travel to Harmony, Pennsylvania, where they learn that Bastion is a human–machine hybrid who was conceived after his father was infected with part of the advanced, time-traveling Sentinel Nimrod. Members of “Operation: Zero Tolerance” (OZT) express concern over the massacre and ask Dr. Cooper to monitor Bastion, who explains to her how he is turning humans into Prime Sentinels like Trask using Sinister’s techno-organic virus. Prime Sentinels activate around the globe, attack mutants, and burn down Xavier’s school. A horrified Cooper releases Magneto, who creates a world-wide blackout that kills thousands of people and shuts down all of the Prime Sentinels. Wolverine fears that Magneto has declared war as Xavier returns and summons the X-Men. Episode 9: “Tolerance is Extinction (Part 2)” Directed by: Chase Conley Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: May 8, 2024 Summary: Part 2 : Xavier is met with some distrust, but the X-Men focus on stopping Bastion and convincing Magneto to reverse his blackout. Magneto re-establishes his mutant haven on Asteroid M, choosing to leave the Earth without power and rejecting Xavier’s dream of mutant/human co-existence. He invites the X-Men to join him, which Rogue and Roberto do. The rest of the X-Men return to their former base on Muir Island to regroup, before splitting into two teams: Cyclops’s Blue Team goes to Asteroid M to confront Magneto while Storm and Jean’s Gold Team heads to Bastion’s hideout in the Galápagos Islands. Beast and Forge create a collar that can block Bastion’s technopathy and sever his control over the Sentinels. The Gold Team battles an army of Bastion-controlled Sentinels and Sinister, who takes control of Cable’s mind and uses him to overpower Jean; she sends a desperate psychic message to Cyclops. On Asteroid M, Xavier attempts to take control of Magneto’s mind but is blocked. Wolverine stabs and seriously injures Magneto who begins ripping the adamantium metal from Wolverine’s skeleton. Episode 10: “Tolerance is Extinction (Part 3)” Directed by: Emi Yonemura Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: May 15, 2024 Summary: Part 3 : With Wolverine critically injured, Xavier takes control of Magneto and restores power to Earth, fracturing Magneto’s mind. Jean—connecting to the cosmic power of the Phoenix—places the collar on Bastion, restoring the Prime Sentinels’ humanity, and reverses Sinister’s mutant augmentations which frees Cable. The X-Men fight to prevent Bastion from crashing Asteroid M into Earth and causing a new extinction event. Still, it plummets after the U.S. government launches missiles at the asteroid hoping to destroy it. With Xavier’s help, Magneto regains consciousness and sends the asteroid into space. It explodes and most of the X-Men are presumed dead. Six months later, Bishop arrives and tells Forge that the X-Men are trapped in time: Cyclops and Jean are in 3960 A.D., a desolate future where they encounter Mother Askani and a young Nathan; and Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, Xavier, and Magneto are in Ancient Egypt in 3000 B.C. where they meet En Sabah Nur, a young version of Apocalypse. In a mid-credits scene, Apocalypse finds one of Gambit’s playing cards in present-day Genosha. X-Men '97 is executive produced by Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Beau DeMayo. The series features music by the Newton Brothers.
