Kara Winger has been the top American javelin thrower for 15 years. This season was her last, and she went out in style. Her season highlights included a world number 1 ranking, Diamond League title, World Championships silver medal, and an American record. She joins us on this week's podcast with her husband and coach Russ Winger to discuss what made this season such a success. For more information on this topic, read the complete show notes at: https://www.hmmrmedia.com/2022/09/hmmr-podcast-episode-283-going-out-on-top-with-kara-and-russ-winger/ » Support the show: join HMMR PLUS to get full access to our coaching resources. You can follow Kara Winger on Instagram (@karathrowsjav) as well as Russ (@russthrowsstuff and @longdraw_woodworks). Winger's retirement has been the subject of a lot of recent media, including these articles from Track and Field News and World Athletics. We've had several javelin throwers and coaches on our podcasts in the past, including Episode 268 with coach Asmund Martinsen and Episode 193 with Dana Lyon. The GAINcast has also featured GAINacst 156 with European champion Steve Backley, GAINcast 175 with coach Mike Barber, GAINcast 237 with Debbie Strange, GAINcast 106 with Goldie Sayers, GAINcast 229 with Kevin McGill, and GAINcast 230 with Ken Shannon. We also put together a video of specific strength exercises for the javelin from Irish record holder and World Championship finalist Terry McHugh.
"To go out on top — there are so few athletes that can say that, and that really wasn't my plan! I just wanted to know when it would be over so that I could put everything that I had into each throw." Kara Winger had long planned for 2022 to be her final javelin season. And what a final season it was! The four-time Olympian capped off her 18-year international career by winning her first global medal (silver, at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, OR), and becoming the first U.S. woman to medal in the javelin at a world championships event. She set a new American record. She took the win at the Wanda Diamond League final. And, after 12 years, she finally broke her own personal record. In this conversation, Kara reflects on her career and on what it means to go out on top. She talks about the support she has felt in the track and field community, and about when she made the decision to retire. She talks about being chosen to be the Team USA flag bearer at last summer's Tokyo Olympic Games, and talks about the struggles she's faced with injuries (two ACL tears and a labrum tear in her left shoulder) and setbacks. Now, the Tracksmith-sponsored athlete will begin the next chapter of her career as the senior director for Parity, an organization dedicated to closing the gender pay gap in sports. With the Winter Olympic Games upon us, it's perfectly fitting to bring Lauren Gibbs back on the show. If you haven't already heard Lauren's incredible journey from the corporate world to the Olympic podium in just three years while in her 30s, all you need to do is go back to Episode 6 - 'You're Never Too Old To Dream Big with Olympic Medalist' - and listen to her hilarious and wild journey into the world of bobsled. Throughout her career, she has made eight national teams, competed in 44 World Cups, and has won 17 World Cup medals, two World Championship medals, one of which was gold in 2020, and an Olympic medal in 2018. Today, Lauren provides an update on her incredible story. She picks up the story at the point where the pandemic began to derail training and sponsorships, and goes on to describe the mindset shift she went through and the value of always being ready to pivot. As always, Lauren is open, candid, and vulnerable, as she discusses not being chosen for the Olympic team a second time, the struggle of keeping a certain weight to compete, and how she became friends with her competitors. She also offers some great advice about learning how to tell your story to attract sponsors and supporters, and about different apps to help athletes on various stages of their journey. Lauren finishes up by giving us a rundown of athletes to keep an eye out for at the Winter Games, and an update on what she is up to these days, especially her work with Heroic. A remarkable woman with an equally remarkable story to share, Lauren Gibbs demonstrates once again here today that she is a talented, resilient, and inspiring individual from whom we can all learn so very much about both sport and life in general. Episode Highlights: Lauren Gibb's astonishing career from age 30 How she was affected by the pandemic Lauren's work with Kara Winger on Parity How she pivoted and supported herself with COVID and the Tokyo games being postponed Lauren's physical, emotional, and mental state Her advice and insight for aspiring athletes The value of sharing your story in your athletic career Her transformation from high school and college to now The difference between quitting and knowing when it's time to move on The uniqueness of bobsled and how Lauren navigated its complexity The adrenaline letdown after success Lauren's friendship and connection with Kaillee Humphries and Elana Meyers Taylor The competitive dynamics among women in the same team in sports The challenges women face in sports, particularly Olympics Insights on the upcoming Winter Sports and exciting newcomers Update on what Lauren is currently doing Details about Heroic and her work there Quotes: "It's been tough to see people struggle. I've been very fortunate, but I enjoy life with other people. And so, to see people around you and people you don't know struggling is always hard. My heart goes out to anybody that's been adversely affected by the pandemic. That's a lot of people." "Then, when the pandemic hit, everything went away. And it was a quick lesson to me on how quickly life can change and how you have to prepare for a pivot. So you always have to be ready for a pivot." "Olympics was never my end goal when I started bobsled, which I think sounds probably crazy to most people." "You have to figure out what your story is because everybody has a story that people can learn and grow from." "People just want to know about real people. They want to know about your struggles, successes, and the weird things you do in your sport that people would never think of. So share as much as yourself as feels comfortable, but also remember, once you share it, you can't take it back. So really show up as yourself." "Don't try and be this person you think everybody wants to see or hear from because no matter who you are, there's enough people in this world that your story will click with - the people that it needs to click with." "As someone who's on the other side, I can't wait to help athletes that need help in their journey because people help me. So I think just realize that more people out there want to help you than you think. So you've got to share your story and figure out what you're all about." "I was one of those people who were fairly good at a lot of things. And so, when things got difficult, I would just quit. And I've realized that quitting feels worse than failing. And I was always more afraid of failure than I was excited for success, that I would quit before I got there. I've learned that that's more dissatisfying because you don't really learn anything from just quitting." "That conversation with my dad was such a gift. He wasn't telling me that the Olympics weren't worth my time or worthless. Basically, he was telling me that the Olympics don't define Lauren Gibbs. And it can be so easy for an athlete to feel defined by their successes or losses in a sport. That's unhealthy. That's not good. You should do it because you love it. " "You are not your sport; your sport is something that you do." "If you're depending on this result to change how you feel about life or yourself, whether you get the result or not, it's not going to do it." "That's how you become a leader at anything. You have a goal in mind, and you work towards that daily. It really focuses on the small wins and the daily activity and then having this great support system." Welcome to Episode 20 of the Through the Point Podcast This week I actually brought back two guests from earlier episodes, I had on the outstanding duo of Kara Winger and Ariana Ince It was fun to catch up with them as they have been living together in Colorado and training for the past 3 months The focus of this episode was “things they wish they knew” and “transitioning from college to post-collegiate meets” We talked about getting sponsors, finding meets (and being nice to the meet directors), as well as best way to fall asleep on long flights plus much, much more! Its always fun to talk to these two and I'm looking forward to seeing the results from their potential 1 on 1 meet soon! Check them out on Instagram @karathrowsjav and @arianaince and check out my page @throughthepoint_podcast while you're at! As always, thanks for listening and enjoy Song: Coast to Coast by Galassie ft. PmBata https://open.spotify.com/track/7nT5X5VBAhhUiInFB1XOK0?si=RCqt4tsFQmSi1mKhXV1HlA
Welcome to Episode 4 of the Through the Point Podcast, the world's #1 (and only) javelin podcast! This episode is an interview with 3x Olympian, 8x National Champ, and US Women's record holder Kara Winger! Disclaimer: In the intro I said she threw 66.76, it's actually only 66.67. Sorry Kara haha (: We talk about where she is training, her high school/college careers, post-collegiate, Olympics, and much much more! Kara is awesome and I think everyone will enjoy this one!
Kara Winger, three-time Olympian and 8-time U.S. National Champion, is one of the best at what may be track and field’s most idiosyncratic sport: javelin throwing. Kara talks about her mental game, and how it helps her set big but achievable goals. And with a degree in fitness, nutrition and health, she’s refreshingly open and insightful about weight and body image in sport. She talks about how her views have evolved & about how it felt to hit a new milestone when she stepped on a scale last spring.
This week, Coach Frontier's guest on the show is Kara Winger. Kara is the US Record Holder in the Javelin 218'8" - 66.67m, 8-Time USATF National Champion, and 3-Time Olympian. She finished 5th at 2019 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS in Doha. She thinks everyone should try the Javelin and with her enthusiasm for the event...I can't think of a reason why not! www.throwbigthrowfar.com www.madisonthrowsclub.com www.porta-circle.com www.rodhesport.com This podcast is powered by ZenCast.fm
Take it from someone who knows from experience - to reach your potential in sport, life, and business you MUST have hard conversations. Kara has learned that honesty, transparency, and the courage to have tough conversations is KEY to optimal performance. In our full interview, we talk about a LOT more interesting things about life as an olympic athlete, what it takes to stay at the top of your sport for a decade, and the business of being an athlete. Check out the full interview here.
Kara Winger has competed 3x in the Olympic games for Team USA as a women's javelin thrower. Her longevity in the sport has spanned over a decade of elite performance and is unmatched in her event. Throughout her career in a demanding sport, Kara has learned the skills to THRIVE mentally, physically, and emotionally as she has faced obstacles, adversity, and injury. We discuss: When and how Kara knew that her goal was to go to the Olympic games How to have a healthy and vibrant relationship as a pro athlete Finding balance in a lifestyle that demands total dedication Her development as a mental athlete and how to cultivate the mindset of a champion A day-in-the-life of an elite athlete The business of being an elite athlete - sponsor relationships, social media, and how to stay true to yourself while using your platform for the greater good The Olympic games experience from an athletes perspective - from walking in the opening ceremonies, to meeting other high profile athletes, to witnessing history as a fan and spectator and much more... I really enjoyed this conversation and could have easily continued chatting with Kara. She's down-to-earth but has the swagger of someone who knows what she's capable of. My key take-aways from our conversation: Focusing on improvement over time vs. other people's goals leads to success and fulfillment Compartmentalizing life and finding balance outside of your primary focus (work, athletics, etc) leads to more focused effort and greater efficiency The importance of communication - with your partner, team, coaches, etc - for breaking through mental barriers and achieving the next level of success Resources: Beijing opening ceremony 2008 Kara's Facebook page Kara's Instagram Kara's Twitter Maddie Dog's Instagram Olympians For Public Lands Kara's website Kara's favorite podcasts: TED Radio Hour, Skimm'd from The Couch, Believed
