Her latest book is Bitch: The Journey of a Word. In this episode, we focus on Bitch. We start by talking about the origins of the word “bitch”, how it relates to dog and slut, how it acquired the meaning of “unpleasant woman”, and how meanings in general change over time. We also discuss how it has been used as a pejorative against feminists, and how the word was reclaimed by them. We talk about the sexist ideas it is associated with, how it relates to the c-word, how it is used to insult men, and how it ties to gender roles. We also talk about the expression “son of a bitch”, and how people use the word “bitch” today.--A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. If one looks at the English language, there are many terms now considered offensive that were considered commonplace, perhaps even sensitive, just a few decades ago. A typical pattern tends to emerge – a word is used to describe a particular group, perhaps innocently at first, and over time, it can become misused and turn into a slur. Another word comes in to replace it, but with time, that word too becomes misused and a slur. New words and phrases can be coined multiple times over the course of a few decades as the initial word becomes stigmatized. But is this a good thing? Or has society become too sensitive? Is The Euphemism Treadmill, as it has become known, a good thing? We're chuffed to welcome the esteemed hosts of MONSTER TALK, Dr Karen Stollznow and Blake Smith, to the cabin to talk about the 1957 movie THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN. Written by the tremendous, influential British writer Nigel Kneale, this has got to be one of the best, and most interesting, cryptic films ever made. The fact that it hails from the days of 1950s yeti-mania makes it an important marker of a cultural cryptozoological moment - but even so, Kneale finds ways to put his own stamp on the monster. Our conversation includes: -The work of Nigel Kneale -Orientalism in the film -the trope of psychic relict hominoids -pelts & paws cryptozoology vs mystical interpretation -the character ‘Tom Friend' representing the real-life monster hunter Tom Slick -real-life expeditions that inspired the movie -Yetis as understood in their own countries -Cryptozoology and colonialism (again!) -when to show the monster? -Cryptid movie recommendations LINKS Monster Talk: Yeti Stories You've Never Heard Before (a listening must!) Blake and Karen help debunk dismissive presumptions by advocating the relevancy of paranormal skepticism in today's world! As the hosts of MonsterTalk, the long-running science show about monsters, they have interviewed a plethora of academics who research belief in monsters from a social science viewpoint, despite modern skepticism's tendency towards rationalism and reductionist-materialism. But if monsters don't exist, why are we still talking about them, and what can they actually teach us? Blake and Karen make the case for monsters as gateways towards scientific thought, sources of historical and cultural insight, and personifications which help us form our own beliefs and suspicions. ====================== Huge THANK YOU!!! to Blake Smith and Dr. Karen Stollznow for this amazing and insightful conversation, as well as all the support and kind reception they provide our community of small indie creators ❤️ Check out their podcast MonsterTalk HERE or on monstertalk.org For extra content check their YouTube channel, or if you wish to hear more F-bombs check their Patreon as well. Whether framed as complaints about cancel culture or as increased awareness of prejudice, stories about offensive language are common in our daily news cycle. In On the Offensive: Prejudice in Language Past and Present (Cambridge UP, 2020), linguist Karen Stollznow explores the history of language that offends, including talk about race and ethnicity, gender, religion, mental health, physical appearance, and age. Her book tells the origin story of how terms come to have the power to offend. It also investigates the euphemism treadmill, the phenomenon of offensive terms being replaced with new, neutral terms which eventually become offensive as well. Despite the large number of terms the book deals with, she argues that it isn't impossible to keep track of what's offensive and what isn't. By explaining the background to our language and its implications for the lived experiences of human beings, Stollznow hopes the book will enable its readers to examine their own language and its power—for harm and for good. Malcolm Keating is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Yale-NUS College. His research focuses on Sanskrit philosophy of language and epistemology. He is the author of Language, Meaning, and Use in Indian Philosophy (Bloomsbury Press, 2019) and host of the podcast Sutras (and stuff).

She is also a prolific author, having published academic works, non-fiction as well as fiction. Dr. Karen Stollznow In this episode, we open with the ways in which we judge and stereotype each other based on the dialect and language that we use and move on to the meanings of words and how the change in time and space. Not only does the cafe lose the accent after a time, but bad words turn good and good words turn bad. It's hysterical, how that works. We marked this episode "explicit" because we discuss some of the words that are not used in polite language and how the relative offense of using some words varies based on where the speaker is as well as how the audience may be.
