Star Wars: Visions released all nine episodes on the same September day and Steve has been taking his time watching one at a time. Episode Four is, in his opinion, a return to efficiency and efficacy in storytelling, much like his feelings on "The Duel." Once again, the soundtrack is as much a star of the show as the characters, and is available to consider on Spotify for Kevin Penkin's 10 tracks. It may not be Steve's favorite (though give him some time and he may change his mind), but it's rumored to be the selection by the show for Academy Award consideration in the animated short film category. Steve recaps "The Village Bride", talks about the Filmmaker Focus featurette, and considers whether the kind of Visions episodes you like says something about the type of Star Wars fan you might represent. I finally got around to watching the Netflix Original (a real one) anime series, Eden. I enjoyed it, but it definitely has its flaws, that mostly stem from the short 4 episode runtime and fairly common scifi theme. Not the soundtrack by Kevin Penkin though. That was beautiful! We talk about Kevin's musical background, his artistic process, influences and inevitably we all get 'Perthed'.
What an amazing production! All around! Everything about this show was super captivating and the music alone had us on the edge of our seats, holding our breath! Kevin Penkin blew our freaking butts off with one hell of an OST. A chat with the marvellous Kevin Penkin for our newest episode. Enjoy!
Oh you thought for SURE we were gone for good, but in fact we have RETURNED! In this episode of our ongoing love letter to video games, video game music, vinyl records, and video game music on vinyl records, Anthony and Jeremy hold down the fort to discuss a couple of new favorites! First, Jeremy begins with the iam8bit vinyl release for Florence, a charming little mobile-only game published by Annapurna Interactive. We explore the simple and wordless thematic elements of the game about romantic relationship, and how the score by Kevin Penkin fills in the missing dialogue with intertwining instrumentals. Paul, absent from the show today, more fully explores the personal meaning of the game in his piece for Eurogamer. Next, Anthony brings in the classic (perhaps TOO classic) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, which never received an official licensed release but actually saw two unofficial records circulate in the community in the past 12 months. Anthony picks a couple of favorite tracks by the master composer Koji Kondo. This segues into our third segment discussion of pressed versus lathed records, the different approaches to preparing the music for the format, and... a bit of that "Legend of Zelda fatigue" we might all be suffering from. Then we remember to come back to the news, and of course we discuss new releases, crowdfunding, represses, and rumors! Poverty is a somber thing to end the show on, but we have to stop somewhere. Thanks, as always, for listening!
