Another amazing conversation this time with a creative voice that worked to create real change in the comics industry.Barbara Randall Kesel is a comic book writer and editor with work for DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, Image, and CrossGen. At Dark Horse, she helped create the Golden City setting. She entered comics by writing a critique on female character portrayals to editor Dick Giordano. A vocal opponent of sexism in the industry, she is known for strong female characters, including Grace from Comics' Greatest World. She was a Harvey Award nominee in 1995 and 1996, winning for Hellboy: The Wolves of St. August.Barbara discusses how writing a 10 page letter to DC comics secured her a job, finding the right fit in the companies she worked for and how approaching angry fans with kindness may be a better approach. Welcome to episode 41 of 2 Grooms 1 Plot! A podcast where two life-long storytellers talk about stories! On today's episode, we continue our summer series breaking down each episode of the show, ‘Mary & George.' In the 5th episode of the series, ‘The Golden City,' as Mary gains more power, her marriage with Sir Thomas deteriorates, while Diego, Count of Gondomar, informs King James of Sir Walter Raleigh's attack on the Spanish in Guiana, which defies a peace treaty. George, now part of the Privy Council, naively supports Raleigh's tales of war and gold, unaware of Raleigh's true intentions, leading to tension as Prince Charles grows more bitter and Queen Anne falls ill. Amidst this political turmoil, George faces the harsh reality of his influence when King James orders Raleigh's execution, and Mary realizes she is losing control over George. On this week's Hemp Podcast, I recap my recent visit to the Heart of Europe, the Golden City, the City of a Hundred Spires, the capital city of the Czech Republic and the historical capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia — Prague. The occasion for my trip was the European Industrial Hemp Association's 21st annual Conference, this year held in the Czech Republic. I was invited to be part of an American delegation representing the American hemp industry. The trip was funded through a grant from the USDA Market Access Program, or MAPS. The Market Access Program allows the Foreign Agricultural Service, the FAS, to partner with American trade associations, cooperatives, trade groups and small business “to share the costs of overseas marketing and promotional activities that help build commercial export markets for U.S. agricultural products and commodities,” according to the USDA website. The National Industrial Hemp Council was given official cooperator status by the USDA earlier this year, giving it access to MAP funding. At the conference, I witnessed my fellow Americans developing relationships and making business deals, and I saw the purpose of the USDA's Market Access Program playing out in real time. During the conference, I interviewed over 30 hemp people from around the world. On this episode we'll hear what people had to say about hemp in Europe, what the U.S. can learn from the Europeans, what the Europeans can learn from the U.S., and a whole lot more. Before the conference started June 5, Lorenza Romanese, managing director of the European Industrial Hemp Association, was hopeful for a successful event. “I hope that people will engage. I hope that people will go back home knowing more than what they knew when they arrived,” she said. “I hope that they are able to develop business opportunities.” Francesco Mirizzi is senior policy advisor at EIHA and focuses on the fiber and grain sectors. He said the fiber industry is well developed in Europe, thanks in large part to farmers and processors in France. “We kept production in Europe after the Second World War, and we have something like seven or eight big size decortication facilities that allowed us to build a market for fiber,” he said, “mostly dedicated to specific paper application composites, and especially in the automobile industry, and fibers for insulation material in construction and chives (hurd) for construction, like hempcrete.” An epicenter of hemp construction in Europe is war-torn Ukraine, less than 800 miles to the east of Prague. Sergiy Kovalenkov is a Ukranian hemp builder who has been teaching refugees displaced by Russia's war on Ukraine how to rebuild with hemp. “We train the refugees, the people that lost their houses. And they started to build their own homes during the war using local biomass,” he said. “So when you tell me you have problems, trust me, let's go to Ukraine. I'll show you what problems are,” he said. Hana Gabrielová, a recent podcast guest, is from Czech Republic and was instrumental in bringing the conference to her home country. She has worked with hemp for over 20 years and is involved in many ares of hemp in Europe, including as a board member of EIHA as well as a member of the CzecHemp Cluster, an advisory board to help guide and grow the Czech hemp industry domestically and abroad. Gabrielová was very kind to me, pointing me in the right direction on Czech food, restaurants, pilsner, and what I should see while visiting this ancient city. She recommended the svíčková (pronounced sveech-covah), which she described as the national dish consisting of a root vegetable cream sauce and high quality beef sirloin, served with dumplings. It was good. As for what to see in Prague, she said I should see the astronomical clock in Old Town Square and the Charles Bridge over the River Vltava. “They are not far from each other,” she said. “Prague is not too big so you can walk it out and have a nice afternoon and see everything basically,” she said. I took her advice and wandered around the city each day after the conference ended. I cannot express to you how impressive the city was to me, with its ancient streets of cobblestone and castles and medieval fortresses. So much history in one place. But not all ancient history. I was inspired to learn more about the Velvet Revolution that took place in 1989. It started as student protests against the one party rule of the Czechoslovakian Communist Party. Within a week, the crowd grew to over 500,000 people in Wenceslas Square, shaking their house keys, telling the communists to step down and go home. It worked. By the end of the month, the party relinquished control over the people. I think we can all learn lessons from this story. We the people hold the power. My special guest is author Maxim Furek here to discuss astonishing first-hand accounts from trapped miners that reportedly saw strange beings and entrances to Hollow Earth. Get the book Sheppton: The Myth, Miracle & Music on Amazon. The Sheppton Mythology... In 1963, three miners were entombed more than 300 feet underground near remote Sheppton, Pennsylvania. Although two were eventually rescued, the other simply disappeared. Something fantastic happened in that soulless place devoid of forgiveness and light. It was a black hell, a total darkness where the ability to see depth or movement was eradicated. Vision was painfully ripped away by powerful forces and yet, even without the gift of sight, the trapped men were somehow able to see. While confined, the miners saw bizarre humanoid creatures and stairwells leading to a Golden City. They claimed to have been in the presence of his Holiness Pope John XXIII. Scholars, scientists and Vatican academics, all reached the same conclusion: the survivors were telling the truth about their ordeal. Some researchers have suggested that Sheppton is entwined with the controversial “Hollow Earth Theory,” while others claim it provides proof of life after death. “Timothy,” recorded by The Buoys, eerily paralleled Sheppton as it introduced allegations of cannibalism. Steeped in the miraculous, the supernatural and the dreadful, Sheppton has become greater than the sum of its parts. *************************************************************** Maxim W. Furek is a Music Journalist and avid student of the Coal Region. His investigation into Sheppton's urban legend probes the difficult question: What really happened in the mine? In this transmission, I share a story about an incredibly beautiful, powerful and highly coded conscious dream about The Golden City of Atlantis. Over the last few years, I have mastered the art of conscious (or lucid) dreaming. When I dream I am conscious of the fact I am dreaming and so I can act willingly and choose to make specific decisions. I am also able to observe myself in the dream acting a certain way. I can then see how the way I act affects the outcome of the dream. This is a powerful practice which makes dreamtime an incredible adventure full of downloads, codes, lessons and experiences. Continue watching to discover the magical conscious dream and 8 powerful lessons and keys of ascension that were coded in it. I also share tips on how you can start conscious dreaming yourself! I am sharing this with you to demonstrate how powerful it is to be able to access the ability to channel your multidimensional network on a conscious level during dream states. This episode covers: * What is conscious dreaming * Chapter 1: Travelling to the Golden City of Atlantis * Dreamtime lesson 1: To reach heaven on earth, you must be fully present in the now * Dreamtime lesson 2: All of you is welcome on the ascension journey * Dreamtime lesson 3: We don't need to know everything to access the higher realms, we just have to follow our gut * Chapter 2: Going on a journey to find the Golden City with my dog and my golden phoenix inner child * Dreamtime lesson 4: We are never alone * Dreamtime lesson 5: We will lose ourselves when we feel shame * Chapter 3: Finding the hidden Golden City of Atlantis * Dreamtime lesson 6: Never follow others, always follow your inner guidance * Dreamtime lesson 7: You need to be a revolutionary & a rebel to get things done Chapter 4: Receiving from the Egyptian Goddess, Bastet * Dreamtime lesson 8: We always receive the assistance we need in our darkest times (and all our lives) * Chapter 5: The initiation into the Golden City * Tips on how to conscious dream * Dragon Warrior Codex * Eeria School of Channeling Links: Dragon Warrior Codex - 2 day event - 29 & 30 November: https://cendrines.kartra.com/page/dragonwarriorevent Eeria School of Channeling: https://cendrines.kartra.com/page/eeria The Courage to Lead: https://cendrines.kartra.com/page/steppingintoleadershipmasterclass
Is it possible that the fall of San Francisco, a city once known for its allure and charm, was actually orchestrated by a select group of billionaires? Tune in to our latest episode as we entertain this eerie conspiracy, fueled by engaging discussions, Joe Rogan's insights, and a thought-provoking tweet. We dissect San Francisco's transformation into what many perceive as a failed state, rife with rampant crime. We delve into the uncanny relocation of a farmer's market, the peculiar ushering in of a skate park, and comedians' witty takes on the ongoing debacle. The intrigue doesn't stop there. We investigate the powerful sway of the uber-wealthy and the drastic changes that have marred California's lauded landscapes. We scrutinize the environmental fallout of Tuli Lake's drainage aimed at creating farmland for veterans. The discourse gets more intense as we consider potential corruption, the repercussions of police defunding, the surge in anti-Asian and anti-white hate, and the unnerving influx of migrants. We take a hard look at the homeless industrial complex and the creation of potential billions in wealth. Before we close, we contemplate the implications of a 'social credit' system, the concept of a '15-minute city', and the alleged US government's involvement in the 'crack epidemic'. It's a whirlwind of thought-provoking discussions that will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about the Golden City.Support the show
Ralph welcomes civic activist, writer and filmmaker, Pete Davis, to discuss “Join or Die,” a film about why you should join a club—and why the fate of America depends on it. Then Professor Scott Sklar, an expert on sustainable infrastructure joins us to talk about one of the easiest ways we can reduce our energy consumption and slow down the pace of our overheating planet: white roofs. Plus, Ralph has some choice words about the media's coverage of the Republican presidential campaign and also how we don't truly celebrate Labor Day. And speaking of labor, Steve gives us an update on the Writers' and Actors' strike.Pete Davis is a writer and civic advocate. He is the author of Dedicated: The Case for Commitment in An Age of Infinite Browsing, co-founder of the Democracy Policy Network— a policy organization focused on raising up ideas that deepen democracy— and co-director—with Rebecca Davis— of the film Join or Die.43% of Americans are part of zero organizations, and another 20% are only part of one organization. So we're talking about two-thirds of the country that are not part of anything. So they don't know how to run a meeting. They don't know how to do an invitation. They don't know how to deal with tension between neighbors. They don't know how to plan something together in public.Pete DavisThe real basic, atomic-level skills that eventually flourish into hardcore political action often start with softer civic organizing.Pete DavisScott Sklar is Energy Director of George Washington University's Environment & Energy Management Institute and Director of GW's Solar Institute. Mr. Sklar is an expert on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable infrastructure, and runs The Stella Group, Ltd., a clean energy technology optimization and strategic policy firm.White [roofing] is preferable, but even the lightest gray or lightest brown reflects out. We need building codes to do this, we need community activists to do this, we need to train roofers and builders to do this, and we need to create a sort of social compact that [recognizes] this is very easy to do. And so with this and things like tree canopy we can reduce the heat on the ground, which will save lives, make people healthier, and use less energy.Scott SklarThe obvious 800-lb gorilla in the room is the contradiction, where corporations in energy arenas make more money selling waste (by the overuse of energy) and consumers save money by the efficient use of energy. So there's a dead-on conflict between the two interests, and guess who has the most power in the country over government and media. So what Scott is saying is, the more you realize what you personally can save—quite apart from what your community and world can save— the more powerful you have to become.Ralph NaderIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantis1. Capping off a campaign defined by underhanded tricks and legal brute force by the corrupt right-wing establishment, Guatemalan presidential candidate Bernardo Arevalo triumphed on Sunday – winning the presidential election in a landslide, with nearly 60% of the vote. However, even with this victory in hand, the road ahead remains perilous. As renowned investigative journalist Allan Nairn noted just before the election, “Arévalo…won't be due to be sworn in until January 14, 2024, and…members [of the corrupt ruling clique known as El Pacto] have made it clear that they will do what's needed to prevent that.”2. Ecuador also held elections on Sunday, including the first round of their presidential contest. Moving to the runoff are Luisa Gonzalez, a left-wing leader backed by Ecuador's former president Rafael Correa and Daniel Noboa, a businessman and scion of a powerful family of banana tycoons, per AP. Yet, looming larger than either candidate is the specter of political violence directed at the left. Presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was assassinated earlier this month, as was a local leftist politician, and a third survived an attempt on his life. One can only hope for a runoff free of bloodshed.3. In that same election, the Guardian reports Ecuadorans passed a referendum to “halt the development of all new oilwells in the Yasuní national park in the Amazon, one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet.” The article goes on to state “In a second referendum, citizens in Quito also voted to block gold mining in the Chocó Andino, a sensitive highland biosphere near the capital city.”4. The Hollywood Reporter has a new story out concerning a federal court ruling that art created by AI is not eligible for copyright protection. This tremendous victory for creative workers puts up a major roadblock for Hollywood studios who have been unsubtly hinting that they will use AI-generated work to bypass writers, actors, and more. Hopefully, this ruling will convince the studios to return to the negotiating table and hammer out a fair deal to end the entertainment industry strikes.5. A report in The Intercept traces how Norfolk Southern successfully lobbied to weaken a rail regulation bill following the East Palestine disaster. As the author put it in a tweet: “April: Norfolk Southern sends lobbyists to Congress. May: A committee that lobbyists met with weakens the bipartisan rail safety bill. June + July: Norfolk Southern gives thousands to Republican members on that exact committee. Welcome to Washington!”6. From Truthout: In 2021, activists in New Jersey spearheaded a push to ban ICE contracts with private prisons – and got a bill signed into law. Yet, now the Biden administration is backing a challenge to this law led by private prison megacorporation CoreCivic. Back in 2021, Biden stated unequivocally “There should be no private prisons, period, none, period…They should not exist. And we are working to close all of them.” Another promise broken.7. Elon Musk has 153 million followers on Twitter – or as he has redubbed it, X – yet, how many of those are real? Mashable's Matt Binder examined the data and found some startling results. “[over] 42% of Musk's followers have 0 followers on their own account, [more than] 72% have less than 10 followers, [and over] 40 percent of Musk's followers have 0 posts.” While some of these accounts could simply be inactive, this data suggests many of these accounts are bots being used to artificially inflate Musk's follower count.8. The Daily Beast reports that Van Jones, the former activist and CNN commentator, has been forced out of his leadership role at the nonprofit Dream.org, two years after the group received a $100 million donation from Jeff Bezos. A subsidiary of Dream.org, Green For All, also received a three year, $10 million grant in 2020. The article quotes “several ex-employees” who allege “The group tore through that money with little to show for it.” This story shines a light on corruption in activist spaces and gives a window into the non-profit industrial complex run amok.9. Last year, San Francisco voters ousted progressive, reform prosecutor Chesa Boudin, in a recall brought after sustained attacks by conservatives and establishment liberals. Boudin was replaced by more traditional, ‘tough on crime' prosecutor Brooke Jenkins. Yet, a year on and MSNBC reports that violent crime has actually increased in the Golden City compared to Boudin's tenure. While this will come as a surprise to some, it is arguably more shocking that anyone could think going back to the old, failed model of law enforcement would yield new results. That is after all the very definition of insanity. Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

More time off for the #UFC means more time on for the MMA Depressed-us. Each year, when the world's largest #MMA promotion takes a little time away from their breakneck schedule for the holidays, we like to take a little break from our own schedule of watching the best of the worst fights we can find. Instead, we like to take this time to remember that there's so much more to life than just bagging on bad fights. There are lots of bad movies starring fighters that we can make fun of too. Few men have provided more joy in that arena than a former multiple-time UFC champion and MMA legend: Randy 'The Natural' Couture. Starting his film career out with respectable projects like 'Redbelt' and 'The Expendables' Franchise, #Couture has quickly made the seemingly fulltime move to direct-to-video, Z-level action movies. We've pulled up one of his latest gems, 'Antidote'(2018), co-starring (occasionally featuring) his wife, Mindy Robinson, and with a whole heaping portion of Chuck Zito on the side. If you're on the fence on this one, check out the 2:08 trailer here: https://youtu.be/7QlfPLklyyQ and read the movie synopsis which is as follows: Dispatched to a village plagued by a deadly disease, an altruistic doctor, Anna (Natali Yura) and her fiancé, Manuel (Rafael de la Fuente) work tirelessly to relieve the suffering of the villagers. They soon come to learn that the villagers believe the 'White Witch' brought the deadly disease. To save themselves and the village, Anna and Manuel are forced to team up with Victor (Randy Couture, THE EXPENDABLES 3) a cocky treasure hunter, who only wants to find the 'Lost City of Gold'. The trio realize that the White Witch and the Golden City are viciously interconnected and that they must join forces to uncover the Mayan legend of the White Witch to have any hope of surviving. Also starring Chuck Zito, Wil Travel (“Jessica Jones”) and Mindy Robinson (aka: Mrs. Randy Couture). Episode 150! "Not an apocalypse...something far more interesting." André Lima Araújo and Brian Michael Bendis celebrate our 150th episode by providing an immensely eclectic conversation discussing their new all-ages sci-fi adventure saga, Phenomena: The Golden City of Eyes. These two creators are two great tastes that taste great together despite their frequently contradictory points of view. As you'll hear, Araújo and Bendis see the world quite differently, but their opposing sensibilities unleash something utterly unique through the collaborative process. Phenomena: The Golden City of Eyes is the first part of a trilogy published by Abrams ComicArts. It's a rollicking adventure set in a future where our world has...changed. Three wanderers (Bolden, Spike, and Matilde) stumble into each other and reluctantly form a bond while attempting to unravel the mystery of the titular city. Bendis provides a bubbly, naturalistic voice to Araújo's stark yet hyper-realized illustration. You've probably experienced numerous comics from both parties, but we promise you've never seen anything from either of them like Phenomena. The comic is a heap of contradictions: joyous yet harrowing, fluffy but deadly serious. At the center, Araújo and Bendis suggest an urgent reckoning with storytelling, an art form we too often take for granted. Phenomena: The Golden City of Eyes hits book shelves everywhere on 9/13. All you have to do is turn the cover. Panel one will ensnare your attention. Keep up to date on all things Brian Michael Bendis by subscribing to his Substack. You can also track him down via Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. Follow André Lima Araújo through his Website, Twitter, and Instagram. 150 episodes. Kathleen opens the show introducing Ron White's French Bulldog Mustard to the Pubcast, drinking a Full Nelson Virginia Pale Ale made by Blue Mountain Brewery that she bought on her recent tour of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello home outside of Charlottesville, VA (which she loved.) She's also thrilled that her favorite Fantasy Football quarterback Tom Brady has come out of retirement, and she's already planning her 2022 Draft. “GOOD BAD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Utz Heluva Good Buttermilk Ranch Wavy Potato chips, which she absolutely loves and threatens to eat the entire bag. She moves on to taste the newly released Hidden Valley Spicy Ranch Seasoning, which she deems a firm “NO” because it's too spicy but loves the original flavor. She finishes her tasting with Brianna's Chipotle Ranch Dressing, which she really likes because of the smoke and spice.QUEEN'S COURT: Kathleen reports that Queen Dolly has requested to remove herself from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ballot because she doesn't think she's “earned that right.” Tanya Tucker is out on the road touring, and Cher has announced on Twitter that she's been having “personal issues” but hasn't gone into specific detail. “HOLY SHIT THEY FOUND IT”: Kathleen is amazed to read about the discovery of the USS Atlanta shipwreck in Lake Superior after 130 years, and archaeologists have unearthed the lost “Golden City” of Aten in Egypt.THE HIDDEN VALLEY RANCH DIAMOND: As a true lover of Ranch dressing, Kathleen is thrilled to read a press release announcing that Hidden Valley has created a 2 carat round brilliant cut diamond and auctioned it off for more than $12K on eBay. The “HVR Diamond” was expertly created by a professional diamond maker in a lab by heating Hidden Valley Ranch Seasoning to 2,500 degrees, and then crushing the output beneath 400 tons of pressure, taking five months total to create. CAMEL KILLS MEN AT TENNESSEE PETTING ZOO: Kathleen reads an article announcing that 2 men were killed in early March by a ranging camel that had escaped from the Shirley Farms Petting Zoo outside of Memphis. THE HEAVIEST DRINKERS IN THE ANIMAL KINGDOM: Kathleen laughs out loud at the findings from a new study, awarding the title of the heaviest drinkers in the animal kingdom to the tiny hamsters. Psychologists at the University of Alaska Anchorage have studied alcohol consumption in hamsters, noting that they regularly down 18 grams per kilogram of body weight a day, the alcoholic equivalent of a human drinking a liter and a half of 190-proof Everclear. RARE WOLVERINE SIGHTING: Kathleen is excited to read about a recent sighting of a wolverine in Yellowstone National Park. There have been 8 confirmed sightings in the park over the past 43 years, and the “elusive” animal has since been fitted with a GPS collar.GIANT SPIDERS FORECASTED TO DROP FROM SKY: Kathleen is horrified to read an announcement forecasting that millions of Joro spiders are expected to begin “ballooning” up and down the US East Coast as early as May. Researchers have determined that the spiders can tolerate cold weather but are harmless to humans as their fangs are too small to break human skin.LEGEND OF THE 9-TAILED FOX: Kathleen reads that an ancient Japanese “killing stone” has cracked open, and is said to contain an evil demon known as the “9-Tailed Fox.” According to local folklore, the volcanic rock held the evil spirit of a 9-tailed fox who took the form of a beautiful woman. She became involved in a plot to overthrow Emperor Toba, who ruled from 1107 to 1123.WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK: Kathleen recommends watching “The Gilded Age” on HBO Max, which she's watched with Ron White, and also “Inventing Anna” on Netflix.
