Blood: The Last Vampire (2009), Kingdom: Ashin of the North

Our team seems to really like the projects that are coming out of South Korea. They have really nailed some great television lately, and we're excited for all of it. One of the projects was a zombie series titled Kingdom. It such a unique take on the zombie genre, that sometimes can feel played out at this point. For today's episode, we're talking about a Ashin of the North, which serves as a prequel to the series, in the form of a film. "Kingdom: Ashin of the North explores the backstory of Ashin, the mysterious heir of the Northern Seongjeoyain tribe village, and the origin of the resurrection plant that triggered an unprecedented cascade of tragic events that swept through the Kingdom of Joseon." At the end of the second season of Kingdom we are introduced to a female character, whom up to that point had not been introduced. This is her story. This is the telling of what happened to her as a child, and how she got thrown into this universe. This movie focuses on the woman that we see at the end of the second season of Kingdom and is the prequel (not a continuation) to the Kingdom series.  This movie gives the full backstory, and more importantly, the motivation for Ashin to start a zombie apocalypse.  This movie is riveting, the cinematography is spectacular, and the plot is completely believable.

Variously called a prequel, or sidequel, to Netflix's hit zombie show Kingdom, Ashin of the North is a feature length special episode that expands on the series' story and mythology. It's also much more than a zombie thriller, touching on elements of revenge and tragedy. Last week, Netflix debuted “part 1” of Masters of the Universe: Revelation and all the angry fanboys collectively lost their minds. How dare Kevin Smith focus on a guuuurl in their He-man cartoon? How dare they attempt to inject character arcs, world progression, and a narrative that might actually (but didn't really) have some kind of stakes?It was a WHITE hot fury that burned quickly. Vickey and Alisa say no. 28:55: Mara argues that Do Min Joon is not a perfect character and is in fact deeply flawed. “He spent 400 years on earth not getting close to anyone.” Melanie and Katherine agree. 32:00 Melanie kicks off a fangirl freakout over Jun Ji-hyun's amazing performance in this star-making role. 42:35: We discuss the parallels between a scandal in the drama and a rumored real-life scandal in Jun Ji-hyun's marriage and what it says about the status of women in real life. 46:04: Why oh why do so many Kdramas have the leads meet when the female lead is a child?
