Send us a textThe Inimitable Pinky Agnew has been top of the Showy Ovarian pods ever since it was recorded as the first ever episode back in 2021. Her charm, wit, warmth and sparkle have entertained over 700 of you, so whilst Penny was performing The Tempestuous in Wellington for a month (which runs til December 1st), she decided to drop into Pinky's newly downsized pad to catch up with our Queen of the Downloads. Pinky discussed the delights of embracing 70, celebrancy, loving her grey power, crazy running with grandchildren, her joy of joining of the empowering Toitū Te Tiriti Hikoi to parliament, and about the release of her new book: This is Farewell: Readings and Meditations on Death and Dying. They also discussed some deeply challenging recent events involving assault, mental health and dementia, but despite these confronting times her absolute reveling in what it is to be human and joyous will always shine through. Put on your flower crowns and don your skinniest jeans and join us at the center of the Millennial universe: Coachella 2007! Adam & Becca meet the personification of the turn of the century hipster entrepreneur, Dov Charney. Sitting atop a pile of v-neck t-shirts ethically made in the USA, Charney was somewhat of a renegade business oddity on wall-street. But for the 20-something dreamers that clamored for the brand's clothing, he was a captivating revolutionary. Their devotion, along with a bevy of young corporate employees, easily exploited under the guise of “a greater purpose,” allowed American Apparel to rapidly expand and IPO in 2007. The stores were everywhere you wanted to be… until they weren't. Eventually, abuse allegations coupled with financial mismanagement threatened Charney's reign as king of t-shirt mountain. With the walls closing in on him, he spiraled out of control… taking the company he founded with him. To kick off our brand new 2nd Unit series exploring films and properties lost in Development Hell, Joe uses the release of Coheed & Cambria's latest album as an excuse to talk about the lost film adaptation of their long-running sci-fi epic, The Amory Wars. What was supposed to be a major feature produced by Mark Wahlberg turned into a lot of nothing despite a built-in audience. We try to get a grasp on why this project didn't come to fruition by delving into the finer details of the world built by Claudio Sanchez through songs and comics. Joe builds on material from the albums and graphic novels, as well as interviews with Claudio and narrative breakdowns from the sadly-defunct Cobalt & Calcium fan community, while Jack tries his best to follow along and make Star Trek and Grant Morrison jokes to cling to his sanity. Which is impressive, considering he's a time traveler from 1967 whose only musical touchstones are apparently Led Zeppelin and Herb Albert & The Tijuana Brass. Pull up your Ten Speed and man your own jackhammer as we dive head-first into the well and unknowing, and Joe chuckles to himself as Jack tries to figure out what any of that means. We're officially back for SEASON 2! We open things up by taking a fortunately short trip to Textopolis to break down The Emoji Movie (2017), the only animated children's film to ever win Worst Picture at the Razzie Awards. While we do have some ideas for how to fix this mess, we decided to try something different for our season premiere and examine Jack's writing tool of choice, the Hero's Journey, and how The Emoji Movie ignores the parts of the Journey it actually does engage with. Listen as we rant about how deeply this movie misunderstands basic technology, Jack learns where emojis even come from, Joe gushes about how great Jason Mantzoukas is, and we all become overly concerned with Jack's foot hygiene and overall bathroom cleanliness. Women of color have always been at the forefront of social change, and the fight for worker protections in Long Beach is no different—especially when the City Council refused to support them. This is the story of the time hotel workers took on the city's powerful hoteliers and political establishment... and won. From 20-year-old Renaissance Hotel worker Claudia Sanchez who suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and fell into a coma after working a 14-hour shift to the badass women who took their fight to TIME Magazine and the ballot box, our hosts are joined by local organizer Marlene Montañez who recounts the struggle to pass labor protections in the form of Measure WW in 2018.Follow Long Beach Chisme on IG and TikTok @lbchisme and on Twitter at @LongBeachChisme.
