If you haven't heard of Nirvanna The Band The Show then you're doing yourself a disservice. I'm actually pretty shocked that both Jon and Scott aren't more familiar with it. Tracking down the Viceland episodes seems to be a bit of a trick these days but there is still a delightful fansite that has thoughtfully preserved the Nirvanna The Band webseries episodes for your enjoyment. If you have a chance to check out Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie in theaters I'm fairly sure you won't be disappointed. However, it was produced by Crave so if you have that service I'm sure you'll find it on streaming soon enough. While you're at it you should probably check out The Dirties, Operation: Avalanche and BlackBerry too. Since everything is fine in the world we spend some time talking about how CEOs eat their hamburgers. If you haven't seen the footage I think it's somehow both more and less cringe than you think it is. On first watch I thought it wasn't so bad, but then I watched it again and decided that the McDonald's CEO might not even be an actual human being. We talk about other stuff too. What jobs are going to be stolen by artificial intelligence, UFC BMF Champion Charles Oliveira and his entire leg-sleeve Pokemon tattoo, the Masters of the Universe movie trailer and Scott's dislike of medical dramas. Anyways, we spend this episode of Garbage Time talking about how much the sports writers for the Montreal Gazette kind of suck. That leads us towards the death of print media and how much we miss Vice Magazine. Not sure how we go from there to curling and ultra marathons but you know what? We do. If you would like to show your support and head over to Patreon and subscribe at the 9ES Deluxe tier to listen to this and all past episodes of Garbage Time that would be appreciated. This week, I'm talking with Molly Patrick of Clean Food Dirty Girl and trust me, you're going to love her.Molly has never eaten meat. Not one bite. She grew up in a teepee in New Mexico while her parents' hand-built their home, and today she lives on Maui leading a global community of over 280,000 "Dirties." Her approach? Warm, hilarious, and sprinkled with just the right amount of swearing. We get into:Why vegan and whole food plant-based aren't the same thingWhat "batch block" is and the one small step to finally break free from itHow growing up off-grid shaped her relationship with foodThe surprising muscle sobriety and plant-based eating shareWhat I loved most about this conversation? Molly doesn't care if you're perfect. She cares if you're still showing up.If you've ever felt like you need to get it right to start, this episode is your permission slip to just begin.Find all of Molly's links in the show notes. Mindframes Show Notes Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie (2026) Directed by: Matt Johnson Starring: Matt Johnson, Jay McCarrol Written by: Matt Johnson & Jay McCarrol Genre: Comedy / Time Travel / Meta Runtime: Approx. 100 minutes IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt (insert final ID) Episode Summary In this mini-episode of Mindframes, Michael and Dave review Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie, the long-awaited feature adaptation of the cult Canadian web series. When Matt and Jay's plan to finally book a show at Toronto's Rivoli goes catastrophically wrong, they accidentally travel back to 2008 — launching a chaotic, meta, Back-to-the-Future-inflected adventure through friendship, ego, and DIY filmmaking. Unlike our usual episodes, this discussion does not center on a formal thematic breakdown. Instead, we explore how Matt Johnson's latest film fits into his body of work (including BlackBerry, The Dirties, and Operation Avalanche), why this may be his most overtly comedic film, and how its sincerity sets it apart from darker contemporary comedies. We also discuss: The film's guerrilla filmmaking style The surprising twist that left audiences gasping The heavy (and self-aware) homage to Back to the Future Why this movie feels like an "anti-despair" comedy Both hosts ultimately give the film a strong recommendation. Thematic Reflection (Mini Version) Though this is not a full thematic episode, a through-line naturally emerges in the discussion: In a cultural moment saturated with irony and cynical humor, Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie chooses sincerity. Its characters are delusional and self-important, but they are also fundamentally kind — and that kindness becomes the emotional anchor of the film. The result is a comedy that feels both absurd and restorative. On this week's Richard Crouse Show: It's hard to remember now, but there was a time when we were not tethered to our smart phones. A new film, “BlackBerry,” starring Jay Baruchel and Matt Johnson, and now playing in theatres, vividly recreates the scrappy story of friendship, betrayal and hubris that began our obsession with our phones. Today, we going to focus on that story, courtesy of the film BlackBerry, which opens in theatres on May 12. There was a time when the Canadian made, odd little phone, with a QWERTY keyboard, encrypted messaging and low data cost, was a status symbol, used by some of the world' most powerful people. In the hands of everyone from President Barack Obama and Justin Timberlake to Katy Perry and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, the phones helped the world communicate in a whole new way. They were the original smart phones, which makes their Canadian creators Mike Lazaridis and Doug Fregin, visionaries, the men who gave us the future. Recently I sat down with BlackBerry co-writer, co-star and director Matt Johnson, and Jay Baruchel who stars as the awkward genius behind the BlackBerry tech, Mike Lazaridis. Matt is the director of The Dirties, which won Best Narrative Feature at the Slamdance Film Festival, Operation Avalanche, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and mockumentary television series Nirvanna the Band the Show. You know Jay from his voice role as Hiccup Haddock in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, and for roles in Knocked Up, Tropic Thunder, The Trotsky, Fanboys, She's Out of My League, Goon, This Is the End, and the action-fantasy film The Sorcerer's Apprentice. You can also see him as the host of We're All Gonna Die (Even Jay Baruchel) on Crave. BlackBerry is the story of the company Research in Motion, Jim Balsillie, the hotheaded businessman, played by Glenn Howerton, who was there for the rise and fall of the iconic company. “BlackBerry” isn't just a business story or the story of innovation. Instead, it is an underdog tale that emphasizes the human foibles that led to RIM's downfall, not just the financial ones. We began the interview with the idea of talking about the film, but were soon sidetracked by a discussion inspired by the lessons learned from the film, about what it means to be Canadian, why we don't celebrate our own stories and much more. Stay tuned, it often doesn't sound like an interview as much as a conversation we might have had over a drink or two. Like the movie we were supposed to concentrate on, before the conversation took a few left turns, the interview is passionate, patriotic, funny and not quite what you might expect.
Inspired by Matthew Miller and Matt Johnson's THE DIRTIES, teenage angst, and a certainty that last thing people remember about high school is lesson plan, Ethan Eng's hurls itself head first into everything else that makes high school memorable in his award winning debut film, THERAPY DOGS. Ethan and his best friend Justin are students trying to make sense of their high school existence. In what will be the last chapter of their teenage lives and the beginning of adulthood and beyond, they decide to make the ultimate senior video in the search for answers. Exploring teenage suburbia in a no-brakes adventure, questions arise whether there's more to their lives than simply growing up. Director, writer and lead actor Ethan Eng joins us for a conversation on the remarkably accomplished debut film that masterfully blends together documentary, narrative, skater punk and high school “senior project” elements to create something wholly unique and compelling, as well as how his collaboration with fellow lead actor and producer Justin Morrice and enlisting Matthew Miller and Matt Johnson (The Dirties, Operation Avalanche) to be THERAPY DOGS executive producers.
