Picture the scene: It's 1983 on the East side of town in Zion, Illinois! You're hanging out at your buddy Russ Spice's house. Playing Judas Priest songs on your Harmony guitars and watching “The Song Remains The Same” on MTV. Instead of James Dean in “Rebel Without A Cause”, our movie idol is Sean Penn as Jeff Spicoli (is it still playing at the Dunes?). Maybe later we'll ride our bikes down to the lake and swim in the heated shadow of the nuclear power plant and pray that we don't grow up to be toxic avenging freaks. And then, hopefully, we can scrape enough pot seeds together so we can smoke ‘em through a beer can and get a cheap buzz going — after which, we'll convince ourselves we have the munchies and try to get Curt to spend his News-Sun paper route money on lunch at Pizza House. It was a glorious time…

Steph Paynes & Lez ZeppelinSteph Paynes is the visionary guitarist and founder of Lez Zeppelin, the all-female powerhouse that has redefined what a tribute band can be. More than just a faithful recreation, Lez Zeppelin brings the spirit, swagger, and intensity of Led Zeppelin's music into a new light, guided by Paynes' fiery guitar work and her dedication to channeling the emotional risk and raw energy of Jimmy Page's playing. Since its inception, the project has drawn praise worldwide — even earning acknowledgement from Page himself. As a guitarist, Paynes is known for her technical mastery, tonal precision, and fearless improvisation. She has spent years studying the intricacies of Zeppelin's catalog, not to mimic but to interpret, embracing the unpredictability and dynamic shifts that made the originals so compelling. Her performances often blur the line between homage and reinvention, breathing new vitality into riffs and solos that remain timeless while bearing her own unmistakable touch. With Lez Zeppelin, Paynes has overseen ambitious projects that go beyond the stage. Their debut album, produced by legendary engineer Eddie Kramer, captured the raw spirit of Zeppelin while showcasing the band's own unique voice. Later, the group recreated Led Zeppelin I using the same vintage equipment and recording methods as the original sessions — a daring undertaking that proved their commitment to authenticity and artistry. These ventures set Lez Zeppelin apart as a band that respects tradition while pushing boundaries.Touring has always been at the heart of Paynes' mission with Lez Zeppelin. The band's live shows are known for their thunderous energy, dynamic setlists, and the sense of surrender Steph describes as essential to the music. Audiences around the globe have experienced their electric presence, from major festivals to historic theaters. In 2025, the band embarks on a special tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of Physical Graffiti, performing the album in its entirety alongside other Zeppelin classics, ensuring fans old and new can immerse themselves in a once-in-a-lifetime experience.Steph Paynes continues to prove that Lez Zeppelin is more than a tribute — it is a living, breathing incarnation of rock's most enduring legacy. Through her artistry, leadership, and dedication, she keeps the music alive not just as nostalgia but as a vital, evolving force. Whether on record or on stage, Paynes and Lez Zeppelin deliver performances that honor the past while igniting the present, reminding audiences why Led Zeppelin's music — and her interpretation of it — will always matter.https://lezzeppelin.com/
For those who haven't heard the announcement I posted, songs from this point on will sometimes be split among multiple episodes, so this is the first part of a two-episode look at the song “Dazed and Confused” by Led Zeppelin, although this episode doesn’t get as far as Led Zeppelin’s formation, and is mostly about the intertwining session careers of John Paul Jones and (especially) Jimmy Page. Click the full post to read liner notes, links to more information, and a transcript of the episode. Patreon backers also have a thirty-five minute bonus episode available, on “Boom-Bang-a-Bang” by Lulu. Tilt Araiza has assisted invaluably by editing, and will hopefully be doing so from now on. The Jews have been wandering in exile for the last 2000 years. There is a mystical clue for our diaspora contained in Parshat Masei. In 1972, Rabbi Yaakov Asher Sinclair opened SARM Studios the first 24-track recording studio in Europe where Queen mixed “Bohemian Rhapsody”. His music publishing company, Druidcrest Music published the music for The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1973) and as a record producer, he co-produced the quadruple-platinum debut album by American band “Foreigner” (1976). American Top ten singles from this album included, “Feels Like The First Time”, “Cold as Ice” and “Long, Long Way from Home”. Other production work included “The Enid – In the Region of the Summer Stars”, “The Curves”, and “Nutz” as well as singles based on The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy with Douglas Adams and Richard O'Brien. Other artists who used SARM included: ABC, Alison Moyet, Art of Noise, Brian May, The Buggles, The Clash, Dina Carroll, Dollar, Flintlock, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, It Bites, Malcolm McLaren, Nik Kershaw, Propaganda, Rush, Rik Mayall, Stephen Duffy, and Yes. In 1987, he settled in Jerusalem to immerse himself in the study of Torah. His two Torah books The Color of Heaven, on the weekly Torah portion, and Seasons of the Moon met with great critical acclaim. Seasons of the Moon, a unique fine-art black-and-white photography book combining poetry and Torah essays, has now sold out and is much sought as a collector's item fetching up to $250 for a mint copy. He is much in demand as an inspirational speaker both in Israel, Great Britain and the United States. He was Plenary Keynote Speaker at the Agudas Yisrael Convention, and Keynote Speaker at Project Inspire in 2018. Rabbi Sinclair lectures in Talmud and Jewish Philosophy at Ohr Somayach/Tannenbaum College of Judaic studies in Jerusalem and is a senior staff writer of the Torah internet publications Ohrnet and Torah Weekly. His articles have been published in The Jewish Observer, American Jewish Spirit, AJOP Newsletter, Zurich's Die Jüdische Zeitung, South African Jewish Report and many others. Rabbi Sinclair was born in London, and lives with his family in Jerusalem. He was educated at St. Anthony's Preparatory School in Hampstead, Clifton College, and Bristol University. Send us a textYour intrepid FYF co-hosts Saint and Jim both sing lead in rock bands. As such, they're uniquely poised to make the case that — despite fan perception — the vocalist is NOT the most important person in the band. Regardless, the voice of any given group is still one of its most identifiable aspects. So while some bands play literal musical chairs with the folks manning the instruments, the singer's spot is typically less flexible. Even so, countless bands have swapped in a new singer mid-stream due to deaths, departures, or inter-band tensions. On this edition of FYF, the boys do a deep dive into bands that have replaced their frontmen, and the varying degrees of success (or failure) they've had in the wake of the personnel swap.
I've pretty much given up on examining current affairs and conspiracy issues as I honestly don't feel any of it can be fixed. Witness the never-ending onslaught of shows, podcasts, videos, bulletins, shorts, reporting every day on all the madness going on. It could literally drive you insane if you tried to get personally involved in every one. We CAN stem the tide and minimise suffering, and that is what we must seek to do with our time and resources. I'm certainly not advocating sitting back and doing nothing. But ultimately I feel we must accept that, however it happened, we find ourselves in a realm constructed to facilitate suffering. It was set up and coded that way, and from the point of view of whatever force created it, it's working PERFECTLY.*To e-mail on any matter:markdevlin2022@prrotonmail.comDetails of all upcoming events:www.djmarkdevlin.com/events/Become one of my Patreon supporters and get access to exclusive content here:https://www.patreon.com/user?u=113137448Subscribe to my Substack page here:https://markdevlinuk.substack.com/To support my output through Buy Me A Coffee:https://buymeacoffee.com/markdevlinTo support me via a Paypal.com donation, find me at paypal.com under the e-mail address markdevlinuk@gmail.com

Choral groups were among the hardest-hit and slowest to rebound from the pandemic. Two of the region's enduring choirs are still finding their footing both artistically and in the wider public.Today, we hear from the choirs' two artistic directors—Kyle Ritter of Asheville Symphony Chorus and Emily Floyd of Asheville Youth Choirs. They're performing together April 27 at First Baptist Church. We talk with the choral directors about the challenges of surviving and rebounding from the pandemic. Kyle goes into detail about his choir's relationship to the Asheville Symphony Orchestra and building an identity of its own. Emily talks about balancing the sacred and the secular. Both weigh in on marketing choral music to today's distracted public, adapting pop music into choral music and the future of the world's oldest art form. Today on Rock Docs we discuss "The Song Remains the Same", a 1976 film about Led Zeppelin directed by Peter Clifton and Joe Massot. For those who haven't seen the film, or whose memory of seeing it is lost in a drug-addled haze (as it was meant to be seen), the movie starts with LZ manager Peter Grant dressed as a 1930s gangster shooting a Nazi werewolf and it just gets weirder from there. This is nominally a concert film (is it even a rock doc at all?) shot during the band's 1973 shows at Madison Square Garden, but it also includes footage shot on a soundstage in England made up to look like MSG, as well as fantasy sequences featuring each of the band's members. Our guest, and the man who selected this cinematic masterpiece for us to review, is comedian and actor Cam Herdt. Rebekah Todd is a seasoned songwriter and performer who moved from Wilmington to Asheville two years ago. On Aug. 22, she posted a video to social media talking about unwanted communication from an unnamed festival promoter, the blame he placed on her for the festival's cancellation and the avalanche of backlash that came her way. Hundreds of people commented on and shared it.Even before this episode, Rebekah made social media posts going back to March touching on other experiences she had with men in positions of power. Misogyny in the music industry is a difficult topic. Rarely do men address it, nor does the music press. But an Asheville music festival called Women to the Front happens Sept. 17. Despite 4am emergency vet trips and audio that may or may not be recording, the girls manage to pull it together for 5x13 ‘The Song Remains The Same'. In a podcast first, Jamie is mad that Supernatural answered a question in a timely fashion (robbing her of a classic Psychic Jamie Moment), the Sera Gamble Longcon develops a fun new twist, and Google teaches the girls about religion. Here's the link to our end of Kripke Era survey! Heaven (and in this case, specifically Michael) has an agenda. The long-scheduled apocalypse is proceeding apace, but how does one convince one's recalcitrant vessel to play along? Well, a nice little demonstration of power, combined with a charmingly delivered (I'm sure Michael thought he was ever so polite about it) reminder that there's no such thing as Free Will and everything in the history of the universe had been leading them to that moment where Dean will say yes and accept his fate. Kinda horrifying, when you think about it in those terms alongside Dean's ultimate confrontation against this in s15. And even worse when you think about 15.20, where it finally played out that way, with the rest of the entire story rendered irrelevant in 40 minutes. Good times... >.> But this is where Dean plants his free will flag, which will become his final major plot arc of the entire series-- wrestling with the notion that none of it may have ever been real at all. So this is a big one. Plus, John and Mary in the 70′s, which is wild now that we're seeing The Winchesters. LINKS! In this episode, we take on Led Zeppelin's feature film and live album The Song Remains The Same. What started out as an attempt to document Led Zep's concerts at Madison Square Garden in 1973 became a film that featured fantasy sequences, backstage drama, and yes, the songs and music that propelled Led Zeppelin to become one of the biggest bands of all-time.And while Zeppelin manager Peter Grant said "It was the most expensive home movie ever made," it's a time capsule that could only have been made in the 1970s. We talked through all the scenes and all the songs -- It was a Whole Lotta Fun.Hosted by Chris Karam and Brad Page(NOTE: This conversation originally appeared in 2021 on an episode of Mr. K's Super Show)
