In this episode of Insight Is Capital, host Pierre Daillie sits down with David Stonehouse, Interim CIO and Head of North American Specialty Investments at AGF Investments, for a wide-ranging but grounded discussion on what lies ahead for investors as the cycle matures.Stonehouse frames 2026 as a constructive but narrower environment—one supported by global monetary easing, rising fiscal stimulus, and resilient earnings growth, yet constrained by elevated valuations, softer labor markets, and geopolitical uncertainty. The conversation carefully unpacks how tariffs have shifted from an economic “earthquake” to a lingering aftershock, why inflation fears may be overstated near-term, and how investors can think about regional diversification beyond a heavily concentrated U.S. market.Rather than offering bold predictions, the discussion emphasizes flexibility, balance, and readiness—highlighting why equal-weight equity exposure, selective credit, emerging markets, and a strategic cash buffer may matter more than ever as uncertainty rises but opportunity persists.
The Gales of November is very real on the Great Lakes, known as the “Month of Storms.”Some 550 wrecks lie on the bottom of Lake Superior, at least 200 along Superior's Shipwreck Coast, a treacherous 80-Mile stretch with no safe harbor between Munising and Whitefish Point. On November 10, 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald, a 728 foot freighter went down in a storm described as both blizzard and hurricane taking all 29 crew members to their grave. Made famous by the Gordon Lightfoot song, the wreck has remained a mystery for fifty years. In this episode of the Lake Superior Podcast, Walt Lindala and Frida Waara talk with maritime historian, author and lecturer Fred Stonehouse about that tragic night and what we have learned since her sinking and how her legacy has shaped maritime safety. Key TakeawaysThe Edmund Fitzgerald Sank Fifty Years Ago — But Its Mystery EnduresMaritime historian Fred Stonehouse recounts how the 729-foot freighter Edmund Fitzgerald sank on November 10, 1975, about 15 miles northwest of Whitefish Point. The ship went down without a distress signal, and all 29 crew members were lost—leaving one of the Great Lakes' most haunting mysteries.A Storm Described as Both a Blizzard and a HurricaneThe night the Fitzgerald went down, Lake Superior raged with winds exceeding 75 miles per hour—stronger than a Category 1 hurricane. As Fred explains, the storm “exceeded 75 miles an hour in wind, and a cat one hurricane's only 74.”Hubris and Hard Lessons on the Great Lakes“This was a time when ships had the attitude that they can't sink.”Fred reflects on how the culture of Great Lakes shipping in the 1970s—driven by confidence and schedules—left little room for caution. The Fitzgerald's loss changed that mindset forever, ushering in a new era of safety, respect, and humility toward Lake Superior. The Edmund Fitzgerald at 50: A Tragedy That Changed Everything“The world had changed in that instance when the Fitzgerald disappeared.” The tragedy sparked widespread reforms—from new navigation technology and onboard stress monitoring systems to emergency response protocols. The Ship That Became a Legend“She has sailed from fact into legend of the Great Lakes.”Fred explains how the Edmund Fitzgerald became immortalized through Gordon Lightfoot's ballad, cultural memory, and even merchandise—from ornaments to craft beer. The ship's story transcended history, turning into one of the most iconic Great Lakes legends. An Underwater Graveyard and a Place of ReverenceFred describes the Fitzgerald's final resting place, protected by the Canadian government and closed to divers since 1989. It remains a solemn memorial to the men who perished that night and a reminder of Lake Superior's power.Connect With Us:Lake Superior Podcast Page – https://nplsf.org/podcastFacebook – https://www.facebook.com/NationalParksOfLakeSuperiorFoundationLinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/company/national-parks-of-lake-superior-foundationSponsors:Cafe Imports – Minneapolis-based importers of specialty green coffees since 1993, focused on sustainability. In this powerful first part of our two-part special Both Sides of the Bottle, I'm joined by my cohost for this episode, Ellie Boatman. We sit down with the incredibly open and courageous Sarah Stonehouse who shares her deeply personal journey through alcoholism, just as she celebrates her six-year sobriety anniversary. This episode focuses on the side of the addict and dives into the raw reality of addiction—from the chaos and damage it caused in Sarah's life, to the emotional toll it took on her and her loved ones. She speaks candidly about the guilt, the shame, and the wake-up calls, but also about the incredible support network that helped her find her way out. If you've ever wondered what it's really like to live inside the grip of addiction, or you've watched someone close to you struggle, this conversation offers a brutally honest window into both the pain and the hope that coexist in recovery. Sarah doesn't hold back, and her story is a reminder that healing is messy, personal, and possible.Part 2 of Both Sides of the Bottle will shift the focus to the people on the outside—the family, friends, and loved ones who lived through the experience alongside the individual suffering with the addiction. Together, these two episodes tell the full story of addiction and its ripple effect on everyone involved.About Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a global, community-based fellowship of individuals who share their experiences, strength, and hope to help each other recover from alcoholism. In this NBN interview, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with Toronto author Alice Fitzpatrick about new her mystery, A Dark Death (Stonehouse Publishing, 2025). This female-led literary detective novel has been delighting readers. About A Dark Death: Kate Galway is looking forward to a quiet summer working on her latest novel at her home on Meredith Island. For a place hardly anyone has heard of, her sleepy Welsh island is attracting a lot of visitors, including a conman posing as a psychic and group of archaeology students who believe they've unearthed evidence of a Roman temple. Part-way through the dig, however, the students make an even more startling discovery: a body ritualistically laid out in their trench. While intrigued by the murder, amateur sleuth Kate decides to leave this investigation to the professionals. However, when she learns that both the island mechanic and her university friend's son are prime suspects, she and artist Siobhan Fitzgerald feel they have no choice but to get involved. More about Alice: Alice Fitzpatrick has contributed various short stories to literary magazines and anthologies and has recently retired from teaching in order to devote herself to writing full-time. She is a fearless champion of singing, cats, all things Welsh, and the Oxford comma. Her summers spent with her Welsh family in Pembrokeshire inspired the creation of Meredith Island. The traditional mystery appeals to her keen interest in psychology as she is intrigued by what makes seemingly ordinary people commit murder. This week the boys sit down with their good friend Michael Parashis and talk about: Knob, Bullet, Voyage 31, Stonehouse, Lassen, 18" Trailer, National Parks, Living off the land, North Cascade Washington, Great Bush, Sedona, and much much more.
George Parker, the political editor of the Financial Times assesses the latest developments at Westminster.Following the publication of the Strategic Defence Review, George discusses the recommendations made in the Report with its main author, the Labour peer Lord Robertson, who is a former secretary general of NATO and a former Labour defence secretary and with Penny Mordaunt, the former Conservative defence secretary. Amid mounting concern at Westminster over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, George is joined by Conservative MP Sir Roger Gale and Labour MP Jon Pearce, the chair of Labour Friends of Israel, to discuss the latest. To discuss the results of the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election in Scotland, George brings together Jamie McGuire, who was a Labour councillor until he defected, a few days ago, to Reform UK and Kezia Dugdale, a former leader of the Scottish Labour Party who is now at the Centre for Public Policy at Glasgow University. And, finally, ahead of next week's Spending Review, George speaks to crossbench peer, Lord Macpherson, who was the Permanent Secretary at the Treasury and to Conservative peer and former Cabinet Minister Michael Gove, who is the editor of the Spectator magazine.
Scottish Labour have a new MSP today as Davy Russell won the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election, taking the seat from the SNP. Labour won with 31.6% of the vote with the SNP second on 29.4%, Reform close behind on 26.1% and the Conservatives a distance fourth with just 6% of the vote; this marks rare good news for both Keir Starmer and Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar. Both SNP and Reform will be disappointed not to have won, but Reform have been quick to highlight how close they came, considering how new the party is. Plus, there are signs that Reform took votes away from the incumbent SNP, demonstrating again that Reform can appeal to voters across the political spectrum – what does this mean for next year's Holyrood elections? This comes as Reform reels from the resignation of its chairman Zia Yusuf last night – how much impact will this have on the party? Lucy Dunn was in Scotland for the by-election and joins James Heale, alongside former Reform strategist Gawain Towler. Produced by Patrick Gibbons and Megan McElroy. Hosted on Acast. And in part two, Rachelle Abbott meets the founder of hip hop band Cypress Hill, B-Real, to discuss the band's new album with the London Symphony Orchestra, which was recorded at London's Royal Albert Hall and was inspired by an episode of The Simpsons. It's Farage's big test in Scotland. For years it was a political dead-end for Reform party leader - heckled in Edinburgh, chased from restaurants in Aberdeen, and repeatedly rejected at the ballot box.But in today's Holyrood by-election in Hamilton, Larkhall & Stonehouse, Reform UK is mounting a serious challenge. With Farage back in charge and his candidate Ross Lambie gaining ground in an SNP stronghold, could this be the moment his party makes a breakthrough north of the border? And while the Tories remain locked in internal warfare, we speak to Reform's most senior council leader, Linden Kemkaran, on how the party plans to cut spending with their own version of Elon Musk's DOGE and why she wants to end taxpayer-funded English lessons for migrants.Producer: Georgia Coan and Lilian FawcettSenior Producer: John CadiganPlanning Editor: Venetia RaineyExecutive Producer: Louisa WellsSocial Media Producer: James SimmonsVideo Editor: Will WaltersStudio Operator: Meghan SearleWith assistance from Andy Mackenzie and Ryan Gudge Hosted on Acast. Text us your wine questions, craziest wine experiences, or if you just have a comment for us. . I get to speak with Joanne Pratt and Craig MacMillan, the owners of Stonehouse Vineyard in Lochiel, Ontario. Unless you've read either of my two Sipsters Pocket Guides to 50 Must-Try Ontario Wines, there is little chance that you could have even heard of Stonehouse before. The winery is in a converted barn and the whole property is perched on the top of a beautiful ridge in far eastern Ontario - the first vineyard operating in the area - just before the Quebec border in Glengarry county. If you've ever driven the 401 between Montreal and Toronto or the 417 between Montreal and Ottawa, then you have passed through Glengarry County. Drive away from either of those highways and you'll be in some of the most beautiful farmland in the province, if not the country. Joanne and Craig have really done their homework. They know that making great wine is only one step to a successful winery. They've also been carefully building their brand, creating associations with other cold climate wineries, and encouraging academic research with Concordia University to help literally break ground and pioneer a wine industry in a new region. It was really exciting for me to witness this first hand and I'm so glad that I was able to connect with them when I was in the area this past November. Thank you for continuing to listen to the Sipster's Podcast. I know I haven't done as many episodes this past year as I'd hoped but I am hoping to continue producing more podcasts in 2025. A selection of poems read from the text, "The Mountain Poems of Stonehouse" - translated by Red Pine (Bill Porter) The Zen master, Shiwu 石屋, or Stonehouse (1272–1352) was a Chinese Chan poet and hermit monk who lived during the Yuan Dynasty. He was considered one of the greatest Chinese Buddhist poets and used poetry as his medium of instruction for Dharma. In 1312 at the age of forty he moved to Xiamu Mountain near Huzhou to live as a hermit and it is here that he composed his "Mountain Poems" (Shan-shih), one-hundred and eighty-four verses expounding Dharma and the facets of living in the mountains. Near the end of his life, monks asked him to record what he found of interest on his mountain; Stonehouse delivered to them hundreds of poems and an admonition: "Do not try singing these poems. Only if you sit on them will they do you any good." The text can be purchased here: https://www.amazon.com.au/Mountain-Po... In this episode, we are joined by Jeffrey C. Tuomala, Professor of Law at Liberty University, to examine two landmark U.S. Supreme Court decisions in light of two articles by Ned Stonehouse. Professor Tuomala, with his deep commitment to restoring the moral foundations of law, will offer his legal expertise to comment on Stonehouse's reflections regarding McCollum v. Board of Education and Everson v. Board of Education. These cases addressed the relationship between church and state, religious education, and the issue of secularism in public schools. We explore the deeper issues Stonehouse raised, such as the dangers of secularism in public education, the role of Christian education, and the balance between religious liberty and state control. Professor Tuomala provides a thoughtful legal and moral analysis of how these cases continue to influence contemporary debates about faith, law, and education in America. This conversation is a rich discussion on the intersection of theology, law, and Christian education in the modern world. Listen for a compelling exploration of these pivotal court decisions and their ongoing impact on religious freedom and Christian education. Articles Ned B.
