Hoy terminamos con nuestro breve recorrido por América Latina. Hemos visitado países como Argentina, Chile, Uruguay y Cuba. Hoy estaremos, gracias a la magia de la radio, en Costa Rica, México y Brasil. Como todos estos días, nuestra aproximación a la música de estos países es muy superficial. Nos dejamos infinidad de música y músicos sin citar pero es que nuestra idea no es ser exhaustivos ni especialistas. Como ya sabéis, solamente programamos la música que nos gusta. Y es esta. En el último trago Chavela Vargas, figura latinoamericana de la música ranchera mexicana, paradójicamente nació en Costa Rica, en San Joaquín de Flores, Heredia, hija de Francisco Vargas y Herminia Lizano. Tuvo una infancia difícil: sus padres se divorciaron y se desentendieron de ella, dejándola al cuidado de unos tíos. Chavela Vargas se trasladó a México cuando tenía 17 años y posteriormente adoptó la nacionalidad mexicana. A los treinta se hizo cantante profesional, apadrinada por el compositor y cantante José Alfredo Jiménez, de quien era compañera de parrandas. Cuentan que cuando Jiménez falleció, Chavela acudió a su velatorio, y se desplomó cantando y llorando, borracha. Cuando varias personas intentaron apartarla, la viuda de José Alfredo las detuvo: «Déjenla, que está sufriendo tanto como yo» A finales de los años cincuenta empezó a hacerse conocida en algunos círculos artísticos, en parte gracias a sus actuaciones en Acapulco. Allí actuaba en la sala Champagne Room del restaurante La Perla y, en este lugar, construyó una estrecha amistad con los pintores Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, que la alojaron en su casa. A lo largo de su vida, también tuvo una relación amistosa con Picasso, Pablo Neruda, Carlos Fuentes, , Juan Rulfo, Agustín Lara, Nicolás Guillén y Gabriel García Márquez, con quien, parece ser, cenaba una vez al año en cualquier lugar del mundo donde se encontraran. Su primer álbum fue publicado en 1961 y de ese disco este Niña Isabel. Se puede apreciar en este temprano trabajo que todavía no tenía la voz rota que le haría famosa en el mundo entero ni la amargura que le persiguió durante buena parte de su vida. Los graves problemas producidos por el alcohol en su vida personal la llevaron a retirarse de una carrera artística de gran éxito a finales de los años setenta, y durante años se sumergió en el anonimato. Pero gracias al apoyo de sus numerosos amigos, empezó a superar sus problemas con el alcoholismo y regresó a la escena pública a principios de los años noventa, a través de presentaciones en el mítico teatro-bar "El Hábito", de Coyoacán. En este lugar, se produjo su encuentro con el editor español Manuel Arroyo Stephens, quien junto a Pedro Almodóvar, impulsaron su regreso a España. No volvió a beber en sus últimos veinte años, y se mantuvo fuerte hasta el final. Chavela debió buena parte de la fama de su segundo periodo de actividad artística a su aparición en varias películas de éxito, bien mediante canciones incluidas en ellas, o como actriz. Pedro Almodóvar incluyó canciones interpretadas por ella en varios de sus filmes, como Tacones lejanos (1991) y por otros como “Piensa en mi”, de Agustín Lara que interpretó Luz Casal. Escucharemos la versión original de Chavela Vargas. El 30 de julio de 2012 fue internada en el hospital, por sus problemas crónicos del corazón, pulmones y riñones y el domingo 5 de agosto de 2012 se dio a conocer su fallecimiento a través de su twitter oficial con la siguiente frase: «Silencio, silencio: las amarguras volverán a ser amargas... se ha ido la gran dama Chavela Vargas». Jose Alfredo Jiménez – Ella José Alfredo Jiménez, al que hemos citado anteriormente como el gran valedor de Chavela Vargas, fue un cantante y compositor mexicano que creó una gran cantidad de temas, principalmente rancheras, huapangos y corridos, todos ellos de una calidad y sencillez armónica inigualables. Según cuentan las crónicas, José Alfredo no tenía educación musical de ningún tipo. Sin embargo, se cree que compuso más de un millar de canciones; la mayoría de ellas tienen arreglos de Rubén Fuentes, al que José Alfredo simplemente le silbaba la melodía y él la transcribía al pentagrama. Y ahora, a bordo de nuestra alfombra voladora y gracias a la magia de la radio, nos vamos a Brasil!!! Tico-tico-Charlie Parker Que genial versión del clásico Tico Tico hace Charlie Parker en este corte. Pero bueno, hablar de Brasil es hablar música en estado puro y, sobre todo de bossa nova. João Gilberto Prado Pereira de Oliveira, o sea, Joao Gilberto, músico y cantante brasileño, junto a Antônio Carlos Jobim son considerados por todos como los creadores del género brasileño por excelencia: la bossa-nova. Joao Gilberto aprendió a tocar la guitarra de manera autodidacta. En el año 1950, emigró a la ciudad de Río de Janeiro, donde tuvo algún éxito cantando en la banda Garotos da Lua. Después de ser expulsado de la banda por rebeldía, pasó algunos años sin trabajo, pero con la idea pertinaz de crear una nueva forma de expresión musical con la guitarra. Su esfuerzo finalmente dio resultado tras conocer a Tom Jobim ?pianista y compositor con educación clásica que también era un entusiasta del jazz estadounidense?, con quien empieza a madurar el estilo que se conoció como Bossa nova. Joao Gilberto y su eterno Desafinado. La bossa nova (nueva ola) era una destilación del ritmo de percusión y sincopado del samba, en una forma simplificada que podía ser tocada en una guitarra sin acompañamiento. Esta nueva forma de tocar introdujo también una nueva forma de cantar, a bajo volumen, en susurro. Alrededor de 1962 la bossa-nova ya había sido asimilada por músicos de jazz estadounidenses como Stan Getz. Este último invitó a João Gilberto y Tom Jobim en 1963 para que colaboraran en lo que acabó convirtiéndose en uno de los discos de fusión bossa-nova/jazz más aclamados por la crítica y más vendidos de la historia. Getz/Gilberto fue lanzado en marzo de 1964 y obtuvo el Grammy en 1965. Este trabajo no tiene desperdicio pero hay una canción que destaca sobre el resto, la composición de Jobim/de Moraes «Garota de Ipanema» que se convirtió en una canción clásica del pop internacional y llevó a la fama a la cantante Astrud Gilberto, en aquel entonces esposa de João Gilberto. Es esta. Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto - The Girl From Ipanema Vamos a deternos en este disco porque francamente, merece la pena. Otro de los cortes del álbum es Corcovado. Una bossa nova escrita por Antônio Carlos Jobim en 1960. El título portugués se refiere a la montaña Corcovado en Río de Janeiro Y venga, va, una última. So Danco Samba. Otra bossa nova compuesta en 1962 por Antônio Carlos Jobim y letra de Vinicius de Moraes . La canción fue interpretada por primera vez por João Gilberto y Os Cariocas en agosto de 1962 en el restaurante Au Bon Gourmet en Copacabana, Río de Janeiro. Dejamos la bossa nova para encontrarnos, según algunos, con uno de los mejores cantautores del siglo. Caetano Emanuel Vianna Telles Velloso, Caetano Veloso para los amigos, es, además de un músico genial, cineasta, poeta y activista. Caetano Veloso - Odara Caetano nació el 7 de agosto de 1942 en Santo Amaro de Purificação, una pequeña ciudad del estado de Bahía, (Brasil). La suya fue una numerosa familia amante de la música integrada por ocho hijos, dos de ellos adoptados. Aprendió en su casa a tocar el piano y a los nueve años compuso su primera canción. A fines de 1966 obtuvo su primer éxito cuando su hermana, Maria Bethania, ya una cantante de éxito, grabó una de sus composiciones. Fue en 1968 cuando grabó su primer álbum solista llamado Caetano Veloso, y su música cruzó las fronteras con su controvertida É proibido proibir. Caetano Veloso se presentó en el III Festival Internacional de la Canción promovido por la Cadena Globo. Caetano, acompañado por los Mutantes, su grupo habitual por esa época, interpretó "Está prohibido prohibir" y en la última sesión del festival, la salida al escenario de Caetano fue recibida por el público que llenaba es auditorio con una bronca descomunal. Los Mutantes apenas habían empezado a tocar la introducción de la música cuando el público ya arrojaba huevos, tomates y pedazos de madera contra el escenario. El provocativo Caetano había aparecido vestido con ropa de plástico brillante y collares exóticos y bailando una danza erótica que simulaba los movimientos de una relación sexual. Escandalizada, la audiencia dio la espalda al escenario. La respuesta de los Mutantes fue inmediata: sin dejar de tocar, dieron la espalda al público. Caetano se despachó haciendo un largo e inflamado discurso que realmente no escuchó nadie por el ruido y el follón que reinaba en la sala. Caetano Veloso - Aquarela Do Brasil En 1.995 Caetano Veloso editó un nuevo disco, “Fina estampa”. Este trabajo representó su consagración como artista internacional. Fina estampa es una recreación sofisticada y cuidadosa de temas clásicos hispanoamericanos. Guaranias, boleros, rumbas y hasta tangos. El repertorio elegido, 15 canciones, ya era conocido por Caetano desde su infancia, y si bien algunas fueron recreadas por el intérprete, otras le sirvieron para rendir homenajes a sus musas del pasado. “Para mí, dijo el artista, el destino ideal de este disco es profundizar el diálogo con algunas personas que, esparcidas por la América de habla hispana, vienen generosamente prestando atención a mi música desde hace algún tiempo”. Caetano Veloso - Fina Estampa Lo sorprendente de este trabajo es la capacidad de Cateano Veloso para reinventar unas canciones archiconocidas y dotarlas de un nuevo sentido revelando sutilezas que estaban escondidas. Todo ello aderezado por unos arreglos que van del apoyo orquestal al simple acompañamiento de su guitarra. Este es, también, uno de esos cientos de discos imprescindibles para cualquier amante de la música. Caetano Veloso – Rumba azul Un ejemplo de arreglo para guitarra sola es esta espléndida versión que Cateano hace de María Bonita, el famoso tema de Agustín Lara. La escuchamos. Fue en 1968 cuando grabó su primer álbum solista llamado Caetano Veloso, y su música cruzó las fronteras con su controvertida É proibido proibir. Caetano Veloso se presentó en el III Festival Internacional de la Canción promovido por la Cadena Globo. Caetano, acompañado por los Mutantes, su grupo habitual por esa época, interpretó "Está prohibido prohibir" y en la última sesión del festival, la salida al escenario de Caetano fue recibida por el público que llenaba es auditorio con una bronca descomunal. Los Mutantes apenas habían empezado a tocar la introducción de la música cuando el público ya arrojaba huevos, tomates y pedazos de madera contra el escenario. El provocativo Caetano había aparecido vestido con ropa de plástico brillante y collares exóticos y bailando una danza erótica que simulaba los movimientos de una relación sexual. Escandalizada, la audiencia dio la espalda al escenario. La respuesta de los Mutantes fue inmediata: sin dejar de tocar, dieron la espalda al público. Caetano se despachó haciendo un largo e inflamado discurso que realmente no escuchó nadie por el ruido y el follón que reinaba en la sala. Caetano Veloso - Aquarela Do Brasil En 1.995 Caetano Veloso editó un nuevo disco, “Fina estampa”. Este trabajo representó su consagración como artista internacional. Fina estampa es una recreación sofisticada y cuidadosa de temas clásicos hispanoamericanos. Guaranias, boleros, rumbas y hasta tangos. El repertorio elegido, 15 canciones, ya era conocido por Caetano desde su infancia, y si bien algunas fueron recreadas por el intérprete, otras le sirvieron para rendir homenajes a sus musas del pasado. “Para mí, dijo el artista, el destino ideal de este disco es profundizar el diálogo con algunas personas que, esparcidas por la América de habla hispana, vienen generosamente prestando atención a mi música desde hace algún tiempo”. Vasyl Lomachenko's showdown with Guillermo Rigondeaux is one of the most anticipated fights of 2017. It's a year that's ending with a bang -- or at least we hope so. There's a lot to yammer on about, so let's get to it. This coming weekend Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto rematch on Fox, and it's a fight that has "guilty pleasure" written all over it. The fight could get weird, it could get dirty... Whatever it gets, we'll watch. Also this weekend, the Dirrell Brothers fight on the same card Friday night on Spike. So that's a thing. On Saturday night both Badou Jack and James DeGale are featured in separate fights on Showtime. Jack is set to meet Lucian Bute, while James DeGale fights Rogelio Medina. Worthy of some discussion, however, was the HBO card headlined by Gennady Golovkin, who ran through Dominic Wade in two rounds. He's at the doorstep of something big. Rumors have swirled about how many Pay-Per-View buys Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's win over Miguel Cotto pulled in, and so far the news is quite good, if not surprising. It was a solid kinda-middleweight fight, but perhaps not the clash many had hoped for. The fight that stole all the attention was Francisco Vargas' war with Takashi Miura. In danger of being stopped by a damaged eye, Vargas rallied to end Miura's night in the 9th round. It was an instant "Fight of the Year" contender. As some may have expected, Guillermo Rigondeaux didn't entertain much on the card. But this coming weekend we get to see two huge fighters compete for the heavyweight title on in Wladimir Klitschko and Tyson Fury, on HBO. This could be a case of who you think will win and who you want to win being two different things. Also on the menu, James DeGale fights a comebacking Lucian Bute on Showtime in Quebec City.
