What Is That Massive Tunnel on the Beach South of Fort Funston?

On a Daly City beach just south of Fort Funston there's a large tunnel carved into the cliff. Bay Curious listener Francisco Alvarado noticed it one day while walking his chihuahua, Little Bean, down the beach. The tunnel is large enough for a person to stand up and several feet wide, so of course Francisco's mind started racing. What could this mysterious tunnel be? Is it a remnant of life long ago? Or could it be something as mundane as a drain outlet? We head to Phillip Burton Memorial Beach, as it's technically called, with a geologist to find some answers. Fort Ward was a United States Army coastal defense post built on Bainbridge Island to protect the Bremerton naval shipyard. It was a functioning installation until the 1920s, when it was officially closed in 1928 and turned into a summer camp for underprivileged boys and girls. The navy took over the facility as a recreational camp for sailors in 1938, and the following year it became a secret navy listening post (Station S) for intercepting Japan's military transmissions, as well as tracking enemy shipping in cooperation with other coast defense installations in the Evergreen State. From 1940 through 1953, a Naval Reserve Radio School was also stationed there. The navy closed Fort Ward that same year, and the waterfront area becomes Fort Ward State Park in 1960. (now known as Fort Ward Park, which is part of the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District). Why was Bremerton and its naval shipyard so vital?Listen now to find out the answer, and much more.A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at:     https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastThank you for listening!

ESOL News Oregon, by Timothy Krause Text of article: (MAY 13, 2019) A new store in Portland sells unusual ice cream. The store does not make the ice cream with milk from cows. Instead, it uses milk from beans. The store is called Little Bean. Its website says, "We ‘milk’ chickpeas to create our frozen treats. What’s leftover is refined into the gluten-free flour that makes our waffle cones and cookies that much healthier." The ice cream is vegan because it uses no animal products. It is also gluten-free. Therefore, more people can eat the frozen treats. Chickpeas are also called garbanzo beans. It has other names, too. People also call the bean gram or Egyptian pea. Many people use chickpeas to make Indian and Middle Eastern dishes. They include hummus, chana masala, and falafel. India produces the majority of chickpeas in the world. However, Little Bean gets its beans from farms in Washington state. Read by Eric Dodson. CC BY-NC-SA. From ESOL News Oregon by Timothy Krause. On this episode of Discover Janesville with Yuri Rashkin: Renowned stained glass expert Richard Snyder stopped in to speak about his plans to help restore Oak Hill Chapel and his vision for the historic old gas station in downtown Janesville. Amanda and Jessika Hauser of the Little Bean coffee shop in downtown Janesville stopped in to talk about running their own business and the latest addition to their menu - gourmet fun food on the go - a gourmet brat - that needs a name. Rock County Supervisor Jason Dowd stopped in to talk about what it's like to get elected after running for office for 25 years, the changes he hopes to be a part of at the county government, and  the support that his wife and four children showed him in his desire to make a difference as a public servant.  Be in the know.  Discover Janesville.

Great episode of Discover Janesville this morning.  Since my first guest was not able to join me, I spent the first half hour doing piano improvisations (luckily I always bring my piano with me).  From there, the program took a decidedly community-minded tone as I was joined by Tony Farrell, Sr., volunteer extraordinaire who spoke about a program by Voigt music - run by Tony Farrell, Jr. - that gives away thousands of free music folders to kids in Rock county schools every year.  Next, Amanda Hauser Byrne of the Little Bean coffee shop called in to talk about the suspended coffee program, and finally Tom Brien, who spent 16 years on Janesville City Council, stopped in and we remembered  Ronnie Thomas who passed away a few days ago, following a lifetime of service.  Perhaps the best way to summarize the program is with the quote by President Kennedy: "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country".  Be in the know.  Discover Janesville.
