It's been a busy spring for Julien Baker: she just released a collaborative album with Torres, ‘Send A Prayer My Way', played Coachella with boygenius, & announced her relationship with bandmate Lucy Dacus. Given all that, it seemed like a great time to re-issue my conversation with her from back in 2021. We talked about her last solo record, ‘Little Oblivions', OCD, addiction & relapse, spirituality, & tons more. Her honesty throughout this conversation is why it remains one of my favourite interviews I've done, & one that has also resonated with a lot of you. Sofia's deep knowledge of music and personal journey with mental health help her connect with artists on a meaningful level. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a timely conversation recorded just hours after the presidential election was called, and yes, it was on their minds. It's frequent Talkhouse alum Julien Baker and her old friend Nick Carpenter, aka. Medium Build. Baker is a powerhouse singer and songwriter who's best known these days as one third of the supergroup Boygenius—you'll hear her refer in this chat to Lucy and Phoebe, her bandmates Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers. But we've been fans here since way before that; her amazing debut Sprained Ankle will be 10 years old next year, and she's built herself an incredible catalog—and fanbase—since. Baker's last solo album was 2021's Little Oblivions, and I imagine there's some new music coming in the not-terribly-distant future. She has loaned her powerful voice to other artists since, though, including her old friend Nick Carpenter's project Medium Build—his new EP Marietta, out tomorrow, features a duet with Baker called “Yoke,” check out that song right here. Carpenter, who's based in Alaska, has made five full-lengths as Medium Build, and his deeply personal songs strike a chord in the same way that Baker's do: They have similar backgrounds, having grown up queer in religious households in the South. As you'll hear in this chat, Carpenter explores his background in his music, and his honesty tends to melt audiences that let him in. I'll be truthful: I thought these two were going to bail on chatting the morning after the election, and I wouldn't have blamed them one bit. It doesn't seem like the cheeriest time in America to be a proud member of a marginalized population. But I was so cheered up by listening to them talk: They're not psyched, naturally, but they remain undeterred and committed to spreading honesty and love. Sure, there's some earned cynicism about commercialism and the less pleasant parts of their jobs, but mostly it's the joy of homies, sincerity, and consensual hugs with your local barista. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Julien Baker and Nick Carpenter for chatting. This week, I wanted to go back and revisit an older episode. I recorded an interview with singer and songwriter Julien Baker in 2018. It was a few months after her second album came out. Since then, she's put out another solo album, called Little Oblivions, which was critically acclaimed. And now she's also a member of boygenius, which is the supergroup made up of Julien, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus. They've put out an EP and then, earlier this year, they put out their first full-length. Julien is a really interesting artist, and I think her songwriting is just heartbreaking, especially the song she takes apart for her episode. Here it is: Julien Baker is from Memphis, Tennessee. She released her second album, Turn Out The Lights, in October 2017, on Matador Records. The New York Times called her music "devastating" and Pitchfork gave the album Best New Music. In this episode, Julien tells the story of her song "Appointments," and how writing it helped her work through her thoughts around addiction, depression, and relationships. Julien also takes apart the track “Over,” which was written as part of “Appointments,” but then split off as a separate track. For more, visit songexploder.net/julien-baker.

Episode 208 is a dive into the world of boygenius and their debut album the record.Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus came together as boygenius in 2018 with a debut EP on Matador. The EP combined their collective tones of tones of country, melodic folk, indie and singer-songwriter strands together, before they all went off to make another solo record - Phoebe Bridgers made Punisher (2020), Lucy Dacus made Home Video (2021) and Julien Baker put out Little Oblivions (2021).A week after Punisher came out, Phoebe sent Lucy and Julien a demo of “Emily I'm Sorry” and asked if they could be a band again. Julien made a Google Drive folder called “dare I say it?”, and everyone flooded it with potential songs. It lead to a debut album recorded in January 2022, which was released last week. We review the record and discuss the songwriter's collective cohesion and style together and apart, how their bond of the trio is integral to the band, whether it gels for us and if this is a great record, as many reviews have said.We also look at the "sad girl" trope often attached to this kind of female-lead music, and ask AI to write us a Phoebe Bridgers song.Listen on Apple | Android | ACAST | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed* Support Nialler9 on Patreon and join our Discord communityShow notesSongs played on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify PlaylistSubscribe to the podcast and please leave a review on iTunes, tell your friends or commit to supporting us directly.Support us on Patreon. This episode originally aired on December 16, 2021. We've hosted some incredible Talkhouse Podcast conversations in 2021, and for our final brand-new episode of the year, we've got two people responsible for some of the best records of this year: Julien Baker and Aaron Dessner. Baker released her third album, Little Oblivions, back in February, and it's a doozy. Expanding her sonic palette massively, Baker delivered her powerful, vulnerable songs with much bigger sounds. That might have felt like a gamble, but it paid off massively—she produced it herself and pushed herself into new spaces. Dessner is of course a founding member of the National, with whom he's played for the past 20+ years. While his main band slowed down over the past couple of years, Dessner has been operating at hyperspeed. He was one of the main co-writers and producers on Taylor Swift's Folklore and Evermore albums. He won an Album of the Year Grammy for the former, and was nominated for five more Grammys for the latter. He somehow also found time to release a new album with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon under the name Big Red Machine called How Long Do You Think It's Gonna Last? In addition to loads of guest singers, that record features Dessner on occasional lead vocals. These two have a fantastic conversation about creativity and, specifically, production: Aaron has done a lot of producing for other artists, and Julien is just getting into it. Julien talks about what it's like to have a full live band backing her, rather than being a quote-unquote masochist and playing alone. They talk about what it was like to be deprived of live audiences for so long, and Aaron gets into how his studio setup has changed over the years. Also, they both know what it's like when music can make you cry—that's the kind of thing we love here at Talkhouse. Enjoy. Memphis-bred singer/songwriter Julien Baker's third album Little Oblivions revisits familiar themes in her confessional writing style — faith, addiction, mental health and her sense of isolation. However, in the process of writing the album, Julien had to undergo more transformation than ever before. She now has a radically different understanding of God, of her own struggle with addiction, and how she squares that with her own queer identity. She's also attempting to be kinder to herself. The catalyst for much of this change was losing her sobriety in 2018. It prompted her to cancel shows and step away from her music career — the thing that she loved the most — and possibly giving it up altogether, as she went back to University to finish her degree. Many thanks for making this possible — Thank you Julien for your love of God and returning to music-making. Remfry's so excited about the prospect of Mogwai getting a number 1 album this week that he's changed his t-shirt! Who saw that coming!? Steve's happy for Mogwai but even happier to discover that Remfry has more than one t-shirt.  The rest of the news covers the full range of the good, the bad and the ugly as The Former Boss of the United States of America and The Boss start a podcast together (good), Daft Punk announce they've split up after 28 years (bad) and Reading & Leeds strongly indicate that they will be back this summer, leading a whole slew of UK festivals to announce they will also be returning in 2021 (ugly). Oh and in altogether terrifying news, some fart-hat has decided to make a biopic about Robbie Williams ... starring Robbie Williams. “The Good Mr.Square / She Was Tall, She Was Hight “de The Pretty Things de su álbum “Parachute” de 1970. El disco se abre con un divertido “Since you’ve been gone, everything seems Comic Sans / Since you’ve been gone, everything’s funny wrong”, de este ‘Comic Sans’.
