Bonus Episode: Sean Hurley Breaks Down His Most Iconic Basslines Sean Hurley is a renowned bassist of both studio and stage, known for his dynamic playing and musicality among the top artists in Pop and Rock Music. He gained significant recognition as sideman for John Mayer, dating back to the Battle Studies tour (2010), and then continuing on as a session bassist, contributing to some Mayer's most popular hits on Born and Raised, Paradise Valley, and Sob Rock. Hurley also played a crucial role in Robin Thicke's break-out album (The Evolution of Robin Thicke), laying down smooth, groove-driven basslines that helped define Thicke's signature sound and R&B style. Additionally, Hurley toured and recorded with Vertical Horizon during their debut album, adding depth and precision to the band's alternative rock vibe, ultimately leading to several chart-topping hits. Here I'll sit down with Sean to talk about his extensive session career, his iconic bass playing, the gear uses to get his signature sound, and get him to re-create some of his most iconic tones for the biggest hits he played on. In this week's episode of 36 From The Vault we explore the world of Mr. Sob Rock himself, John Mayer. Focusing on the peak of his solo career, we discuss the backstory of the future Dead & Co. lead guitarist, and try to better understand his path from pop rock to The Dead. Focusing on his 2008 LP of the December 8, 2007 show in LA, Where The Light Is, we hear his DMB side, his Blues Trio side, and his full band, Sob Rock side. Disc One highlight's Mayer's origins with a focus on his original hits through solo acoustic performances. “Neon” stands out as one of the best cuts of the record. In addition, we hear samples of Mayer's Blues Trio with “Who Did You Think I Was” and “Vultures” showcasing depth to Mayer's Blues interests. On Disc Two we hear Mayer's performance with this larger live band. Running through some of his biggest songs from Continuum, we hear the differences between Mayer's experimental ambitions and his more produced solo approaches. Figuring out the path from here to Dead & Co. is one of the special aspects of this episode.36 from the Vault is a production of Osiris Media. It is edited, produced and mastered by Brian Brinkman. In this episode, the impossible happens… Bianca and Julian discuss Toto. “But why?!,” you might ask. Well, on his latest studio album, John Mayer rides the waves of The Search for Everything on a luxury yacht, offering a collection of unrequited love songs coloured in shades of teal. Full of eighties drum machines, synthesizers, and production techniques, Sob Rock is an homage to the popular music style commonly called “yacht rock.” The nature of this project creates a dilemma for Bianca and Julian, who are simultaneously two of the biggest critics of eighties music and two of the staunchest supporters of John Mayer. The result is a discussion that twists and turns, referring to everything and everyone from Toto to The Warriors, Katy Perry to abandoned Zellers warehouses, and obscure George Harrison solo records to insurance company advertisements. What is an “anti-chorus”? Does Julian's fountain pen analogy go on for too long? Did John Mayer predict COVID? Tune in to find out!
Today I met one of the greatest bass player of Los Angeles, Sean Hurley. We discussed his first steps in music and bass playing in Boston, his career as session and live player like John Mayer.

Last time my buddy Mike stopped by the podcast we were days away from the newest John Mayer single and a few weeks away from his newest album Sob Rock. We gushed over our collective love of John and just music in general whether listening or playing but we knew we would have to come back on to give our thoughts Sob Rock! We also talked Tash Sultana, Tom Misch, and all sorts of new artists that are making up our latest playlists, as well as live music, the music industry, handling fame and music in the internet age. If you are not a John Mayer fan this conversation just might change your mind and if you are then your welcome. I can't believe I get to have conversations like this about my deepest passions and then share them with the world! Very lucky guy!!!
When you decided to record your first album, did you have an idea of how you wanted it to sound? Do you prefer a polished mix or a lo-fi mix? Here are some of the topics that we go over in this episode: Is auto-tune cheating? Will spatial audio become just another fad, or will it stay? Is expensive gear necessary for quality studio recordings? What is "chopped and screwed"? Is being a cover artist advantageous to your goal as an artist? Our two normal hosts, Luke and Matt, who host every episode, are back in this episode as well, just like normal, talking about John Mayer's latest album, Sob Rock. This week we're talking about world building - from the minutiae to the BIG ideas. We discuss the ones who did it best and our strategies for recreating that magic.Pod Racing, George Lucas and the Star Wars prequelsKathleen Kennedy - President of Lucasfilm and patron Saint of our career endeavors The 2021 Cannes Film Festival and Brit's fave - the red carpet fashion Pink suits are in! Spike Lee in Vuitton, Olivia Rodrigo in vintage Chanel, Kamala Harris in Sergio Hudson! (Even Kate Middleton at Wimbleton!)Which reminds us - Wimbledon just happened and it was high fashion and star studded. We love to see it. The J.Crew sweater jacket that Meghan Markle wore to Wimbleton. (FYI she has it in heather dove aka light gray)HBO announced ANOTHER GOT spinoff. But we finally get to leave Westeros! Tze (pronounced Z) Chun - a cool dude, an AWESOME twitter follow and his timeline which is THE place to find Asian American creators! (Also he's hella cool and lowkey hilarious.)What is World Building? Great examples in literature (and therefore tv/film): Tolkien and Lord of the Rings, Rowling and Harry Potter, GRRM and GOT, CS Lewis and Narnia, etc.We have ~ thoughts ~ about The Witcher (on Netflix). Season 2 drops this winter.HBO's new show The Last of US - based on a video game and adapted for screen by Craig Mazin.Story archetypes! The Kevin Fiege interview Caitlin loves and recommends too much. Correction: Post credit scenes are called STINGERS (not spider lol). John Francis Daley - Actor (Freaks and Geeks/Bones) but now a successful screenwriter (Horrible Bosses, Vacation, Dungeons and Dragons) Anna Waterhouse - screenwriter (The Gray Man, Rebecca)The Edge of Tomorrow (2014) aka Live Die Repeat - Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt sci-fi action movie that is awesome. World building techniques - top to bottom or bottom to top?Trying to film something set in NYC while not in NYC.Studios and production companies want you to build a world that they can mind for IP for the next 50 years. (Also favorite words from execs “aspirational” and “elevated”)Brittany wants to live in The Sopranos universe… HBO open a damn theme park!Caitlin makes pretty obvious conclusions about post WWI and WW2 audiences and the rise of film and tv but someone had to say it.Emmy Noms - HBO holds its dominance alongside the rise of Disney+. (Which reminds us - Warner Brothers, where are those Harry Potter spin off series at? What are you waiting for?)Perfect IP situation - writing within a world people know and love but telling a story audiences know little to nothing about so there are limited expectations or comparisons. John Mayer's new album “Sob Rock” - out now. Also, we love a well executed theme. The merch! The branding! What a triumph! CAN YOU GET US HARRY STYLE TICKETS?! HELP US PLZ.Brit is heading to DisneyWorld and the world is her oyster!

"Everybody's been dying to know what we think about John Mayer's new record, Sob Rock," Dan asserts at the start of this episode. What's that? You don't actually care what we think about John Mayer's eighth studio album Sob Rock?! Well that's too bad. Eric and Dan are dropping their review of this late '80s inspired pop rock record whether you like or not. So buckle up, buddy. This time the boys are reviewing Mad Viking's Beard and Body Soap in Blodorn (coffee, chocolate, peppermint) and Ragnarok (Fruity Pebbles-esque) scents. Get the bath water ready. Finally, the duo wraps up the episode with a review of two different collaboration IPAs. Dan shares his thoughts on Dangerous Dual Double West Coast IPA, a collaboration between Dangerous Man Brewing in Minneapolis and Dual Citizen Brewing in St. Paul, Minnesota. Meanwhile, Eric reviews All Gas No Brakes Triple IPA, a collaboration between ReUnion Brewery in Coralville, Iowa, and Wake Brewing in Rock Island, Illinois. Oh, and the Quad Cities includes Davenport (Iowa), Rock Island (Illinois), Moline (Illinois) ... and Bettendorf (Iowa). A question we fail to answer in this episode. You're welcome.

Nick shares remembrances for two artists that passed away last week. Biz Markie was a rapper & producer known for his humor and positivity. The outpouring from fans & fellow artists is an incredible testament to his artist importance and legacy. We also remember Robby Steinhardt, the co-founder, co-vocalist & violinist for the band Kansas. His contribution as a violinist helped distinguish Kansas' sound and his energy on tour helped build the fanbase that's kept them going nearly 50 years.Songs:Biz Markie - “Just a Friend”Kansas - “Song For America”Greg caught a new documentary on YouTube called “Jaco Pastorious: The Lost Tapes”, but he doesn't recommend it if you're not already a fan. Instead, he recommends listening to Jaco…which we proceed to do without complaint. In other news, Last week John Mayer released “Sob Rock”, his 8th studio album. Many early reviews tread cautiously, but our friends at Pitchfork gave us a little something to work with so Greg decided it was time to bring back “Review The Review”! [Pitchfork]Songs:Jaco Pastorius - “Crisis”John Mayer - “Shot in the Dark”Jay loves the new Wallflowers album “Exit Wounds” & so do a lot of typically harsh hipster music critics. This is worth noting.Rick Rubin takes a deep dive into Paul McCartney's memory of his days in the Beatles & Wings in the new Hulu Series McCartney 3,2,1. This leads to a lengthy discussion about bass in which no bassists were permitted to participate, apologies for that.Last up, Thunder Road's opening line has been unequivocally settled and “Mary's dress sways”.Have a great week everyone!Song: Wallflowers - “Maybe Your Heart's Not In It No More”
Arch nemesis and corporate bully Dude With Sign is up to his bullying ways again, and this time it's about coffee. Sob Rock is growing on us. We've got an idea for a book that we legitimately might make. M. Night Shyamalan has a new movie coming and there's a Hollywood friendship that needs to make its way onto the podcast.
Our resident heartbreaker is back with a new album, Sob Rock, and us closeted John Mayer fans are back to sort through our own emotions. We are joined by Abby, whose claim to fame is being the daughter of a John Mayer groupie, and get all the gossip about what it was like having a famous imaginary “Step Father.” From being taught to hate his girlfriends to hearing stories about her mom following his tour for weeks, Abby shares comical insight on how Mayer has impacted her life. Then we dive into the album and analyze if Mayer's triumphant return is truly as inspiring as it was advertised to be. And because Mayer is known for his love life, we couldn't talk about the album without reflecting on how the concepts relate to our own outlooks on relationships.
