On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a timely conversation recorded just hours after the presidential election was called, and yes, it was on their minds. It's frequent Talkhouse alum Julien Baker and her old friend Nick Carpenter, aka. Medium Build. Baker is a powerhouse singer and songwriter who's best known these days as one third of the supergroup Boygenius—you'll hear her refer in this chat to Lucy and Phoebe, her bandmates Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers. But we've been fans here since way before that; her amazing debut Sprained Ankle will be 10 years old next year, and she's built herself an incredible catalog—and fanbase—since. Baker's last solo album was 2021's Little Oblivions, and I imagine there's some new music coming in the not-terribly-distant future. She has loaned her powerful voice to other artists since, though, including her old friend Nick Carpenter's project Medium Build—his new EP Marietta, out tomorrow, features a duet with Baker called “Yoke,” check out that song right here. Carpenter, who's based in Alaska, has made five full-lengths as Medium Build, and his deeply personal songs strike a chord in the same way that Baker's do: They have similar backgrounds, having grown up queer in religious households in the South. As you'll hear in this chat, Carpenter explores his background in his music, and his honesty tends to melt audiences that let him in. I'll be truthful: I thought these two were going to bail on chatting the morning after the election, and I wouldn't have blamed them one bit. It doesn't seem like the cheeriest time in America to be a proud member of a marginalized population. But I was so cheered up by listening to them talk: They're not psyched, naturally, but they remain undeterred and committed to spreading honesty and love. Sure, there's some earned cynicism about commercialism and the less pleasant parts of their jobs, but mostly it's the joy of homies, sincerity, and consensual hugs with your local barista. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Julien Baker and Nick Carpenter for chatting. Keep communication calm during divorce proceedings: If you're going through a divorce, Improved Relationships through Personal Growth and Accountability We all know that relationships are like plants; they need nurture and care to thrive. Personal growth and accountability play a significant role in this nurturing process. When we accept our mistakes and take steps towards growth, we build stronger and healthier relationships. Being accountable helps us to be more understanding, empathetic, and prevents the blame game, promoting a healthier relationship dynamic. As per Daniel and Nick's conversation, Nick underlines the importance of personal growth and accountability in relationships. It was indeed painful for Nick to accept that he had played a part in the breakdown of his marriage, but this acceptance led to self-reflection and personal growth. It's this accountability and growth that Nick emphasized on, for managing relationships, even when they turn complicated. Overcoming Negative Self-Talk and Building Resilience Negative self-talk is a trap that many of us fall into, especially during challenging situations. It's significant to realize that negative self-talk not only hampers our mood but also impacts our overall well-being. Overcoming such negativity and building resilience becomes crucial for emotional health and personal growth. Nick shared his personal experience of how vocalizing his negative thoughts helped him deal effectively with challenging emotions, thus overcoming self-blame and building resilience. He emphasized the need to vocalize such thoughts to prevent the onset of a downward emotional spiral. This candid sharing by Nick reinforces the importance of addressing negative self-talk and underscores resilience as a key tool for personal growth. Coping with the Process of Divorce and Separation Going through a divorce or separation often involves more than just emotional turmoil. It becomes a complex process, involving legal battles, custody issues, and financial strains. The process can be long and exhausting, leaving a scar not only on the couple involved but also on the children. Nick shares his experiences with the process of divorce, suggesting a less adversarial approach to it. He emphasizes how the exorbitant costs associated with lawyers pose a financial strain and have a detrimental effect on the children's well-being. Nick's experience emphasizes the need for a more compassionate and less adversarial process that prioritizes children's interests.
Nick Carpenter joined us again on the podcast. He just came off a sold-out night at Bears Tooth for First Tap AND released a new EP "Health". There's a lot in this episode and we couldn't more proud of Nick's success - like a couple of distant uncles that never met their nephew in person until 6 months ago. #103 - Pros and Cons of Successful Art with Nick Carpenter from Medium BuildNew episodes every Monday.Hosted by Kyle Reading & Steven CornfieldContact us…Email Us:hey@gofixyourselfpodcast.comInstagram: https://bit.ly/GFYInstagram@kyleareading@stevencornfieldTwitter:https://bit.ly/GFYTwitterFacebook:https://bit.ly/GFYFacebook
Nick Carpenter, of the band Medium Build, grew up in a religious household, so the church and its teachings ruled everything. Money was important too, but he says it was always just out of their reach. So, in many ways, that resulted in them idolizing it because so many emotions were attached to it. Obsession, fear, paranoia, shame. It influenced their perception of themselves and others. This led Nick to his fear of money — that if he didn't remain vigilant and aware of the pitfalls of wealth, it would consume him. So, he and his brother made a conscious effort to undo a lot of what they were taught and, in the process, figure out who they are without those teachings. Today, he and his parents have found understanding in their differences. They focus on connecting on the things they enjoy — food, music, playing board games. They stay honest with each other and they remind themselves that they're stronger together. When he was 8 years old, Nick started singing in front of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people at his church. Then, when he was 15, he realized that he wanted to write and play his own music. He wrote a song and played it for a girl he had a crush on. She didn't like him, but she liked the song. So, he knew he had an ability to entertain people and connect with them. He says that his songs are his journal entries. Historically, they've been self-referential, but recently they've become more fictional. Many times borrowing from people and situations he observes. It all helps him process his life and the world around him. He wants it to be his career, to travel around the world singing his stories. But he says that if it all stopped — if his manager left him and no one booked him for shows anymore — he would still play music. Most likely he'd be at the open mics around Anchorage.

In 2022, most supply chain leaders are primarily focused on improving working capital as a way to combat inflation. Inventory positions are increasing as purchases are now cheaper than they will be 6 months from now… at least in theory. This perception and the actions it drives are putting further strain on an already overly taxed supply chain. In this Supply Chain Now livestream episode, Scott Luton and Greg White were joined by Dan Reeve and Nick Carpenter from Esker and Dr. Morgan Swink from TCU to explore how digital technology can help you improve your company's working capital - and where on the balance sheet to look for improvements: • How today's supply chain challenges are also affecting each company's suppliers and customers • The extent to which companies are purposefully managing their cash flow v. allowing external forces to dictate their choices • What Dr. Swink and his team at TCU learned from recent research into working capital practices and outcomes Additional Links & Resources: Learn more about Supply Chain Now: https://supplychainnow.com (https://supplychainnow.com) Check out our new Supply Chain Now Media Kit: https://bit.ly/3zKRLyL (https://bit.ly/3zKRLyL) Subscribe to Supply Chain Now and all other Supply Chain Now programs:https://supplychainnow.com/subscribe ( https://supplychainnow.com/subscribe) Leveraging Logistics and Supply Chain for Ukraine: https://vectorgl.com/stand-with-ukraine/ (https://vectorgl.com/stand-with-ukraine/) 2022 Q2 U.S. Bank Freight Payment Index: https://freight.usbank.com (https://freight.usbank.com) WEBINAR- Key Elements to a Successful WMS Lifecycle: https://bit.ly/3Q3F2O6 (https://bit.ly/3Q3F2O6) WEBINAR- How to Operationalize Supply Chain Resilience to Create Value in the Supply Chain: https://bit.ly/3QI6OjM (https://bit.ly/3QI6OjM) This episode is hosted by Scott Luton and Greg White. You'll recall last week that we listened to his submission to the Tiny Desk, a performance that won him the opportunity to perform what we'll experience today. Of course you should seek out Quinn and Nick and support them directly. That's why I do this thing. Love yinz! -G
