Interview by Angela CroudaceNick Thomas, frontman of The Spill Canvas, is bringing something special to Australian fans this year — a long-awaited celebration of their beloved 2005 album One Fell Swoop. Speaking ahead of their debut tour Down Under, Thomas shared his excitement and gratitude for being able to continue making music nearly two decades on.“To get to do this for even a year, let alone over 20, is a marvel in and of itself,” he said. “We've never been to Australia, so to come over now and play this album in full feels really special.”The tour, a co-headlining run with fellow emo pioneers The Juliana Theory, marks a major milestone for both bands. Thomas credits Emotion Is Dead as a formative influence in his own musical journey, and says he's thrilled to share the stage with artists he once idolised. “I grew up listening to them — now we're friends. It's wild.”The Spill Canvas will perform One Fell Swoop front to back, staying true to its original sequencing. “We spent a lot of time curating the track list as a journey,” Thomas explained. “It just feels right to honour it that way.” After the final track, Self-Conclusion, Thomas plans to segue into a few more fan favourites to round out the night.Despite never visiting Australia before, Thomas is embracing the adventure with enthusiasm. “I'd love to see the Opera House, meet people, maybe spot a kangaroo. I'm also — embarrassingly — a big fan of Below Deck Down Under. Captain Jason is my hero!”Reflecting on the recording of One Fell Swoop, Thomas recalled humble beginnings at Black Lodge Studios in Kansas with producer Ed Rose. “It was our first real studio experience. I remember Ryan Pope from The Get Up Kids giving me a shoulder rub while I was recording guitar. I tried to play it cool, but I was freaking out.”Over the years, The Spill Canvas has toured with major acts like the Goo Goo Dolls and OneRepublic. Thomas fondly recalled an evening where Ryan Tedder listened to his demos and gave thoughtful feedback. “Moments like that are unforgettable. It's what makes this lifestyle feel like a shared journey.”After all these years, Thomas remains a passionate music fan, recently inspired by artists like Medium Build and Bilmuri (not the actor). “Always be a fan,” he said. “That's what keeps it exciting.”Check out the full interview for more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Nicholas Carpenter is the creative force behind this band that hails from Alaska, which has toured with FINNEAS and Tyler Chiders, and recorded for Island Records.
Creating a vulnerable, hearty connection with a proper dose of humour, Nick Carpenter's Medium Build is built on adolescent experience. He talks curiosity, trying to be in the moment and how to 'jush' your eggs. His new EP Marietta is out now. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a timely conversation recorded just hours after the presidential election was called, and yes, it was on their minds. It's frequent Talkhouse alum Julien Baker and her old friend Nick Carpenter, aka. Medium Build. Baker is a powerhouse singer and songwriter who's best known these days as one third of the supergroup Boygenius—you'll hear her refer in this chat to Lucy and Phoebe, her bandmates Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers. But we've been fans here since way before that; her amazing debut Sprained Ankle will be 10 years old next year, and she's built herself an incredible catalog—and fanbase—since. Baker's last solo album was 2021's Little Oblivions, and I imagine there's some new music coming in the not-terribly-distant future. She has loaned her powerful voice to other artists since, though, including her old friend Nick Carpenter's project Medium Build—his new EP Marietta, out tomorrow, features a duet with Baker called “Yoke,” check out that song right here. Carpenter, who's based in Alaska, has made five full-lengths as Medium Build, and his deeply personal songs strike a chord in the same way that Baker's do: They have similar backgrounds, having grown up queer in religious households in the South. As you'll hear in this chat, Carpenter explores his background in his music, and his honesty tends to melt audiences that let him in. I'll be truthful: I thought these two were going to bail on chatting the morning after the election, and I wouldn't have blamed them one bit. It doesn't seem like the cheeriest time in America to be a proud member of a marginalized population. But I was so cheered up by listening to them talk: They're not psyched, naturally, but they remain undeterred and committed to spreading honesty and love. Sure, there's some earned cynicism about commercialism and the less pleasant parts of their jobs, but mostly it's the joy of homies, sincerity, and consensual hugs with your local barista. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Julien Baker and Nick Carpenter for chatting. I spoke with Matthew Koma of Winnetka Bowling League, on the heels of their first LP 'Sha La La' & the standalone single "This Is Life", featuring Medium Build & Dawes. Both the album & the single share a healthy mix of nostalgia & unfiltered honesty - two things that are rarely seen together. But that's what makes Winnetka Bowling League great: they remind us that we can long for the simplicity of youth, while also recognizing the flaws of the past. Learn more about your ad choices. Well this episode's check-in is bound to be one that may end up with one of us (Marsha) probably having to apologize to someone. We talk being childfree by choice and not by choice, the narratives society has around motherhood, and the weird competition around stress and exhaustion. Did we plan for the first twenty minutes to be us discussing expanding (and not expanding) families, only to then be exploring an episode dedicated to cultivating families? We did not. But hey, everything goes our way! Later in the ep, we talk all about Ted Lasso Season 2, Ep. 4 “Carol of the Bells”. It's Christmas in February!! This week, we're examining the communication & relational dynamics in Ted Lasso Season 2, Ep. 3. In this episode, we look at a few different characters and how they're trying to find their roles - with a focus on Rebecca, Sam, Jamie, & (of course) Ted. As we explore the story lines of these characters in this episode, we study how they're each trying to find their role. We discuss spending time with children (when you're not used to doing so), leadership & power dynamics (power-with / power-over), nonviolent action, how it's difficult to be accepted into a team, and different styles of motivation (some better than others). Nick Carpenter joined us again on the podcast. He just came off a sold-out night at Bears Tooth for First Tap AND released a new EP "Health". He was gracious enough to sit down with us after an exhausting week and chat all things again. We covered the darker side of "success" in your art where it seems like doubt plagues you at every corner to micro-dosing mushrooms. There's a lot in this episode and we couldn't more proud of Nick's success - like a couple of distant uncles that never met their nephew in person until 6 months ago. #103 - Pros and Cons of Successful Art with Nick Carpenter from Medium BuildNew episodes every Monday.Hosted by Kyle Reading & Steven CornfieldContact us…Email Us:hey@gofixyourselfpodcast.comInstagram: https://bit.ly/GFYInstagram@kyleareading@stevencornfieldTwitter:https://bit.ly/GFYTwitterFacebook:https://bit.ly/GFYFacebook

Nick Carpenter, of the band Medium Build, grew up in a religious household, so the church and its teachings ruled everything. Money was important too, but he says it was always just out of their reach. So, in many ways, that resulted in them idolizing it because so many emotions were attached to it. Obsession, fear, paranoia, shame. It influenced their perception of themselves and others. This led Nick to his fear of money — that if he didn't remain vigilant and aware of the pitfalls of wealth, it would consume him. So, he and his brother made a conscious effort to undo a lot of what they were taught and, in the process, figure out who they are without those teachings. Today, he and his parents have found understanding in their differences. They focus on connecting on the things they enjoy — food, music, playing board games. They stay honest with each other and they remind themselves that they're stronger together. When he was 8 years old, Nick started singing in front of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people at his church. Then, when he was 15, he realized that he wanted to write and play his own music. He wrote a song and played it for a girl he had a crush on. She didn't like him, but she liked the song. So, he knew he had an ability to entertain people and connect with them. He says that his songs are his journal entries. Historically, they've been self-referential, but recently they've become more fictional. Many times borrowing from people and situations he observes. It all helps him process his life and the world around him. He wants it to be his career, to travel around the world singing his stories. But he says that if it all stopped — if his manager left him and no one booked him for shows anymore — he would still play music. Most likely he'd be at the open mics around Anchorage.
