Have you ever been out on the trail or road and encountered a mechanical issue that left you stranded and afraid to ride longer distances on your own? Or maybe you've been putting off taking care of your bike because you're not sure what you should be doing? In either case, you're not alone. Many cyclists, especially women, haven't been given the encouragement or resources to learn these crucial skills. That's why I'm thrilled to welcome Casey Wytaske to the show. Casey is a professional bike mechanic and certified mountain bike coach who has dedicated her career to empowering women in cycling. After discovering her passion for bike mechanics while volunteering at a local non-profit bike shop in 2013, Casey went on to become certified at the United Bicycle Institute and now works as a demo technician for Liv Cycling. In today's episode, we'll discuss why there are so few female bike mechanics, essential maintenance skills every cyclist should know, and what tools you should have in your home toolkit. Casey will also share insights about the Girls Gone Gravel mechanic camps she leads and offer practical tips for getting your bike ready for riding season. If you've ever hoped to become better at bike maintenace, this is an episode you don't want to miss.

Host Rebecca Charlton (@beccacharlton_insta) is joined by Liv Cycling's Cassondra Spring (@cassondra) and reporter Danni Shrosbree (@danni_shrosbree) as they dissect stage 3 of the world's most prestigious stage race and previews the next days action to come. In Episode 1, we talk with Liv Cycling racer Kaysee Armstrong. The conversation starts with Kaysee telling us about running and hiking the Rim2Rim2Rim in the Grand Canyon on Winter Solstice, an adventure she had finished the day before the recording alongside her fiancé. The conversation is the perfect starter as it embodies Kaysee: a lover of all things endurance and adventure! We also talk about Kaysee's racing in 2021 as well as her goals for 2022, which includes the Lifetime Grand Prix series. Kaysee has been on the Liv Factory team for years and has seen a lot of success with many podiums at high level races. What she enjoys most about the Liv team, however, is that they value her beyond racing and that they work endlessly to help get more girls and women on bikes. Cycling has impacted Kaysee's life in such a positive way and she works hard to help spread the joy so that others can have a similar experience. Lastly, we talk about the youth cycling team she helped found and is still involved with in Knoxville, Tennessee. This episode is fun, cheerful, energetic, and really positive! +++MÚSICA: BEYOND THE TIME. Good B Music. This week Morgan is joined by Alyssa Podesta. Alyssa is a Liv Cycling ambassador who has an infectious enthusiasm for the sport and an open, honest and fun personality. She and Morgan discuss how an ex boyfriend got her into the sport, why she believes this to be such a cliche for women in mountain biking and how some sexist attitudes still persist in what is otherwise a very welcoming community. They talk about some of the differences between surfing (a sport Alyssa competed in from an early age) and mountain biking, how female brands like Liv Cycles can encourage more women into the sport, what her plans are for the future and much else!
Inspired by our "Things We Were Wrong About" podcast, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages to different approaches that brands take to women's bikes. We also interviewed three of the industry's leading female marketers from three brands with very different approaches. We chatted with Kelli Emmett, the Brand Manager at Juliana Bicycles, Brook Hopper, the Global Marketing Manager at Liv Cycling, and Elorie Slater, the Marketing Manager at Pivot Cycles. All three came to cycling from different backgrounds and work for brands that have entirely different approaches to designing bikes and marketing to women, which made for an interesting conversation.

Ash and Andi had the idea to create a women's specific mountain bike event and gathering. From their combined knowledge of the bike industry they did just that and now Roam Rides is the go to women's mountain bike event in the world. They hold retreats and events all over the US in some of the top riding destinations along with sweet bike demos and much more. I've known Ash since she was slinging bikes for Liv Cycling and met And shortly after their birth of Roam so it was rad to sit them down and find out a little more about what they've been up to and what the future holds for Roam.
This week, to send off Black History Month in style, we will be re-releasing an interview each day highlighting a Black person we’ve had on Burn It All Down in the past whose words and actions still resonate with us all. Back in April 2018, Shireen interviewed road cyclist Ayesha McGowan. At the time, McGowan was working toward becoming the first female African American pro cyclist in the US. They talk about that journey, about how activism and involvement in community engagement turned into racing, and about what we can all do to support diversity in road cycling. I’m pleased to say today — and you might have caught this during a Bad Ass Woman of the Week segment earlier this year — McGowan signed a contract in January with Liv Cycling making her a professional road cyclist. If you’d like to hear more interviews with Black athletes, check out our Guests list on our website: www.burnitalldownpod.com. We’ve talked to a bunch of hoopers including Bilqis Adbul-Qaadir, Essence Carson, Layshia Clarendon, Shakyla Hill, Kelsey Bone, Monique Billings; footballers Eni Aluko and Nicole McClure; legendary Olympic sprinter Wyomia Tyus; softball superstar AJ Andrews and baseball’s Malaika Underwood; hammer thrower Gwen Berry; speed skater Erin Jackson; and volleyball player Simone Lee. That’s not even close to all of them but it gives you a taste of the many Black athletes who have come on the show. He has been with Giant since 2003 and has a lot of experience in the cycling world before his time at Giant. Michael discusses the Giant and Liv bikes and the brands, shares his thoughts on the improving the cycling community, gender and bikes, advocacy, and more. ----------- ABOUT THIS EPISODE Giant Bicycles – https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us Liv Cycling – https://www.liv-cycling.com/us ---------- ABOUT DIRT FEST Maurice and Elaine Tierney started Dirt Rag in 1989, creating a magazine that provided an inclusive forum where readers shared their stoke for the riding, culture, and lifestyle of mountain biking. After having a great time at the legendary Jim Thorpe Mountain Bike Weekend, the pair decided that Dirt Rag was in a position to translate the magazine’s in-print stoke to an in-person “gathering of the tribe.” The first edition of Dirt Fest took place in 1991 at Camp Soles, a YMCA youth camp east of Pittsburgh. The original event was decidedly chill. There was no vendor expo bristling with the bleeding edge of bicycle technology. Demo rides amounted to swapping bikes with a newfound friend. There was a lake, a bonfire, and a bicycle polo field. Nighttime entertainment consisted of an attendee strumming a guitar at the group bonfire—a far cry from The Earthtones jamming for a circus tent full of partying mountain bikers. In 2007, Bonnie Tu was the CFO of Giant Bicycles and decided to join the former Chairman who was riding the Tour of Taiwan, a 900km ride that circumnavigates Taiwan. At the time Bonnie was in her late 50s and had not ridden a bicycle since High School (and never a bike with gears!). But when Bonnie walked into a Giant Bicycles retail outlet, she was shocked to realise she couldn’t find a bike or any apparel to suit her needs. The ride proved to be a "very painful experience". And 12 months later, Liv Cycling - the first comprehensive cycling brand dedicated to female cyclists - was born. Fast forward to 2019 and Bonnie is now the Chairperson of Giant Bicycles and is still incredibly driven to ensure women are empowered to participate in the sport of cycling, via everything from cutting edge components on Liv bikes through to exploring cycling clothes for Muslim women. Bonnie is a joyous, passionate woman and I am excited to welcome her to Sparta Chicks Radio this week to discuss: - her childhood growing up in Taiwan, - her earliest memory of learning to ride a bike, - how she became involved in the cycling industry in the 70s, yet only got back on the bike for herself in her late 50s (and learning to shift gears in the process), - the origins of Liv Cycling and it’s commitment to build bicycles “for and by” women, and - her first triathlon at the age of 68. An age group mountain biker and mum of 3 in her 40s, Kate was scrolling through Instagram while breastfeeding her youngest daughter in 2017 when she saw a competition by Liv Cycling (an incredible women’s cycling brand) for a spot in their Trail Squad; the prize included a new bike and entry to a mountain bike stage race somewhere around the world. Needing a goal or something for herself, she decided to enter the competition. Then one Sunday, months later she opened her email to find out she had won and that she was off to the Cape Epic — one of the hardest mountain bikes races in the world. Held in South Africa, the Cape Epic is considered the Tour de France of the mountain bike world. It’s an 8 day stage race with 100km+ days in the saddle, in the heat, dust and dirt of South Africa with around 15,000m of climbing (that’s nearly 2x the height of Everest). Kate’s first reaction was ‘I was honestly petrified. My first thought was: “there is no way I can do that”.’ Then she took a deep breath and said ‘yes’.
