Achtvoudig E.K medaillewinnares (op weg/tijdrit/baan -23) Vera Koedooder en voormalig profwielrenster Eva Buurman treffen elkaar online op de avond na het E.K. wegwielrennen in Belgisch Limburg. Daar legden de rensters 162 kilometer af tussen Heusden-Zolder en Hasselt. Ze praten na over de saaie koers met overigens wel een fantastische Europees kampioene in de naam van de Nederlandse Lorena Wiebes! Zij won voor de tweede keer de Europese titel. Met overmacht en na goed teamwork van een sterk TeamNL won ze afgetekend in de massasprint voor Elisa Balsamo en Daria Pikulik. Een van die sterke TeamNL rensters was Loes Adegeest! De Olympische Spelen in Parijs zijn nog steeds in volle gang! Vera zat afgelopen weekend met haar gezin ook een lang weekend in Parijs (naar de wielerwedstrijden en atletiek) en daarom is deze podcastshow (zoals vorige keer al gemeld) wat later online dan gepland. De Olympische Spelen zijn begonnen! Sander Valentijn, Jeroen Vanbelleghem, Thijs van Amerongen en Iris Slappendel kijken terug op de tijdrit, het mountainbiken en vooruit naar de wedstrijden op de weg. Eerst is er aandacht voor de tijdrit bij de vrouwen, waarin je hoort waarom het parcours zo lastig was in deze omstandigheden, hoe Grace Brown kon pieken op het juiste moment en waarom Ellen van Dijk en Demi Vollering op meer hadden gehoopt. Voor de Belgen viel er nauwelijks meer te halen en Jeroen vertelt wat de eerste en derde plaats met de Belgen deed. Natuurlijk komt ook de tijdrit van Remco aan bod en wat de mogelijke implicaties zijn als hij zich in de toekomst minder op het tijdrijden zou gaan focussen. Verder aandacht voor MTB, waarbij er teleurstelling was voor Pieterse op zondag en er wellicht succes wacht voor Pidcock op maandag. En natuurlijk kijken we uitgebreid vooruit naar de wegrit. Hoe valt die te controleren met de kleine teams, loont het daarom voor de eenlingen om vroeg in de aanval te gaan en krijgen we een doldwaze ‘juniorenkoers' in de straten van Parijs? De KNWU rolt vandaag een plan uit, omdat ze zich daar zorgen maken over de aanwas van jonge wielrensters. Er blijkt geen groei in het aantal meisjes dat wedstrijden rijdt, sterker nog, de cijfers tonen een daling aan. So, she created one. The Cyclists' Alliance was founded in 2017 to support female racers during and after their careers. The Cyclists' Alliance is a union funded by donations and subscriptions. Approximately one third of the women's peloton are paying members, Slappendel says. As a veteran former racer, Slappendel talks with PYSO hosts and former racers Bobby Julich and Gus Morton about the discrepancies between women's and men's unions for riders, and how they all interact with the UCI. "It took me 10 years, but I realized there's no one holding teams or anyone accountable for how the riders are treated," Slappendel said of her thought process behind starting The Cyclists' Alliance. "And I think that was the spark that started me thinking about a union or at least having a better representation of the riders and the stakeholders." Slappendel says that while the sport has made strides forward since 2004 when she began racing — "there are more top riders, more riders who are able to live from the sport, more good races" — that the sport still has a long way to go. En ineens was alles anders. Na drie maanden terugknokken waren er slechts drie koersen en toen zat het seizoen er alweer op. Corona veranderde alles. Is het seizoen echt voorbij? In this episode Kirsten Frattini, women's editor at Cyclingnews, speaks with former cyclist and human rights activist Kristen Worley, who just released her memoir, "Woman Enough - How a boy became a woman and changed the world of sport." We take an in depth look at the guidelines set in place by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for transitioned XY women and the newly proposed regulations set by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) for women with differences of sex development (DSD), recently deliberated on at the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) in the Caster Semenya vs IAAF appeal. We highlight the problems and controversies surrounding the rules, and the need for more scientific research and medical expertise when creating policy for these individuals. We also take a look back at the evolution of gender verification testing from the so-called 'nude parades' to 'sex-testing' and the current forms of testosterone testing used today. Part of our discussion circles around how old ideologies have impacted women in sports, including cycling. And we discuss how policies have affected athletes' human rights. Worley was born XY male, named Chris Jackson, and fully transitioned to XY female having undergone sex-reassignment surgery in her late 20s. She was forced to undergo gender verification processes to obtain a licence to compete as a woman. She went on to challenge the IOC along with the World Anti-doping Agency, UCI, Cycling Canada and the Ontario Cycling Association, outside of the CAS, in the court of civil law at the Superior Court of Justice and then the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal in Toronto. Her case brought attention to the lack of scientific research behind the policies, practices and protocols in place for transgendered and biological women with higher testosterone levels. She also demonstrated how the IOC's guidelines filter down through the international federations, such as the UCI, and into the national and provincial rules at the lower levels of sport. Worley currently gives educational discussions around the world on the subject of diversity and inclusion in sport. She also acts as a consultant on human rights to The Cyclists' Alliance founded by Iris Slappendel.
