Leicester City face Chelsea in the FA Cup Final at Wembley with the Foxes aiming to win the trophy for the first time. BBC Football correspondent John Murray and Peter Trenter, from the Chelsea Supporters Group, join us ahead the game. The first Black American woman in professional cycling – Ayesha McGowan – tells us her sport needs to change and explains what she is doing to help. McGowan has awarded mini-grants to support nine women of colour to race at next month’s Tour of America’s Dairyland in Wisconsin. She also tells us how she went from seeing riding bikes as simply a mode of transportation to something she could make a career from and how she would love to compete at the women’s Tour de France in 2022. Great Britain’s Jude Hamer tells us how the new women’s professional wheelchair basketball league will help grow the sport, the realities of playing in mixed sex teams and how she is hoping to win a medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. Hamer and her partner, the rower Lauren Rowles, are both heading to Tokyo and Hamer is keen to win a Paralympic medal at her third attempt. Hellah Sidibe joins us as he nears the end of his transcontinental run from California to New York. The Mali-born former Major League Soccer Player started his run in March and is doing it to raise funds for a charity that tackles poverty by recycling and reusing old shoes. Sidibe reflects on his early life in Mali when shoes were a scarce resource and tells us how he went from hating running to taking on this challenge. And in Sporting Witness, we go back to 1989 and one of the most dramatic climaxes to an English football season. On a remarkable night at Anfield, Arsenal with the odds stacked against them, overcame Liverpool to claim the league title. (Photo: The Emirates FA Cup Trophy is seen inside Wembley Stadium. About this episode:In this week’s episode, coach Adam talks with CTS Athlete Ayesha McGowan about her journey to becoming the first-ever African-American female pro cyclist, cycling's diversity problem, and her thoughts on changes that need to happen within the industry to create more opportunity and an inclusive culture.Guest Bio – Ayesha McGowan:Ayesha McGowan is the first African-American female professional cyclist, ever. Ayesha started riding bikes as a commuter while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston. Since then, she has submerged herself into the world of cycling. While living in Brooklyn, NY, she worked as a preschool music teacher, a Branding Administrator for WE Bike NYC, an organization geared towards getting more women on bicycles, and Director of Programs for InTandem, an organization that provides access to bike rides for people with disabilities. In 2014, she discovered the world of bike racing. She won her first state championship in her third race. It didn’t take long for her to notice that she was one of the very few females of African-American descent on the scene. In fact, she discovered that there had not been a single female African-American pro road cyclist, ever. She took it upon herself to become the first. As an advocate by example, she has dedicated herself to encouraging and inspiring other women of color to follow their dreams, whatever they may be. Through various initiatives that focus on representation like her ‘Do Better Together’ virtual ride series, Ayesha has inspired countless people to ride more, ride together, and to challenge themselves and their views of how they define the word “cyclist”.Episode Highlights:Ayesha's journey to becoming the first African-American female professional cyclistCycling's diversity problemImplicit bias, privilege, tokenismEquity vs. equalityCreating more opportunity and inclusive cultureThe path forward for the cycling industryRead More About And Connect With Ayesha McGowanhttp://www.aquickbrownfox.com/https://www.liv-cycling.com/us/teams-and-riders/liv-racing/133/ayesha-mcgowan/1154Instagram: @ayesupposeFacebook: @ayesupposeTwitter: @ayesupposeRelated Articles With Ayesha:http://www.aquickbrownfox.com/presshttps://www.bicycling.com/culture/a19702179/diversity-is-cyclings-most-urgent-problem/https://www.outsideonline.com/2269306/there-are-no-female-african-american-pro-cyclistshttps://www.espn.com/espnw/life-style/story/_/id/21962159/ayesha-mcgowan-plans-first-african-american-female-pro-cyclistListen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, or on your favorite podcast platform

This week, to send off Black History Month in style, we will be re-releasing an interview each day highlighting a Black person we’ve had on Burn It All Down in the past whose words and actions still resonate with us all. Back in April 2018, Shireen interviewed road cyclist Ayesha McGowan. At the time, McGowan was working toward becoming the first female African American pro cyclist in the US. They talk about that journey, about how activism and involvement in community engagement turned into racing, and about what we can all do to support diversity in road cycling. I’m pleased to say today — and you might have caught this during a Bad Ass Woman of the Week segment earlier this year — McGowan signed a contract in January with Liv Cycling making her a professional road cyclist. If you’d like to hear more interviews with Black athletes, check out our Guests list on our website: www.burnitalldownpod.com. We’ve talked to a bunch of hoopers including Bilqis Adbul-Qaadir, Essence Carson, Layshia Clarendon, Shakyla Hill, Kelsey Bone, Monique Billings; footballers Eni Aluko and Nicole McClure; legendary Olympic sprinter Wyomia Tyus; softball superstar AJ Andrews and baseball’s Malaika Underwood; hammer thrower Gwen Berry; speed skater Erin Jackson; and volleyball player Simone Lee. That’s not even close to all of them but it gives you a taste of the many Black athletes who have come on the show. But instead it becomes a negative thing. I feel like that’s how humans have learned to look at differences in general...I feel like cycling is this micro version of the world because you have people from all over...doctors and delivery workers...the range is massive...people from all different cultures and colors and whatever and so it’s a big reflection of the world and it feels like a huge opportunity to teach some of these larger points that extend beyond cycling but use cycling as that commonality”28-barriers Ayesha has faced-understanding the confusing structure herself ,ignorance of others in regards to her humanity, explaining diversity, getting into a community’s bubble, angry people , people who are upset to be told they’re doing things wrong31-Double Consciousness, W.E.B Dubois“How much of myself can I be?”35- Ayesha-wants to create more opportunities for other people this yearFollow these accounts!@Allmountainbrothers@pedal2thepeopleAyesha doesn’t just want a black person to be used as an inclusivity project -she wants to show the diverse people who already come to the sport/ to show the people who are doing their thing already. Even at an early age, I can remember trying to stay up late on the weekends to watch scary movies and then get up early to get on my bike and ride to a nearby field to catch grasshoppers. My cousin and I had an evening pact that we would make - "first one to wake up, wakes up the other". We wanted to live as much of life as we could in 24 hours. Wanting to fit as much in in 24 hours is still a part of how I'm wired. Earlier in my career, I would find myself working until late at night and setting my alarm to get up early and put the final polish on a presentation or email. I would be wired from working on the computer late and self medicate with a sleep aid and a night cap to help knock me out, only to feel groggy and stressed out from the moment I woke up six hours later. Fast forward to a new phase in life, balance a career, family and my new lifestyle of endurance sports and now I'm trying to divide the 24 hours even further. Set the alarm for 4:30 to get to the pool when it opens at 5am. Out of the pool by 6:16 to drop off my daughters at school at 7. Shower and get to the office by 8 and get home by 6. After dinner, help out with homework. Get in a late run from 8-9. Read bedtime books with the girls until 10. Have a night cap, Ambien or both - knocked out by 11. 5.5 hours later, the alarm goes off at 4:30 am and the cycle continued. I first heard Kirk Parsley on the Unbeatable Mind podcast with Mark Divine. As you will hear in the interview, I was scared straight by some of the stats that he shared then and will share here in our interview.  Interview Introduction: In today's fast-paced, “hustle and grind” world, sleep is usually the first thing that gets cut from our schedules. But science is showing the impacts from chronic sleep deprivation are more far-reaching than we realize. Not only will a lack of quality rest affect your mood, feelings, and overall wellness, it can also degrade your memory, decision-making, life expectancy, and so much more. If we truly want to make drastic improvements to our mental, physical, and spiritual well-being, we must remedy our sleep habits and lifestyle... But who do we turn to for advice? Doc Parsley has been a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine since 2006 and has served as Naval Special Warfare’s expert on Sleep Medicine. He is certified in hormonal modulation (Age-Management Medicine), and continues to consult for multiple corporations, and professional athletes/teams. Kirk is the creator of the Doc Parsley Sleep Remedy sleep supplement, lectures worldwide on sleep, wellness, and hormonal optimization, and is the author of the internationally best-selling book, Sleep to Win. He has been featured on The Dr OZ Show, CBS, TED, LAVA, and the Unbeatable Mind podcast. Let's get smart on sleep with Dr. Kirk Parsley. Video of the Week: 4 freaking Leadville100 minutes    "What's New in the 303": Boulder’s Ryan Smith won the Leadville 100 trail run on Saturday night thanks to consistent second-half pacing that left his rivals unable to respond. It was the biggest win of his ultrarunning career. The Boulder-based runner, who came to the United States from the United Kingdom and works full-time a software engineer, was greeted at the finish by his wife and almost 2-year-old daughter. He turned 40 years old this year. His win — in 16 hours, 33 minutes, 25 seconds — was far from expected. Smith was not among the pre-race favorites to win, and he wasn’t feeling well leading into the Twin Lakes aid station near the 40-mile mark. But at the turnaround at Winfield, he held his pace steady, averaging around 10 minutes per mile for the rest of the race. Read more.   The Colorado Classic proved if you build it, they will come. Women came from all over the world to race in the Colorado Classic. We saw riders who showed that representation matters. Ayesha McGowan inspired others as she works toward her goal of becoming the first African-American professional road cyclist. Ayesha McGowan, also known as A Quick Brown Fox, is the first mainstream African-American female pro cyclist. And she's racing for more than just podium spots...it's about #RepresentationMatters. As the saying goes, just showing up is half the battle, but in her case, being present means having a presence that other people of color can relate to. She lets them envision themselves on the starting line, in the peloton, and, occasionally, on the podium. In this episode, we talk about why representation, diversity and inclusion matters. Not just in cycling, but of course that's our focus. It's a great conversation, and an important one that we hope you'll listen to all the way through...and then share it with as many friends and cyclists as you can. Ayesha McGowan came late to competitive cycling. An accomplished violinist, she didn’t enter her first organized biking event until after college. Despite riding an old steel bike with a milk crate on the back and wearing jean shorts in a peloton of spandex, she impressed the other women, who encouraged her to start competing. A year later, she took fifth place in her first race, then kept winning on the amateur circuit. Now she’s aiming to be the first African American female cyclist on the pro tour, and gets closer to that goal every day. In this second installment in a four-part series looking at inclusivity in outdoor communities, journalist James Edward Mills sits down with McGowan to talk about her fast road to success.

Howdy Joyriders! On this episode of The Joyride, I chat with the one and only Ayesha McGowan, who you may also know as A Quick Brown Fox. You may remember her name first mentioned by guest Monica Garrison, Founder of Black Girls Do Bike, back on episode #8 of the Joyride. Ayesha discovered competitive cycling in 2014 and has since been on a mission to become the first professional female african american road cyclist. Ayesha has been featured in Bicycling Magazine, Bicycle Times, BBC World, and Vice Sports. In other news, I want to give a quick shout out to Brock and Aaron of the Sprocket Podcast who kindly hosted me as a guest on their show last week. We talked about GirlEatsBike, Portland, and of course women on bikes. I had a lot of fun chatting with them and getting a behind-the-scenes look at how other podcasters make stuff happen. Link to that right here! I'm so excited about this show, folks. I've been following Ayesha for a while and am totally stoked to get to hear about her journey. On this episode of the Joyride we'll hear about Ayesha's evolution from commuting into advocacy and then competitive racing, using the bike to conquer your fears. inception of A Quick Brown Fox, as well as the Do Better Together rides, and why building community is so important. Here are a list of links to stuff discussed in this episode in no particular order: ally cats goldsprints WE bike NYC Kissena Velodrome Evie Stevens / Central Park  Ride Across Wisconsin Jens Voigt Skratch Labs And of course, Michael and Toby! This was rad. Big thanks to Ayesha for hanging out and sharing the bike love with us! ASK AYESHA here, or connect with her on the Instagram, or Twitter. Also, check out Ayesha co-hosting Fix It Black Jesus, a podcast which takes an unapologetic look at race and politics in today's America. Get woke. Friends, you know I believe in the transformative power of the bike, in our personal lives, our communities, and the world at large. I would be super grateful if you'd leave a rating or review in iTunes, Stitcher, or via whatever method you listen. It helps more gals find the show, and I believe the more stories we share, the more women who ride, we make this world - both our internal and external worlds - better with every revolution. Ratings and reviews help with that, but nothing is better than a personal referral, it'd be rad if you would share the show with even just one woman who you think might dig it. Remember, life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage. Keep moving forward and until next time I hope you enjoy the ride. Forever Forward, ~C
