Well this is a topic that is definitely close to my heart and I have experienced in such strong ways. I am so grateful that I was able to sit with Kristen Harding, a local mom and owner of PillarBox Gifts, to talk about how to "find ourselves" in the dense forest of motherhood. The pressures of motherhood have high standards where we feel this need to "mom so hard" all-the-time. It's easy to get a bit lost in that forest. Or very lost. On top of it we don't use our own compass to get to where we need to be- we look around at others and feel we should be where they are or do what they're doing. Trust me, I speak from experience. A piece of advice, you do not have to have the same journey as anyone else. Write your own story. But first- you have to connect with who you truly are beyond the role of a mother. How? Listen to this episode as Kristen and I share our stories and she gives incredible guidance and hope for a life where you can truly be happy and fulfilled on your terms. A bit more about Kristen: Kristen is a stay-at-home mom to an amazing little boy while running my own business doing something that she loves. Motherhood has inspired her to create a strong yearning for community and connection that she didn't have before. Kristen has a strong passion for art and creating and chose to use these skills to create gifts for other women as a means to show them how truly valuable and loved they are and to help create a community of women supporting women. Thank you so much for listening and sharing this episode with some friends. I hope that this episode can help you in some way and know I'm here if you ever want to connect and chat. Have you ever had something about yourself that you don't think is that big of deal, but when you share it, everyone else seems to think it is a big deal? That's Mike and me with drinking. Or not drinking, as the case may be. Our most popular episode of The Kate & Mike Show of 2019 BY FAR was the one we did about Sobriety, Substances, and Choosing to Live Awake (episode 137) in which Mike shared his sordid journey with drugs and alcohol, and I shared mine (not so sordid but still worth mentioning). That's why we're kicking off 2020 with back-to-back episodes on sobriety. Last week we talked with Holly Whitaker about our culture's f'd up relationship with alcohol and the ways in which the traditional, patriarchal structures of recovery don't serve everyone. This week we're back with an equally powerful episode with memoirist Laura McKowen about her journey with addiction, getting sober, and then falling deeply in love with her sober life. As Laura shares, she thought that sobriety was a sentence for a sad existence without fun or sex or truly living. Until her life required her to get sober and discover the truth: that sobriety is an invitation to a truer, more beautiful life, not a sentence. You don't have to want to get sober in order to get the gold from this episode, though I would totally cheer you on if you do! In the episode you'll hear: • What Laura did about the shame she was carrying from the things that happened while she was drinking • How we forgive ourselves for things we think are unforgivable • How to actually feel your feelings and why they won't kill you (and what opportunities lie on the other side) • About the beauty and possibilities of a sober life • Laura's story of getting a book deal (I always have to ask some business questions) I'm really excited for you to get to soak in the beauty and wisdom of Laura. :I was listening to two friends on a podcast talk about their journey with substances (drugs and alcohol), and then when I came home to have an editorial planning meeting with Mike about our podcast (which looks like me saying, "What do you want to talk about?" to him while we clean the kitchen) he said: Why don't we talk about alcohol and sobriety? Part of the reason our marriage works is because we have these glorious moments of being totally synced up (and then the other part of it is because we work at making it work). I'll be honest: I knew this conversation was a long time coming. I knew it would be powerful because Mike and I have somewhat unusual relationships with substances. What I did not expect is that it would be hard to hear about Mike's past. I assumed that because we've talked about his past with drugs and alcohol A LOT, I wouldn't have a hard time hearing him talk about it on this episode. I was wrong. Today's episode is pretty different than a lot of our other ones, but it's really important. You'll hear: • Why I wasn't alarmed when I first learned of Mike's history with making money in illegal ways (and why I actually thought it might bode well for our future). • What my parents taught me about alcohol and why it kept me from wanting to rebel by using it. • Mike's unconventional approach to getting clean that didn't involve ever setting foot in an AA meeting. • A few unsettling stories that, even though I'd heard them before, made my stomach turn. If you've ever struggled with substances, if any of your loved ones has or is, or if you're triggered at all by the idea of examining your relationship with alcohol or drugs, this is a must-listen episode. Through her company, WanderTours, Beth regularly leads trips to India, Papua New Guinea, Bhutan, Vietnam and Cambodia, Burma, Thailand and Laos, Bali and Java, Tanzania and Ireland. She also leads culinary tours through New Orleans, Santa Fe and her hometown, Seattle. Beth speaks regularly at events throughout the world, as well—all with the goal of inspiring would-be travelers into action to live a life that helps them become better versions of themselves. Beth Whitman is a true example of a woman who went for it, having completed the 25-day, 220-mile Snowman Trek in Bhutan—one of the most difficult treks in the world—not once, but twice. She has driven the AlCan Highway to Alaska twice, as well. She has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and reached the top at 19,341 feet. After telling herself she wasn't a runner, she ran her first marathon at age 50, completed five marathons that year, and then went on to run four back-to-back marathons over Thanksgiving weekend. That’s four marathons in four days in what's known as the Seattle Quadzilla. Welcome to episode 40! In this week's episode, we're chatting with Sarah Blondin who is the writer and creator of the transformational podcast, “Live Awake”. She spends her days, raising (and wrangling) her two young sons, in the countryside of British Columbia, Canada. She is currently writing her first book, due to release in the fall of 2019. After spending years disconnected and at odds with her inner self and world, Sarah moved from Vancouver, to rural BC-and took a deep dive within. Through years of introspection and quiet solitude, Sarah uncovered for the first time, her authentic writing voice, and connected with what she calls “ a mainline to her divine source of wisdom.” She found ways to allow her heart to guide and govern, and to override the fear and trepidation she had around being vulnerably open. Coming awake to the beauty she believes is intended for each of us, Sarah has dedicated her life to the pursuit of helping others find their feeling hearts again. She hopes that what she has gleaned through years of deep introspection, and meditation will assist listeners in turning toward themselves, and uncovering the great wealth carried within. Sarah Blondin is the founder, writer, videographer and podcast host for ‘Live Awake’. She lives with her beautiful son and husband in British Columbia, Canada. Moving out of the hustle and bustle of downtown Vancouver, BC to a remote piece of property outside Salmon Arm, BC Sarah began to pay close attention to her inner voice and write about it in her journal. Eventually, she ended up reaching people all over the world by recording her journal entries and turning them into meditations, creating Live Awake and putting them on the popular free meditation app, the Insight Timer.
