Mike Skill & The ROMANTICS– The Sound of '80s New Wave

A Breath of Fresh Air

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 2, 2025 52:00

The Romantics, a band synonymous with the vibrant energy of American rock and the catchy hooks of '80s new wave, havea story deeply rooted in the musical landscape of Detroit. At the heart of this narrative is Mike Skill, the band's founding lead guitarist and a principal songwriter, whose journey before and during his time with The Romantics showcases a blend of influences, adaptability, and a passion for music thatcontinues to resonate with audiences today. Mike Skill grew up on the east side of Detroit, a city pulsating with musical innovation. The '60s brought the British Invasion, with bands like The Kinks, The Who, The Beatles, The Hollies, and The Rolling Stones capturing the imagination of young musicians worldwide. Skill was no exception; he found himself captivated by the raw energy and melodic sensibilities of these British acts. This fascination wasn't just about the music—it was about the attitude, the style, and the revolutionary spirit that these bands embodied. But Detroit had its own musical heartbeat. The city was a melting pot of sounds, from the soulful rhythms of Motown to the gritty garage rock of local bands. Influences like the MC5, the Stooges, and early Bob Seger were instrumental in shaping Skill's musical outlook. He absorbed the sincerity, irony, spontaneity, and volume that characterised Detroit's late '60s rock scene, blending it with the melodic hooks of theBritish bands he admired. By the mid-70s, Skill was ready to channel his influences into something original. In 1977, he joined forces with Wally Palmar, Rich Cole, and Jimmy Marinos to form The Romantics—a name befitting their debut on the day of love. Their mission was clear: to create music that was fresh yet familiar, blending the infectious energy of British pop with the raw power ofAmerican rock. Detroit's music scene was both a challenge and aninspiration. The city was teeming with talent, and standing out required not just skill but also a unique identity. The Romantics distinguished themselves with their short hair, tailored suits, and high-energy performances. They favoured concise, punchy songs that got straight to the point—a reflection of both their punk influences and the pop sensibilities of the British Invasion. The Romantics' relentless gigging paid off and they recorded their self-titled debut album with British producer Pete Solley. Released in 1980, this album marked the dawn of a new decade and introduced the world to "What I Like About You." With its infectious beat and catchy chorus, the song became a defining track of the era. As the musical landscape shifted in the early '80s, the emergence of new wave brought synthesizers, polished production, and a more commercial sound to the forefront. The Romantics, rooted in garage rock and power pop, faced the challenge of evolving without losing their identity. Mike Skill's left the band after the 1980 release of "National Breakout." The lineup change coincided with the band's subtle incorporation of new wave elements into their music. Their 83 album, "In Heat," showcased this evolution, with tracks like "Talking in Your Sleep" blending their signature rock energy with the melodic hooks and production sheen characteristic of new wave. The song became one of their biggest hits. Despite lineup changes and the ebb and flow ofmusical trends, The Romantics have remained a constant presence in the rock scene. Mike Skill's return to the band in 2010 revitalised their live performances. The story of The Romantics, with Mike Skill's journey at its core, is the embodiment of the timeless spirit of rock music—a blend of passion, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to the craft. Want to bypass your standard train of thought and get unstuck? Sleep on it! We talk about how dreaming is a kind of supercharged brainstorming with today's guest Nicoline Douwes Isema who calls her work Thinking in Your Sleep. We start by talking about how when we are in a state of focused thinking, the brain can't do all of the maintenance things that it needs to do, plus it's not free to be creative! Enter the dreams which provided rich fields of creativity and brainstorming. Niko speaks about how we think our thoughts are linear and how thoughts help us decide what to do when actually thinking is more like a good press agent that explains what we just did. And did you know that intention setting can be as simple and as natural as worrying about a problem? Niko is passionate about dream sharing and gives simple steps that we can all do to support people when they share their dreams with us. Nicoline is very active on Clubhouse as @dreamexpert.

#252 Join the Facebook Group for men: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheGreatManWithin  Inquire about the Great Man Masterminds: Hello@DominickQ.com  --------------------------------   You may not always be able to control the quantity of sleep you get (see: parents of young children)… ….but you do have control over many of the factors that contribute to the quality of sleep you get. Today I'll give you 10 of those best practices. But first…   The 2 Components of Quality Sleep   For many years I found myself frustrated and confused by my seemingly chronic state of fatigue despite getting the requisite 7-8 hours of sleep.   What I found for me personally was 1/3 of the sleep equation was quality of sleep.   2/3 was the quality of sleep.   What I needed to first understand were the 2 components of quality sleep*:   *(Descriptions below from the Oura Ring sleep tracking app).   Deep Sleep: Deep sleep is the most restorative and rejuvenating sleep stage During deep sleep your muscles grow and repair Immune system is refreshed Brain flushes out toxins Usually, you get more deep sleep during the early stages of your sleep On average, adults spend 15-20% of total sleep time in deep sleep This % decreases with age over time   REM (Rapid Eye Movement Sleep): REM sleep is associated with dreaming, memory consolidation and creativity REM plays an important role in re-energizing your mind and body Typically, you get more REM sleep during the latter half of your sleep On average, the optimal amount for healthy adults starts from 1.5 hours but slightly decreases with age   The punchline was, I had no way of calibrating the quality of my sleep, but I suspected it was trash (turns out, it was).   So, when I learned how to impact the quality of my sleep – and how to measure it with the Oura Ring – naturally my sleep quality increased.   I started feeling more refreshed in the morning, fewer dips in the middle of the day, and fewer crash-landings early in the evening.      The 10 Practices to Enhance the Quality of Your Sleep     #1. Align Your Sleep Schedule with Your Circadian Rhythm (your body's natural sleep cycle)   In Dr. Matthew Walker's book Why We Sleep, he outlines the two biological forces that dictate when your body feels the need to sleep:   Your Circadian Rhythm “Sleep Pressure” via adenosine (more on this in best practice #9 below)   Your genetics determine your circadian rhythm.    In simplest terms, you're either a night owl or a morning person.   If your lifestyle is designed and aligned to support your circadian rhythms, life is good.   If not, it can have tragic consequences.   For example, in Why We Sleep, Dr. Walker talks about how night owl's get the serious short end of the stick based on society's value on “early to bed early to rise.”   Turns out night owls, in an effort to keep up with the societal norms, suffer from higher rates of anxiety, depression and stress related illnesses than morning people. Why? Because they go to bed later, get up earlier, sacrifice quantity and quality of sleep. Over the long haul this has serious consequences on physical, emotional and mental well-being.   #2. Establish a 90-Minute Bed Time Window   Your body wants to know when it's “sleep time” and when it's “wake time.”   If you're going to bed at dramatically different times every night (ie 9:00pm, 1:00am, 10:30pm), your body gets confused.   It eventually rebels and makes you tired when you're trying to do work, and awake when you're trying to sleep.   Establishing a regular 90-minute window – mine is 10:00pm to 11:30pm – which you can aim to hit 4-5 nights a week can train your body to naturally start to wind down on a more consistent basis.     #3. No Food in Your Last 1-2 Hours Before Sleep   It's as simple as this: if your body is expending energy breaking down the rack-o-ribs you just pounded, it's not able to invest its energy in deep sleep repairing your brain and flushing toxins.   Further, if you're eating sugary stuff – wine, ice cream or heavy carbs that get converted to glucose – the sugar spike will also kick you out of quality sleep.   Do your best to eat lighter at night, and to have your last bite of food     #4. Reduce Liquids Last 60-90 Minutes Before Bed.   If you're like me, drinking water before bed is a surefire way to wakeup 2-3 times during the evening. That always knocks me out of deep and REM sleep cycles.   Instead, I hydrate for my last time about 90 minutes before bed, allowing me to sleep straight through the night.   First thing I do when I wake up is drink a quart of lemon water to hydrate myself.     #5. No Screens in the Last 30 Minutes (Ideally 60-90 minutes)   I have 3 years worth of sleep data on my Oura Ring and the numbers don't lie:   On the nights when I'm doing 2 hour Zoom calls between 7-9:00pm, I get 33-50% less deep sleep than on the evenings when I'm not blasting my eye sockets with blue light. Power down the devices in the last 30-90 minutes of your night to increase your odds of getting higher quality sleep.   You can also consider Blue Light Blocker Glasses.     #6. Get a Sleep Tracking Device to Monitor Your Sleep Quality   In my opinion, one of the best investments you could ever make to your long term physical, mental and emotional well-being is in a high quality sleep tracking device.   It's critical to know which of your habits and behaviors are impacting the quality of your sleep.   My recommendation is the Oura Ring, which is $299.   While not inexpensive, I like to think about the impact on the years and decades of my future well-being (ie avoiding the time and financial costs of stress related illnesses).   It's the most respected sleep tracking device on the market (as endorsed by the NBA and used by many of the branches of the US Special Forces).   Note: I am not compensated by Oura in any way.   #7. Sleep in Cool Conditions   According to the NY Times:   Studies have found that in general, the optimal temperature for sleep is quite cool, around 60 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. For some, temperatures that fall too far below or above this range can lead to restlessness.   You can access the article here.   Also, I purchased the ChiliPad, which is like a heating blanket…but in reverse.   I was an over-heater at night, waking up 3-4 times a night in sweat. After buying the Chilipad, I sleep cool throughout the night.     #8. Sleep in Blackout Darkness   To get my full night of sleep, I typically wake at 6:30am. Where I live, the sun rises somewhere around 5:30-5:45am.   If I allowed the sun to wake me up, I'd shortchange 30-60 minutes of my later stage sleep cycle…which is where REM sleep resides.   Some people will install blackout curtains in their room.   I prefer a sleep mask like this $10 version on Amazon.     #9. Caffeine: Educate Yourself on How it Effects Your Sleep Quality   I'm a HUGE coffee guy and that's not changing anytime soon.   But I'm also very well-educated on the impacts of caffeine half-life on sleep quality.   In episode #520 of the Tim Ferriss Podcast, Michael Pollan talks about how the quarter-life of caffeine is 12 hours.   Meaning, if you had a cup of coffee at noon, ¼ of that caffeine is still in your system.   The sleep experts agree that this will mess with the quality of your sleep, specifically deep sleep.   Going back to Why We Sleep by Dr Matthew Walker, the two biological forces that dictate when your body feels the need to sleep:   Your Circadian Rhythm “Sleep Pressure” via adenosine   “Sleep pressure” is caused by a chemical named adenosine.   Here's the crash course on adenosine: From the moment you wake up, your body is producing adenosine The more adenosine that builds up, the sleepier you feel (hence the sleep pressure) Caffeine, however, blocks the adenosine receptor sites, so the adenosine has nowhere to go…but it remains in your system Caffeine has a long half-life (meaning, it takes 5-6 hours to eliminate half of the caffeine in your system) So, if you're drinking caffeine late in the day, you'll have a full day's build-up of adenosine but your body is still breaking down the caffeine   So what do I do about this? I finish my caffeine by 9:30-10:00am.   I know I'm still processing caffeine when I go to sleep, but I'm getting enough deep sleep and love my coffee enough to be cool with the tradeoff ;-)   I also do a quarterly caffeine detox.   Meaning, I'll take a 7-14 day hiatus from caffeine to flush my system of caffeine and all the adenosine that'd been built up in my system.     #10. Read Why We Sleep by Dr. Matthew Walker   Listen, if one of the most important factors for your short and long term physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being is the quality of your sleep…   …shouldn't you invest a few hours into educating yourself on one of the most well-respected pieces of literature on the subject?   If you liked Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, you'll enjoy Why We Sleep.     -DQ

Ahh, deep restorative sleep! What relief!  We all know how much better we feel after a good night's sleep.  But what happens when we are woken up throughout the night by disturbing nightmares and unsettling dreams?  Are we prepared with strategies for getting back to sleep or for addressing upsetting dream content when it surfaces?  What about repetitive nightmares that keep coming back?  How are we to deal with them?  Well, today's show looks at sleep interventions, as well as dream and nightmare strategies. I love this topic as it gives you the skills for looking closely at what surfaces through the dream content and what makes it so interesting and meaningful in your own healing journey. Whether it is tigers chasing you or workplace incidents, repeating the content is often symbolic or representative of what needs addressing, rather than reflective of the actual problems in your life.  For example, if in your life you are not getting along with a specific friend ... your dream content might show you in a boat floating away from shore into murky water and away from a house that represents your connections and safety.  You can see an array of animals growling on the shoreline as well as one cartoon character happily waving at you from one of the windows of the house.  You don't need to live close to water or even in a house in order for the dream to have meaning for you or to relate to the argument you are having with your friend. Nothing needs to be an exact replica if you look at the content through the lens of "everything is an aspect of you". In the example above, you are all elements.  You are the murky water, the house you are leaving behind, you are the boat and the feelings you have being on the boat.  You are all characters that you see.  Given time and introspection, you can begin to notice how each element relates to you and your life themes and events. Treatment for nightmares includes medications such as Prazosin, CBT therapy such as Image Rehearsal Therapy (or changing the ending) and dream journaling.  Deep breathing, relaxation practices and embedding the positive rather than fighting to get to sleep. Other approaches include: Sleep Hygiene Dream Journaling using a light pen Decoding Bad Dreams using Imagery Rehearsal Therapy Making Peace with your Sleep – do not fight to get back to sleep ... instead rest and breathe deeply Improve sleep with deep relaxation and embedding positive messages Using Guided Body Scan and Progressive Body Relaxation We also recognize that having a trauma history makes a person much more susceptible to bad dreams/nightmares.  This can be thematic such as dreams that reflect a certain type of experience (i.e., loss of an important person, violence against you or those you love, etc).  These thematic nightmares do not necessarily present an exact replica of what occurred in your life but can have features representative of a type of loss or trauma that still needs attention or healing in your life. Research indicates that trauma has been increasingly identified as a potential precursor to clinical insomnia (Sinha, 2016). Sleep quality disruption is one of many ways that trauma can have a significant and prolonged impact on health and well-being, and this is largely because of the ways in which trauma can sensitize the central nervous system to become more hyper-aroused. However, there are ways to mitigate this, improve sleep quality, and regulate the body's sleeping patterns again after trauma. An excellent article by Havens et al. (2019) outlines this research, and has informed some of the exercise guidelines below. Word of warning: you do not want to search for night hags if you are alone at night. Katie first heard about night hags and sleep paralysis from someone she met who experiences sleep paralysis. Dumbfounded by what she heard, she asked question after question and has since been on many internet pursuits to understand the phenomenon a little better. This week, she finally mustered the courage to Google Image search people's depictions of a night hag, which then led to her gaining a greater understanding of sleep paralysis and why it's associated with the supernatural. Sleep paralysis — waking up without being able to move or speak — can provoke feelings ranging from mild anxiety to outright terror. Because hallucinations often occur at the same time as the paralysis, this psychobiological experience feels supernatural to many people. Three tips here: Good Buy or Goodbye, Making Money in Your Sleep, and Interest Rates Aren't Why It's Time To Buy - Building Equity Is. When someone asks, “Is this property a good buy?” Or  “Should I be saying goodbye and invest elsewhere?”  It's not as easy as giving a quick yes or no. Most of the time there's not a straightforward answer because each person is starting from a different place have different long term or short term goals. So what is a great property for one isn't necessarily the best for someone else. ----more---- The single most considered factor of any investment is Cash Flow.  I am often asked, “What is a good cash flow?”. My answer is always the same...Positive. How much cash-flow is needed is subjective. Maybe you're living in the property and house hacking so you don't have to pay rent, or it could be a multi-unit that is cash-flowing so well it will pay itself off in 15 years instead of 30. Maybe it's earning just enough cash to cover the mortgage, insurance, taxes, and maintenance, and nothing more....but it's a long hold investment strategy...and that works too. With a positive highlight from this year being consistent low-interest rates, you may not realize how your home is working for you already. You may be making money in your sleep. And if you haven't purchased a home yet or refinanced the one you want to stay in, this is the time.  Align yourself with an experienced Realtor so they can help you realize your dream of owning real estate, or making more money in equity from the property you already own. Listen to this valuable round up to shift your thinking and start building wealth.

Though he is now a Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer, the British-born Roger Cook began his career in the UK, first making a splash on the US charts with The Fortunes’ Top 10 hit recording of “You’ve Got Your Troubles.” Additional US singles in that era included the Top 10 hits “Green Grass” by Gary Lewis & The Playboys, “I Was Kaiser Bill’s Batman,” by Whistling Jack Smith, and “Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again” by The Fortunes.  In 1972 Cook scored with two different versions of “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing,” an international hit that began as a groundbreaking commercial jingle for Coca-Cola before becoming a successful single for The Hillside Singers and then The New Seekers. Later that year he topped the charts with The Hollies’ “Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress).” He and longtime songwriting partner Roger Greenaway were named British Songwriters of the Year two years in a row for 1971 and 1972 at the Ivor Novello awards in the the UK. In the mid-1970s, Cook moved to Nashville, where he found success with a string of #1 hits, including BMI Country Song of the Year “Talking in Your Sleep” for Crystal Gayle, “I Believe in You” for Don Williams, and “Love is on a Roll,” a song co-written with John Prine that became another #1 for Williams. Additional chart-topping hits include ASCAP Country Song of the Year “One Night at a Time” and “I Just Want to Dance With You,” both #1 singles for George Strait. Roger’s songs have been recorded by The Drifters, Frankie Valli, Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, John Prine, Sonny & Cher, Chet Atkins, Nancy Wilson, Bette Midler, Petula Clark, Brenda Lee, Clint Black, Amy Grant, Reba McEntire, and others. He is a Grammy nominee, ACM nominee, three-time CMA Song of the Year nominee, and the only British inductee into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Additionally, he and Roger Greenaway were inducted into the national Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2009.

What’s the fastest way for most of us to get rich? By investing as much as we can as early as we can into a 401k. As a reader asks, though, what’s the best 401k for young adults? A Traditional 401k or a Roth 401k? Meet our young adult, Carter After listening to Queer Money™  episode 61, “5 Steps to Prepare for Financial Emergencies in Your Sleep,” Carter from Ohio emailed us a question. Carter wants to know, as a young gay man, which type of 401k offered to him by his employer is best? Should he invest in a Traditional 401K or a Roth 401K? There’s no blanket answer to this question. So, after we received Carter’s question, we asked him a few questions ourselves. Carter’s 27 years old and graduated college a few years ago. His current income is $43,000 a year and he has student loan debt financed at 3.5%. Carter has an emergency savings account set up per our instructions in Queer Money™  episode 61. He’s currently saving $40 a month in that emergency savings account and will have $500 in emergency savings by next July. What’s the difference between a Traditional vs. a Roth 401k? A Roth 401K is an employer-sponsored retirement account in which you contribute after-tax dollars and the money you invest in that account grows tax-free. Withdrawals from this account are, also, tax-free. A Traditional 401k is an employer-sponsored retirement account in which you contribute pre-tax dollars that grow tax sheltered. Withdrawals from a Traditional 401k are, unlike with a Roth 401k, taxed as ordinary income upon withdrawal. The annual contribution limit for both Traditional and Roth 401ks is the lower of 100% of your income or $18,000 for 2018. Additional contributions of up to $6,000 can be made into either type of account if you’re currently over 50 years old. Calculate your retirement income with this simple calculator Moneychimp Calculator What’s the best 401k for young adults like Carter? As with most things in life, it depends. Ultimately Cater and all of us who invest in a 401k (or a 403b for government employees) is, do I want to pay my taxes now or when I’m retired? You ultimately want to pay the least amount of taxes possible. Will that be when you’re younger or when you’re older? Will taxes be the same, higher or lower than they are today? No one can answer these questions with total certainty. Therefore, some professionals recommend hedging your bets and investing in both a Traditional and a Roth 401k. Investing a portion in both reduces your risk of incorrectly guessing which way taxes will go by the time you retire and still let you benefit today from the benefits of investing into a 401k. To hear our best recommendation for the best 401k for a young adult such as Carter, listen to this episode of Queer Money™ .
