Chapter 1: Summary of Simplicity Parenting"Simplicity Parenting" by Kim John Payne and Lisa M. Ross presents a compelling approach to parenting that emphasizes the importance of simplifying a child's environment and daily life to foster emotional well-being and resilience. The authors argue that modern culture's focus on busyness, over-scheduling, and materialism can overwhelm children, leading to stress and anxiety. The book outlines four key areas for simplification:1. Environment: Create a calm and orderly physical space by reducing clutter and distractions. A simplified environment can help children feel more secure and focused.2. Rhythm: Establish consistent daily and weekly rhythms, which provide a sense of security and predictability. This structure helps children know what to expect and reduces anxiety.3. Information: Limit the amount of information and media exposure. The authors encourage parents to be mindful of the content and quantity of what children consume, advocating for less screen time and more engaging, time-honored forms of play and learning.4. Choices: Reduce the number of choices children have to make, which can overwhelm them. Instead, offer limited, manageable options that help children feel empowered without feeling burdened.Payne and Ross emphasize that by simplifying these aspects of life, parents can help create a nurturing and supportive environment that enables children to thrive emotionally and socially. The book provides practical strategies and insights to guide parents in implementing these principles, ultimately fostering deeper connections within families and promoting healthier development for children.Chapter 2: The Theme of Simplicity Parenting"Simplicity Parenting: Using the Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier, and More Secure Kids" by Kim John Payne and Lisa M. Ross advocates for a minimalistic approach to parenting and childhood that emphasizes the benefits of simplicity. Here are key ideas and themes from the book: Key Points:1. The Overstimulation of Modern Childhood:- The book discusses how children today face overwhelming amounts of information, activities, and material possessions. The authors argue that this overstimulation can lead to anxiety, behavioral issues, and diminished creativity.2. Four Key Principles of Simplicity Parenting:Payne and Ross outline four essential areas to simplify:- Environment: Creating a calming and organized physical space by reducing clutter and distractions.- Rhythms: Establishing predictable daily routines that provide structure and security for children.- Schedules: Allowing unstructured playtime and freedom from excessive extracurricular activities to encourage creativity and independence.- Filtering Information: Moderating the types of media and information children are exposed to, ensuring it is age-appropriate and not overwhelming.3. Importance of Safe Spaces:- The authors emphasize the need for children to have safe, nurturing environments where they can express themselves and explore their interests without fear of judgment.4. Connection Over Control:- They advocate for a parenting style that prioritizes emotional connection and understanding over strict discipline or control, fostering a supportive relationship between parents and children. Character Development:While "Simplicity Parenting" does not have characters in a fictional sense, the concept of character development can be linked to:- Parent Growth: The book suggests that parents should reflect on their own values and behaviors. As parents work through the simplification process, they may develop greater...

In the season 5 finale, the Mama's discuss the book, Simplicity Parenting by Kim John Payne. Listen as they dscuss the book and how it has affected each of their lifes, even beyond parenting.
“A mother's love liberates.” —Maya AngelouOur kids' teen years can be a struggle and a disruption, or they can be the medicine we need to connect to our kids AND our purpose. What does talking about this have to do with what we do around here? Many of us plan for the physical hours of mothering in the early years, but we rarely consider the time it takes to process the mental load of the later years.Listen in for all the details. Read the post for the basic idea.A few years ago Sil Reynolds and I created a container for a group of mamas for five weeks. Sil offered us this definition of motherhood, “Allowing our kids to become themselves.” I love this definition for mothering kids of all ages, and it helps me understand what has worked and what has not. Our job is not to be perfect. Our kids grow as much from what we do right as what we do wrong. Openness to evolve has been most helpful.I believe the work is ours, and often we make it about our kids.I did a lot of work on parenting in the early years that led to work on family values, family meals, less stuff. We loved the work of Kim John Payne who wrote a book called Simplicity Parenting that led to fewer toys and activity and no media. It was actually the foundation for what became Plan Simple Meals. It was simple at the beginning. As our kids became tweens and then teens, it got harder for me and my husband to agree, because we each got triggered in different ways.My experience of helping my teen who was really suffering two years ago started like one would expect. Hours combing through therapists. Daily emails to colleagues and friends who might have ideas. It was one deadend after another, until I totally surrendered.I saw the gift that was in front of me not only to help her, but to heal generations before and after us. I saw my responsibility in the situation. I saw the only way I could tap into my mama instinct in this extreme situation was to be 100% present. Sometimes that looked like sitting with her for 3 hours patiently waiting for her to eat. I started to see the connection between me being ok when she was not and her getting better. I danced with her. I hugged her often. I held my tongue hourly, and sometimes presence had me walking out the door alone.I didn't talk about this at first. I wanted to protect my kids and to make sure I was healed too, but this phase, these challenges of motherhood kept coming up in our weekly FLOW365 calls. I wasn't the only one spending hours looking for a tutor or therapist while not getting work done or having things fall apart at home. I wasn't the only feeling like I wasn't taking care of my body because I was taking care of something else.Often we think that parenting teens is less intensive than parenting younger kids, but really things just shift. Our teens still need us, but in different ways. Our role is still to allow our kids to become themselves, and that doesn't mean stepping back. The world really wants you to parent from the outside, but this phase needs you to source from the inside. Here are 3 keys that have helped me LOVE being the mom of 3 teens (and they are still working as I move into the parent of a young adult too!).Listen. Kids want to be heard. When your teen opens up to you, try to listen without jumping to conclusions, judging them, or even trying to come up with a solution (unless you are asked). It's hard to listen without fixing, but it builds trust and encourages them to come to you in the future. How can you listen? Each kid is different, but try: Going for a walkDuring car ridesWhile cooking or doing other things around the houseSaying goodnight, sometimes this end of the day opens them upHow do you listen without fixing? My daughter and I danced...

Well this is a topic that is definitely close to my heart and I have experienced in such strong ways. I am so grateful that I was able to sit with Kristen Harding, a local mom and owner of PillarBox Gifts, to talk about how to "find ourselves" in the dense forest of motherhood. The pressures of motherhood have high standards where we feel this need to "mom so hard" all-the-time. It's easy to get a bit lost in that forest. Or very lost. On top of it we don't use our own compass to get to where we need to be- we look around at others and feel we should be where they are or do what they're doing. Trust me, I speak from experience. A piece of advice, you do not have to have the same journey as anyone else. Write your own story. But first- you have to connect with who you truly are beyond the role of a mother. How? Listen to this episode as Kristen and I share our stories and she gives incredible guidance and hope for a life where you can truly be happy and fulfilled on your terms. A bit more about Kristen: Kristen is a stay-at-home mom to an amazing little boy while running my own business doing something that she loves. Motherhood has inspired her to create a strong yearning for community and connection that she didn't have before. Kristen has a strong passion for art and creating and chose to use these skills to create gifts for other women as a means to show them how truly valuable and loved they are and to help create a community of women supporting women. Thank you so much for listening and sharing this episode with some friends. I hope that this episode can help you in some way and know I'm here if you ever want to connect and chat. Here we go with part 2 – What's the kid's responsibility and what's the parent's responsibility? How much do we need to tell our kids, and how to gauge whether to say something to our kids ("is it true/kind/necessary and will it help your child feel secure?"). We talk about stories from Kim John Payne's book, including the story of a mom going to a new park with their 2 year old, and how a group of parents in New York fell into the "peer-parenting" trap. We talk about how to stop a kid from interrupting, from making unreasonable demands, and how to ultimately recognize the best in our kids instead of pointing out things we don't like.Simplicity Parenting by Kim John Payne

Right now, the average amount of time that kids are spending outside is four to seven minutes. But the data shows that the amount of time they should be spending outside for their brain development, for their growth, for critical thinking skills, for leadership should be four to seven hours. And the average amount of time that kids today are spending on devices is four to seven hours. We have it completely backwards and if you're an entrepreneur who is raising kids, this is an episode you have to hear. This is one of my all time favorite interviews on this show. My guest today is a good friend of mine, Ginny Yurich. Ginny is the Founder of 1000 Hours Outside and the entire premise of Ginny's movement, and her company is really propelling kids to get outside and experience all the beauty that nature has to offer and the benefits that it has on their growth and their leadership. In today's conversation, we go over the birth of this movement and how it came to be so organically for Ginny and how the pain in her life as a mother really propelled her into where she was being led. Ginny also gives strategic, tactical steps on how you can do this too and explains the way she brought her kids into the business and the benefits of entrepreneurship for her family. So there's practical wisdom in today's episode, not to mention the fact that she's just a wealth of knowledge around so many different things. Can't wait for you to hear this one! As you all know I absolutely love hearing from you all, and so many good questions are coming my way these days that I figured now is the perfect time to offer my responses. While some of these questions are specific to the pandemic and all that it entails, the answers, as you'll see, offer information and advice that are beneficial at any time. I'll start by further exploring the ‘Govern, Garden, Guide' concept which we have looked at in the past, and also share some strategies about ending the use of pacifiers and thumb sucking. Other questions I look at are regarding children who are still experiencing difficulty dealing with the restrictions that the pandemic has generated, addressing both typical and violent tantrums, teaching kids to be able to laugh things off, and instilling a good attitude in children. The topics may seem wide ranging, but woven through them all is the desire to provide our children with the strong foundation they need to enjoy strong and rewarding relationships throughout their lives. Let me tell you, there's definitely something in today's episode for everyone. The Finer Details of This Episode: · Simplicity Parenting by Kim John Payne is one of my favorite parenting books · It's developmentally inappropriate to try to guide a toddler · You make your toddler feel safe by bonding, setting the rules and boundaries, and letting them know that you've ‘got them' · If your child is having tantrums, you have to look at your governing and your boundaries for firmness and consistency · If a child feels unsafe, it yields poor behavior · It is very important to lay this foundation from 0-6 for future years · If you wait until teen years to discipline, you are fucked · Ending pacifier use can be a matter of just taking it away or slowly cutting a bit of a hole in it over the period of a couple weeks which reduces its ‘big suck' appeal · Before employing techniques such as putting a nasty tasting lotion on the thumb or putting a mitt on a child's hand to stop thumb sucking, check in with your dentist · For children who still don't understand the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, check in on how you talk about the lockdown – ex. saying ‘I get to' rather than ‘I have to' · Kids forget and kids are resilient · We are over-socialized – the true extrovert is very rare · We need to transition our children back into social situations gradually from this ‘lockdown' · The child who is very dysregulated in the house has to go to their room to learn to self-regulate – it's respectful to let them have their big feelings in there · Revisit the ‘Go to Your Room Strategy' podcast · Attitudes are caught – watch what you are modeling when showing your child how to laugh things off, help others out, handle angry moments, lose graciously, etc. Quotes: “You can't guide a toddler, you have to govern.” “It's pure brain development.” “Crappy behavior is often your child asking you to say, ‘No'.” “You're laying the foundation for the beauty of the relationship later.” “Discipline is like teaching…and you can teach very simply by following through.” “If your child is still pining for everyday life that was in February, there's a culture in your house that is producing that.” “Everything we do or say is teaching.” “If you have a shitty attitude and you don't shake things off, you know that's like you speaking French in the house and expecting your child to just learn English – they're going to do what you do.” Links: Jamie's homepage - http://www.jamieglowacki.com/ Oh Crap! The first years of a baby's life can feel anything but simple. While their needs are few, namely love, food, sleep, and play, parents often feel pressure to provide the absolute best on these fronts. The best food. The best sleep. The best play. We are told that to accomplish this by doing more: more playdates, more lessons, more outings, and more variety on the table. Jessica Rolph is joined by Kim John Payne on today's episode to help us question this approach. He is the author of the best-seller Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier, and More Secure Kids and he has also written: The Soul of Discipline: The Simplicity Parenting Approach to Warm, Firm, and Calm Guidance — From Toddlers to Teens and Being at Your Best When Your Kids Are at Their Worst: Practical Compassion in Parenting. I think you're going to listen to this one twice. Maybe three times. I cried while editing it and I can hardly believe I got to speak with Kim John Payne a second time. Payne's newest book, Emotionally Resilient Tweens and Teens launches this week and it left me slack-jawed. Like all of Payne's other books, he covers so many pressing topics in both practical and memorable ways and then, in these conversations, he somehow is able to expound even more. In just sixty minutes we cover the crucial topic of family being a safe harbor and how as a lot of the structures of the past fall away we have to step up and strengthen the family base camp. We cover bullying - in all forms including online, exclusion, teasing, and more and the ways to coach kids through. Bullying doesn't just affect one child, it affects the entire family. We discuss "turning down the faucet" instead of spending childhood mopping up the spillage. We talk about rites of passage in other cultures and the ways in which those are related to enduring ongoing social turbulence. Payne shares a secret near the end... and it's a good one. We had the conversation and I took notes. I listened back to edit it and I took notes. It's just so good. A golden nugget of my parenting years. The things we can teach our tweens, teens and even younger children about being emotionally resilient will help us as well in our adult lives. There aren't many books I recommend having on your shelves as reference, but this is definitely one. When kids have adult-directed activities filling every nook and cranny of their childhoods, they lose the ability to be a self-starter. They miss out on key developmental periods where the experiences of simple play help them learn to be creative and adaptable. Kim John Payne (author of Simplicity Parenting and many other books) co-wrote a book called "Beyond Winning: Smart Parenting in a Toxic Sports Environment" with Luis Fernando Llosa and Scott Lancaster and it probably wouldn't have been a book I would've initially picked up but Kim introduced us to Luis and I'm so thankful the path of my life led me to this book. It is filled with rich parenting and life insights. While youth sports culture is sufficiently covered, so are a considerable amount of other topics that are timely and needed for today's parents. We discuss the power of play, boredom, the upcoming job market, the gift of anticipation, peer mentoring, learning for mastery, how to respond to loss and failure, what should define success in childhood and in life, and more! Beyond Winning went right to the top of my list as a favorite parenting book. Today on The AMPLIFY Show, I'm welcoming back Kim John Payne, a counselor, researcher, and the author of eight books about children. He was one of the first guests on this show, and I highly recommend going back and listening to that interview in Episode 6 if you like this one! Last time, we talked about his 2009 book Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier, and More Secure Kids. In this interview, we talk about two big topics that have changed for parents since Simplicity Parenting was released, and why he added them as new sections when he rewrote the book in 2019. We also chat about emotional resiliency - how to manage our own emotions and model that for our kids - which he dives deep into in his upcoming book Emotionally Resilient Tweens and Teens. And he shares a really troubling condition that more and more kids are experiencing, which is a complete detachment from parents, and the really scary damage that can happen to the parent-child relationship when the parent is too attached to their phone. If you're a parent, I think you're going to love this interview. And be sure to check out some of Kim's books, which are linked below and available on his website. My guest today is none other than Kim John Payne, a child and family counsellor, consultant, educator, researcher and the author of the number one bestseller, ‘Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Happier, Calmer, More Secure Kids'. Kim says that our faster, busier society today is ‘waging an undeclared war on childhood', of too much ‘too much stuff, too many choices, too much sexiness, too much information, and too much speed'. And while we don't have the power to change the more, louder, faster world around us, we do have the power as parents, Kim says, to ‘declare peace in our homes'. Today's is such a hopeful episode, because it's about the choices that we get to make, as parents, to give our children a childhood in a time when this is no longer a given. Kim and I talk about: How average kids without any obvious history of trauma are experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, just as a result of the cumulative stress of living in the 21st century world The work of ‘simplicity parenting' that Kim developed to help families consciously wind back the different sources of stress in children's lives, through: Decluttering our children's environment Bringing warm, nurturing rhythms and rituals into our children's days Balancing our little one's schedules Filtering out adult information (because it's not just too much stuff that's overwhelming for children - it's also the clutter of too much information) And creating values-centered family leadership, and fostering a family culture that truly reflects our values and our desires. If you enjoy today's episode, it would mean the world to me if you left me a review over on iTunes, because that helps to get this podcast in front of other wild mamas who could also benefit from these conversations. As parents, we may want to shield our children from any pain or sadness they may face, but if we're honest with ourselves, we know this is impossible. So rather than fighting the inevitable, our children are better served if we work to help them understand how to weather the storm, to equip them with tools so they're capable of processing and working through the full range of emotions life has in store for them. Joining me today is Kim John Payne, author of several books, including the number 1 Best Seller Simplicity Parenting. This episode is overflowing with Kim's time-honored guidance for raising healthy children who feel confident to explore and create, as well as mindset shifts to make ourselves that can help us to be more present and allow us to truly enjoy the journey. I've been sharing some of our most downloaded episodes of all time here on The AMPLIFY Show, and this week is my interview with author Kim John Payne. He's well known for his best-selling book Simplicity Parenting, which is my favorite parenting book and one I've reread multiple times. He has worked with children and families around the world as a counselor and educator. As an author, he's given a voice to people like you and me. People who have this feeling that something is not okay about this new normal of overwhelm, doing more, being more… and this fast-paced life with too much stuff, too many choices, and too little time. In this interview, we talk about strategies like de-escalating with humor, re-entering family life after you've had a long day of work, and things like a child-centered home vs. a value-centered home. I hope to talk with him again hopefully in my upcoming season in the new year… so excited to tell you more about that soon. In today's episode we're talking all things motherhood, forgiveness and healing. We're talking about spiritual parenting - from planning the astrological sign of your child (or attempting to!), to mystical approaches to learning including a conversation about Waldorf education. We're also discussing the eating disorder recovery process - something that my guest and I have both experienced. My guest is Prim Ormanovich a mother, author, and Waldorf teacher. She recently published her first book of poetry, "knotted" which captures her journey through a chaotic childhood, eating disorder recovery, sexual abuse, motherhood, forgiveness and healing. Prim is a long time blogger and podcaster, who started out writing about eating disorder recovery and intuitive eating as a way to advocate for people through a “Health At Every Size” lens. She currently runs a motherhood podcast with our good friend (and previous guest!) Karsyn DuPree, where they discuss all things woo woo parenting. Prim is currently undergoing Coach Training with Lightyear Leadership to further develop herself as a spiritual leader and to help people hone the power of their language, and attention, to set goals and a vision for their life.
