This week on the Eurogamer Newscast, we look ahead at 2025 on PlayStation 5, in the wake of last night's State of Play. If you tuned in for big games, you were well served. But if you wanted to see exclusive first-party PlayStation titles... well, it's clear there's something of a lull right now in Sony's pipeline. It makes for an interesting 2025 for Sony's console, which is set to benefit from Microsoft's cross-platform publishing push ramping up to new levels, just as PlayStation itself cancels several in-development live-service projects. And while the reveal of Saros, the next game from Returnal developer Housemarque, was a welcome high point of last night's show, it won't arrive until 2026. It seems likely we'll see Bungie's Marathon this year on PS5, alongside PlayStation's other confirmed big hitters: Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei. Fairgame$ hasn't been cancelled yet, and there's a chance Marvel's Wolverine makes it before 2026 too. But stack them against Age of Empires 2, Age of Mythology Retold, Forza Horizon 5, The Outer Worlds 2, Ninja Gaiden 4, Ninja Giden 2 Black and whatever else from Xbox's back catalogue Microsoft seems poised to confirm - and PlayStation Studios' plans for the year only seem quieter. Joining me this week to discuss all of that are Ed Nightingale and Victoria Kennedy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Another wild week in Video Games with another move in the "no fences and no red lines" from Microsoft as Forza Horizon 5 the multiple award-winning title from Playground Studios, is headed to the PlayStation 5, and you can go wishlist it now. At this point, does it even move the needle for those like Sean and Marc, who witness this every day? But it certainly seems PlayStation players are excited and that's what matters in the end. Speaking of Sony, they made some moves at the top by promoting a new CEO of all of the company and also moving Hideaki Nishino to the top of Sony Interactive Entertainment while Hermen Hulst stays at his position at PlayStation Studios. Does this really mean much? And will it bear fruit in the near future or is it something we won't see until maybe the PlayStation 6 is around? Plus, Sean's been playing Big Helmet Heroes, Marc's been playing Sniper Elite Resistance, EA downsized Bioware a week after the news of Dragon Age: The Veilguard's lackluster sales, Need For Speed is on hold again, Sony drops the PSN Requirement for several PC games, Multiversus is officially ending, and more! You can also watch this episode in video form on the W2M Network Youtube Channel, please give us a like, comment on the episode, and give the channel a subscribe and follow as well: https://youtube.com/live/xSZXgTR7vTIListen as a podcast and give us a review on these platforms... WE DID IT! WE MADE IT TO 350! That's right 350 episodes in the can! Who would've thought? Not me, well not really. Anyway we still got news! The Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially revealed, despite the lame name. Netflix is jacking up prices again...meanwhile the industry is hoping Rockstar charges $100 for GTA 6, here's hoping they don't. Ryan gosling may be heading to a galaxy far, far, away, and the spider-verse is going to be farther away.
We had already finished this recording when surprising news broke in the world of PlayStation: Sony has cancelled two of its upcoming, unannounced games. And -- would you believe it? -- they were both live service titles, including a God of War spin-off. The really unfortunate news, however, is who was making these titles: Bend and Bluepoint, two smaller AAA teams that typically work on a single project at a time, thus wasting years of development, as well as time and resources that can never be recovered. What in the world is going on with PlayStation Studios, and how did the person who helmed the first party family during such a tumultuous period of greenlights and plug-pulling ascend to the top of PlayStation itself? It's time to start asking some really hard questions. Other news this week includes substantial rumors of more Xbox content en route to PlayStation which, if true, will make Microsoft the single most-prolific producer of content for a platform that was once its arch-rival, but no longer. Also: Reactions to the first Until Dawn film trailer, a surprising end to Rocksteady's Suicide Squad game, accolades for an exceptional-looking upcoming vampire RPG called The Blood of Dawnwalker, tantalizing news about Bungie's in-development Smash Bros.-inspired MOBA, and more. We wrap up our episode (as we always do) with listener inquiries. Now that Nintendo's Switch 2 has been revealed, what are our preliminary thoughts? Is 2025 the year we finally give PSVR2 the respect it deserves? Why is it so hard to make swimming control well? Is it just a weird coincidence that SEGA renewed its Ecco the Dolphin trademark on September 11, 2001, or is there something deeper at play? This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. We finally know who will play Baylan Skoll after the death of Ray Stevenson. Ubisoft is facing an uncertain future, and Nintendo's is coming into view. LEGO wants to enter the handheld console market, and Marvel Rivals wants to keep adding heroes. Sonic and Mario are battling over new territory, the box office. Any Muschietti misses the mark, while Daredevil hits the bullseye. That and more, come take a listen.
The Golden Globes came and went, Shogun wrapped up, and we might have a greater picture of how the Oscars might play out this year. Plus NVIDIA and AMD come out swinging at CES. Sony wants to adapt more of their gaming IPs and Activision is spending a lot on Call of Duty, are we really surprised though? Squid Game 2 wows with its intensity, Will Smith is teasing something with the Matrix and LA is burning, literally.
Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes Last week, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Jason Momoa, the actor who famously played the title role in the billion-dollar grossing Aquaman film, has signed on to portray the character Lobo in the upcoming DC Studios film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Momoa, no stranger to Warner Bros or DC, has long been campaigning for the role of the intergalactic biker bounty hunter who first debuted in comics in 1983. Elsewhere, filmmaker Matt Reeves, broke his silence on The Batman II delay situation while attending the Golden Globes this weekend, saying, “I can tell you that we'll be shooting this year. We're doing something where the story continues from, but I hope that people will be surprised by.” During a recent interview with GQ, Andrew Garfield, the Amazing Spider-Man himself, dispelled rumors that he has signed on to reprise his role in the upcoming fourth Marvel Studios' Tom Holland-led Spider-Man film. Ever self-aware, the actor acknowledged the weight his objections hold, given his track record, having been in the exact situation prior to No Way Home's release, saying, “I'm gonna disappoint you - Yeah, no. But I know no one's gonna trust anything I say from now on.” We might be light on Marvel news this week, but Sunday evening's 82nd Golden Globes Awards ceremony saw many an MCU friend and foe in attendance. Kathryn Hahn was nominated for her role in Agatha All Along, Sebastian Stan was twice nominated and won once, and Captain America Brave New World stars, Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford took the stage to present an award, as did MCU alumni Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum. Now that you got your Marvel fix, let's talk about some winners and snubs: on the TV side of things, the winners circle featured usual suspects – FX's Shogun and The Bear, still being awarded as a comedy despite the protests, Max's Hacks, and newcomer Baby Reindeer from Netflix snagging a couple of wins. Also worthy of note: Colin Farrell, narrowly avoiding a snub, took home the sole award for HBO's The Penguin. Netflix and A24 ruled the evening as far as film is concerned, with Emilia Perez and The Brutalist being highly awarded, although Wicked refused to be relegated to the sidelines, taking home the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award. Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King led the first weekend of the new year with $23.8 million domestically, reaching $476.4 million globally. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 followed closely with $21.2 million in the U.S. and a worldwide total of $336.3 million. Tom Holland and Zendaya are engaged – as revealed by the ring she wore during the Golden Globes Red Carpet Peacock is developing a film reboot of the 2011 NBC series Grimm, with Drop Dead Diva creator Josh Berman writing and executive producing alongside the original show's co-creators and showrunners. HBO has released a new short teaser trailer for The Last of Us season 2 and confirmed that the series will begin streaming in April. Sony has announced a movie adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn in collaboration with PlayStation Studios and Columbia Pictures, the studio behind 2022's Uncharted. While no release date has been set, the film will bring Guerrilla Games' post-apocalyptic adventure starring machine hunter Aloy to the big screen. Jacob Elordi is in early negotiations to replace Paul Mescal in Ridley Scott's The Dog Stars. Mark L. Smith and Christopher Wilkinson wrote the script for the 20th Century Studios film, which adapts Peter Heller's 2012 apocalyptic novel of the same name. Disney+ has greenlit a pilot for a TV series adaptation of Louis Sachar's beloved novel "Holes." The project follows in the footsteps of Disney's 2003 film version of the book, though no further details about the potential series have been revealed yet.

Plus, the team continues to feature listener and developer opinions on their favorite PlayStation memories. We'll continue to feature listeners and developers (and name our favorite PS Vita, PS4, and PS VR games!) leading up to PlayStation's 30th anniversary on December 3.
The industry was recently set alight by a pair of articles from newswire Reuters indicating that Sony is interested in buying Japanese media conglomerate Kadokawa Corporation, and indeed, Kadokawa itself has since confirmed the reporting. Such a move has massive implications for Sony's increasing dominance in the anime and manga spaces, and it's likely this attempt at M&A is squarely focused on that first and foremost. But acquiring Kadokawa could be a huge boon for the PlayStation brand, too, considering it owns the likes of Spike Chunsoft and Acquire, and perhaps most importantly a controlling share in FromSoftware, too, the prolific studio behind Elden Ring, Bloodborne, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Armored Core, Sekiro, King's Field, and more. Should Sony nab Kadokawa, does that mean FromSoft would join PlayStation Studios as a proper first party team? Could further emphasizing Sony's Japanese identity provide a valuable path forward for PlayStation? Other news this week includes fresh PlayStation 6-related rumors, word out of Square Enix concerning Final Fantasy VII Remake: Part III and a potential 2D-HD version of Final Fantasy VI, PlayStation Portal's awesome upgrade to allow cloud gaming without PS5, and more. Per usual, we wrap things up with inquiries from our beloved audience. What are our thoughts on this year's iteration of Geoff Keighley's Game Awards? Which difficulty settings are most appealing to us in the titles we play? How does Colin deal with any negative feedback surrounding the games he writes? In one listener's quest to invite another to be his Best Man, could it be that their shared romance is the real story? It's now obvious that Sony shouldn't have purchased Bungie back in 2022, but considering the transaction did indeed occur, both parties have to make the best out of a less-than-promising situation. After instituting a significant reduction in headcount, poaching key employees for posts within PlayStation proper, and even swiping an entire team and drafting it into PlayStation Studios, Sony has made another play, ingesting Bungie's Creative Studios to help shepherd the wider brand's future service games. How will this entire ordeal play out in the end? We're years away from finding out, but that doesn't stop us from speculating. Plus: Spider-Man 2 is getting a Nixxes-led PC port in early '25, Amazon Prime's God of War project receives a massive personnel overhaul, a recent interview with Guerrilla has some fans longing for more Killzone, and more. We wrap things up (as always) with listener inquiries. Have we reached a dead end with game design? Are 60 frames plenty, or should we ultimately strive for 120? How might Sony celebrate PlayStation 2's 25th anniversary next year? Are we able to convince a skeptical fan that -- yes, indeed! -- 'tchotchke' is a real word? Learn more about your ad choices. In this newsletter:* Podcast episode with Kristie J. Fisher, PhD, the Sr. Director of Global User Research, PlayStation Studios.* Guide to designing a GenAI product: From vision to content strategy* Poll for the AI communityThe biggest challenge facing AI products isn't whether they would use your product, it's whether you're delivering reasons to convince them to switch from their existing solution. This is extra difficult when leveraging an emerging technology, like GenAI, because of key factors:* GenAI tools ask users to give up control and have faith that the system knows what's right—the exact opposite of what we've been training users to expect from productivity tools* GenAI is still nascent and doesn't always get it right, meaning that in some situations it will deliver an inferior output (and need to be re-prompted)* Users quickly run out of ideas about what to prompt because they don't know what the tech is capable ofSo as much as product teams can focus on the incremental delivery of value to users, those efforts are likely to fail because we're asking users to take a leap of faith. Something that users, especially B2B and enterprise, don't want to do.Thanks for reading Design of AI: News & resources for product teams! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. That's why this week's episode with Kristie J. Fisher, PhD was so fascinating. Having worked on launching new products and features at XBox, Google, and Playstation, she has learned how to dive deeper into the psyche of users and gamers. In there is the secret to making a product enjoyable: defining metrics to ensure a user's time is well spent. When building and researching we must be committed not only to delivering value, but ensuring that the experience is enjoyable and worth changing your workflows for. So when building your GenAI product, always create evaluative metrics for the level of impact. The higher you score, the more likely a switch. It also offers and opportunity to qualitatively investigate where and how the impact is happening so you mine valuable product ideas.

The next PlayStation Studios game in the pipeline is Concord, and we're all interested to see how it pans out. But by opening up its imminent beta weekend to all PS+ subscribers instead of those who pre-ordered the game, it's obvious that the pre-release energy for this title simply isn't there. Will a mass of people going hands-on change its trajectory? Or do things seem a little bit dire for Firewalk's maiden voyage? Plus: Bloodborne for PS5 appears on PlayStation Stars in a cruel tease, Zenless Zone Zero hits 50 million players in only a week, Arc System Works is toiling away on a 3D Double Dragon game, Sony gets into bed with PalWorld studio Pocketpair, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! What do we think of the extensive changes Microsoft made to Xbox's Game Pass program? We've talked a great deal about AI, but how do we feel about its distant cousin procedural generation? Which changes do we want to see instituted most in Firaxis' Civilization VII? Is Concord already in trouble as Astro Bot shines and Concord falters on socials and likes on Youtube as live service and games as a service fatigue takes a toll on consumers. What will we see from PlayStation in the coming weeks and more!
On the podcast this week: We talk about the news that Xbox has cut multiple Bethesda studios, such as Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks. Helldivers 2 publishers PlayStation Studios came under fire after requiring PC players to create PSN accounts. And we may have just had a low-key announcement about the Switch 2 from Nintendo themselves. All this and more, expect hot takes and trash opinions.
A new leak seems to confirm what was already fairly obvious: Insomniac can only put so much on its shoulders, and its Wolverine game won't arrive on PlayStation 5 until 2025. But if this source's testimony is true, it means PS5's lack of upcoming first party games is even more stark in the near-and-mid-term, not to mention longer. Yes, The Last of Us: Part II Remastered is en route in January -- and with a $10 upgrade charge, there's literally nothing to complain about -- but even the rosiest amongst us must admit that it sure is looking barren from a PlayStation Studios perspective. Whether or not it matters or not to the wider market, of course, is another thing entirely, as the vacancy of exclusives hasn't halted PS5's sales dominance whatsoever. Other news this week includes conflicting reports concerning Sony's one-time timed PS5-exclusive KOTOR remake, the leak of Dragon's Dogma's 2 release date, the exit of Returnal's director from Housemarque, and more. As always, listener inquiries help us wrap everything up. Can Netflix really produce a quality BioShock film? Which game series really hit their stride with the second release? These are undoubtedly strange times in the PlayStation world. As if getting a new CEO next fiscal year wasn't enough of a shakeup, the brand has also lost (in an apparent firing) their long-time Head of Internal Production Connie Booth, someone who has been with Sony since the late '80s and who helped bring to market such titans as Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, The Last of Us, and more. With fresh layoffs hitting in-house teams like Media Molecule and support hubs like Visual Arts -- and with an increasingly barren upcoming exclusive schedule made even worse by Factions' apparent cancellation -- is it time to panic? Signals are mixed, after all. Spider-Man 2 is PlayStation Studios' fastest-selling title ever and a banger in its own right, and PlayStation 5's console sales are meteoric with or without first and second party offerings. Naturally, we take time to talk about both the big news and the big game in great detail. Plus: Listener inquiries! How're we feeling about Alan Wake 2? What in god's name is going on with the Metal Gear Solid Collection? Should Sony attempt to replicate Nintendo's development continuity in order to extract similar results? Just what is Dustin doing with that figurine in the jar?
