On the Secret Witch Show today our guest is Lucy Pearce. Lucy is the author of multiple life-changing non-fiction books, including Nautilus Award silver winners Medicine Woman, Burning Woman, and Creatrix. Her writing focuses on women's healing through archetypal psychology, embodiment, historical awareness and creativity. An award-winning graduate in History of Ideas with English Literature from Kingston University, and a PGCE from Cambridge University, Lucy founded Womancraft Publishing, creating paradigm-shifting books by women for women, in 2014. The mother of three children, she lives in East Cork, Ireland In this episode we explore how to reclaim the magic in our sensitivity - and in particular, neurodivergence. We dive into what “neurodivergence” is, and means, and what signs might help sensitive souls illuminate that they are neuro-diverse - as well as why and how women who resonate with this label must meet their sensitive needs, rather than try to mask and fit into a culture that doesn't suit them. Most importantly, we shared our important worldview on how neurodivergence can actually be a gift - and especially a super-power that allows magical women to be powerful healers, teachers and guides. What You'll Learn from this Episode: Highly sensitive women are often also ‘neurodivergent' - a word which is commonly understood by labels such as autism, ADHD or things like dyslexia or dyscalculia - and mean that we have different from ‘typical' brains Neurodivergence (ND) can show up in lots of different ways, but the main way it can present itself is having a sensitive nervous system that is over-primed - as well as feeling burned out, touched out and overwhelmed by our senses (we have a deep sensitivity to noise, scents, clothes on our skin, lights, electricity, and other things) The label of neurodivergence can be really helpful in aiding us to see that there's actually nothing wrong with us as a sensitive soul - and that we are just wired differently, and struggling to fit into a world that wasn't built for us; owning it this way can help us learn to navigate the world in an aligned way As sensitive women, and ND women, we must learn to honour and meet our own needs, so that we aren't constantly overwhelmed and our nervous systems don't reach meltdown. As we do meet our needs, we can reclaim the gifts in our sensitivity And there are many gifts - creativity, brilliant minds, the capacity to spot patterns, entrepreneurial skills, deep passion for things, high empathy and sensitivity to other worlds (in other words, all the ‘clairs' - e.g. clairvoyance), a capacity for lucid dreaming, a high importance for truthful expression, hyper-focus and a real affinity with nature It is common for these gifts to make sensitive souls excellent ‘healers' - as long as we can reclaim the gifts in our sensitivity. When Lucy Pearce published her book about the power of the menstrual cycle, Moon Time: Harness the ever-changing energy of your menstrual cycle 11 years ago, she was one of very few people talking about periods, and it was one of the first books in print to speak about the Red Tent movement. Over the past decade her loyalty to her cycle has helped her as a multi-passionate creatrix to write twelve books, found Womancraft - a paradigm-shifting publishing house, edit and publish over 50 books, teach courses, create beautiful art and parent three children.Five years ago she received an autism diagnosis, and in our conversation today we explore how this had helped her to understand herself far better, have tools to care for herself and manage her life as a cycle-aware creative in an all-too-linear world. We explore:How to process a neurodivergence diagnosis, renegotiate your life and relationships and create a protective bubble to safeguard yourself. How Lucy navigated years of crippling shame which shut down her creativity entirely, by saying yes to her creative expression in small ways. The truth that real creativity happens outside of our comfort zones, and how we can lean into the stretch to meet what is truly authentic, and unearth that which has been shut down within each of us. ---Receive our free video training: Love Your Cycle, Discover the Power of Menstrual Cycle Awareness to Revolutionise Your Life - www.redschool.net/love---The Menstruality Podcast is hosted by Red School. She shares with us how her intuition has steered her course throughout her life and how her outlook on her life has changed since discovering she is neurodiverse. She talks to us about how her updated editions of her books are written now through the lens of neurodiversity. She calls out patriarchy and the messages that we have been forced to accept as women over centuries and calls us all forward to make shifts away from these dominant and oppressive narratives. We also talk about the powerful space of women's circles and finding safe and supportive pockets of the internet. Lucy beautifully shares with us how it is possible to find a balance that works for her and her neurodiversity while at the same time making powerful changes in the world. I am so grateful to have her in my circle. About Lucy:Lucy H. Pearce is driven by a need to create, connect and inspire. This week's show is with Steve James. Steve travels internationally teaching somatic practices, meditation, as well as leading explorations in contemplative & relational realms. Known for his direct, grounded approach and his dedication to first-hand research, he has extensive experience in elite athletic performance, contemplative and spiritual disciplines, the arts, extreme outdoor survival, and human behaviour. Steve's unique range of experiences and understanding of human behaviour, high performance, spirituality, and interpersonal relationships is highly sought after by leading figures at the highest levels of the arts, entertainment, and business. In his private client practice he specialises in the unique interpersonal and strategic challenges faced by very successful and highly visible individuals. Ongoing clients include Oscar-winning actors, multi Grammy winning musicians, CEO's, and fund managers. Steve is the creator of the Movement Koan Method® and the host of the Guru Viking Podcast. In this show, Steve turned the tables on Lian and interviewed her! This was completely unplanned but they decided to indulge Steve's curiosity about Lian being autistic, so he asked her a whole raft of brilliant questions including about her own experiences growing up, the reason she went for a diagnosis and what it's provided to her, as well as questions about the broader topic of autism and neurodivergence generally. Due to the spontaneous and personal nature of this episode, in which Lian was answering the questions in the moment and from her own experience, she wasn't intending to speak for all people with neurodivergences or the myriad of different experiences they might have that differ from her own. Each person is unique and whilst there might be some commonalities spoken of there will also be things that only apply or makes sense to Lian. Take only what's useful or feels true for you. I'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below. What you'll learn from this episode: If you have listened to this and suspect you're neurodivergent then trust yourself whether going for a diagnosis will be helpful for you - it's not essential, self-diagnosis is completely valid Resources and stuff that we spoke about: Lucy Pearce episode Magical Archetypes Waking The Wild Medicine Steve James Official Website: Guru Viking Join Steve James in the Movement Koan Method® Movement Koan Method® Video by Steve James Movement Koan Method® 2 Video by Steve James Explore meditation and practice together online with Steve James at Guru Viking Meditation Club Thank you for listening! Lucy Pearce is an author, artist and publisher from East Cork in Ireland. She is 41, and when she was 37 she, her mother and her daughter were all diagnosed autistic within 6 months of each other. Lucy is the author of ten non-fiction books for women, focusing on women's healing, and founded her own publishing company in 2014 to offer support to new women authors whose books are often ignored by the mainstream publishing industry. Not knowing at the time that she was autistic, she has since realised that she and her books attract a neurodivergent audience. We covered a huge amount in our conversation, including: ➡ Her fight to get her daughter assessed ➡ How her relationship with her mother has changed since they were both diagnosed ➡ Coming to terms with her own needs, and learning to put her wellbeing first ➡ Giving language to the autistic experience ➡ Autistic women and advocating for our physical and mental health Squarepeg is a podcast in which neurodivergent women, and trans and nonbinary people, explore navigating a neurotypical world and share their insights, challenges and successes. I hope that these conversations will be inspiring and thought provoking, open you up to new ways of thinking about being neurodivergent, and help you feel more connected to a worldwide community of people with similar experiences. I'm Amy Richards, and after being diagnosed autistic at the age of 37 I'm now on a mission to learn more about different perspectives and issues around being a neurodivergent adult in a world that feels like it doesn't quite fit. In this episode, Shapeshifter, Nervous System Alchemist and Sorceress, Elisha Halpin, shares in detail, her moment of awakening — a mystical experience of transcending time and space in an Irish stone circle. Elisha shares her deep knowledge and wisdom around the intimate relationship between our nervous systems and intuition, and hence, the critical importance of trauma work. She dives into why us humans aren't regulated in the modern world, and shares the most beautiful mothering morning routine that she practices in order to heal her nervous system and live energy first. I am really, really thrilled today to share this conversation with author, artist and publisher Lucy Pearce. Lucy's books, including Moods of Motherhood and Nautilus Award winners Medicine Woman, Burning Woman, and Creatrix: she who makes have shaped me, my work and my life in so many ways. One of the common threads in this interview is how Lucy endeavours to write about and give language to the things that so many of us feel we are experiencing in isolation, not realizing that so much of what we are going through is actually a collective experience – and that we are never alone. Lucy and I dive into the paradox of creativity in motherhood, how we can dismantle individualistic ways of approaching our healing, how we can lean into the cycles of nature to normalize the cycles in our lives, and the creative process as a rite of passage. We finish our conversation with Lucy sharing a little bit about her new book, She of The Sea, which is about the mysterious pull of the sea and of water that washes over so many of us as we're traversing changes in our lives. I had full-body chills as she described this book – a sure sign that I will have to have Lucy back on the show to tell us even more about She of The Sea. For now, though, I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. We weave through so many important and fascinating topics, and Lucy's wisdom shines throughout.

Lucy Pearce is the author of numerous life-changing non-fiction books for women, including: Burning Woman, The Rainbow Way and Moon Time, all #1 Amazon bestsellers. Lucy’s work is dedicated to supporting women’s empowered, embodied expression. She is the founder of Womancraft Publishing. Mary Fran Bontempo joins Charlie to discuss how aging can be a gift, and how to make words like change, fear, and fine not be dirty words. They also discuss how much of our identities is fixed by the stuff we accumulate. Key Takeaways: [1:19] - Introduction to Mary Fran Bontempo and how she got started in her writing career. She talks about how her creativity grew from a really dark spot in her life. The fear and hesitance of her situation sparked her creative process. [2:30] - Many people who are in the “fall/mid-winter” stage of their lives are reluctant to pursue creativity. Why? We should embrace creativity throughout the many years of our lives. Yes, there may be many more things on our plates, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make time for something new. [4:15] - What would you say to someone who is unsure of where to start and how to keep up? We can choose to continue to evolve with new technology developments and try things out to see what works. [6:48] - Mindset around aging - how do we see it as a gift rather than a sentence? Mary Fran talks about a new way to define where we are now; sometimes we have to learn to disengage from the expectations of our “now” to break into something new. [8:49] - Mary offers three tips and strategies for parents wanting to lean out of the routines that are no longer as relevant to where they are now. [9:56] - Charlie follows up on that discussion with ideas about a few different types of dependency: negative codependency and interdependency. This relationship between child and parent can be scary for parents when it no longer exists in the same capacity. [12:18] - As the average lifespan is increasing, we have more time - before, while, and especially after - having kids, that has so much potential for becoming a time of creativity. [13:55] - What are some of the fears that prevent us from doing the things we know we need to do to continue progressing? This is especially applicable for young people. [18:02] - There are often a host of opportunities available to us. As we are moving forward in our lives, it may be more beneficial to make decisions that will keep you moving forward, rather than getting stuck waiting around for something to come along. You may end up opening more doors for yourself! [19:25] - Charlie discusses the shift from a “career world” to a “project world.” What does that mean for younger generations as well as older generations of entrepreneurs and forward thinkers? [23:20] - Change as a dirty word. Change often comes hand in hand with fear - we think it will wreak havoc on our lives, but Mary Fran encourages us to remember that we deal with change on a regular basis and we can handle it. This perspective can help carry us through bigger changes in our lives. [26:35] - We typically underestimate our own capabilities. How will we respond when we receive the “cosmic kick in the butt?” Our response can show us what the full range of what we are capable of - don’t get too comfortable. [28:48] - The dirty word fine. Mary Fran and Charlie discuss different uses of the word ‘fine’, and the pros and cons of accepting fine and also exploring new words to define a similar state. [31:47] - Charlie talks about some societal norms we encounter when talking about our current state. How do people typically respond when we share some of the things we’re grateful for, versus the things that bother us? [35:01] - The self-talk that we run through our head is a choice, and we can choose to use that to put something positive out into the world. Conversely, we can change our self-talk to encourage better attitudes for the things coming ahead, creating a flow between the subconscious and the conscious. This can have a great effect on how we feel about getting older and our place in the world. [38:13] - Mary Fran encourages an exercise to gather a group of friends and write an introduction or a statement, in the hopes that we will begin to regard ourselves the way our friends regard us. [41:47] - When we start letting some stuff go and refine what we want our space to look like, we can redefine what we want our lives to look like. Releasing some of the stuff in our lives can allow a great amount of growth moving forward. This holds true for material possessions as well as emotional baggage that can weigh us down. [47:04] - The way we live our lives now is different - pursuing experiences is becoming more important than pursuing material goods. And we do acquire stuff, we use it! [51:57] - We should strive to define ourselves on the basis of who we want to be, no matter our age or place in life. It all begins in the “six inches between your ears.” Be intentional in your self-talk.
