In many indigenous communities across the world, people have long honoured menstruation as a sacred time. Today we're lucky to be exploring the beauty and wisdom of the ancestral moontime medicine of the Andean people, and our guest is Dr Cynthia Ingar, who is an anthropologist and Andean keeper of Woman Medicine wisdom living in the Sacred Valley in Peru. In her late twenties, Cynthia was guided by a mentor to do thirteen traditional Andean moontime retreats where she was in silence and eating a special diet for four days and four nights while she menstruated.Cynthia has dedicated her life to teaching a woman-centered approach to women's health, to traditional midwifery and to revitalizing Andean Woman Medicine including menstrual cycle and the Andean Moontime traditional practices. In this rich, magical conversation, we explore how her moontime retreats prepared her to live her calling, both as a keeper of this Woman Medicine and as a mother to her children. We explore:How we travel to the ‘Ukupacha' when we bleed, which is the realm related to the Feminine, where we perceive life differently, experience altered states of consciousness, and receive insights and wisdom. How Cynthia works with the ancestral Andean practice of praying with her menstrual blood, as an offering to Pachamama, to mother earth. What she has learned from grandmother mentors about how they worked with the ancient menstrual practices to give them inspiration and guidance in their work as the keepers of ceremony and the rituals of life for the community.  ---Receive our free video training: Love Your Cycle, Discover the Power of Menstrual Cycle Awareness to Revolutionise Your Life - www.redschool.net/love---The Menstruality Podcast is hosted by Red School. A Pinch of Magick
Giving voice and breaking silence through writing - An Interview with Lucy H. Pearce

A Pinch of Magick

**PLEASE NOTE: Today's episode contains adult themes and occasional language some might find offensive** Today on the A Pinch of Magick podcast I'm joined by Lucy H Pearce, an author, artist, and founder of Womancraft Publishing. We start off talking about how Lucy first got into writing. It's a story that many of you might find familiar—a need to express, to connect, to make sense of the world. Lucy shares how writing became her way of doing just that, and how it evolved into something much bigger than she could ever have anticipated. Then we get into the heart of what happens when you suppress that creative urge. Lucy's been there, and she talks about the toll it takes. It's a bit like holding your breath; at some point, you've got to let it out. Sharing your most honest work can be terrifying. Lucy knows this all too well, and she shares how she learned to get more comfortable with it. It's about finding that balance between vulnerability and strength, and she's got some tips that could help you do just that. Lucy explains that each book she brings into the world is like stepping out of her comfort zone abit more. It's a challenge, but one that she leans into, and she tells us why. We also touch on something a bit heavier—the sense of danger Lucy has felt in her own body when tackling certain topics. It's a reminder that creating a safe space for yourself is crucial, especially when you're pushing your own boundaries. Now, why is the feminine so often linked with darkness, with things that are considered 'bad'? Lucy and I delve into this, breaking down some of the cultural narratives that have shaped these beliefs. She believes that one of the biggest gifts she can give the world is breaking that silence, giving voice to those things that have been silenced or kept in the shadows. What does success look like to you? Lucy urges us to define that for ourselves, to step away from what society tells us it should be. It's about stepping into your own truth, and she's got some thoughts on how you can do that. We discuss Lucy's latest book, The Kitchen Witch Companion, and how it's more than just a collection of recipes. Lucy describes it as a journey into reclaiming our power, our magick, and our true hunger and desires. She also explains what magick means to her. We wrap up with a discussion about evidence, the importance of 'noticing,' and why life is never really 'done.' It's a constant process of change and evolution, and Lucy's next book, Crow Moon, is a testament to that. By the end of our chat, you'll walk away with not just answers to some big questions, but also a toolkit for navigating your own path. So, are you ready to dive in? About Lucy H. Pearce Lucy H. Welcome to the 8th Luna Aroma Session! This time of year, mid-summer, has a lot going on; a bittersweetness as days grow shorter. There's still an abundance of growth, but things are slowing down, simmering. They aren't as urgent as they were only a few weeks ago. We're entering a time of maturity, protection and holding. These are themes that fit with Carrot Seed essential oil and the plant who bears the seed, the lovely "Queen Anne's Lace." I feel there's a sense of loss as we turn into mid and late summer--a loss of sun, childhood. Maturation acknowledges this but doesn't cling to it, it rather propels us forward. There is still much work to be done, life to live and moontimes to experience. Here's my invitation to you: go outside and lovingly gather a few Queen Anne's Lace flowers and seeds and take out your bottle of Daucus carota essential oil. Then sit with me, as I guide you through an aromatic encounter followed by a self-penned poem about Queen Anne's Lace and the heavy-lightness of life. Remember, after this there is so much to experience and enjoy. There is only one end. This episode features Thunder moontime, when the hot and humid days of summer are often visited by thunder, lightning and rain. This is a time, like most times, to contemplate change. But this time is different. Lighting and thunder are sudden and drastic. They are poignant symbols of change and transmutation. Think of something in your life that weighs on you, that you are looking to change, to shift. Thunder moontime, lightning time, can metaphorically assist along with the powerful essential oils featured in this episode. Categorically, I feel, essential oils assist in change. They are agents of change: whether a temporary shift in mood and mind states or helping bridge the false mind-body-spirt gap, assist with grief or usher in new beginnings and adopting new habits in exchange for old ones (to name a few states-of-being). Are you ready? Get your Rosemary, Laurel and Sage (common, clary and white) essential oils or plants to sit with during this episode's Guided Aromatic Encounter. The Three Sages also spur a contemplation on the Triple Goddess, something you don't want to miss. But more on that once you get into the episode... Look forward to themes about sharing abundance and life's riches (e.g., strawberries!) & turning to cooling botanicals such as members of the Rose and Citrus families. This episode celebrates Flower moontime and all that comes with it, including when "all plants display their spirit sides for all the world to see." More on that in the episode! How can we be serious when there are baby animals frolicking about, insects buzzing around and plants to interact with? This episode celebrates Flower moontime: by shedding seriousness and supporting what it takes to be ourselves and connecting with the world around us through aromatic plants. Go ahead, set some time aside to bask in the springtime playfulness of German Chamomile; a plant that I feel allows us to open up, let go and partake in a sense of play that may be hiding within us. How so? Connecting with the solar plexus through German Chamomile just might do the trick. With so much fecundity abounding during this moontime, e.e. cumming's poem "you said" seemed fitting and is featured towards the end of this Luna Aroma Episode. "The air of spring smelling of never and forever," is one of the lines. There's a lightness to spring, with it's yellow-green hues, that can make one almost giddy, do you agree? Happy Mid-Spring! A time of new beginnings, new growth and cleansing the mind and body of what is no longer needed. You may notice how this episode is slightly longer than other Luna Aroma musings. Why? I bookended the guided aromatic encounter with poems! The first is "Grass" by Joyce Sidman, the second is "Last Rites" by Rosa Alcalá. This is a moontime to talk with GRASS! Grass is growing, it is a resilient plant family that is often the "first"...such as the some of the first plants to emerge as the temperatures increase, the first to show up on disturbed sites...in and of itself the family is emblematic of first, newness and renewal. So how are grass and cleansing connected? This is where Lemongrass and Palmarosa come in. Go ahead and make a cup of Lemongrass tea, get out your essential oils of Lemongrass and Palmarosa and settle in with me for a spell to talk with the grasses. Is it safe? Does God like it? Should you stop? In this episode we're looking at a new age practice that's getting really popular. It can look like giving your period blood to house plants or back to the earth (as a spiritual practice or as fertilizer). And it can grow into putting the blood on your face as a facial! I hope you've never even heard about this topic BUT if you've been taught this and practiced it on your own, like I did, I want to talk about it.  In this episode... why is it called ‘moontime' and ‘moonblood'? and an explanation of the period blood practice that's being taught to new agers where did this practice originate? who are the people who are most likely to be attracted to it + why I share my experience participating in this practice for 2 years + what I learned once I stopped (I hope this encourages you) the red flags to look out for when choosing practices and teachers and, a 3 part discernment practice to decide if what you're doing is ok and honoring to God Interested in working together 1-1?I'd love that too! Each episode is created and shared near each new moon, which provides a reference point and rhythmic structure to the ebb and flow of this aromatic journey. Why the new moon? New moons represent beginnings, starts and transitions to the next rise of energy that culminates at the full moon. This foundational episode celebrates and observes wolf moontime. A time in the northern hemisphere when the Earth isn't adorned with her green jewelry and flowers. Now is the time to appreciate Earth's outlines, silhouettes, bare soil and rocks.
