Matt Wenning is a powerlifting icon. Accumulating some of the biggest numbers in history as a geared and raw powerlifter. Matt exemplifies the three pillars of success as a barbell coach. 1-Education, he holds a Masters Degree from Ball State in Biomechanics and a Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science. 2-Longevity he has amassed world records with no major injuries while being successful in the sport starting as a teenager. 3-Performance that goes without saying. In 2011 he set the all time world record equipped squat at 1197.6 and in 2016 beat his previous raw squat record with an 865. He has pressed over 600 and continues lifting massive weights to this day. He has taken his talents outside of the powerlifting platform to work with tactical units, first responders and athletes to help them lead a healthy career avoiding injury. Matt is generous with his content supplying lifters with free content all the time on his social media pages. He was a gracious guest and it was one of the highlights of the show to have him on. His knowledge of training and performance really show. He has worked with the best coaches in the world while becoming a sought after coach himself. Matt is working hard to let the world know longevity is king and with the correct approach you can lift for a lifetime. https://wenningstrength.com/https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCy7yy0MfVV_bI9xB7Ny1ykQhttps://instagram.com/realmattwenning?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=7https://youtube.com/@platesandpancakes4593https://instagram.com/voodoo4power?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=https://voodoo4ranch.com/To possibly be a guest or support the show email Voodoo4ranch@gmail.comhttps://www.paypal.com/paypalme/voodoo4ranch
In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I chatted with Matt Wenning, who is a world class strength athlete and coach. We talked about the key considerations for sustainable strength training for overall health and longevity. Matt outlined the components of his infamous Wenning warmup that has help build world class strength. He talked about the importance of exercise and programming variance to reduce training mileage, wear and tear, and allow for successful training for the long haul. Matt also detailed his philosophy for nutrition, recovery, and the key principles for avoiding injury past the age of 40. Matt is one of only a handful of people to total over 2,600lbs in a professional competition, hold an all-time world record of 2,665lbs in the 308-lb class, and bench press over 800lbs in a full powerlifting meet. He is a three-time world champion powerlifter who has led over 6,000 troops in strength, conditioning, and wellness for the U.S. Army including Infantry and Ranger Divisions. He graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science and a Master's Degree in Biomechanics. Matt was raised in Indiana by a hardworking, middle-class family. His mother was a nurse, and his father was a Marine and truck driver. When he was six years old, Matt was hit by a car going 50 mph, which took a toll on his physical development. After undergoing 12 months of full leg casts and 12 months in a boot, his legs were underdeveloped. Four years later, Matt discovered lifting. It allowed him to see he was capable of anything, despite what he had gone through during his recovery from injuries. At the age of 13, Matt started lifting in competitions when his father passed away due to cancer. In the beginning, lifting was just a stepping stone to the goal of football. However, it became a much larger path in his life which motivated Matt to further his education and become a strength coach. Matt has been an adviser for the NFL, an international speaker for the NSCA, as well as a contractor for border patrol, airborne divisions, and the pentagon. He is currently a private strength coach at Ludus Magnus gym in Columbus, Ohio, and a personal trainer to many executives and professionals at Capital Club Athletics. He also works with firefighters, physicians, children with disabilities, and all forms of athletes in the Columbus, Ohio, area. Find out more about Matt on his website www.wenningstrength.com and on Instagram @realmattwenning. *** Please note that the content discussed in this podcast is intended for self-education and is not to be interpreted as medical advice.

The Ludus Magnus is located immediately east of the Colosseum. Translated as the ‘big training ground’ this was the largest and most prestigious gladiatorial school and barracks in ancient Rome. It is one of four centers where gladiators from across the Roman Empire would live, eat, and practice while preparing for their participation in fights. This tour explains the layout of the site and an explanation of the life and death of a gladiator. Photo by Tyler Bell, Flickr, Attribution 2.0 Generic (CC BY 2.0)
Each episode in this series gives you the history and a short tour of a site in the eternal city in the hope that you can make the most of your visit. I was motivated to create this series after many great trips to Rome. That said, each time I visited I realized I spent half of my time with my head buried in various guide books reading out the history to others. Fun though this was, I also wanted to be able to just look at the sights and have someone else narrate the context. I would often later find out that the guide books weren't particularly detailed or necessarily accurate. So, I found myself repeatedly asking: 'why doesn’t someone just record a good description of the main sites giving details of each location, some key history of the building, how it came to be there, who built it and why?'. After the 3rd time of complaining about this I realized that, rather than waiting for someone else, I could just do it myself. In doing this I have been inspired by the work of numerous other visitors to Rome and to many of the people that have actively researched, excavated, mapped, drawn and documented their findings. Specifically in my case the Rome Walking Tour Written by Walter Muzzey (https://www.jeffbondono.com/TouristInRome/WaltersTours/WaltersToursOfAncientRome.html) collated and edited by Jeff Bondono was an extremely useful source and inspiration. Note that this narrative is available online (https://www.jeffbondono.com/TouristInRome/) and as a free download (https://www.amazon.com/Tourist-Rome-Jeff-Bondono-ebook/dp/B00KEW57OI/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=jeff+bondono&qid=1600037441&sr=8-1) on Amazon kindle. Jeff has also painstakingly photographed pretty much every Roman site in the city and I do recommend checking out jeffbondono.com. In terms of recommendations for books about Rome here are sources I’ve found useful: For kids there’s: Gladiators “Fighting to the death in Ancient Rome” written by M. C. Bishop. (https://www.amazon.com/Gladiators-Fighting-Ancient-Casemate-History/dp/1612005136/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_1?dchild=1&keywords=Gladiators+%E2%80%9CFighting+to+the+death+in+Ancient+Rome%E2%80%9D+written+by+M.+C.+Bishop.&qid=1600037512&sr=8-1-fkmr2) This is handy if you’re visiting the Colosseum, Ludus Magnus or Circus Maximus. I think its aimed at mid-teens but can easily be read to younger children. Its packed full of interesting facts about life as a gladiator and corrects a lot of the misunderstandings created in many of our modern movies. Another good kid-friendly book is the History of Rome in 12 Buildings by Phillip Barlag (https://www.amazon.com/History-Rome-12-Buildings-Companion/dp/1632651327/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=History+of+Rome+in+12+Buildings+by+Phillip+Barlag&qid=1600037540&sr=8-1) . This provides a journey both through time and space by visiting a dozen different sites that, taken together, span the entire history of the Roman empire. His short book is very easy reading and weaves an appreciation for the buildings together with a great sense of the people that built them. Now, if you’re interested reading much more in-depth information on ancient Rome then I highly recommend Amanda Claridge (https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Amanda+Claridge&rh=n%3A154606011%2Cp_n_feature_nine_browse-bin%3A3291437011&dc&qid=1600037590&rnid=3291435011&ref=sr_nr_p_n_feature_nine_browse-bin_1) ’s books. Specifically: Rome, an Oxford Archaeological Guide (https://www.amazon.com/Oxford-Archaeological-Guides-Amanda-Claridge/dp/0199546835/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Rome%2C+an+Oxford+Archaeological+Guide&qid=1600037567&sr=8-1) – this is a truly great resource, if you want detail and are looking to only carry one book with you, you couldn’t choose anything better. Note, it doesn’t have the glossy color pictures of other guide books but does have archaeologically accurate descriptions, great guidance for visiting and is exceptionally well researched by someone that is an expert in Roman archaeology. Claridge also co-edited a summary of the current state of scholarly understanding of Ancient Rome. This is A Companion to the City of Rome (https://www.amazon.com/Companion-Blackwell-Companions-Ancient-World-ebook/dp/B07FK465RN/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Amanda+Claridge&qid=1600037590&refinements=p_n_feature_nine_browse-bin%3A3291437011&rnid=3291435011&s=digital-text&sr=1-2) . It is more of text-book and, weighing in at nearly 3lbs isn’t really something you’re going to want to carry around with you – but it does give a single source from which to find references to the seminal works covering pretty much all aspects of ancient Rome’s history, landscape, buildings, religion, its economy, society and its various governance structures. In researching this podcast I have found the Atlas of Ancient Rome (https://www.amazon.com/Atlas-Ancient-Rome-Biography-Two/dp/0691163472) , edited by Andrea Carandini, to be a most incredibly valuable, detailed and thorough aggregation of the latest research. This two-volume publication is the most comprehensive summary of the ancient sites of all of Rome but is likely only of interest to an extreme enthusiast or historian. If you're looking for something at the other end of the spectrum then the National Geographic Traveler (https://www.amazon.com/National-Geographic-Traveler-Rome-4th/dp/1426212666/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=National+Geographic+Traveler+Rome&qid=1600037682&s=digital-text&sr=1-5-catcorr) series is worthy of consideration. This has an easy-to-read but also very shallow guide to Rome. It does have good color pictures and maps so, if you just want something that helps you get around then it’s a handy and a very accessible read but don’t expect to learn too much about any given location. Also, if you haven’t already found them, there are two other podcasts that you might find interesting: The first is an extremely comprehensive series called “The History of Rome” recorded by Mike Duncan (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-history-of-rome/id261654474) – this was a weekly podcast that ran from 2007 to 2012 and traced the history of the entirety of the Roman Empire, beginning with Aeneas's arrival in Italy and ending with the exile of Romulus Augustulus, the last Emperor of the Western Roman Empire. The second podcast is “When in Rome” (https://www.listennotes.com/podcasts/when-in-rome-matt-smith-_ADeBr7oSUq/) – this is an ongoing kickstarter-funded project by Matt Smith. Try not to be put-off by the intro music, sorry Matt, but the episodes, conducted as a series of interviews, explore a lot of the same locations that I cover but provide more of a general history than a detailed guide for someone that is actively visiting the site. That said, I’ve really enjoyed listening to these and learning about more of the context for the buildings around the city of Rome and beyond. As should be clear from the Episode titles, I’ve generally created one episode per site however I broke the Roman Forum into individual short-form episodes so that you can quickly navigate your way around without having to following a specific route. So, to be clear, you don’t need to listen to or visit the sites in the numerical order of the episodes. To avoid data roaming charges, if you’re planning on listening on your cell phone then I recommend downloading all the episodes while on WiFi. Most of the locations don’t have an open public network that you can access so you’ll need to do this in advance. In terms of general tips for visiting Rome, there are many well researched online videos and good advice in most guide books. My recommends are simply: Get up and out early to avoid the crowds – and it can get really crowded at the major locations to the point that you might have to queue for an hour or more to get in if you’re late to arrive; Go and see one or two sites then take an early lunch to make it easy to find somewhere to eat and then go back out sightseeing when everyone else, that got up late, is struggling to find a restaurant with the menu or at the price point they want. There are various different passes that let you visit multiple locations and are valid for multiple days. The specific offers vary by season so I would recommend checking online for the best options for your visit. This will save you money. Check whether you need to have additional tickets to see specific areas in the places you are visiting as sometimes only small group access is allowed to certain exhibits or buildings. Unfortunately you’re going to have to keep an eye out for pickpockets, keep your valuables in sight at all times – this includes when you are in churches and even when you’ve paid for entry. To minimize the risk, travel light and leave your valuables at home. Wear sunglasses, put on sun screen and carry some drinking water – it can get very bright and hot if you’re visiting any time from May to September – particularly if you’re in an open area surrounded by reflective white marble. If you keep an eye out its relatively easy to find places to replenish your own water bottle from fonts around the city – for example there are public fonts with perfectly good drinking water the Roman forum and on the Palatine hill. If you pay for a guide make sure you get an early entrance slot – yes, the guide groups do often allow you to skip the line but there are a lot of people trying to do this just like you and it can be frustrating to be waiting in line with a guide that is on a fixed schedule. I genuinely hope this podcast series is useful. Feel free to provide feedback via your podcasting app or on rome-podcast.com. Thanks for listening and now please go and enjoy Rome.

Matt discusses his time as a collegiate and NFL strength coach and how/why he decided to start his own company. We talk about the business of Wenning Strength including his gym Ludus Magnus, his work helping fireman reduce injuries and stress, to his days as a military contractor working with elite military operators. Matt's no nonsense blue color approach to his brand is what attracts many people to want to work with him. “Obviously you can train harder when your younger but the philosophy is the same, which is, where are you weak and how do we fix these area’s so you’re less prone to injury, so we can train harder?” Matt Wenning joins us to discuss programming and the direction the world of training needs to move. After starting out with a brief background, Matt dives right into discussing some of the issues he sees in the world of training today. He touches upon the complexity of training, people rushing results, and the role of programming in recovery. Having learned from some of the best of the best in the iron game, Matt has been guided by and learned from fantastic coaches helping him build his programming. His “planning” is extremely similar even looking across platforms with tactical athletes (fire fighters and military), team sport athletes, general population, or lifters. He starts out looking specify at their weaknesses and the most common issues/injuries that occur within the sport/activity. This includes exactly how he breaks this down and looks at it to adjust training for both single clients and how he alters it for larger groups. Matt then breaks down some aspects of his programming including specific exercises he has selected. His break down of this includes exercise selection, reasons he selects those means, and what he is looking for to determine that selection. This leads him right into where he see’s specialized/specific exercise in the realm of training and why he feels these are moving further away from where we need to train people based on the obesity epidemic, and how that’s impacting basic training. He finishes out with sharing with us the direction training is going and the reasons behind it.
