In this episode, Matt and Dave discuss kidney function and health (delving into Matt's recent stem cell treatment in Cabo), business, the 70% rule, and much more! Matt Wenning is a three-time world champion powerlifter. He has directed over 6000 troops in strength, conditioning, and wellness for the U.S. Army, including Infantry and Ranger Divisions. He holds a Masters Degree in Biomechanics and a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Ball State University. Matt grew up in Indiana, raised by a hard-working, middle-class family. His mother was a nurse, and his father was a Marine and truck driver. When he was six years old, Matt was hit by a car going 50 mph, which took a toll on his physical development. After undergoing 12 months of full leg casts and 12 months in a boot, his legs were underdeveloped. Four years later, Matt discovered lifting. It allowed him to see he was capable of anything, despite what he had gone through during recovery from his injuries. Then, when Matt was 13, his father passed away due to cancer; a result of complications from agent orange. That's when he started lifting in competitions. In the beginning, lifting was just a stepping stone to the goal of football. But it became a much larger pathway in his life. Lifting inspired Matt to attain higher education and become a strength coach. He excelled with a 3.9 GPA. He has been an adviser for the NFL, an international speaker for the NSCA, and a contractor for border patrol, airborne divisions, and the pentagon.   Matt's IG: https://www.instagram.com/realmattwenning/   Wenning Strength: https://wenningstrength.com/       ABOUT THE HOST   Dave Tate is the founder and co-owner of elitefts.com. In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I chatted with Matt Wenning, who is a world class strength athlete and coach. We talked about the key considerations for sustainable strength training for overall health and longevity. Matt outlined the components of his infamous Wenning warmup that has help build world class strength. He talked about the importance of exercise and programming variance to reduce training mileage, wear and tear, and allow for successful training for the long haul. Matt also detailed his philosophy for nutrition, recovery, and the key principles for avoiding injury past the age of 40.  Matt is one of only a handful of people to total over 2,600lbs in a professional competition, hold an all-time world record of 2,665lbs in the 308-lb class, and bench press over 800lbs in a full powerlifting meet. He is a three-time world champion powerlifter who has led over 6,000 troops in strength, conditioning, and wellness for the U.S. Army including Infantry and Ranger Divisions. He graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science and a Master's Degree in Biomechanics. Matt was raised in Indiana by a hardworking, middle-class family. It allowed him to see he was capable of anything, despite what he had gone through during his recovery from injuries. At the age of 13, Matt started lifting in competitions when his father passed away due to cancer. In the beginning, lifting was just a stepping stone to the goal of football. However, it became a much larger path in his life which motivated Matt to further his education and become a strength coach.  Matt has been an adviser for the NFL, an international speaker for the NSCA, as well as a contractor for border patrol, airborne divisions, and the pentagon. He is currently a private strength coach at Ludus Magnus gym in Columbus, Ohio, and a personal trainer to many executives and professionals at Capital Club Athletics. He also works with firefighters, physicians, children with disabilities, and all forms of athletes in the Columbus, Ohio, area.  Find out more about Matt on his website www.wenningstrength.com and on Instagram @realmattwenning.  *** Please note that the content discussed in this podcast is intended for self-education and is not to be interpreted as medical advice.

Matt Wenning is one seriously strong human.  He has held and broken World Powerlifting records over his career as a Strength athlete.  He’s one of a handful of people to have lifted a total of over 2600Ibs (1180kg) at a Powerlifting meet.  This is insanely strong.  Period.  As well as this though, Matt is a student (and one could say Master) of the science of getting strong, very strong.  He holds a Masters in Biomechanics and has learnt from and worked with some of the worlds leading authorities on Strength training and research in Strength.  Names like Bill Kraemer, Charles Poliquin, Professor Rob Newton.  These are people that have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of understanding and adding to the body of knowledge on Strength training and Matt is doing exactly the same thing.  I’ve no doubt in years to come that Matt will be held in similar regard to these people.  So our chat covered many key topics, at times I had to dig deep into my own understanding and learnings just to keep up.  Matt is a walking encyclopedia on the basics and intricacies of getting strong.  I really enjoyed this podcast, I could’ve talked to Matt for hours.  If you want to understand Strength training or training in general better, take my advice and follow Matt, learn from his various social media platforms and remember the name @realMattWenning.  Thanks Matt.

“Obviously you can train harder when your younger but the philosophy is the same, which is, where are you weak and how do we fix these area’s so you’re less prone to injury, so we can train harder?” Matt Wenning joins us to discuss programming and the direction the world of training needs to move. After starting out with a brief background, Matt dives right into discussing some of the issues he sees in the world of training today. He touches upon the complexity of training, people rushing results, and the role of programming in recovery. Having learned from some of the best of the best in the iron game, Matt has been guided by and learned from fantastic coaches helping him build his programming. His “planning” is extremely similar even looking across platforms with tactical athletes (fire fighters and military), team sport athletes, general population, or lifters. He starts out looking specify at their weaknesses and the most common issues/injuries that occur within the sport/activity. This includes exactly how he breaks this down and looks at it to adjust training for both single clients and how he alters it for larger groups. Matt then breaks down some aspects of his programming including specific exercises he has selected. His break down of this includes exercise selection, reasons he selects those means, and what he is looking for to determine that selection. This leads him right into where he see’s specialized/specific exercise in the realm of training and why he feels these are moving further away from where we need to train people based on the obesity epidemic, and how that’s impacting basic training. He finishes out with sharing with us the direction training is going and the reasons behind it.
