On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with actor, writer, and philanthropist Patricia Heaton. While Heaton has created relatable characters on TV over the years (“Everybody Loves Raymond,” “The Middle,” “Carol's Second Act”), she is also known for her commitment to philanthropy, as well as a love of food. As founder of an organization called 07C, which stands for October 7th Coalition, Heaton has been organizing a series of unity dinners, designed to bring Christians and Jews together in conversation. Recently, Heaton and O7C partnered with Maman Nonprofit for an event with The Dream Center Foundation in Los Angeles. “Sharing a meal together is a sign of peace and of unity ,” she says. “It's the perfect way to start helping our communities get to know each other.” For Heaton, growing up in an Irish Catholic family was a world away from the food she discovered, as a result of working in entertainment. She explains how she got a food education after moving to New York City; working with Phil Rosenthal (“Somebody Feed Phil”) only amplified it. (Deb previously interviewed Phil and Lily Rosenthal on Taste Buds for their children's book, “Just Try It!”) “Phil Rosenthal, who created “Everybody Loves Raymond,” [also] had a mom who wasn't a great cook,” she explains. “Even as a starving actor/writer in New York, he would save up money all year, and then for his birthday, he would take himself out to a very high end restaurant.” Rosenthal brought that same sensibility to “Everybody Loves Raymond.” “He also introduced me to the finer things in life, as far as cuisine was concerned,” Heaton explains. “It didn't start out that way, but eventually my adventures in the entertainment industry took me to all these great food places.” Heaton, whose books include “Your Second Act” and the autobiographical “Motherhood and Hollywood -- How to Get A Job Like Mine,” also has a cookbook: “Patricia Heaton's Food for Family and Friends.” Get Heaton's recipe for Chicken Chilaquiles at JewishJournal.com/podcasts. “For someone who works in an industry where everything is sort of ephemeral - you go in front of cameras, you do stuff, but the editor takes it away,” Heaton says. “You have no idea how it's going to turn out, you don't know if anybody's actually going to watch it. “It's great to be able to go into a kitchen, pull some ingredients together, start cooking,” she explains. “At the end of it, you have a meal and it actually is nourishing yourself and others; it's a very tangible thing.” Heaton talks about the O7C and her other interfaith experiences - including her first seder, her food and cooking evolution, and so much more. On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with singer and composer Craig Taubman. The founder of the Pico Union Project (PUP), a multi-faith cultural arts center in downtown Los Angeles, Taubman is passionate about food and nourishing the community. “Food is deep: it's cultural, it's philosophical, it's spiritual, it's nourishing,” Taubman believes. “[You] can use food to build community, to build relationships and to feed people's minds, hearts and souls.” According to Taubman, every week they distribute fresh produce that would have otherwise been thrown away. PUP provides 19 people in the community with jobs, offers cooking, nutrition and mental health classes, health services and more. “The food's great; the conversation is invaluable,” Taubman says. “Each time that we break bread together, we discover something new about each other, something powerful … we give the community the opportunity to flourish, and it's usually around food.” Taubman shares his background, and how the Pico Union Project came about, along with food memories, a food song, and his recipe for spicy Asian noodles. Get the recipe and read the article at JewishJournal.com/podcasts. Learn more about Craig Taubman PicoUnionProject.org and Craignco.com. Let your spirits soar through the spirit of Mohamed Fakih, who sees humanity as a race to be cherished, versus defined by tribes, and confined and contested by their ethnicity, religious beliefs, language, income or sexual preference. When I told Mohamed that I was airing the radio show on Christmas Eve, he smiled and said, 'I love Christmas.' Mohamed has spent the last two weeks working tirelessly to raise money to ensure families have a turkey dinner. That's who he is. The disadvantaged deserve to be advantaged. Mohamed was born in Lebanon and today is a Canadian citizen. Mohamed loves this country as much as anyone I have met in my travels. He is a gifted entrepreneur who founded the restaurant chain Paramount Fine Foods. Today he gives back by using his intellectual, emotional and financial capital to help in so many ways. If embodied, the insights and lessons Mohamed offers would lift Canadian society. They could counter the negative energy of social media that herd people into camps and fortify walls made of biases and disbelief. And Mohamed Fakih's spirit and enthusiasm, well, we all need a lift in a year where variants and viruses have once again diminished, even denying what we all need and deserve. And to all of you, especially those who can't get together because of COVID or circumstance. I wish there was a magic wand to wave you all together. What we all have that is magical and often tested is our human spirit. Yes, our world is upside down, and it can and will be righted with our collective positivity and possibility. Here's to better times and time together. Happy Humanity to all. This episode features an interview with Anna Barsby, Founder and Managing Partner at Tessiant, a UK-based management consultancy, and the former CIO of Asda. As a people and change leader, Anna has spent her career helping to build cultures through the implementation and adoption of technology. On this episode, Anna talks about the incredible opportunity of building a data system from scratch, what it was like to start her own organization during the pandemic, and how Asda recently partnered up with Dell to provide 7,000 laptops to school children in need.3 Takeaways:When it comes to technology, you've got to be very clear on the business outcome you're after and why you're using it. Technology for technology's sake will not bring an organization along, but articulating how it can get you to your goal faster, cheaper, and in a more productive way will.Similarly, technology works best when it brings teams together across an operation and helps build cultures of collaboration and trust. It falters when it is over-engineered and loses sight of what retailers fundamentally do.The challenge of overhauling an organization's systems is no small feat. For some, it is like rebuilding a plane in midair. For others, it is akin to being in a swivel chair needing to seamlessly transition users from one system to another. The opportunity is equal parts exciting and nerve-wracking and requires expertise on both a systems and business front.Key Quotes: “As a technologist, you have to talk to business people in their own language and about their outcomes. There is no point talking about the systems or even the data.”“I've seen examples in my past where some of the big consultancies have tried to over-engineer grocers or retailers....and several of the chief execs have said, ‘look, we're shopkeepers, and we've got to be good shopkeepers. The tech has its place and will absolutely enable, but don't lose sight of what we fundamentally do.'” “One of the reasons I keep coming back to retail is because with technology you're very close to the customer, and you're very close to your business colleagues, and you can see the impact that you make.”--This podcast is presented by Dell Technologies and Intel. Together they help you realize digital transformation across retail by driving IT innovation to better engage with today's connected consumer. Craig Kolavo leads readers on a spiritual odyssey that rivals the complexities of the Hero’s Journey, yet in an innovative and accessible way. The path is not simple and answers to questions not obvious; the journey is rife with tough lessons, epic battles and delusions and illusions that will test your resolve.Though make no mistake: Kolavo is an optimist and is living proof that this journey is possible for anyone and everyone to experience. Once surrender is attained, the realms of science and spirituality intersect harmoniously, leading to a sense of peace that unfolds even in turbulent times. With a trifold call to action, I Am God in Disguise invites the reader to become a player in the game of life by discovering their Divine Nature, surrendering to its power, and inspiring others on this journey. But what happens when we forget our innate powers? It’s all part of the plan, says Kolavo. It’s a necessary process of life, defined by the six stages he asserts we all eventually experience: Alien Birth, the School of Life, Discovery, Epic Battle, Surrender, and Inspire. The adage that it’s always darkest before dawn holds true, according to Kolavo. The presence of increased awareness in the world proves that positive change is on the horizon. As an optimist, Kolavo sees an opportunity that has emerged for humanity: it’s time to wake up from our collective spell of apathy and reclaim our power. When we end our inner battle through surrender, peace will soon follow in the outer world. Surrender transforms us, leading us to collaborate with Spirit via affirmations, visualization, meditation, and more. In keeping with one of the emain tenets of the book, being in service, 100% of the e-book's proceeds benefit Water.org. whose mission is to bring safe water and sanitation solutuions to those in need.

In this podcast episode, I talk with Sharon Avery the CEO of Toronto Foundation. Sharon is excited about being at the heart of philanthropy. In the show we talk about how she got into philanthropy. She tells the story of headed off to university thinking she would get into media. Instead, she became a fundraiser. She shares a powerful work experience, related to a past crush and how that experience changed her perspective on what she wanted to do with the rest of her life. We joke about how following love sometimes has profound impacts on our career trajectories. When we began to talk about having Disruptive Conversations, we discuss the challenge of getting your colleagues to work differently. Many of us have the experience of going to training or a workshop that inspires us to try new things at work. For most of us implementing these new ideas in our workplace can be a struggle. Throughout the show we talk about how her career has been peppered with challenging established norms to produce tangible outcomes. At Toronto Foundation, her new challenge is thinking about how she can bring innovative thinking to the organization. In this episode, she shares how she has learned to that by simplifying the message, focusing on learning and limiting choices she was able to get more engagement. From the interview, you can tell that Sharon is bold with her ideas, intentional and collaborative in the way she works. In being disruptive, she likes to bring people along with her on the journey. Before bringing ideas to life, she engages in a lot of inquiry before she dives into her initiatives. For her, it is important to take the time to find ready partners.Although she is new to her position, Sharon has an opportunity to disrupt affluence and unearth philanthropic dollars in new ways. It will be exciting to see Sharon develop in her role and I look forward to seeing how Toronto Foundations develops in the next few years.Links in the podcast:Toronto Foundation website: https://torontofoundation.ca/Toronto Foundation on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TorontoFdnFollow Sharon Avery on Twitter: https://twitter.com/s2avery
