Welcome to the Stupid Hearts Club! The Club for everyone with a Stupid Heart-------------------Greetings my Stupid Hearted angels. This episode of The Stupid Hearts Club Podcast features myself and anti-comedy king Mark Silcox enjoying a sumptuous Punjabi meal in central London on a sunny Friday afternoon and really getting under the bonnet of his comedy philosophy.I knew I was going to love catching up properly with Mark (which it turns out is a stage name, um...what?) but I had no idea just how deep my admiration would be for his journey from India, to unassuming science teacher to stalwart of the avant-garde UK comedy scene and Uncle Shady in Man Like Mobeen. This mans mind has to be heard to be believed (yes I'm reclaiming that tire old phrase for the pod world) and frankly I would happily have him on as a regular for his insight and disarming leftfield wit.EnjoooyyyyyyySilly Uncle Nicolasxx-------------------If you like the sociable little world I am buildings and you want to help support my efforts as well as get access to some cool extras, please take a look at my Patreon! And if you can't, or indeed just don't want to, then I'm still super happy you're here/ Also if you want to hear more from me I'm always putting things up on my Instagram, come and say hello-------------------Production support from Drew ToynbeeCopyright 2024 Nico Tatarowicz

Connor and Jack discuss the poem I.R.L. by New Zealand poet Chris Tse. They talk about how media representations and creations can cross into reality, the meaning of "gritty," and why S.O.S is so evocative. In the second part of the show they answer a listener question about how to know where to submit poetry. Connor recommends a study with new information about why certain areas are experience more suffering because of the pandemic, and Jack recommends "Reacher" on Amazon Prime, and "Man Like Mobeen" on Netflix. I.R.L. By: Chris Tse In real life you are aging at the rate of a short-lived sitcom and the only kind of loneliness worth laughing about is throwing out half a frozen meal for two because leftovers are never funnier the next day. In real life there is no such thing as a gritty reboot — it's just fucking gritty all the time, mate, because your best-laid plans are always someone else's chance to crash a car into the crowd at a men's rights charity concert. In real life the nice guys pull out of the race when their tires are slashed or they turn back because they think they left the iron on and no one adheres to sports film clichés anyway — we're all selfish and we want that trophy. In real life you'll never make it out of your homophobic small town alive, so your left hand begs for water while your right hand swings an ax your left foot drags a church bell while your right foot taps — S.O.S., S.O.S., S.O.S. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by one of the UK's shining acting stars KIELL SMITH-BYNOE!…but Kiell is not only an actor, as you shall find out. He's been putting in power moves all across the board for a minute, and maybe in a parallel universe we'd see him sharing stages with old mates Tinchy, Wiley and Skepta, but we're lucky enough to witness his rise on the screen. The grime model taught him well of course, as he became aware of what was possible in the wider world, and we get to hear how he plotted his course - originating in Newham - from Man Like Mobeen to Ghosts to Stath Lets Flats and much much more. And we also hear about a truly emotional on set catering experience. In this episode, Shabnum interviews British standup comedian and now book author Tez Ilyas about his book "The Secret Diary of a British Muslim Aged 13 3/4." Cycling through a variety of topics, Tez and Shabnum exchange childhood stories of growing up South Asian (Tez still can't believe Shabnum would use the word "rice" to describe what she's eating for dinner instead of "chawal"). Tez talks about racism in a post-Thatcher Britain, the after effects of 9/11 and the 7/7 attacks, and the effects of American politics on the world. They of course wrap up with more on Man Like Mobeen and the inspiration for the show. You won't want to miss this fun episode that touches on some very important topics about the British South Asian narrative from the hilarious Tez Ilyas! In the first episode of a new series, comedian Sindhu Vee invites guests to talk about their mothers. Guest across the series include Mae Martin, Guz Khan, Tom Allen and Jayde Adams. Lockdown is making us think a lot more about family, and for many people the parent-child relationship has been flipped. With the older generation more vulnerable to Coronavirus, middle-aged children are now worrying about where their parents are, and if they're behaving responsibly. We're telling them not to stay out late, to stay away from friends (especially those bad influences who won't wear masks), and to eat their vegetables. Sindhu Vee and her guests take a look at that bond, and ask whether the things their mothers taught them have set them up to cope with a global pandemic. This week, "Man Like Mobeen" star Guz Khan shares anecdotes about growing up with a strong matriarch, and what it's like to live next door to her now. Tez Ilyas is an award winning British comedian and actor who started comedy in 2010 as a hobby. He is regarded as one of most celebrated rising stars in British comedy. After studying biochemistry at university, Tez went on to work as a civil servant for a decade. He was told by his friends that he was quite funny, so he started to speak at open mic events in London and soon discovered that he was quite good at stand-up comedy! Tez left his job to pursue show business full time and achieved phenomenal success with his debut tour, Tez Talks, followed by his own series on BBC based on his show. In 2016, his highly anticipated follow up show, Made in Britain, debuted at the infamous Edinburgh Festival Fringe and went on to sell out every performance. In 2018, Tez toured with his latest show, Teztify, which he also performed at the prestigious venue, Live at the Apollo. Tez also appears on the hit BBC show, Man Like Mobeen, where he plays the character ‘Eight’. On the show today, we talk about how Tez stumbled into comedy, dealing with nerves on the stage, transitioning from stand-up to acting, and so much more! Please excuse our giggles and laughter but it was too hard to resist laughing at Tez’s jokes throughout this episode. If you liked this episode, please leave us a review on Apple Podcast. Welcome, welcome, welcome to episode 286 of the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! A grand chat this week with standup comic, show host and mate of Guz Khan, it’s TEZ ILYAS!“let them come on the journey...”Hitting on many angles this week of all things comedy, shows, politics, geography and race, Pip and Tez go full on at all this and more from the comfort of a hotel room. I wonder how many hotel rooms are being used as makeshift podcast studios right now… Anyway - awesome stuff as Tez drops science upon so much - Guz’s ‘Man Like Mobeen’, his own ‘Tez O’ Clock’ show, Fringe experiences be they good or bad, hitting it off with Pip on Twitter (the platform upon which they both go IN on later on in the podcast!), being a very proficient dancer, the immigrant mentality, being exposed to middle class white Britain, reading ahead of his level but plateauing, joining a standup comedy course, developing those comedy chops over time, letting people make the leap with references and the art of relatability, his stint in the home office, wokeness and politics, achievement trumping politics in the Asian community, his friendship with Guz and working relationship, the importance of finding good people to work with and the camaraderie that is needed, and whether it’s possible to develop a pro-Brexit monologue for his own show! I caught up with the one and only Tez Ilyas, ahead of his set at Latitude’s Comedy Arena. Tez is one of the break out stars of British comedy with TV appearances on ‘Live at the Apollo’, ‘Mock The Week’, ‘The Last Leg’, ‘Man Like Mobeen’ and ‘Bounty’. We talked about his brand new TV show, festival experiences, that night he cleared the arena and why he can’t organise the Christmas party. You can catch Tez’s brand new TV show, The Tez O’clock Show, on channel 4 every Thursday night from 11pm. The satirical news show is a fast-paced mix of stand-up, sketches and studio antics, including provocative monologues and celebrity interviews hosted and anchored by Tez Ilyas, a northern working-class British Asian-Muslim and it’s set to blow the cobwebs off TV satire.
WE ARE BACK!! In scenes reminiscent of David Copperfield levitating the Grand Canyon, we have also pulled off the almost-impossible task of recording a BRAND NEW episode of The Native Immigrants Podcast! Season Two is finally here, and no amount of dirty nappies, vomit-soaked bibs or drenched sleepsuits was going to stop us! In our first show in 6 months, we discuss we've been up to during our break... and realise very quickly, that a break is exactly what we badly need! We look back at numerous TV shows that have occurred during our absence, including Man Like Mobeen, The Great British School Swap and The Massacre That Shook The Empire, together with festivals and events such as Southall's recent March Against Unity. Special thanks to our brudda Niraj Chag for providing this season's brand new theme music! Listen in here and PLEASE subscribe/rate/review us... to stop the Man shutting us down! Making it just in time for last call this week is the one and only Tez Ilyas. Tez is one of the stars of hit sitcom Man Like Mobeen and has appeared on Mock the Week, The Last Leg and so much more. He has also written and starred in his own scripted comedy shorts for BBC Three, BBC iPlayer and Sky Arts and we are absolutely delighted he chose to drink with us. Tez ordered mocktails for the night - Masud treated the bar to…Sweet Sunshine4oz Orange Juice½ oz GrenadineOrange SliceFill a highball glass with ice and orange juice. Slowly pour the Grenadine over, it will sink. Garnish with orange slice. Sundowner4oz Grape Juice2 ½ oz Sparkling Water1 Mint Sprig to GarnishIn a highball glass with ice pour over the grape juice then sparkling water. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint. At the Mystery on the Rocks bar you’ll find a retired sleuth, the bartender trying to settle his tab, and the down-on-her-luck lounge singer, solving mysteries and drinking cocktails. Each week a new guest enters the bar and attempts to solve an unsolved mystery alongside the regulars. Hosted by Masud Milas, Chris Stokes, and Sooz Kempner. It’s a high concept comedy and true crime podcast, set in a fictional crime-solving bar (with real cocktails!). The focus of the show is to attempt to crack a real, unsolved mystery from history – true crime and bizarre occurrences, all with a whodunnit or WTF happened question hanging over them. Masud makes the drinks, Chris tells the mystery and Sooz sings and plays live piano – and everyone chats and chimes in with their theories. You can follow us on Twitter and Instagram too! This is a Studio71 production. BBC Three's new comedy Man Like Mobeen has made a big impact through social media. BBC Birmingham director Joe Godwin spoke to executive producer Ben Cavey, as well as star and co-writer Guz Khan, to find out about the making of the programme. Man Like Mobeen is set in Small Heath, Birmingham. The production team felt it was important to film in, and cast from, the local community to give the show an authentic feel. The programme set out to tackle negative media representations and give a voice to an often under-represented community. The four-part series tackles a number of challenging issues, such as clashes between the Muslim community and the alt-right. These themes clearly suit BBC Three's core ambitions: make you think, make you laugh, give you a voice. In this podcast you'll learn: - how to develop a comedy character from scratch - about different ways to break into TV comedy production - why it's important for the media to reflect a diverse range of backgrounds and identities - how Guz used YouTube to build a comedy career whilst working as a humanities teacher in Coventry
WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is episode 185, we’re getting DEEP in the episodes now… A Brum phenomenon takes us through this one, a full on slammer of an episode featuring man like comedian and actor GUZ KHAN!Mad entertaining from start to end, as Pip sits down with Guz for a truly matey chat but which brings out the best of both! They were first acquainted back around a year ago on set on the upcoming ‘Walk Like A Panther’, where they behaved like naughty schoolkids on set by all accounts, and this is a catchup / roundup / ahead look at what Guz is involved with - a huge amount it turns out, and a wide range of topics get handled, such as Guz being new to the whole celebrity life and how surreal it can be (down to the weirdness of having a team), the importance of vibes on set and getting on with the crew, how he was essentially raised by three strong women and how that shaped his personality and humour, the art of storytelling, outrage vs laughing it off, teaching and how moments of discussion and clarity are so important to catch and build on, getting the tone right in filming in his hometown and creating a friendly space to do so, and just a whole ton more… Oh, and his new show ‘Man Like Mobeen’ on BBC3!
