Today we chat with Mark Putnam, a national media strategist and ad maker for over three decades, and founder of the media firm Putnam Partners. His work bridges the political and non-political worlds, serving as one of President Obama's lead ad makers and the lead ad maker for President Biden's "Unite the Country" super PAC, as well as helping elect 11 governors, 10 U.S. senators and dozens of members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Mark has created some of the most talked-about political advertising campaigns of the last decade, including the "Background Checks" TV ad featuring U.S. Senate candidate Jason Kander assembling an AR-15 assault weapon while blindfolded that Politico called "the most memorable ad of 2016." Mark's viral video for congressional candidate and former CIA operative Valerie Plame was likened to a "spy thriller campaign ad" by Slate Magazine. Mark also produced advertising to help elect Doug Jones in the 2017 Alabama special election for U.S. Senate. Mark's advertising for breakout congressional candidate and Internet phenomenon Amy McGrath set the standard for viral political advertising in 2018 - earning millions of YouTube views and sparking dozens of national news stories. Mark's firm also helped elect 16 new members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018 – more wins than any other Democratic media firm - and helped re-elect 12 incumbents in 2020, ranging from 10 U.S. Representatives, the Governor of North Carolina and the Mayor of Richmond, VA. Mark's highest profile project was creating Barack Obama's 2008 election eve 30-minute television special that aired simultaneously on seven networks and was viewed by over 35 million people. The Washington Post television critic Tom Shales called it "somehow both poetic and practical, spiritual and sensible... a montage of montages, a series of seamlessly blended segments." https://www.putnampartners.net/ https://www.vimeo.com/putnampartners

How do you make a campaign ad that voters actually want to watch? We're discussing that critical question on this week's episode of "The Downballot" with leading Democratic ad-maker Mark Putnam, who's been responsible for some of the most memorable spots in recent years. Putnam details his creative process, which always starts with spending time with candidates to truly learn their story—and scouting locations in-depth. He then walks us through the production of the famous Jason Kander-assembles-a-gun-blindfolded ad that went viral and explains why, believe it or not, you always want footnotes in your attack ads.Co-hosts David Nir and David Beard also look ahead to next week's elections, headlined by the bitter GOP primary (is there any other kind?) in the Kentucky governor's race; the free-for-all Democratic primary to serve as Philadelphia's next mayor; and the special election in the Philly suburbs that could determine whether Democrats keep control of the state House. Plus: the ACLU's new effort to place an amendment on the ballot in Florida that would enshrine abortion rights into the state constitution.Transcript can be found here.

When rookie FBI agent Mark Putnam received his first assignment in 1987, it was the culmination of a lifelong dream, if not the most desirable location. Pikeville, Kentucky, is high in Appalachian coal country, an outpost rife with lawlessness dating back to the Hatfields and McCoys. As a rising star in the bureau, however, Putnam soon was cultivating paid informants and busting drug rings and bank robbers. But when one informant fell in love with him, passion and duty would collide with tragic results. A coal miner’s daughter, Susan Smith was a young, attractive, struggling single mother. She was also a drug user sometimes described as a con artist, thief, and professional liar. Ultimately, Putnam gave in to Smith’s relentless pursuit. But when he ended the affair, she waged a campaign of vengeance that threatened to destroy him. When at last she confronted him with a shocking announcement, a violent scuffle ensued, and Putnam, in a burst of uncontrolled rage, fatally strangled her. Though he had everything necessary to get away with murder—a spotless reputation, a victim with multiple enemies, and the protection of the bureau’s impenetrable shield—his conscience wouldn’t allow it. Tormented by a year of guilt and deception, Putnam finally led authorities to Smith’s remains. This is the story of what happened before, during, and after his startling confession.Revised and updated, this book also includes photos and a new epilogue by the author. Retired agent Jim Huggins served in the FBI for 28 years. During his Bureau career, Huggins was assigned to the Minneapolis, Denver and Louisville Divisions, in addition to special assignments on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation during the Wounded Knee takeovers in 1973 and again in 1975 and during the RESMURS investigation of the murder of two FBI agents Jack Coler and Ron Williams. In this episode of FBI Retired Case File Review, Jim Huggins is interviewed about his investigation of FBI agent Mark Putnam, a new agent assigned to a two-man resident agency in Pikeville, Kentucky, high in Appalachian coal country.  Based primarily on Huggins ability to elicit a confession, Putnam pled guilty and was convicted of strangling is his pregnant informant, Susan Daniels Smith, in a fit of rage. While assigned to the Louisville Division, Huggins also conducted or supervised many of Kentucky’s biggest corruption investigations.  He served as the supervisor of the Lexington Resident Agency from 1986 until his retirement. After retiring from the FBI, Jim Huggins was appointed by the Kentucky Attorney General as Director of Investigations for the Public Corruption Unit, where he worked for seven years. Recently, Huggins was hired as a technical advisor for Above Suspicion, the feature film based on the non-fiction book of the same name that depicts the tragic saga of Mark Putnam and Susan Smith.
