Tune in here to this Wednesday edition of Breaking With Brett Jensen! Breaking Brett Jensen kicks off the show by outlining a situation involving Mecklenburg County Commissioner Yvette Townsend-Ingram. According to Jensen, an order for her arrest was issued Feb. 5, 2025, stemming from her failure to comply with court requirements related to a 2024 arrest in Gaston County for driving while impaired. Once Ingram pleaded guilty, she was given three months to complete 24 hours of community service. However, Jensen reports that she did not complete the required community service, which led to the order for her arrest. Jensen then speaks with Gaston County District Attorney Travis Page to clarify the legal situation. Page confirms that she was convicted of DWI in Gaston County and says his office treats DWI offenses seriously. He underscores that Ingram’s status as a county commissioner does not afford her special treatment. Listen here for all of this and more on Breaking With Brett Jensen. Tune in here to this Thursday edition of Breaking With Brett Jensen! Breaking Brett Jensen opens the show by discussing the Mecklenburg County sheriff’s debate held Wednesday night at the Dubois Center in uptown Charlotte. The debate, which featured four candidates for sheriff, began with tough questions about alleged wrongdoing by incumbent Sheriff Gary McFadden and quickly led to tense exchanges. The most pointed moments involved former Chief Deputy Rodney Collins, who accused McFadden of poor leadership and a lack of competence. Several back-and-forth exchanges highlighted personal tensions between McFadden and Collins, particularly over promotions and leadership credibility. Jensen notes that the moderators managed the escalating exchanges professionally, allowing candidates to fully respond. The debate also addressed concerns about staffing shortages and jail overcrowding, issues some candidates said have been exacerbated by current law. In this solo episode, Darin dives into one of the most universal modern experiences: the feeling that time is accelerating. Drawing from neuroscience, psychology, cognitive science, and lived experience, he breaks down why time doesn't actually speed up, but our experience of it radically changes. Breaking Brett Jensen opens the show by discussing a press conference held today by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on 2025 crime statistics. The event was led by new CMPD Chief Estella Patterson, who reported an overall 21% drop in violent crime within city limits and a 13% decrease in homicides. Jensen questioned CMPD during the press conference, citing data he said shows a 27% increase in homicides over the past six months. He said the contrast highlights how CMPD crime reports can be misleading when viewed without additional context. Jensen is also joined in the studio by Charlotte resident Jeffrey Baldwin, who has been involved in a legal dispute with his homeowners association. The situation began in 2022, when Baldwin was fined by the HOA, leading to a three-year legal battle. Baldwin said he later learned the association had placed a lien on his home. He ultimately received an official hearing on Jan. 13, and discusses the details and outcome of the case in an exclusive interview. Those interested in supporting homeowners association reform in North Carolina can visit saferhoa.com. The show concludes with Jensen speaking with Brian Peter, Vice President of Mixed Beverages and Logistics for Mecklenburg County ABC. Peter previews a follow-up to November’s “Barrel-Palooza” event, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 17, at Store No. 9 on Graham St. in Charlotte. In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the reasons that some people who are raised in the Christian faith choose to walk away from it, while others remain committed Christ followers. As you can imagine, the faith of the parents and how that's fleshed out in their lives is a huge factor. Episode Links At the top of the episode, Alexis noted that today's topic was prompted by Pew Research Center's “Religious Landscape Study” - a landmark study and truly the gold standard of its kind. Religion News Service picked up on part of the study in a recent article titled, “Why do some people stay in their faith and others leave? A Pew report offers clues.” You can read that article HERE. Both Alexis and Dr. White mentioned that other findings from the “Religious Landscape Study” have been the topic of other podcast discussions and the Church & Culture blog. Here is where you can find those on the Church & Culture website: CCP141: On the Largest, Most Recent Survey of American Religion “The Stall of the Nones” “Gen Z Church Attendance” “A Revival... or a Moment?” Dr. White noted that research from Dr. Christian Smith has been insightful in netting out the huge role that parents play in the faith of their children. You can explore his “National Study of Youth & Religion” HERE. As a father of four and grandfather of 16, Dr. White is passionate about the role of parents in the lives of their children. You can find sermon series that he's given at Mecklenburg Community Church on parenting HERE. Dr. White referenced articles and interviews with Derek Thompson and Richard Dawkins regarding the idea that Christianity is not about a religion, but rather a relationship with Jesus. And that relational component is what's missing from some churches. Here are those stories for you: Derek Thompson, “The True Cost of the Churchgoing Bust,” The Atlantic, read online. LBC video post of Richard Dawkins on X, watch here. Walter Sánchez Silva, “Famous Atheist Richard Dawkins Says He Considers Himself a ‘Cultural Christian,'” Catholic News Agency, read online. Finally, Dr. White discussed the importance of apologetics when it comes to the Christian faith - knowing why you believe what you believe. He has given a number of series at Meck that are incredibly helpful in this arena. You can find them all gathered under the category of “Exploring Christianity” HERE. For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday. The petition must then be approved by either a district attorney or a county attorney, before being sent to court, which ultimately determine what is required for approval. Later, Jensen asks Merriweather about the impact of the recently enforced Iryna’s Law on his office.

In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the results of a multi-year study of about 24,000 church attenders that was conducted by the Hartford Institute for Religion Research. The goal was to examine their church engagement. A particular finding stood out, which was that 46% of those 24,000 churchgoers reported active engagement with more than one church. For purposes of the study, they defined “active engagement” as attending in person, watching online or on TV, or taking part in both physical and virtual offerings. So this begs the question: What drives people to want to participate in a variety of church services? Episode Links During today's discussion, Dr. White outlined three categories of churchgoers: the church hopper, the church shopper and the church dropper. He also wrote a blog about this topic titled “Church Hopping, Shopping and Dropping,” which you can read HERE. It's also important to have a clear understanding of what Church is meant to be, and how we are called to engage with the community of the local church. Dr. White delivered a two-week series at Mecklenburg Community Church called “This Is Us,” which outlined the values and the mission of Meck. And then another incredibly helpful series was simply titled “Being Church” and explored what true biblical community looks like. You can find that series HERE.

In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the new animated film on Netflix that has everyone talking. It's called “KPop Demon Hunters,” and was an instant success when it was released back in June. It's gained so much momentum that it was shown in a limited release on the big screen - just for two days and in only 1,700 theaters - in a sing-along format. Despite that limited release, it still won the entire box office for the weekend, giving Netflix its first number one box office title in its 18-year history. Several songs from its soundtrack are simultaneously in the Billboard Top 10. So… what in the world is “KPop Demon Hunters” about, and is this something our kids should be watching? The answers might surprise you. Episode Links Given that the movie has the word “demon” in the title, it's not surprising that today's conversation raised issues regarding the paranormal world. Dr. White gave a series at Mecklenburg Community Church (Meck) called “Paranormal” that you may be interested in checking out - particularly the installment that maps out the spiritual world. You can find that series on Church & Culture HERE. Dr. White mentioned that when it comes to what you allow your kids to watch, including this movie, what's most important is to seize the opportunity to have really good spiritual conversations with your kids. He referenced a recent blog written by our MecKidz team - the children's program at Meck. The blog is titled “‘KPop Demon Hunters': How to Engage Movies and TV with your Kids,” and can be found HERE.
