Matt Fiddes is multi-skilled, multi-faceted entrepreneur, often first known for being Michael Jackson's bodyguard, he is a very successful businessman in his own right and created the biggest martial arts franchise in the world! Join Rob and Matt as they talk about all things business, discuss the many rumours around Matt's life and of course Michael Jackson! KEY TAKEAWAYS Michael Jackson was brainwashed as a child, he was taught to not be open emotionally, especially to the public. This impacted how he built relationships and interacted with the world for the rest of his life. Michael always kept everyone guessing, with the one glove or makeup or even a mask. He said these things guaranteed publicity, it kept people talking about him. Behind closed doors he was pretty much like anyone else, just normal. Matt found this transformation innovative and exciting. It's what we now call great branding and something most famous people and businesses do without question. Rob compares Michael and his flare for being memorable was similar in style to the likes of Andy Warhol and Alexander McQueen. Michael Jackson didn't embrace the digital transformation that had begun in music before his death. In some ways, Matt believes he would have struggled with the world as it is now but Michael would at least be able to address rumours head on via social media and speak to his fans directly. Something he was unable to do whilst he was alive. A few people know that Michael Jackson bought Eminem's back catalogue as a comeback to Eminem mocking MJ in his Music Video for the song Just Lose It. This hinted at the ruthless streak Michael occasionally had, further demonstrated by when he bought the rights to The Beatles music and would somewhat taunt Paul McCartney about it. Matt struggled in school, he was bullied and struggled with writing especially but rather than letting it hold him back it's what gave him the fire in his belly to do more with his life. It gave him the hunger to thrive, he wanted to prove everyone and the world wrong. Matt knew he wanted to run his own Martial Arts school. Matt took some time to really think about how he could make it work. He knew he wanted to do something different and really disrupt the industry. After hearing about how different the Martial Arts Schools were in America, Matt Fiddes saved for a ticket and flew over to go to a Martial Art Conference in San Francisco. After this he was taken under the wing of the American organiser who introduced him to many people and taught him everything he knew. He then went back to the UK and really started change things, including the use of standing orders for paying, providing real education in sessions and adding music to the classes; all at just 18 years old. Matt is a great believer in the law of attraction, wherever you put your energy is where you are going to flow. You often don't see behind the scenes of entrepreneurs but the difficulties they face happen often and is all very real. Matt has had to deal with his own share of hate, rumours and negativity. 2009 was a hell of a year for Matt. Michael Jackson died, he went through a divorce, his mum died; he ended up being prescribed anti-depressants and Valium. It was a challenging time but he came out the other side stronger and happier by focusing on his next steps and goals. Martial arts taught Matt discipline and everything else he needed to be successful. He wouldn't have found success in the same way without it. BEST MOMENTS “I just thought it was normal for18 year olds to be hanging around with Michael [Jackson] and all his friends” “Michael Jackson is a fascinating person to study because he clearly knew how to get people to remember him and talk about him” “I wanted to make sure, that anything I wanted my students to do, I could do” “The bullying, the childhood, lead to everything else. So today, I have a special guest with me: Edward Carr from New Hampshire in the United States. And so, Edward owns two locations, Tokyo Joe Studios and Team Link MMA, both at the same actual location, in the same facility, on two separate floors. So, we chat a bit about that divide, and also how he's built a thriving business. 320-330 plus students, mostly on word of mouth. And, look, always when someone says word of mouth, I'm always curious, because it always means there's a strong program, a strong product, and much more to it, right? And so we chat a lot about things that they've done in the community, their community promotions, also his book against anti-bullying, that positions him as an authority. And all this, how it helped them thrive through the pandemic, and almost not losing any students after being locked down for a full year. So, we're going to jump into that.If you are new to the podcast, do check out on this page martialartsmedia.com/126, depending where you're listening or watching, and be sure to download our ebook, ‘The Ultimate Facebook™ Guide for Martial Arts Schools', that will help you create your next winning ad campaign. And of course, wherever you're listening or watching, make sure you hit that subscribe button, so that you get notified when we release our next episode.Alright, let's get into it. So, Edward, over the last couple of months, or just in general, what's been the top marketing strategy and lead generator for you?EDWARD: It would be a lot of word of mouth, a lot of word of mouth and online. You know, some online advertising definitely helped out, but the word of mouth has been incredible- with all the students promoting, you know, the school and, you know, me being involved in the schools a lot, also has helped out quite a bit, you know.Just like I said, just promoting and having fun, and, you know, going from there. And just letting the kids know, you know, letting everyone know, you know, what we're doing, what we're about, promoting safety, you know. Letting them know, like, even though the pandemic, you know, people are still nervous, you know, having all the safety stations everywhere, and all that.Just making everyone feel comfortable, and then having them go out and telling all their friends, “This is a place to go to exercise and have fun”, and, you know, how do kids learn...

Welcome to the Martial Arts Media™ business podcast. Today's special guest is Ross Cameron from Fightcross MMA in Brisbane, Australia. Now, Ross and I go way back, we've been working together for quite some time, and I've been fortunate enough to witness his business explode from the sidelines.Just recently, he's opened up his new location, and let me tell you what, it's not just any location. We were on one of our Partners Power Hour calls, our coaching calls, and Ross took us on a virtual tour through the location – we're going to include a virtual tour on this page as well. But he took us through the whole location, and just the multiple floors, the different aspects, the bar, the coffee shop, and of course, the world class gym.So, we break down just the whole process of the two to three years that it took to put this together, the obstacles that he faced, with obviously things like COVID, things that weren't expected. And we do a deep dive into the technicalities of how to set up your contracts, how to structure your staffing, and a lot of the details that often go missed when opening up a new location. And then we do a bit of a deep dive on marketing and how he's gone about marketing this new location and the plan on filling it up to 500 to 1000 members over the next 12 months. All right, let's jump in. Ross, what's been the top marketing strategy or campaign that you've run lately? What's been the highest performance?ROSS: So, the best one we've had recently, because we've been moving into a new gym, has been our foundation membership drive, with Facebook and video and all the rest of it. And based around that, was a box that we gave away that had different items inside it. We had samples from some of our suppliers, we had a towel from the gym, we had a water bottle, we had a mouth guard, all the little bits and pieces to make them feel comfortable and give them some added value to signing on.GEORGE: Great! So, what was the offer for the foundational...
Even if you're biased like I am between free or paid martial arts trials, this might make you reconsider where one might be more useful than the other.IN THIS EPISODE: What's the purpose of a trial class anyways? Why what happens before the actual enquiry mattersWhen to use a free trial and a paid trial offer?Intent-based vs Interruption-based marketingWhat differences to consider when marketing on Facebook and Google And more*Need help growing your martial arts school? Learn More Here. TRANSCRIPTIONHey, George Fourie here. Welcome to the Martial Arts Media™ business podcast. In this episode, I'm going to be talking about a martial arts marketing age-old dilemma: free trials versus paid trials, which one should you be using in your social media, in your Facebook ads, your Google ads, your promotions, and so forth. So, I'm going to break it down, and the answer is actually not as straightforward as you might think, especially if you're getting good results with free trials or paid trials, and you are kind of biased towards the other. So, there's actually a place for both. So, I'm going to break down where you could potentially use the paid trial, the free trials, and a bit of the science and the logic behind why you should be using it, at which area in your marketing. Stick around to the end, I'll share with you how to, where you can download our free resource, ‘The Ultimate Facebook™ guide for Martial Arts Schools', that will help you create your next winning ad. Alright, let's jump in. So, before we dive into details of free versus paid trials, I think it's important to just discuss why a trial in the first place? I mean, we're not in the business of free and paid trials, right? We're in the business of signing up students; and if a student stays with us for one year to two years to three years, I mean, that's really where things are at, right? So, why not just go for the marriage proposal straight-up, instead of the drink at the bar? Well, it's really just that, right? We kind of need to start with the drink at the bar. So, what is the drink at the bar? Well, we can use a different analogy for that. But you get what I'm saying, right? So, free trial, paid trial, which is going to work best? Well, it's going to depend on what happens before the trial. So, how are they actually entering into your world? And where are the inquiries coming from? So, let's take the first example. Let's say somebody walks into your school, they walk into your school, and the conversation goes, “Hey, I'm, you know, been walking past the school and had a look at your website and had a look at- I've seen your posts on social media, and I wouldn't mind giving it a try and seeing if it will work for me.” So, what do you do in that situation? Well, you could present your paid trial, if that's something that you do. But what if a person like that is not keen to pay something just yet? And they just want to try it out? And maybe it's not the money at all, it's just, they just want to give it a go. They're just not sure, right? What would you do in that scenario? Is it- should you be enforcing a paid trial? You could… or why not just give away a free trial and let them try it out, right? Because whether they, I mean, the hard work is done – they've actually walked through the door. From there, you know, how they get to being a member, is really up to you and your sales process, and we'll talk a bit more about that as well. In a sense of that, that's where a free trial could work great, right? Somebody walked in, and they just wanted to give it a try..

Dan & Paco had an amazing time sitting with Anthony Brito to chat, catch up and discuss the great 2008 movie Redbelt and what a great chat it was! This is the first of an upcoming series on movie reviews produced here at Irstad Recordings. In this episode we delve deep into storytelling, the evolution of standards for Martial Arts Schools, the connection between handicaps limitations and Martial Arts training, and many more thought provoking topics! We want to thank Anthony Brito for his time, thoughts and inspiration. Anthony was our first guest back at the beginning of last year and due to the pandemic the only one so far to sit in person in our wonderful Studio (Irstad). Anthony was the most popular guest to date, and he's a practitioner of Brazilian JiuJitsu and a wonderful human being.Note: towards the end we mention a group of Aikido practitioners that have devised amazingly honest drills to test and improve their skills and we describe some of the their drills with markers. We were referring to Aikido: Discussed and their approach to their Martial Art.At a different point in the chat we mentioned a system of wrestling developed by the people of Northern China (and Russia). We were actually referring to Mongolian Wrestling. Send us any questions or comments at info@athousandexits.com! Be safe everyone, bend your legs, plant your feet, relax and let's go!

Mr. Daniele Bolelli is a martial arts practitioner and instructor from Italy. He teaches in CSULB and Santa Monica College. If all you train for in Martial Arts is to become a good fighter, I think you missed the boat. I think there's much more interesting stuff in terms of personal development that comes from training Martial Arts. Effective technique is certainley impoirtanant but it's not the end-all be-all of it. Mr. Daniele Bolelli - Episode 568 Starting a journey early in the 90s without the internet and relying only on vague descriptions of what Martial Arts Schools offer in the yellow pages, might not be the best motivator at that time. It was not the case for Mr. Daniele Bolelli who just thought, why not? Starting out to train in Italy and then a whole world of Martial Arts Schools was revealed to him as he went to California, Mr. Bolelli had trained with a handful of disciplines and then now focusing on combat sports. You will smash the hell out of your competition by communicating better with your customers, students and clients. The one thing that will make the biggest difference in your business in 2019, 2020 and beyond, is the relationships you build. Martial Arts Schools are a relationship business and nothing with serve you better than one to one communication with your students, customers, staff, followers and fans. In today’s episode, Gordon urges you to make one to one communication a key marketing strategy for the new year, to serve people at a higher level by building great relationships with them. KEY TAKEAWAYS The biggest difference in your business in the coming years will all be about, how you build your relationships because in the world of social media that we live in today, we've lost our identity as social humans. Where you will win in your business is human to human contact and the relationships that you'll build Most kids now are disengaged and can't communicate. We live in a deluded world, but it's a good thing because when you strip it all back and we physically communicate you will see a connection. Regardless of online communication, you can not beat physical communication, listening, learning and asking great questions. That's where we connect and form a relationship. The first thing you need to do is get people into your school and connect with them one to one. But what you can do, is leverage the power of social media by introducing yourself via a Facebook live or talking to them online. Relationships start by meeting online and from there you can build a better relationship one to one. When someone joins your school they're joining your family. Build a relationship with them so that it's lasting, worthwhile and that you can solve their goals and as a result, purchase your classes and courses. BEST MOMENTS “The initial connection is online, where you're educating others and serving your audiences.” "Ask great questions and be an amazing listener" “How you build relationships comes down to how people see you and how open and honest you are.” “People will buy from people that they know, trust and like.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Gordon Burcham - The Business Of Martial Arts ABOUT THE HOST Gordon Burcham is the best selling author, 3 x World martial arts champion and award-winning Martial arts school owner. Running a Martial Arts school is simple but not easy and if you do it all yourself you’ll go INSANE. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. As Martial Arts school owners you need to be hiring staff so that we can focus on the things that we love, this is fundamental to our schools growth. Staff are the biggest asset in your business, in your life, to your school and to your finances and in today’s episode Gordon explains how you can secure the right staff for your business. Connect with Gordon by contacting him here Learn, evolve and grow and you will absolutely succeed. KEY TAKEAWAYS I used to think no one could do it as well as me, I was afraid of giving away control. It's INSANE if you think that you can do everything in your school yourself. I didn't employ staff because I didn't want to lose control and even when I did hire staff I would micro-manage them and pick holes in everything they did. It's a delusion to think with 7 billion people on the planet that you cannot find good staff. What you perceive as having bad staff in the past is down to the way you recruited them and trained them. As Martial Arts school owners we try to make it work without staff. We'll end up exchanging free training for help, but never taking on staff. We need to stop that mindset and take on the right people to allow you to work on your business, not in your business. If you're still a small school and want to grow it, you need to take on staff. Don't simply do everything yourself because you think you can't afford staff. You will never grow and you will never be able to afford staff if you don't embrace it in the beginning. Staff earn you money, they don't cost you money. Staff give you the freedom to work on your school. Don't be a slave and do everything yourself. Only do the things that you love in your business and hire staff to do the rest. Start small and build big. Cherry pick the staff around you and begin thinking about the amount of time that you have free and start to allow your staff to free up more of your time. BEST MOMENTS “Get the staff that are experts in the things you are not. Hiring staff transformed my life and transformed my business” "We only value something that we exchange money on." "Every business has staff, you need them to succeed" "I was deluded for so many years and I don't want it to be you. Staff earn you money, they don't cost you money" “The first best hire that you can have is the one that does the job you hate the most” “If you treat your school as a hobby it will cost you like one. If you treat it as a business it will pay you like one.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Gordon Burcham - The Business Of Martial Arts ABOUT THE HOST Gordon Burcham is the best selling author, 3 x World martial arts champion and award-winning Martial arts school owner.
