Daniel talks about his recent updates to Black Ink, for both Mac and iOS. He and Manton compare notes about updating icons for iOS 18 to support Dark and Tinted home screen modes. They talk about application versioning, again!, and the virtue of choosing to do things one way sometimes just because it's right. They react to recent speculation about the identity of the inventor of Bitcoin, and whether it's responsible for anybody to make such allegations. Finally, they talk a bit more about AI, what it means for the future of programming, and it's impact on the world's approach to manufacturing energy. Host, Andy Goram talks to James Lawrence, CEO of Happy Companies about how to give everybody in an organisation the benefit of personalised, contextualised coaching. Being raised by two parents who were psychologists, James always had a fascination with the mind. That coupled with an entrepreneurial spirit and a bunch of failures as a leader, and then seeing the impact of a personal, executive coach, inspired James to try and find a way to bring that same benefit he got, to the masses. ----more---- Key Takeaways The secrets to improving organizational culture. HOORAY FOR SPRING! We dive into Aries season and all it has to offer us March 19th - April 18th 2024. As well as the overall energetics for Spring in the northern hemisphere and Fall in the southern hemisphere March 19th - June 19th 2024 + Happy Astrological New Year! This is a big shift. An important transition. And in my opinion the most fun time of the year. Aries season always welcomes the high energy, impatient, competitive, ambitious, confident, bravery as we say goodbye to the moody, dreamy, artistic, romantic, creative, emo, grief, empathic, sensitive, idealistic adaptability of Pisces season. This transition has us taking the release and healing we got in Pisces season…as well as all the evaluation we've been doing since the fall about what works, what has never worked and what we want moving forward….Aries season supports us to finally start the new things we've been sitting on, thinking about, plotting and planning. We won't reach all the goals in this season. We probably won't see manifestation this cycle, but we start, we leap, we sprint a fair distance into them. Fire is welcomed back to the chart, to the energetics and fire is magic. It's an exciting time meant for taking risks and attempting things we've not tried before. The risks are supported! Not a yolo type of risk but calculated risks…that we've been weaving through and around since Libra season, September 2023. It's a long time, but it's the synthesis and understanding of your life lived last year. Aries season asks us to rebirth ourselves, better, stronger, more empowered, and confident…because of the digging, thinking, feeling, shadow work and exploration we've been willing to do. It's not random action. Exalted, wise, Aries is not impulsive. Under Evolved Aries is impulsive, implosive, and definitely does not think about the long game…..but balanced Aries…now that's a whole other story we are learning and growing into particularly in this cycle. Let's break it down. In this Aries season: It's eclipse season Mercury is in pre shadow March 19th - Sun enters Aries March 22nd - mars enters Pisces March 25th - Full moon lunar eclipse (penumbral) in Libra April 1 - Mercury Stations Rx April 5 - Venus enters Aries April 8 - New moon solar eclipse (total) in Aries This cycle - Aries season - and for this community's purpose also an umbrella for all of spring. as a whole it's going to be a bit wild. Communication is going to be taxed, shifted, weird, and wonky. Both internal and external. And yet there's so much that offers expressions of communication and growth. Clarity. Brashness. Honesty at a whole other level from yourself and to others. There can be self trust here like never before and you function off of that. It won't always be received well by others. It's a time to take the weird way (isn't it always, around here). A time to not overthink things. Check in with the body, how do you FEEL? Check in with the brain, what do you think? Whats YOUR truth of the situation…..take action based on these things. We are being asked to move into our wise leader (exalted Aries) with a focus on putting ourselves first - moving away from people pleasing and codependency and into the divine I can I am. There is sovereignty to be gained here if the risks are calculated, understood and taken with grounded faith and surrender to your connection with the unseen. There's a LOT going on here - simply with the eclipses. Aries season and spring ask us to take action. Do. Based on our evaluation of the past year. It's a mix of cerebral functionality - a little pro and con list here is constructive for Aries….and soul fire audacity. This cycle wants us to jump forward. The nodes of fate are mathematical points in the sky that shift clockwise through the zodiac wheel every 18 months. They denote where the eclipses will take place - as well as what themes/healings are being asked of us as a collective for that period of time. We are asked to LEAVE the non benevolent aspects of whatever sign sits in the south node and to grow into the fully balanced aspects of the current north node (also known as the true node). This will have an even bigger effect on the lives of those with natal placements in the particular nodes. Currently the north and south nodes are in Aries and Libra. They shifted into Aries and Libra July 17th 2023 and will remain there till January 2025. We are all being asked to move out of people pleasing and codependency, non-decision-making flakiness of imbalance Libra and to move into our self reliant, confident, bet on ourselves manifesting capacity of the benevolent leader of Aries energy. If you have your sun, rising, moon in Aries or Libra - it could be a very bumpy and uncomfortable period of time through January 2025. More so for Aries placements - I said what I said and I've been saying it trying to give ya'll the heads up so you're not suffering the entire time but getting curious, pivoting, experimenting and above all choosing new actions and paths. Knowing the energy isn't the excuse we needed for everything to whirl and twirl in chaos…it's the opportunity to prep and play along and also to say not today Universe, not on my watch….I saw that and I redirect this way….and the Universe rejoices in our participation and says Yes, goddess. Yes. You came to play. A reminder or a knowing for the first time - eclipse season is erratic. They're like buckets of magic dumped on us. It's not recommended to cast spells or set intentions in these cycles. Have I? Yes. But I don't recommend it because it is big and wild. AND there's no right way to be a witch. If you feel that you can channel, wield and ground this energy…that you've put your time in in your practices and at your altar…you go. Eclipses have us uttering ‘I did not see that coming'. It could be a gift or a reward or an opportunity that brings joy and pleasure…it could also be a tower mess that Kali has been waiting to make so you'll wake up to your power. Eclipses offer us the opportunity to purge deep emotional set points that it's well past time to give up. They no longer serve us. ANd in Aries and Libra it massively asks for maturity. Wisdom and understanding true partnership versus childish codependency - martyrdom - imbalance caregiving - and a massive understanding of our self worth and what empowered confidence really looks like in this lifetime. A reminder in this energy cycle to be clear about what you want and desire. WANT and DESIRE are the big deal for 2024. Enough of taking scraps…and yes…when we say whatever the universe wants for me or sends my way' is scraps. It's a cop out. It takes away the responsibility of aiming at something. YES, saying you want something is a risk. You may not get it. That's real. But - when you do - you're being honest with yourself and the Universe. Truth is always better than hiding. And the Universe responds and resonates with truth. If you can finally get honest about what you want and desire……and start navigating in soul honesty…and communicate in that truth…well..that's quite a miracle right there. That's some miracle frequency magic right there. This cycle is our step into this magic. Quit pretending you don't have wishes, wants and desires. STEP INTO PLEASURE What would please you this year? Aphrodite is here Lilith is here. Blood and sex magic are here. Time to resurrect. Time to rebirth. Time to bring back the ways of the goddess. Time to play our way into our power. The astrology will always unravel and reveal itself more in my weekly moonday newsletter (if you don't receive it already hop on the list at the link in the show notes). The channeled messaging here always has mysteries to reveal as we go. We are finally in 2024. Time to play. Time to grow. Time to manifest. Aries is ruled by Mars …therefore this season is also ruled by Mars. Mars gets a bad rap…but let's talk about it. Mars is the god of war - and therefore is often demonized and diminished to all violence, all the time. Yes, this is part of Mars' full frequency. Although I don't prescribe to violence, there are times we must protect ourselves, protect that which cannot protect itself and state clear boundaries out of health, care, and love. What mars whats us to lean into, in this community more and more, is their energetics of body. Moving through and to something. Mars represents the body, the vessel. As the vehicle to and through our wants, wishes, desires. It rules our sexual desires. It governs our personal energy (the Sun rules creative energy), it rules the ego and our blood….we're talking vital life force here. That's much deeper than the fire and brimstone Mars we tend to know as a culture. Mars is primal. Passion. Desire…and yes aggression. It wants us in self discipline of our self care in order to have a vessel/vehicle (the body) that can DO THINGS in the world. If you want to get to someone or something you're going to need a reliable way to get there - so Mars always calls us to physical practices that allow us to thrive and continue on. Mars can also be constructive rage that when channeled, has us getting up and saying never again, not on my watch….and then taking direct action to put that sentiment in place. And if you know you know…this puts Mars in alignment with Lilith. So for Aries season themes will always shift towards desire, sex, pleasure, want, and moving forward to these things. Mars is not all bad. Nothing is. Embrace the balanced spectrum of Mars and you have empowered self confidence and trust in what your body communicates with you and what you can accomplish with and through your vessel. Now - let's shift back into Aries season basics - the first sign of the zodiac chart. The Spring Equinox coincides with the sun entering Aries - the first sign of the zodiac chart. Aries is the warrior, athlete and child of the chart. It begins everything -hence why it's the astrological new year. It's a cardinal fire sign and represented by the Emperor card in the Tarot ←which I'll talk more about in episode 60. Its mantra is I AM. Aries is GREAT at starting things. It is OFF AND RUNNING. It carries incredible manifestation energy because of its ‘young' ‘new' and often ‘naive' energy. It's prone to beginner's luck. Aries is wired for battles and is the warrior you want on your side, because odds are…..it'll win..this energy is relentless and fresh….and sassy salty It thrives on feedback pressure - it needs to hit, push, shove things….simply to feel the resistance. In Balance Aries fights to protect that which it loves, or cannot protect itself. It evolves into the benevolent leader (the balanced exaltation of The Emperor in the tarot) and truly aims to provide for the highest and greatest good. It's got passion, drive, and enthusiasm for days - and can often get people to follow because of this fire. In imbalance Aries can get super egocentric and truly only put itself first. Arguing to win EVERYTHING, even things it seriously doesn't care about. It can get wildly egocentric, immature, and will stir shit up just because it can. Again, Aries needs feedback…pressure…hence why workouts are the perfect outlet to channel this energy into constructive goals. Rather than punching walls or…good goddess other people. It's represented by the ram for a reason. Stubborn. For days…and can get sucked into adrenaline/dopamine hit responses real quick…Aries can trip into addictive behaviors faster than you can say gaming…..also - Aries lesson in this lifetime is PATIENCE…so when in doubt…cultivate patience, Slow down. Don't give up. Rest don't quit. Aries rules the head…remember the stubborn ram with those fabulous horns? Energetically when we talk about Aries in relation to self care, wellness, we're going to be working with connecting with the head as well as energetically getting out of the head. Aries runs hot, fast, and furious and needs to move to burn off the heat…but not cardio. That will overheat the system. Aries is a bit of a jack russell terrier energy. SUPER smart, tiny and mighty, but they will tear shit up if you don't keep them engaged or stimulated enough to generate interest. Think neuro festive brains as well. Needing stimulation to find a constructive zone of focus. Aries needs movement and cerebral dexterity. Being the mother to a double Aries, I know the blessings and challenges of this energy so well. Aries needs to move. But not just any movement will balance its energy—too much drive and heat will blow it out and only generate more anger, frustration and injuries ….did I mention aries is prone to injuries? When they get stuck in their head or push too hard…..there will be an injury. Remember Aries is ‘young and child-like?' this energy needs to play. It also needs to balance the heat with flow - short bursts of movement rather than long drawn out things. They must learn flow and movement that cool…generating steam to go the long haul - to win the war not just the battle. Hydration needs major attention in this season. For everyone but especially Aries natives. Half of your body weight in ounces of water a day…and slip in a teaspoon of pink salt daily so you have the proper electrolytes for you body to actually absorb the water. Cooling foods is a must as well, anything green and mint, mint mint! As I mentioned before - Aries rules the Head - eyes, and adrenals. In this cycle, in their movement patterns, Unicorn Wellness Studio members will see headstand preps and headstands - to connect to that 7th chakra and pull in divine messaging, but getting a fresh perspective to not get ‘stuck in their head' with these messages. Members will also see our crab series; crab walks, table top, crab rolls (nope, not sushi…pilates), and rabbit pose to keep things playful, grounded from head to toe, cooling, and circulating through the vessel. If you're having headache/migraine issues - head to my Healing Protocols signature series - and utilize the Shoulder Stability protocol to help relieve tension and support postural elements that prevent tension that feed into these headaches. Double down on hydration - headaches from too much caffeine and not enough hydration is a thing. Spiritually Also, stop and ask yourself, what am I thinking but not saying? Headaches can herrold a lack of authentic expression. And finally get curious about What messaging is trying to get through to me and I'm subconsciously blocking, or pretending I don't know what the message is? In Aries season: Begin or prioritize a movement pattern - workout - what you start now has the support of the cosmos to go the long haul for the year - it's truly time to get on the mat with me. If adding some strength training to your life is resonating…this is a great time to do so. PRIORITIZE hydration Meditate Set a bedtime. Aries in general runs hot and needs sleep cycles to cool down. 7 - 10 hours of sleep a night. Put time limits or timers on your gaming and social media. These brew ‘heat' energetically. Make time to play - outside - fresh air and grounding matter Share your thoughts and feelings with a trusted human Whatever you've been considering, plotting, planning, evaluating, and re-evaluating - it's time to take action. Up your greens - green juice, a handful of fresh greens at every meal, and all the mint, some sprigs in your smoothie, peppermint tea. Make cooling a part of your practice. Lighten the scents in your like peppermint eo, lemon and wild orange incense Doing the above supports endurance through this season and through this year. Only one way to not experience burnout… and that's to be in care, consideration and response to your vessel, emotions, energetics in all seasons, but how we start is so important to how we finish. Start fresh, with intention. No one is asking or aiming for perfection around here. We do the best we can with what we have. We can all hydrate mindfully, we can all take 5 minutes to close our eyes and breathe, to take the step out o f the convo to cool down, and to prioritize sleep. This is a time of balancing our constructive creative inner child that remembers that anything is possible with our wise inner adult that says yes - with constructive self discipline of fuel, rest, hydration, and work/effort. We all have Aries in our charts somewhere. we're all working with this energy in this season, in similar yet different ways. For those who are Aries natives - sun rising or moon in your natal chart - welcome home, embrace that you have been returned to your full resources. For those who are super sensitive to fire energy - it may feel like everything sped up and is moving way too fast. Remember you can always take a time out, to slow down, to take the pause and cool off, hydrate, and check in with the body to see what you think and feel. Get curious for your own healing, why speed, confidence, bravery, or impulse might be triggering you. Fire is the element of creativity, magic, manifestation, alchemy, and willpower. I will it so. Magic is in essence our will power- we cast spells in co-creatorship with the unseen forces to bend our 3D experience to our will. Fire is all of that. Nutshell. It's the capacity to create - life by design - experiences by design - our design - hopefully in harmony with the greater energetics at play. Hence why we say ‘ these things or something better for the highest and greatest good of all involved' because as humans we don't know everything and tho we are tasked with wanting - we are equally tasked with releasing our attachment to the desire once a spell has been cast. Fire is a transition. It takes raw food and makes a meal. It takes a solid and turns it into liquid. It takes us from one identity to another. It wants new. It wants creation. It wants you making something else out of what you have. Spring & Aries Season 2024 Tarot Forecast This episode is our full five card tarot forecast for March 19th - April 18th 2024, as well as March 19th - April 18th 2024. 1 card for the theme of this season. 1 card for what to release. 1 card for what to learn. 1 card for the BIG steps for your highest and greatest good this season. 1 card for the NEXT step for your highest and greatest good this season. This is a multi-layered episode of both a micro AND macro cycle. This episode may have more weight or significance if you are an Aries native with your sun, rising or moon in this sign, or have major placements or a stellium in Aries in your natal chart. Aries in the Tarot, in the Major Arcana is represented by The Emperor - this is another often demonized card that gets stuck in toxic masculinity narratives of control, willpower by forces, or power hungry motivation. In truth The Emperor is all about strategy and long term goals. It has a genuine connection to entrepreneurs, to father energy, and yes, to colonization and empire. In balance this card brings us balance and secure foundations through conventional values of community, family, what we cultivate and contribute to these structures. It is constructive boundaries, practical matters, food, water shelter….loyalty and fairness. It reminds us we have free will and to exercise our own power to constructively get to what we want, wish and desire. The Emperor is the master builder. Who creates based on soul destiny and personal soul/moral compass. This card represents empowerment through independence and authentic expression. In exaltation it is manifestation based on proficiency of one's personal power/will power through integrity. The emperor is the external embodiment of inner potential. The emperor in exaltation is the benevolent leader that makes decisions based on the greater good of all. Says we can provide for all and is fair and right to do so..it's all in how we allocate our resources. It's in awareness of resources and how to maximize, allocate, and utilize them for the long game. In Imbalance it is all the toxic masculinity, force, ego, violence that takes and wants at all costs, particularly at the cost of others. Cruelty, domination, control, and violence are present here. WIth zero to little concern for long term outcome. It is unchecked desire. It is immature and undereducated - functions from fear and lack of confidence….it is truly the expression of anger being really loud sadness….lack of empathy, lack of love, lack of compassion, and a lack of emotional intelligence. There is a massive disconnect from emotions here. No tools for constructive processing or healing. This card will always call up: What are your long term goals? Are you planning and acting in accordance with the long term? Are you in active emotional processing and growth? How is your relationship to power? Do you exercise constructive empowerment? Do you make decisions? Do you shy away from decisions in order to make others the villain and keep you the victim? Do you make decisions to allow yourself the power you do have in every situation, even if you don't love the choices, to shine and grow your integrity and path? We have so much goodness to gain from this highly misunderstood card. Aries is cardinal fire energy - In the suites of the Tarot - fire is wands. Wands represent willpower, creativity, and inspiration. It's unpredictable, hot, and wild. And in imbalance it's an illusion, a nonconstructive ego that only says me first, it can be impulsive, and seriously lack direction or purpose, and can have us feeling meaningless. Fire is primal. It's also the element of magic. Transformation. Change. Alchemy. Fire is considered the seed through which all life springs. It's creative life force and ultimate potential. Colin Burns had only 4.5 years of experience in hospitality when he applied for the club manager's position at Winged Foot, one of the most storied private golf clubs in the nation, if not the world. And, after an eight-month search process, he was selected as the club's next general manager – all 31 years ago when Colin had just crossed the line into his thirties. He recalls the president of the club asking him if Colin weren't a tad young for the job. Colin replied: It's not a permanent condition. As we watch a generation of these long-serving club managers move into retirement or consulting – in addition to Colin, we lost Brian Kroh just this month at John's Island Club in Vero Beach, Florida – we are left with a legacy from which we can all learn. Colin's experience is second to none. He managed the US Open during the height of Covid. Five full years of planning all going down the drain as he had to work with the Governor of New York and plan the tournament without spectators as Bryson DeChambeau put his indelible mark on the sport. Now as he joins executive search firm GGA, Colin discusses how every club has a different environment and that search committees, managers and search firms should understand the club's culture first before trying to match a candidate to the club. Do Things with People, Not to Them If you really desire a quality organization you should do things with people, not to them. Burns has put this as his central motif throughout his career. And, with that teamwork sentiment, Colin points out that the hierarchy of a private members club staff doesn't always equate to salary levels. The director of golf, tennis, squash, or even agronomy, may indeed be the highest paid member of staff at many clubs. And what's even more meaningful to club staff members than base compensation? Housing is top of Colin's list and finds it the top of his staff members' list as well. Retiring To a Zenith at Apogee And finally, Apogee means zenith or the highest point of development – and Colin's new project is certainly a zenith of physical land development and a highlight of a continuing, outstanding career. Originally named COO for an incredible project based in Hobe Sound, Florida, now senior advisor, Colin is truly excited about Apogee. It's a three-course extravaganza – or as he calls it “Streamsong on Steroids.” Designers Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner, Mike Davis and Tom Fazio and Kyle Phillips have teamed up with financial backing from Dolphins owner Steve Ross. Colin takes us through the plans and the vastness of this incredible project, and how this team is betting on South Florida moving up to Martin County in the very near future beyond Jupiter and toward sleepy Stuart.
Hanging out at the DMV, a ukulele standard about Catalina, and the good feeling music of the Big Chill generation. Dent May “Known for shepherding a kind of classic American songwriting into the age of bedroom recording, Mississippi born musician Dent May is soaking it in and taking his time on his new LP Late Checkout. After contributing heavily to his local Oxford music and art community, May began putting songs online and performing alone under his birth name in 2007. After befriending Animal Collective while they were recording Merriweather Post Pavilion in Oxford, the band offered to release May's debut The Good Feeling Music Of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele (2009) through their record label Paw Tracks. May's distinctive croon and sentimental writing won over fans around the globe, and his music continued to evolve on Do Things (2012) and Warm Blanket (2013). Pining for a new scene and life in a big city, May moved to Los Angeles in 2015 and began work on his sprawling epic Across the Multiverse (2017). His first record on Carpark, Across the Multiverse saw May taking his songwriting to the far reaches of home recording with expansive arrangements and illustrative lyrics. Following the release of Across the Multiverse, May set out for a new final frontier—his own recording studio. May partnered with friends and collaborators Pat Jones and Michael Rosen to construct Honeymoon Suite Recording Studio from scratch, and began recording himself and other artists there in January 2018. May afforded himself the time to gradually craft a new hi-fi pop alchemy on the songs for Late Checkout, while still aiming for a sparse intimacy in his arrangements. Across the dozen new tracks that make up his fifth LP, May grapples with the swinging emotions of our contemporary reality with his rare optimism and distinguished sound. "Teaching is useless unless people are learning. Training needs to be sticky and impactful for it to truly make a difference." - Lee Cockerell There was a time in my life when I was practically living in hotels and restaurants. A lot of my time was spent observing the activity around me. I quickly recognized the significance of training effectiveness. One thing that has stuck with me was the realization that the implementation of a training is critical but often overlooked. We can conduct countless training sessions, but if they don't translate into action, what's the point? My perspective on training started to shift when I began to notice how some team members naturally excelled at their roles right after training, while others struggled, often slipping back into old habits. This observation led me to the importance of testing the training - not just immediately after, but as a consistent practice. It reminded me of learning to drive. The instructor can teach you all the rules, but unless you practice and are observed on the road, you won't truly grasp it. The same applies to any profession. The effectiveness of training lies not just in teaching, but ensuring learning has taken place. There's an adage that says teaching is useless unless learning takes place. This couldn't be more accurate in a professional environment. The effectiveness of any training program lies not just in delivering knowledge but in ensuring that knowledge translates into improved performance. This is a great episode to listen to if you're feeling like your training programs are not producing the desired results. Many leaders and trainers are struggling to ensure effective training and skill retention among their employees. Despite implementing various actions such as lectures, presentations, and reading materials, they are often met with limited engagement, low information retention, and poor application of skills in real-world scenarios. Take a listen to our conversation on impactful training execution and fostering an environment dedicated to continuous learning. One business that does a great job of helping their employees implement their training is Magical Vacation Planners. They are well trained and ready to plan your next vacation. Modern environments are awash with pollutants. The book Citizens of Worlds is the first thorough study of the increasingly widespread use of digital technologies to monitor and respond to air pollution. Drawing on data from the Citizen Sense research group, which worked with communities in the US and the UK to develop digital-sensor toolkits, author Jennifer Gabrys argues that citizen sensing promises positive change—and also collides with entrenched power structures. What are worlds? Who can do environmental monitoring? How might different means of computation tell a more complete story about pollution and its effects? In this episode, Jennifer talks with Helen Pritchard about Citizen Sense's collaborative research in northeastern Pennsylvania and southeast and central London.Jennifer Gabrys is chair in Media, Culture, and Environment in the Department of Sociology at the University of Cambridge. She leads the Planetary Praxis group, and Citizen Sense and AirKit projects. Her books include Citizens of Worlds: Open-Air Toolkits for Environmental Struggle; How to Do Things with Sensors; and Program Earth: Environmental Sensing Technology and the Making of a Computational Planet. In this episode, we talk through Derrida's "Signature Event Context," which is primarily a reading and extension of J.L. Austin's How to Do Things with Words. Our conversation covers, among other things, Derrida's notion of iterability, Austin's concepts of performativity and illocutionary force, the Searle vs. Derrida exchange, and the desire for truth and certainty in philosophy.

Full Hour | In today's second hour, Dom welcomes Dr. Elana Fishbein, Founder and President of No Left Turn in Education, back onto the Dom Giordano Program to discuss a situation she's uncovered during a October 25th West Chester, PA school board meeting, in which Superintendent Dr. Bob Sokolowski admitted that, while he was serving as a Principal, helped hide a student's gender transition from parents. This comes after months of pushback by liberals about conservatives creating boogeymen in schools that this kind of stuff is not happening. Fishbein explains the situation in schools, and why she and other mothers with school-aged children have bonded together to form No Left Turn, to push back against overbearing school boards creating solutions for problems that don't exist. Then, Dom offers a review of Bill Maher's HBO show this week, in which the liberal host came to the defense of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the alleged ‘Don't Say Gay' bill, which he frames as a ‘Do Things the Same Way We Were Doing Them 5 Years Ago' bill. Giordano tells that this is exactly correct, and relates it back to what happened last week, and the lack of Pennsylvania Republicans to win in the face of this ridiculous political climate. Then, Dom entered into a debate asking whether Donald Trump should announce his run for President tomorrow, and whether Ron DeSantis, as suggested by Lara Trump, should wait until 2028 to start ramping up a national political run. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Covid 11/10/22: Into the Background, published by Zvi on November 10, 2022 on LessWrong. There was a lot of news this week. Elon Musk continued to Do Things at Twitter. America had midterm elections. The polls were roughly accurate, with ‘candidate quality' mattering more than expected especially on the Republican side. FTX imploded. For now I am letting Matt Levine handle coverage of what happened. None of it had anything directly to do with Covid. So this will be short. Executive Summary I hear there were midterms. And that FTX imploded. Covid death number down a lot, presumably not a real effect. Let's run the numbers. The Numbers Predictions Predictions from Last Week: 255k cases (+7%) and 2,600 deaths (-1%) Results: 242k cases (+1%) and 1,993 deaths (-24%!). Predictions for Next Week: 250k cases (+4%) and 2,400 deaths (+20%). That death number is super weird. At first I thought ‘what, they can count votes or they can count deaths but not both at the same time?' or ‘election day isn't actually a holiday is it?' Then the case number came in flat even in the South, although Alabama didn't report any cases at all (which wasn't a big enough effect for me to adjust). Some of the drop is that last week had a spike of about 250 deaths in North Carolina. Still leaves the majority of the gap unexplained. I don't know. I don't see how there could have been a large real drop in deaths, and if it was a reporting issue we would have seen a decline in cases. Also, in the regions where we see a decline in deaths, West and South, we don't see relatively few cases. So the reporting explanations don't make that much sense here, and it seems unlikely cases actually rose a lot while being underreported or anything like that. It does raise uncertainty in deaths a lot for next week, and to some extent also for cases, in the usual ‘was this real or was it both fake and in need of reversal' dilemma. We shall see. The good news is that there is not much practical impact on decision making, unless this is all hiding a tidal wave of new infections. That is possible. I would still not expect anything like last year's wave, and for things not go on too long before stabilizing, but the timing between weather and sub-variants would make some sense. Deaths Cases Booster Boosting and Variants Nothing. Physical World Modeling Babies born during lockdown more often miss developmental milestones (study). I doubt this leads to that much in the way of permanent impacts. It still seems rather not good, the effect sizes here are quite large. Study finds that Paxlovid reduces risk of Long Covid. Would be weird if it didn't. China Via MR, Nucleic Acid Testing ‘now accounts for 1.3% of China's GDP.' Zero Covid is a rather large drag on China's economy that will be cumulative over time. From the comments, which also interestingly feature massive negative votes everywhere: I'm a teacher in China and EVERYONE gets tested at least THREE times per week. The surfaces obsession is something different. Everyone has to know at this point that it doesn't do anything. China reiterates Covid Zero Policy (Bloomberg), calls for more targeted and also ‘more decisive' measures. No signs they will abandon surface paranoia. Tom Holtgraves studies how language helps us do things. We use words to inquire, to instruct, to command, and to persuade. Words are social. He's currently a Professor of Psychological Science at Ball State University (just down the hall from me!), and his lab studies how people use language and other symbols (e.g., emoji) to successfully or unsuccessfully communicate with one another. He edited the Oxford Handbook of Language and Social Psychology and authored Language as Social Action: Social Psychology and Language Use. In our conversation, Tom introduces me to Speech Act Theory and what his own work tells us about how we can get our intentions across through language. Some things that come up in this episode:J. L. This is one of the treatments that are offered at the Poppy Clinic, you can receive it as a stand-alone treatment or as part of your holistic health care. IV stands for Intravenous. It is a 40-minute session during which you are administered a customized blend of vitamins intravenously, right into your bloodstream. The advantage of getting your vitamins this way is that the digestive tract is bypassed in order for you to absorb 100% of what you are getting, you are receiving the vitamins directly, and are able to get much higher doses of the vitamins than you would ever be able to get otherwise. Did you know that 1 of 3 people have a digestive compromise? This means that even if you are eating a great diet or taking all of your vitamins, you might not actually be digesting and absorbing everything. IV Vitamin Therapy is the treatment that helps you absorb 100% of vitamins into your system. Benefits of IV Vitamin Therapy: - Boost your immune system - Heal from chronic disease - Fight off infections - Boost your mood - Improve sleep quality - Calm your nervous system - Health optimization - Prevention of disease - Anti-aging and collagen production boost Reach out to the Poppy Clinic! At the April 2022 Simple Scaling Mastermind event one of my clients said that she was ready to start playing BIG. This inspired me to restructure my mastermind - to create space for 90 Day leaps in your business to get you playing in the big leagues. If you think you're playing small or that there's a hierarchy where you are “lower than other people ''... you need to scratch this mentality. Playing BIG is not having a hierarchy, but rather seeing yourself as a peer. Coaching that is useful is coaching that makes you feel good, inspires you and motivates you. It is coaching that pushes you to DO THINGS, regardless if the thing is scary. Is coaching really serving you if it only shuts you down or makes you feel bad?If you know you've been playing small or you've avoided the thoughts or ideas that make you feel exhilarated, I challenge you in this episode to get out of the box and take the next steps. On today's episode of the Online Business Building Mamas podcast, I'm talking about what it actually looks like to play big or small, and how to nurture that in yourself. You'll learn:Why useful coaching would never shut you down but rather motivate you to take action. How tough coaching is okay as long as it empowers you. Why coaching is all about your personal experience and how you feel in your business. How rules are only opinions and how we shouldn't latch on to rules or use coaching as an excuse to play small. Alice Dailey's How to Do Things with Dead People: History, Technology, and Temporality from Shakespeare to Warhol (Cornell University Press, 2022) is an exploration of Shakespeare's chronicle plays through the theoretical rubric of modern technology. Dailey is Professor of English at Villanova University and is the author of the monograph The English Martyr from Reformation to Revolution (from Notre Dame Press). How to Do Things with Dead People is a study of the representational strategies of the porous boundary between past and present, and dead and undead, in Shakespeare's history plays. Drawing on Roland Barthes, Susan Sontag, Lee Edelman, Peggy Phelan, and Derrida, Dailey creates new space for how we might think about the unruly interrelationships of the present, the past, and the future, including how twentieth-century technology can reanimate our engagement with early modern theories of kingship, ableism, and reproductive futurity. John Yargo recently received his PhD in English literature from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, specializing in the environmental humanities and early modern culture. In this conversation with visual artist Deborah Howard and writer Susan Blood, we discuss wiping the canvas clean and starting over, the impermanence of art, the path of least resistance, and adapting your practice. Susan's writing has appeared in the Petigru Review, Christian Science Monitor, the London-based BachTrack, Provincetown Arts, and the Provincetown Banner. Her first book “How Not to Do Things” was published in 2017. She has credited her 2018 Arts Foundation of Cape Fellowship for inspiring her to write a second novel, “Hermit”, which she recently completed. Having grown up on Cape Cod, Deborah has always been inspired by the region's ever-changing landscape. Drawn to the unpredictability of this environment, she attempts to convey its dynamic and ethereal nature in her work. Her paintings are about capturing moments she experiences and communicating the feeling of a certain time and place to the viewer. Can shame be positive? Some philosophers see it as an emotion that can improve social relationships, and cultivate a better self. Philosophers Owen Flanagan gives context based on his book, How to Do Things with Emotions, and Bongrae Seok explains the shame in the longstanding Confucian tradition.
How to Do Things with Emotions: The Morality of Anger and Shame across Cultures (Princeton UP, 2021) is an expansive look at how culture shapes our emotions—and how we can benefit, as individuals and a society, from less anger and more shame The world today is full of anger. Everywhere we look, we see values clashing and tempers rising, in ways that seem frenzied, aimless, and cruel. At the same time, we witness political leaders and others who lack any sense of shame, even as they display carelessness with the truth and the common good. In How to Do Things with Emotions, Owen Flanagan explains that emotions are things we do, and he reminds us that those like anger and shame involve cultural norms and scripts. The ways we do these emotions offer no guarantee of emotionally or ethically balanced lives—but still we can control and change how such emotions are done. Flanagan makes a passionate case for tuning down anger and tuning up shame, and he observes how cultures around the world can show us how to perform these emotions better. Through comparative insights from anthropology, psychology, and cross-cultural philosophy, Flanagan reveals an incredible range in the expression of anger and shame across societies. He establishes that certain types of anger—such as those that lead to revenge or passing hurt on to others—are more destructive than we imagine. Certain forms of shame, on the other hand, can protect positive values, including courage, kindness, and honesty. Flanagan proposes that we should embrace shame as a uniquely socializing emotion, one that can promote moral progress where undisciplined anger cannot. How to Do Things with Emotions celebrates the plasticity of our emotional responses—and our freedom to recalibrate them in the pursuit of more fulfilling lives. Learn more about your ad choices. As masks and mandates fade, Americans are itchy to DO THINGS.
On episode 238 of THE NARCISSISTS' CODE I talk about how there is NO SUCH THING AS SELFLESS ACTS FROM A TOXIC PERSON. NARCISSIST ALWAYS EXPECT THINGS IN RETURN. Narcissists always, always, always DO THINGS with the expectation that there will be something in return later on. Even things they do in the beginning they expect things in return for later on. Welcome my channel! If this is your first time seeing my face or hearing my voice, my name is Lee and I am a self aware #narcissist. I have narcissistic personality disorder ( #NPD ) and I've been in therapy for my personality disorder since 2017 and it has definitely changed my life because without it, I would have lost everything. The point of these videos is to help bring awareness from the other side of the narcissistic *buse spectrum. All my videos give perspective on why many narcissists do what they do and the possible different reasons behind them. The victims and survivors get validation and the #Narcissists (those that are willing) get to see that you can get help and that you are not alone. 1 on 1's and all my links - https://beacons.page/mentalhealness You can find me on - Tiktok MentalHealness - https://www.tiktok.com/@mentalhealness?lang=en Insta- Mentalhealnesss - https://www.instagram.com/mentalhealnesss/?hl=en Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/MentalHealness85 Click the BEACON up top for direct links. Sensing Smart Forests Jennifer Gabrys Chair in Media, Culture and Environment in the Department of Sociology, University of Cambridge Forests are increasingly sensorized environments. Whether in the form of camera traps to monitor organisms or the Internet of Things to detect wildfires, there are an array of sensor technologies that observe and constitute forests in relation to scientific inquiry, Indigenous land claims, environmental governance, and disaster prevention and mitigation. This presentation will investigate the sensory arrangements that Smart Forests generate. It will ask how sensory infrastructures materialize as distributions of power and governance, while considering the sensory practices that transform and potentially re-constitute dominant regimes of perception toward other inhabitations and milieus. זה בדיוק האלמנט שנקרא “To make sense of Data”. To make sense of data?” (רן) Lifetime Value . . Log-Normal?]
Paul Graham Essays: Readalouds and Discussions with Amara Ventures
Written in 2013, Do Things that Don't Scale remains one of the topmost essays ever written by our beloved Paul Graham. It talks of how startup in its initial days must do things that seem impossible to scale but are extremely valuable to be done in the early days. Drawing from examples of Airbnb and Stripe, Paul makes a compelling case for founders to focus on the user and simply do whatever it takes to delight them. The essay reading is done by Minal Desai of Amara Ventures, an angel investment firm in India. To know more about them visit www.amaraventures.co

The world is slowly beginning to open up, and we don't know about you, but Team Chances is itching to get out and DO THINGS. Safely, using masks and hand washing and social distancing, of course, but we're really looking forward to seeing our friends IRL instead of on screens. We love connecting -- whether that's with current friends or new ones, in person or on screens -- but we really love combining friends with activities! That's why we made Activities such a big part of our Chances App: so you can find people who also want to go for a hike, eat sushi, go to the beach, or play online games. It makes hanging out so much easier. Instead of a bunch of people trying to make a decision, YOU pick a day, time, and activity, and invite contacts on Chances. They RSVP, you meet, and you get to the fun part right away. We brought America's Dad back to talk about how to create fun activities and events to enjoy with friends. Keep connections with friends strong, discover new connections, and make some great memories with the Chances App activities!
People with a fixed mindset believe that their personal character, skills, intelligence, and abilities are fixed traits that cannot be changed. They believe you're either born with it or you're not. On the other hand, people with a growth mindset believe that their abilities can be developed through hard work and effort. A fixed mindset keeps us stuck and afraid of failure and mistakes, but people with a growth mindset are constantly improving and growing. They seek out challenges and recognize the power of learning from mistakes. Having a growth mindset can help you be more successful and happy in every area of life. This panel discussion takes off from the work of INFRACTIONS, specifically its use of the moving image to address the colonial infrastructure and cultural dimension of fossil gas expansions. The conversation looks to discuss the relationship between ‘the situation’ of gas-fired futures, matters of cultural responsibility, survival, and refusal. Join Que Kenny, Phillip Marrii Winzer, Vernon Ah Kee, and INFRACTIONS director Rachel O’Reilly to discuss the work of doing things otherwise. Hosted by Warraba Weatherall. Que Kenny (Western Arrarnta) is a community support worker, artist and activist from Ntaria (Hermannsburg), west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, also studying law at Deakin University, Melbourne. She has been involved in grassroots campaigns against the Northern Territory Emergency Response (‘The Intervention’) since 2007, and against Northern Territory gas fracking with the Protect Country Alliance. She has contributed to numerous fictional and environmental films and community projects, and accompanied INFRACTIONS to the Berlin and London launch. Her work has been profiled in Rolling Stone magazine and the Guardian. Phillip Marrii Winzer is a Ngarabul and Wirrayaraay Murri, a member of Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance, and former Organising Manager for Seed Indigenous Youth Climate Network. They are currently involved in activism around deaths in custody and refugee detention. This week I'm talking about "Hackers and Painters" by Paul Graham. "Do Things that Don't Scale" - Paul Graham's essay. "When you only have a small number of users, you can sometimes get away with doing by hand things that you plan to automate later." "Revenge of the Nerds" - Paul Graham essay. That Tim Ferriss & Derek Sivers thing about The Magic of Thinking Big:"And, it’s also one of those books, sorry, but I’m getting defensive. But, it’s one of those books that I read in around 2000, maybe a year or two after college, and I was in a shitty 100-plus hour a week job, where I was sleeping at my desk, and sitting the the fire exit, because that’s the only place they can fit me. But, yeah, it has to catch you at the right time."
I ask the philosopher Nancy Bauer five questions about herself. Nancy Bauer is Professor of Philosophy and Dean of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. She is the author of "Simone de Beauvoir, Philosophy, and Feminism" (2001) and "How to Do Things with Pornography" (2015).
In this episode, we revisit the topic of silence and discuss how silence, though appropriate in some scenarios, is inappropriate in others. We consider the death of George Floyd, the astonishingly high maternal mortality rate for birthgivers of color in the US, and commit to use our voices to rise above silence and create a more peaceful world. Following hot on the heels of our last episode about St. Paul among the Philosophers, in this episode we take up his magnum opus, the Epistle to the Romans. Positioned first in the New Testament, it is actually the last extant letter he wrote. Hugely influential, it is densely packed, tightly argued, and generally impenetrable to a casual reading. So with the excellent aid of the brilliant interpreter Ernst Käsemann we walk through most of Romans (leaving chs. 9–11 for next time) to discover the power of the gospel, the ungodliness of the godly, and God's justification of precisely those ungodly people by His Son and Spirit. *SHOW TIMESTAMPS FEATURED AT THE END*In this episode Gerry welcomes former Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs Athletic Trainer Aaron Borgmann. To start, Aaron walks through his core philosophies as an athletic trainer and rehabilitation professional, based around his mantra, "train the athlete, not the condition." Aaron talks about the importance of accounting for the variables that can arise from one athlete to another and ultimately affect the nature, seriousness and rehab timeline of injuries. From there, Gerry asks Aaron his opinion on unstable surface training and voices his displeasures with the use of it in the realm of strength and conditioning. Aaron and Gerry both agree on the need for stability variations in physical therapy and rehabbing injuries that diminish proprioception. However, there are much simpler and effective variations that would work instead of using complicated variations to look novel or "cool."To finish the conversation, the two address the importance of the meaning of injury "prevention," and "reduction." Meaning, there is no such thing as preventing injuries as that would imply we could predict them, but rather our goal should be focused on injury REDUCTION.All that and more on this episode of Muscles and Management!Show Timestamps:9:36 - Not Seeing Eye to Eye with Coaches15:15 - Being Professional and Dealing with Other People in the System17:00 - How to Explain Things to Coaches/Athletes20:07 - People Are Afraid to Be Wrong23:40 - Aaron’s Mindset with Rehab27:30 - Stop Blanketing All Athletes Together33:50 - Teaching Athletes to Know How to Do Things on Their Own38:35 - Unstable Surface Training46:39 - Alternatives to Dangerous Social Media Exercises48:30 - Programming Pyramid54:15 - One Sport Athletes56:57 - Prevention Vs Reduction1:02:50 - ACL Programs Are Great, but They Aren’t Prevention Programs1:04:20 - Quad-dominant Athletes & The Science of Stopping1:12:45 - Aaron’s Final Thoughts (Do the Basics Right)Support the show (http://www.challengerstrength.com)

Let’s talk about books! How, when, and what do you like to read? Have you ever thought about the history of books and reading? How about shape, size, or texture of your book? Where do books go after they’ve been digitized? Harvard University professor Leah Price asks these questions and more in her new book, What We Talk About When We Talk About Books: The History and Future of Reading(Basic Books, 2019). Price begins her book by debunking the assumption that ebooks are more popular than print books, pointing out that in 2018 “sales revenue from hardbacks and paperbacks outstripped revenue from ebooks by more than $300 million.” She goes on to explore the history of books and reading from the changing social perceptions of reading, to reading on the move, to reading as method of political activism. Filled with cleverness and humor, Price surprises readers with interesting facts and anecdotes about books. As for the future of books and reading only time will tell, but Price believes that “the experience of immersion in a world made of words will survive if and only if readers continue to carve out places and times to have words with one another.” Leah Price is a Francis Lee Higginson Professor of English Literature at Harvard University, where she teaches courses on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literature, gender, fiction, and the history of books. Her books include How to Do Things with Books in Victorian Britain and The Anthology and the Rise of the Novel. She writes for the New York Times Book Review, London Review of Books, Times Literary Supplement, San Francisco Chronicle, Boston Globe and Public Books, where she is also a section editor. She is curious about what, where, when, and how we read. But most of all, she wants to know why. Colin Mustful is the author of four historical novels about Minnesota’s settlement and Native history. He holds an MA in history and an MFA in creative writing. He is the founder and editor of a small independent press called History Through Fiction. Chris Husong is a market expert in the hemp industry. Accounting for the challenges of public perception, legal challenges, and the burdens of science to prove the claims for hemp benefits have all shaped the climate in which hemp is used today. Born in Texas, Chris moved with his parents a few times throughout the country, studied theology in California, worked in finance and telecom, and after confronting his own biases, discovered that the hemp industry needed legitimatization. Teaching the skeptics, directing messaging for correct use, and ultimately using education as the chosen tool for sales, Chris shared with GCP why the truth behind hemp is the only way to properly build its acceptance.https://elixinol.comFacebook: @Elixinol https://www.facebook.com/elixinol/LinkedIn: @Elixinol https://www.linkedin.com/company/elixinol/Twitter: @ElixinolCBD parts store's loss was last minimum three exclusions apply conference 10 3119 well it's a gut check project this is episode number eight project we check our egos at the door and they get your health in check I'm here with your host Dr. Kenneth Brown I'm Eric Rieger Doug Brown I doing today I'm doing fantastic episode number eight holy cow I feel like we have the words flying through these episodes every time we come always a better guess today is no exception at all this is gonna be really exciting now is to be very exciting is your mind when you said episode number eight remember that show it is enough I don't want that to be the theme as well as Rabbi and it won't be today she was incredibly excited we have on today Christian song long term market experience within the hemp industry and he has me setting it is getting an incredible tale of coming from a world of high regulation in telecom and in banking and basically what the hemp industry means to America he's got lots of interaction stories and what it takes to make people understand the importance of hemp and how to accept the message of me what did you can you gather out of that amine Christmas we met at first two years ago yeah so my my initial meeting of Christmas two years ago that's we told the story before will repel your facts right and I walked by the lexical booth and another salesperson other than marketing person Christine Thiel grab me and the thing I remember most about that is Dave Christine and Chris all super tall like this is a really tall child apparently hip will make you taller I know you call me someone will be involved with that company so we could do some real basketball or something you know join the election all basketball team what you honestly if you're in listening to get your project today if you've ever wondered about hey look at him is new to me and I'm not really sure what to think that's that's okay today's episode is really kind incredible as Chris can walk through what it's like to to not just look at Hampton say minutes taboo that's taboo it's okay so many people started there and he's got a lot of experience in helping people understand the benefits behind him and what he can do to change their lives for what I love about this is that he comes from these industries are so regulated and she had to transform that into an industry that is so misunderstood you know when you look at that you look at his bio he only looks on website it says it is skilled in helping people and companies overcome their psychological creative and strategic barriers so that they can achieve the professional personal and creative goals so more than just be the chief marketing officer this guys can be my life coach break through all those barriers yet when Ken and Chris Chris's got a lot of a lot of expense he actually went to theological theology school in not in California but were to talk about that for sure yes that means because just think about the transition nearly everything he's gone through in and of course and he's either great guy can't wait from to join the show hit the bottom of the hour course that they were have KPD KB MD's corner where basically Dr. Brown will die do like he's been doing the last seven shows in address some recent research topics and get tiny previews about what to talk about your two minutes yeah so what we always like to do is try to have a bootable format here so everyone knows what to get it into the show so we know we have a fantastic guest I also want to talk about some recent science it's out there so we have forcefully graduate student that helps us out and she sent a really cool article about ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease the same disease that killed Stephen Hawking right I have a very personal tide of this because when my good friends Dr. Russell Veronica in San Antonio a gastroenterologist that I've trained with and with medical school with his father unfortunately passed away of this so I saw this article which to my knowledge the first one that actually looks at ALS and CBD ties in perfectly because we have Christmas song near chief marketing officer now we can't make disease claims what we can say is look it may help some of these different diseases where there really is no treatment and this is a really cool study that I wanted didn't and it's also even said that because today shows can be so incredible and that the way we learn how to balance real information and what we can legally say as a marketing person and then what the consumer can do with both of these angles to kind of piece these puzzles together much like the episode we had last time in stem cell oh yeah you know this fascinating cool stuff you like why don't more people know about this will Chris has to deal with that every day is like no we can say this we can't say this oh my goodness yes is be fantastic if we did this but we have to do it this way because his background I think is a perfect background coming from the super regulated industry to an area that is so gray that you really need somebody very disciplined like him to sort of take the reins and that's why think election all such unique company yet without question let's get some of the paying the bills out of the way and first off the bat love my tummy.com/spoony what could that be in reference to well I believe you're talking about my baby trying to I am trying to so we talk about how our transit was initially developed for bloating and digestive issues change in bowel habits abdominal discomfort what I am seeing a whole lot of which is really cool really getting into this practice of just coming up in the next few weeks that are professional triathletes we have different bodybuilders and things like that that we have slated to come in one of the things we do realize is that the polyphenols in trying to actually increase blood flow to the muscles so that you can have better performance in just about everything so the polyphenols go to your: where your own colonic archer will break them down into anti-inflammatory and basically antioxidant species so that you can recover from workouts and you can actually increase blood flow so not only is it good for bloating but I encourage everyone to go to love my Tommy.com/spoony put in the spooning code SP 00 NY and get 10% off I just answered you did bring up athlete hotrod teal is the only NSF certified for sport product out there indicated for bloating what is it me so if something is NSF certified for sport specifically it means that 1/3 party the NSF foundation has taken the product and they made certain that everything you mark on your package is truthful date they can be backed up that the claims that you have for your studies are verified and that every single product it makes up the composite award the product itself is clean if you're an athlete you don't have to worry that something you and a girl you're going to take with the NSF certified for sport moniker on it might contaminate a sample or might not do exactly what the ad the labeling says so NSF certified for sport is the same thing that Richard dietitians there with MLB NFL NCAA Olympics Olympics they look for that little mark to make certain that when they recommend a supplement or an over-the-counter supplement or aid to their athletes that it's on there so they know that it's a it's a clean product and John Teal features that endorsement that's also because a lot of companies don't have that we pay to play for that eventually I think that what we should have is a KB MD endorsement over here was just means that we like the product to say absolutely right some quick follow-up from from my last week show one of the coolest things as people began to take in Dr. Wade McCann as if he didn't check out episode seven go back and listen last week if you have any questions about stem cells the future stem cells what it's like to market stem cells in this FDA over regulating environment even know you have truth in your hands go back and listen episode seven but once Wade McKenna finished his his episode all week we received email I even got texts stem cells are good for hair growth stem cells can actually help me with my sciatica that I've been dealing with for a few years it's amazing what people don't know about stem cells and then how many people said I thought whenever I used quote unquote cord blood that I was using stem cells and it turns out that you're just not so anyway last week's feedback to getting feedback from last week I got a ton of feedback I actually got a ton of feedback people were I got a lot of calls people wanted to go I think a lot of people actually call me how to actually get into Dr. Wade McKenna's practice of which I think is also because when we have some real like that they can make it make a difference I mean when I sit there and think about this we are completely under utilizing everybody with analysts on the show so far photo bio modulation stem cells once you get into the science you like wow the site speaks for itself much like CBD yes science much like outrun to the science hold its own yeah and that's a cool sinks within a marketing gimmick it's none of this and that's what Chris is going talk about how do you how to stay above how do you stay above the bar where everybody else is trying to play a marketing game and usually want to get out there and help people that's remarkable whenever you look back and you does mention it photo by modulation with James Carroll and talking about stem cells last week with the Dr. McKennitt the parallels that were running here with the CBD industry or hemp industry and what the FDA basically is doing because the FDA is it it it playing all three of those we got truth and results so true and you just can't cannot see it's crazy but anyhow if and you can always go back and check any of our previous episodes you can always go to iTunes and search for gut check project so be sure to subscribe and share with the print so speaking of share with a friend sought a shout out and we need a little help from our audience here only give a shout out to share there as well that we are always here in the Sony studio you can always listen live it spoony.com so smutty.com iTunes get check project YouTube gadget project thank you so much subscribe and share so Dr. Brown let's head into KPMG corner what's on the corner today well let's talk a little bit about some personal stuff start this is kind of interesting I'm a little bit embarrassed about this what you know how when sometimes it's too close to you and you don't know what's going on well my mom unfortunately she fell hurt her shoulder about three months ago and she's been rehabbing Kent and I was just talking to her and I just went oh my gosh did I not send you CBD that are not and she owes no I don't know you know I tried something like that some hemp oil what she tried screws that endure anything else like okay let me send you something so I sent her some bottles with some vitamin D and sufficient oil because I believe in using these fatty acids to really help brain information in such large Dr. couple days ago and she was post be doing three more months of rehab and she goes okay and it's so exciting I don't have to go to rehab anymore my shoulder feels great it actually back to normal this is after you sent everything this is after center about two weeks of using the CBD and so she's Artie on trunk Hill always has been for quite a while but so after sending the CBD and now embarrassed because I'm like oh my gosh my own mom herself and that would be something owed to the patient immediately you just forget when it's too close and then my sister who's actually black belt in aikido and she's always been yourself open to students rose to banged up my mom gave her a bottle and she just texted me this morning said oh my gosh that works so well the key to this Morgan talk about this with Chris that there are differences in different types of CBD and what is out there how you market so my personal story is sorry mama should be given to to three months ago just was too close to it we got so much stuff going on and you know fortunately better late than never she's doing great yeah I know that's a it's of these brothers, interesting so you said in another we can touch on Chris but when James was on James Carroll from outdoor laser he talked about imitators right and then last week with the with Dr. Wade mechanically talked about imitators or people that don't administer stem cells appropriately or may not actually even be utilizing stem cells but saying that they are or putting in chemicals that will destroy destroy those that are not probably not to their own fault I just don't know enough about it because the reality is we talked about this is CBD industry and I'm I tell my patients this I said I would get into a loop of the science would explain a little bit we have this new brochure that explains a little bit and we get into the fact of what your end or cannabinoid system is how it links the nervous system and the immune system put you back in balance that is so simplistic because the reality is were going to see a field of medicine called Endo Kanab analogy and your Genesee specialist called Endo Canavan allergist's share I'm convinced of it sure any of you have a hepatology ST have the endocrinologists there is actually no reason why you would have an Indo Campanella just as we begin to learn more that CBD absolutely totally agree right it's about you anything going on in the personal life personal life at the boys I mean honestly the boys are doing great. During off-season basketball who ended up I know that seems like add the theme but that's that's really what they're into but I did go shoot with my youngest earlier this week and I learned that dad dad is the worst basketball player in the household now Matt can drain from all points of the court I'm just I'm no match anymore there faster than I am and now that he's basically 6 foot tall and 15 and gauges about 61 now in 1730 I just not much I can do with with either one of them so very much dominate brain I headed down to Kaleo FX this week though oh that's right you want one of my favorite conferences to be great conference it's a chemist think that immediate which is so busy just to go this week will unfortunately I have to go to Newark New Jersey and film a national commercial for archer until Roger entails time to take out her until the next level were to be doing some national commercial so I would love it really affects would love to be helping out at the election all booth pate BMD CBD booth trash and talk about trying to learn the on the entourage effect without an CBD but I don't fly up to New York in the true commercial which I'm a little bit nervous about the Wilson estate bowing on the head Keith Michelle Noris tune into your commercial as soon as it airs big shot today and they are the one to put on file with X they do a great job if you never been that appealing effects in Austin Texas it is what's your time you going to be introduced to a bunch of different things that could probably change her health and that's how we found CBD out and say I'm very partial to pill effects last year I give a talk and one over really well talked a lot of people had to be able to get their books it was really exciting you just it just fun to see a like-minded community I did the mojo 50 show this morning we're talking about sugar and the paler community does not really eat M&Ms those guys do M&M tasting Delphi lot M&Ms of failure effect listen if you have M&Ms you to balance it out with much until Fisher 100% totally so yeah you just have a great time hello effects I will make you feel better about you not been know to beat your sons because the only person that can warm Lucas up is my daughter Carla because both my wife and I are incapable of even even hit the ball back against those guys don't know probably know why it's super humiliating I I feel memo Mike is it embarrassing that the youngest person in the family is the only person I can warm Osama before matches and vice versa they want each other up it's really cool that's get down so I'd have any hits on the on the corner before Chris joins us will I do want to bring up one thing here I will bring up an article I was try to bring up one article to talk about just now woman talk about marketing Christmas songs it's about marketing a lot of people look at the big deal I want to tell everyone about this and so on I really like to look at disease specific states And the article that we can achieve that in the beginning here is an article related to the meta-analysis was published in the Journal of neurochemistry here this year just couple months ago and what it looked at is it did a meta-analysis which is a compilation of studies usually meta-analysis I have in the scientific literature are considered to be more robust picture taking a lot of studies putting them together and this is looking at ALS known as anti-atrophic lateral sclerosis Lou Gehrig's disease is a devastating disease and as I had mentioned earlier it actually took the life of my good friend Dr. Russ of Ron Ike whose guesser Alderson San Antonio and we actually saw his dad his father correct we actually saw this progressive disease and that's the deal about ALS eight what it does is if you're unaware of it I find it to be one of the most devastating diseases out there there's a book called Tuesdays with Maury that I read back many years ago they commit a movie about it also censures about the progress the progression of ALS and somebody that where there is a caregiver helping them out and you get a feeling about how it just slowly chips away and what it does this damages the nerves that control muscles so over time all of your muscles weaken to the point where they cannot contract eventually hitting the diaphragm so you can't read you lose the ability to speak because you can't control your tongue you lose the ability fine motor movement changes first because the small muscles go and you can't button things and it is just a debilitating but you keep your mind eventually you have some mind changes and they don't really understand why it is they believe there's a small genetic component but really what it is it's an excitatory issue with the nerves releasing too many of certain chemicals that eventually do not allow the do not allow the muscle to contract on the words and try to sting like muscle doesn't work so this was quite a while ago I've been in practice for 17 years Russ and I with both med school and fellowship together it was during residency so were talking 27 years ago 25 years ago I do know anything about CBD fat I know they must be in touch two years ago so this study came out red actually showed that they looked at mice and they looked at their ability to travel distance they looked at their grip strength that she put them through some sort of little American ninja course where they had them hang upside down on the net so like a Jacob's ladder, it was it was it was really it was fascinating that I made a run a wheel what they did is they they actually looked at those that had that were given CBD and those that were the control group and what they showed across the board in this meta-analysis is that those mice I'm sorry let me preface that the mice were genetically predisposed to have ALS so they all had a lot okay okay and what they did is that they showed that the mice that were on CBD could actually run further the mice could cling long-running that they actually increase the grip strength running real activity and they had improved survival and they did not have weight loss when they looked at all the studies something stood out to me that was very interesting they were all given CBD one particular study that they look that used a Madrigal inhibitor now what Maggio is is that's the enzyme that breaks down to AG one of your Dodgers and of cannabinoids in one of these days were to get into the deep science about the inner cannabinoid system gets all complex that's a drug it's in study and it's called KM L 29 so it's fascinating that the FDA's over here try to regulate right and in the background you've got drug companies try to develop drugs to manipulate the system if they can figure out that's awesome but is really interesting because the macro inhibitor was not as good as the traditional CBD and so what they found is that CD1 and CB to agonists in other words CBD significantly delayed the decline of motor function when compared to the control group and they showed a consistent 12 to 25 days longer of normal motor function in the mouse world what you doing is really improving that so right now there's no treatment for this they've got a couple drugs available one called real you tech and one called red Dick Reddick Have Not Even Sure That That Was around When Ross's Dad Was Sick They Said That It Could Potentially Slow down the Progression by a Month or Two While the Superexpensive Month or Two That's It I Member at the Time When We Went outside and Rushes Flying All over the Country Thing Is That Everywhere There Were Trying Everything They're Looking at Using Creatine and Different Things like That so Here We Have This Deal Where We've Got Eight Now You Can't Just Translate Mouse Models to Humans But It's Really One of the First Step in Trying to Figure Some Stuff out My Deal Is That We Know That CBD Helps in Many Different Ways and I'm Not Saying That This Is a Disease Claim I'm Not Saying That This Is Functioning and Will Help but It Certainly Can't Hurt and Might Help Right so When You Have a Very Specific Disease Group like ALS to Desperate Group with No Significant Treatment I Think It's Fascinating That These Guys Went to the Trouble of Putting Together This Mouse Data to Actually Try and Figure This out so Here We Have Grip Strength Upside down Running All of It Which Means That There Is Some Potential That This Could Actually Help This Very Devastating Disease and Is Very Small Group of People Because It's Rare but When It Does Affect You It Affects Everybody It May Affect One Person so the Number the Thing We'll Talk about Is When We Say Disease Oh This Is the Incidence of This Disease This Is the Prevalence of This Disease As Somebody Who Lost My Dad at a Young Age It Affects More Than Just the Person That Dies Share the Prevalence or the Incidence of the Disease Affects Everyone Around Them Right so I Think That If We Can Help Those People with ALS If You Know Anybody with ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease This Is Something That May Be Showmen We Can Certainly Forward This Article to Anybody That Would like to so Include Any of the Studies That Utilize a Mouse AMI All All of the Drugs They Began and and and Started There to Try to Find out If This Is a Workable Model and Unfortunately with Today's Highly Regulated Environment He Can't Just Keep Going Forward but Were Trying to Help People Connect the Dots This That CBD Is Safe to Take and You Shouldn't Have Any Serious Side Effects Certainly by Consuming CBD It Just so Happens That in This Mouse Model We Saw These Improvements Draw from the Conclusions What You Will But This Is What I've Seen and I Mean I Think That Were Hinting In the in the Correct Direction I Just Think That It's You Know This Is Work Were Offering Hope Church When Scientists like This Do This You Just Offer Little Bit of Hope And It Is a Devastating Disease and We Just Want to See People and Just Offer Them Something an Alternative Right And If They Can Even If They Feel a Bit Better Well We Got 20 Seconds Left Here in Just a Moment We Are Going to Be Joined by Please Think Our Dialects and the Power Power by Licks and All so Chris You We Are Now in Dallas That's Where Our Studio Is Siam in Dallas Here with You Guys Thanks for Having Me I Grew up in Plano Just down the Road Just I Know That That's Also That's Where I Live Right Now Sam Right on Teakwood Okay All Right in the Middle Was Back When There Was Still Some Farmland in That Region Roads That Were Definitely Not Paved Back That Well While You Have Made Your Journey All the Way to Being a Market Expert but It Was You Got Zero Stress Remember I Was Told about Russ and His Dad yet Will He's Just Call Me Right Here Is Try to Call Him to Let Me Describe a Little Bit about about His Experience Home on Such a Crazy Timing to Rent a Van Fantastic What Will Look at That Set up Well in the Meantime While Were Getting the Call Set up Which This Be Our First Time We've Ever Had Live Taller All for You Chris That's Awesome Though Our Weight Much to Say Go Wildcats for Plano West Guy While Nice Nice Sticky Big Absolutely so from Plano You Are You Hello When You Plan to Graduate High School There No so I Was Born in the Fort Stockton Texas Home Right Now Where Judge Judge Roy Bean the Hanging Judge a Hanging Judge Meant to Write Also the Largest Groundhog Population in Texas That at the Time Did I Know That I Seconds Probably Pretty Pretty Have Been Doing down There but No I Moved to All over Texas with My Dad Is an Engineer for General Electric Okay so We Were All over the Place and Then Moved to California Right and I Graduated College out There and Jumped around All Sorts of Places since Then Is Your Degree in Theology Theology Yeah That's Right This Is Great for What I'm Doing Preaching about Hemp and CBD What May Think That I in All Honesty When You Find That There Is Actually Quite a Bit of Similarity and There's Going to Be A Lot of Congruent Messaging Well There There Is A Lot Of Congruent Messaging and and We Can Get Super Deep on It If You'd like but Overall Community, Theology or CVD Will Get the Loan Both of Them Get Real Deep on Both but That Because I Think Are Highly Connected I Think One of Them I Don't Know How Far You Want to Get into This Right Now but CBD Itself I Think It's Is One of the Main Things in the Unit Can Have Annoyed Systems and Allows All That Better Empathy Sure Which Is What Is Causing so Much Disregard and Disconnection in Our Society Right Now Right and If We Can All Take a Significant Amount of Quality CB and Improve Our Ability For Our Brain to Connect with People and and Not Have Social Anxiety And Connect to People Then Were Going to Actually Build Improve Our Culture and and Not Not Have All These Great Divides so I Would Assume That Probably Whenever You Are Studying Theology That That May Not Have Been Your Attitude Towards CBD or Hemp Products or That Was Even on Your Radar Though My Gosh Cannabis in CBD and Hemp Was Bad Sure You Know the Devils We Write Back Then and That It's Definitely Not Something That I Supported I Told My Kids Said No Don't Do Dumb Stuff Listen to Dad and Don't Do Drugs and Cannabis Was Definitely One of Those Things and I Had to Change My Tune Much Later in Life and My Mom Actually Group Cannabis and Marijuana While She Was Raising Us in Texas and Oklahoma and Back What Was Illegal She Was like One of the Original Member That Was – She Is Original OGE That so and You Know I I Being the Rebellious Teenager Decide I'm to Put Our Three-Piece Suit and Go Learn Religion and You Look down from My Port Perch on People and Obviously I Had to Humble Myself and Admit Mom Was Right the Whole Time That Is so Fascinating I Don't Want to Break the Story Whatsoever but I Think We Have Our First Because This Is Going All Dr. Russell Running San Antonio He Is Patched in And Russ Can Hear Us Morning Man This Is Also My Was That Obvious He Heard the Show This Morning Was Talk about You and Your Dad I Appreciate That That Means A Lot It Does so Russ Whenever You Found out That Your Dad Had ALS When When You Look at the Options That Were on the Table What and in You Being Physician What Did You Think of the Landscape and What Did You Think the Options Would Be For Him and Then Now Looking Back to What What Cans Talking about in Terms of CBD and ALS What I Mean I Lost My Dad You've Lost Your Dad Can Lost His Dad and You Know It's It's No Fun for Anyone Any Always Wish That You Had the Experiences of Technology Later What What Do You Wish You Could Take Back to in Time from What We Learn Now She Mentioned That My Dad Started Get Sick with ALS Back When Can Our Medical School Diseases Just Initiated This Really Is and They're Just Just Seated Man Who Was Pillar of Strength and It Just Wait, Wait Enough and Where They Couldn't Hold a Hammer He Could Climb a Ladder and the Most Devastating Part of That for Us Was When He Studied the Single Ball Ballparks in Ankeny and Carry on a Conversation and Eat Well Anymore Back Then There Was Nothing for Writers One of Those Diseases like Pancreatic Cancer You Got It Sorry I Just Not Then We Can Do and Then I Moved down Here to San Antonio Started Launching Residency and Fellowship and Hooked up with Carding Jackson Was a Neurologist down Here Amazing Woman Who Runs a Big ALS Clinic Here in South Texas and I Started Flying My Dad down Twice a Year and She'd See Him in an Even In Her Clinic It Was the Experimental Things of This Kind of False Hope Was Some Anti-Inflammatories There Wasn't Anything That Worked and There Are Days When It Looked like It May Be a Little Stronger and Days When He Wouldn't Now 15 Years Looking Back You Know That He's Been Gone There's Been so Much Advancement in so Many of These Neurologic Diseases and It's These Natural Types of Things That Seem to Keep Coming up As Potential Cures for This and Have Even Had an Opportunity to Have Him Try Something like This Back Then I Did My Right Arm for Combat and I Would Believe That You Don't Get Back That's I Think When You Talk about Suitable Were What Is Referring to Is the Ability to Swallow the Ability to Form Wet so I Remember When Your Dad Would Come Visit and We Would All Go to Your We Would Gather His Residence Would Go to the Pool And She Would Mumble Words That Only a Wife of 30 Years Could Understand and She Would Translate so He Was Still Completely with It Couldn't Communicate but That Kinda Shows Also the Bond That Husband and Wife Can Have Watching Your Mom Be Able to Understand What Your Dad Was Trying to Say Was Very Touching to All of Us In Talking with Him and That's the Part He Hated the Most You Got Your French Don't You Go out Yes and Cocktails Have a Dinner You Care Phone Conversation When You're like That Friends Don't Want to Hang out with You Anymore Because It's Hard and Embarrassing to to Say I Don't Know What You're Saying so There Were Times When My Dad Loved to Drink Beer I like to Drink Beer I Were Small-Town Nebraska I Would Grow up up There so When He Got to That Point in His Disease And He We Had the Decision to Finally A Peg Tube Feeding Put Two But into His Stomach to Swallow Much Anymore When You Come down Here and I Cannot Would Sit around and We Drink Beer and Dad Would Set Some up in Achieving Stringent Squared Together and It Was Awesome and and One of the Greatest Things I Remember Doing with My Dad Back and When He Got to Where He Couldn't Talk Was I Flew up and Picked Him up and Took Him up to Minnesota Went Fishing and Camping for Weekend We Sat around the Campfire We Just Drank until I Can Really Talk Either Loved It but That's What That Disease Did Nothing We Tried Were I Think That What Were Seeing Now with This Is That We Can Talk on the Mode of How Potentially the End of Cannabinoid System Works in These Neurotransmitters No Rust We Have Christmas Song on the Show Today Is the Marketing Director of Licks and All and He Was Just Tell yet He Was Talking about How His Mom Actually Was The Original OG Is Raising Her She Was Growing Marijuana and He Went to Theology School, Rebelled The Opposite Way like If You Are a Pastor You Really Grow Weed If You're Growing We Bellied Theology School You Find out You Know What You Go Back to the Things Parents. It Worked and It Made Sense Mom Was Right I Long Yeah Yeah I Mean I Joke That All the Time. I Grew up My Dad Was Yellow Country Music and Bud Light Not Solid to Rock 'n' Roll and Drink Out Of Date Now 50 and I Listen to Country Music Drink Bud Light Back Here at That Time That Often Did That Because You Find Those Things Were We Did Know Hey Rossiter – Neurology Practice Are You Incorporating Type of Natural Alternative Anything like That Big and Real High Population of People That Are Educated on the Younger Patient Population That I Have an Initial Internet Savvy and A Lot Of Them Come to Me Already Knowing A Lot about These Things and Having Read A Lot about These Things It's All out There When You Look Which Having Awesome so I Do I Have Acrobatic Doctors That I Work with I Have A Lot Of Patients on CD Oils Not Just for Things like This That Were Talking about but My Miles to Christ in Crohn's Patients with Chronic Nausea Patients My Chronic Pain Patients like Everything It Works for Some and It Does Percent Doesn't. Well I Want to See How It Was with What You Can Find Is That and What I Found Is That Not All CBD Is Created Equal And so with Some Things and so We Have Chris on Right Here and That I I'm Very I Think I Have a Similar Mantra Have A Lot Of Patience to Come into Being There Already Though I'd Artie Tried to Be like My Mom Tried Hemp Oil Which Probably Was Hemp Seed Oil Now That I Think about It in the Will and so It's like All Things You Know Not All Seabees Created Equal That's Working to Get into Today for the Rest of the Show Talk about This How Do You Market That How You Get the Word out That Just Because You Tried This Blanket Term CBD You Know You Gotta Really Make Sure That They Got a Certificate of Analysis and All That so I Want to Do If You Had Patients and It Didn't Work on Listing the Rest of the Show Because It May Be That the Power Dialects All Brand Is What You Really Need That's Exactly What We Need to Hear Some I'm Glad You Get Thanks for Involving Me and Bring Back Member My Dad and Mandalay Castle Being Vulnerable and Talking about That I Think It's Important for You Know I'm the Same Way Love Talk about My Dad It's Been You Many Years Now 30 Years since He Died so I'm Lucky Enough Still Have My Dad but My Fondest Memories Are Him Drinking Coors Light on the Boat Name for Court like Nebraska State Aire's Stepdaughter Russ I Was Met Together and That Means That We We with Some Real Lean Years Were We Were Broke Ass Med Student and Your Dad Will Visit And We Would Purposely Go to Bars with a Wood Offers like Specials like in This Bar It Will and You Don't Medical Whatever I'm Agreed As I Am Still a Bud Light like You Have but You Know Such Such Beers like 50% Was like I Was like Yeah Yeah Johnny Jerilyn $4.55 Dollars to Run I Got My Recall and in This Is Awesome That Your First Call Every Now and Certainly I Deftly Appreciated I Appreciate You Guys and Will Keep with the Man Thanks for All You Do Appreciate It I See Russ Well Chris to Talk about Beer Similar Talk about Boys You Know What I'll Say This I Remember Listening to a Podcast Were One of the Reasons Why Beer May Be so Popular Is Because the Hops and Actually Have a End of – You Have a Cannabinoid -like Molecule so My Understanding Is That That Was All Made up All Really Got Some Some Marketing Guy Used His Powers for Evil Instead of Good and That the Two Companies That Are And It Kinda Leaves What You're Talking about Not All Seabees Made Same Two Companies That Were behind Those Actually Had to Admit That There Was Those Studies Were Completely Phone No Kidding Yeah That Is Fascinating I Was Feeling and Have Chris Consider Just Burst Bubble to Be Dropping Some Truth Bombs Now That's Awesome What We Were Just Wrapping up so You To Get into the Hemp Industry Because Krista Talked about His Trek from from Fort Stockton to Plano out to out to California and Then You Spend a Little Time in Germany Germany Where I Did Learn A Lot about Beer Dealer Lot Is Three and Half Years on the High School There and Going to Prom and Castles and All Sorts of Fun Stuff That's a Little Different Doing for like We Did Were in Plano Where I Would've Would've Done It Sure Sure so Then after School You Then Get into Some Regulatory I Figured out This Beeper and Pager and Wireless Things Can Be a Big Deal so I Started Selling Cell Phones and Pagers and You Know Five Dollar Minute Type Technology in and Got into the Technology World and Got into When Sprint Was in One Market You Can Only Use Her Cell Phone in Fresno Okay and Then the Only Been Growing since Then Moved from There into the Finance World and Helped with A Lot Of Regulatory World and There and Open Market under A Lot Of Rules and Regulations and While I Was There I Met a Guy Who Is Doing Documentary on Campus and He Was Put Together All These Different Case Studies and All These Different Videos and Clips of These People That Have Been Healed by Campus and at That Time I Was like No Bunch of Stoners and You Just Want You with the with the Theology Background You Carry a Bias with These Going into These Other Careers Are More Open-Minded at This Point What Based on My Initial Upbringing by My Mom Who Is Very Open Minded I Was I Was Always Questioning Authority and Questioning Things and through That Entire Process Even Going through Theology School I Was Questioning Everything around Me You Know the Minute That and Again I Don't Know How Deep You Want to Get into Religion Here but the Minute That I Heard about Their Profit Care and Oh How They the Canonization of All of the Books and How They Got into the Bible I Started to Start Questioning A Lot More and You Know They Trying Teach You That the Bible Is 100% the Word of God and Then You Decide to Figure out That Is about 15 White Guys in a Room to Decide Which Books Are in the Bible and You Only but Little Doubt in Your Head Sure I Don't I Don't Know That 15 Guys Can Agree about Anything and Deftly When Trust Something like That That's Guiding so Many People's Lives Divided 15 Guys in Room so It's It's Definitely No Been Something I'm Always Open-Minded and Looking at Things and Questioning Things I'm Click to Decide and Slow to Change My Mind so I See Something That's Right and Usually Jump Right in and Stick with It May Be Too Long and Then Dismantled That up but I Learned My Lesson Sooner or Later Click to Decide Slow to Change My Mind That Is a That Is a Great Line This It's like You Make a Decision but You Don't Have To Make the Right Decision to Make Your Decision Right That A Lot Of Times I Mean We've Already It's That Little Cliché but Sure Enough Perfect Is Sometimes the Enemy of Good Brian and I like to Move Fast and Make the Decisions What I What I Believe in My Gut I Think That If More People Moved That Way Things to Get Done A Lot Faster in Love Things I Think Doubt Self-Doubt Challenges A Lot Of Us and from a Marketer And I like to Empower People to Make the Right Decisions and Given the Right Information That I Learned Early on in My Sales Careers That When People Tell You Know It's It's Primarily Because They Don't Have Enough Information to Say Yes the More Information We Can Give Them the More Education We Can Give Them Then They Can Move Forward So It's Just That Self-Doubt That Little Gut Thing That We Need to Move Them on Let Me Answer Question Measured Market Are One of the Things That I Have Run into with My Colleagues to Coworkers and Things Is That When Somebody Is so Entrenched in Their Belief They Get This Cognitive Dissonance Where Guest: Elena (elenapanyard.com) On this episode of the No Zone Layer, we realize that we may or may not already be running low on words that rhyme with zone, and therefore come up with a hastily cobbled-together topic that we can pass off as an episode. Yes, it’s the No Postpone Zone, all about the dreaded—and, for many including ourselves, all too familiar—experience of procrastination. We also consider what each of us would be the patron saint of, work on our tongue twister skills, and compose a jingle to help our audience through times of procrastination, all across the nation, no matter your location. Continuing on How to Do Things with Words (lectures from 1955), covering lectures 5-9. Austin tries and fails to come up with a way to grammatically distinguish performatives from other utterances, and so turns to his more complicated system of aspects of a single act: locutionary, illocutionary, perlocutionary. In doing so, he perlocutionarily blows our minds. Listen to part one first, or get the ad-free Citizen Edition. Please support PEL!
On How to Do Things with Words (lectures from 1955). What's the relationship between language and the world? Austin says it's not all about descriptive true-or-false statements, but also includes "performatives" like "I promise…" and "I do" (spoken in a wedding) that are actions unto themselves. They can't be true or false, but they can be "unhappy" if social conventions aren't fulfilled (e.g., you try to marry a pig). Austin thinks performatives will change your whole view of language and of linguistically expressed philosophical problems! Don't wait for part two! Get the ad-free, unbroken Citizen Edition now! Manu (better known as "Swish") is an inspiring young man, who I knew I wanted to interview as soon as I heard his story. He's a 19 yr old student at the University of Toronto, who ALSO happens to be an award-winning serial tech entrepreneur, a UN Youth Ambassador, an early stage tech investor, and TEDx speaker, JUST to name a few. I wondered, how can someone have accomplished so much at such a young age? How did he know this was even possible? What inspires him? “In no other time in history has it been easier to start a business." In today's interview I find out the core set of beliefs that Swish embodies on a daily basis to continually go after people, projects, and experiences that others would avoid for fear of failure. We also learn who Swish considers to be his biggest mentors, and what is next on the horizon for this 19-yr-old college student. You'll be shocked to hear what he's lined up. Manu is an embodiment of what it means to take bold action. Never held back by age or or location or any other "limitations" that people often use as excuses to keep them from their goals, Manu proves time and time again that anything is possible when you get creative, get persistent, and take bold action. “You don't go to a TEDx talk to learn about things as much as to get inspired to go DO Things." FOLLOW MANU: Website | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | LinkedIn IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN: What beliefs did Manu have to have to accomplish all that he has at such a young age? Who were Manu's mentors and how have they impacted his life and career? What's the one skill that Gary V. has nailed, which Manu is actively trying to learn right now. Manu's tips for connecting with influencers (who may appear to be inaccessible). The #1 skill that has led him to speak at TEDx, and connect with people like Gary V. (hint: it's probably not what you think). The #1 thing you should know if you want to give a TEDx talk. Why the Mentorship Movement is such a positive thing for today's CEOs. How you can leverage LinkedIn to spread your message. Why he believes anyone can become an advocate for a cause. Keynote Anthony Vidler (Cooper Union / Yale University) How to Do Things with Diagrams Convenors: Lukas Engelmann (University of Cambridge) Caroline Humphrey (University of Cambridge) Christos Lynteris (University of Cambridge) Summary Diagrams inhabit a liminal space between representation and prescription, words and images, ideas and things. From key moments of scientific and intellectual innovation (Darwin’s tree-diagram, Levi-Strauss’s diagram of the raw and the cooked, Lacan’s L-scheme, Waddington’s epigenetic landscape image and Francis Crick’s DNA double helix sketch) to everyday uses in all spheres of social, political, economic and cultural life, the diagram seeks resemblance to the empirical yet aspires to generalization. Conversely, employed across the disciplines as a thinking tool, the diagram hence holds the promise of transforming abstract issues into graspable images and translating the unseen into intelligible and actionable form. Both convincing and misleading and always positioned at the threshold of vision and the unseen, diagrams operate as abstractive and constitutive components of empirical realities. This conference aims to explore the interdisciplinary, shared traits of diagrammatic thinking so as to go beyond the notion of simplification, of “drawing information together”, which forms the usual analytical ground for understanding syntactic visualizations in the sciences and humanities. Rather than seeing diagrams as systems of linkages, the aim of the conference is to explore the dialectic of inscription and erasure as an inherent and generative trait of diagrammatic practices. Questions to be raised in the conference revolve around the following themes: How does the visual and logical indeterminacy of diagrams, their resistance to being fully perceived as images or understood as logical arguments, define their operation as ways of reasoning? And to what extent does diagrammatic reasoning extend beyond the realm of diagrams as visual/textual objects? By bringing together ethnographic, historical and philosophical perspectives on the diagram, in its applications across the disciplines, this conference aims to explore its role at the pivot of modern transformations and aporias between abstraction and form.
In episode 26, Jamison and Dave answer these question: How do you make sure people know about your good work? See Matt Zabriskie’s great post for background on this. We also mentioned Do Things, Write About It. How do you get your point across effectively so you don’t have to say “I told you so” later?
Left Of Nashville: A Music Documentary |DIY| Songwriting| Indie Music
In the last episode of Left Of Nashville, I talked about Kevin Kelly’s blog '1,000 True Fans.’ It’s basically the theory that an artist can make a pretty nice living from 1,000 fans who will purchase everything that they produce. But how do we go about this? Well for starters, we should do things and tell people. This will not only help you to reach 1,000 true fans, it will also increase your chances of bringing serendipity or luck into your life. If you remember Episode 6 from the first season of LON, I talked about connecting the dots and how seemingly meaningless things would later connect to game changing events. It’s all about putting pins on the map. Do things, tell people. Aaron Francis has done things and told people. He is the creator of the Music Makers Podcast. I featured an episode of The Music Makers in the Crabs In A Bucket episode. I found Aaron’s podcast when it was on New and Noteworthy in iTunes and I became a fan. After the 1,000 True Fans episode, it became evident that I needed to talk about how one might acquire true fans as well as get noticed by movers and shakers. Then I remembered two episodes of The Music Makers, episode 1, entitled “Do Things, Tell People” and a companion episode called Luck Surface Area. And this is where things get really meta, I mean talk about serendipity. I reached out to Aaron about featuring these two episodes in this episode. I just think that it helps if you hear other people besides me having these theories. Later that day, I listened to the newest episode of The Music Makers, where Aaron announced that that day’s episode would be his final one, at least for now. So I decided that I would use this occasion to pay tribute to one of my favorite podcasts, while explaining how to increase your fanbase and your luck. These episodes stuck in my mind after all these months, and I decided to reference them here, all because Aaron did things and told people. This is the perfect example of how to get your art to make an impression on people. Like I said, this is pretty meta and trippy. Not to mention the irony of using a podcast called The Music Makers (which isn’t about music at all) in my MUSIC DOCUMENTARY podcast to help me make a point. Speech acts debate Mere rhetoric a podcast for beginners and insiders about the people, ideas and movements that have shaped the rhetorical world. Probably one of the best titles of any book in rhetorical history is J. L. Austin’s How to Do Things with Words. In fact, this is often what I tell people is what rhetoric is all about: doing things with words. But actually, Austen had something more in mind when he prepared these 12 lectures for Harvard Universitiy in 1955. All words do something—encourage, persuade, shame— but this philosopher points out that some words are what he calls “performative”—their utterance does something. Think, for example of the phrase “I now declare you man and wife,” which creates a marriage in the utterance, or “I knight you Sir Patrick Stewart” or “We christen this ship the USS Lollipop” which do similar sorts of things through the words themselves. Now Austin doesn’t think that words themselves are the only things that create whatever these performative speech acts create: after all, the state says that only certain people with certain qualifications are allowed to go around to marry or knight or christen. Austin says that speech acts can be “misfired” when the procedure is done incorrectly, under the incorrect circumstances or by incorrect people. If I try to knight you, the act wasn’t false—the words still make sense because there is such a thing as knighting, and they grammatically hang together—but you don’t get to call yourself a knight of the rhelm because the act misfired. The other way that these speech acts can fail to get off the ground is if they’re done insincerely or without the right internal condition. Think of marriages performed in plays or movies, or quoting someone else or any comment you’ve made that you’ve followed up with a “just kidding!” So although Austin is far more complex than that in practice, the crux of his lectures are this: words can do things, unless the authority isn’t right and unless the act was done insincerely. It’s a nice little book—not too big and with a good deal of the wry Britsh academic humor which the 1950s, along with tweed and horne glasses, brimmed with. But it started something more. Speech act theory, as Austin’s ideas became more developed, became the arena of one of the greatest debates in language philosophy: John Searle on the one and hand J. Derrida on the other. Derrida, as you can imagine, was fascinated by much of this, including Austin’s rakish suggestion that we might not know when someone IS being sincere, so how do we know when the act has gone off? If I say, “just kidding” afterwards, does that undo the snide comment? For Derrida, jokes, sarcasm, or fiction don’t invalidate speech acts, because such non-serious or "parasitic" speech are in no way distinquishable from any other speech act: how do we know when someone is being insincere? Searle wrote a short response to Derrida "Reiterating the Differences: A Reply to Derrida", saying that Austin wasn’t including those types of speech as performative speech acts because they were beyond the scope of his argument. In “Limited Inc a b c …” Derrida claims that “no intention can ever be fully conscious” to an author(s) (73). This author(s), so decentralized and unoriginal, is not even necessary to their writing because “writing […] must be able to function in the absence of the sender, the receiver, the context of production, etc.” (48 These insincere utterances, are not simple mistakes of the serious. Derrida states that, “A corruption that is ‘always possible’ cannot be a mere extrinsic accident” (77). In this sense, Derrida reads Austin as viewing “the parasite [as] part of so-called ordinary language, and it is part of it as a parasite” (97); however, before he is done, Derrida will “reverse the order of dependence” and assert that this “so-called ordinary language” is, in fact, a subspecies of the parasite (104). Anyway, they go back and forth like that for a while, which is not surprising, because Searle, as a analytic philosopher has a radically different view on the purpose of philosophy than Derrida the deconstructionist does. Mostly the argument involves the two of them complaining that the other doesn’t understand what they’re trying to do, as well as Searle saying that Derrida isn’t a serious enough philosopher who and Derrida saying Searle needs to remove a stick from his orifice. Enlightening stuff like that. But both of them wanted some claim on Austin’s speech acts. Early in “Limited Inc a,b,c…” Derrida derisively referred to Sarl and (their) ilk as “self-made, auto-authorized heirs of Austin”—those who take themselves as the defenders of a created Austin orthodoxy (37). While Derrida did spend a lot of time talking about copyright, he didn’t spend too much of his limited ink (ha) talking about the implications of claiming and owning the speech act philosophy. He did criticize, heavily, though, the idea that his claim on Austin’s ideas were somehow illegitimate. He chaffed at the title of Sarl’s second chapter—“Derrida’s Austin”—and the claim that “Derrida’s Austin is unrecognizable” (qt in Limited 88, italics in original). Much of what he does in “Limited Inc” is to assert that his (mis?) interpretation of Austin is just as valid a continuing of the tradition as Sarl’s. In fact, there is a Sarl’s Austin as clearly as there is a Derrida’s. And there is also a Sarl’s Derrida and Derrida’s Searle, with caused both philosophers a lot of frustration, often claiming that words and concepts attributed to them were not in the original and making frequent pleas that his interlocutors just read again his original piece and see what was actually there. In some ways, it’s not surprising that an analytic philosopher and a deconstructionist would have a hard time understanding each other’s positions on something as crucial for each of them as whether there is a distinction between serious and non-serious language. But despite the frustration and often pettiness of the debate, I kind of love that it happened. It created some of Derrida and Searle’s best work, as they both engaged the opposition and found news ways to describe their positions on what Austin wrote. When you think about all the pages that Derrida and Searle produced in this particular controversy, it seems like the engagement was fruitful. I don’t wan to editorialize too much, but it seems like sometimes we just disengage with theorists or thinkers we don’t agree with, instead of wrestling with them. Not that I think Searle and Derrida were always scholarly about their disagreement, but I rather like that they took each other seriously enough to engage. So me, for my part, I declare this a Very Fruitful Debate, for which speech act I have absolute authority.
