The world of women's sports is experiencing unprecedented growth, attention, recognition, and investment. Elite athletes including Simone Biles, Caitlin Clark, Serena Williams, and many others are having a significant impact on culture, and more women than ever are participating in both professional and recreational sports. Earlier this year, Russ sat down with Dr. Emily Kraus to talk about the future of female athletic health and we're re-running the episode today. She shared a number of key differences between women and men in sport, and illuminates that these differences are vastly understudied, though she's working to close that gap. This is an episode we shared with a number of athletes we know, and we hope you'll do the same.Have a question for Russ? In this show, I break down and analyze comments from my recent interview with one of the greatest female middle distance runners in the world, the American record holder Shelby Houlihan. It was a pleasure to drive up to Flagstaff, Arizona to meet Shelby at her high altitude training camp as she prepares for her long awaited comeback after a ridiculous four year suspension for a very questionable doping violation. In our interview, which you can listen to here (or click below under "links"), we talked about the tragedy she experienced when she had her career taken from her right in the middle of her prime, right as she was getting ready for the Olympics—then having to sit for four years. You will learn about the nuances of how that whole incident went down and the injustice of the anti-doping system in the world of elite sports. Of course we have to keep these sports clean, but can there be room for some imperfections and some victims too? You will also hear about the many aspects of what it's like to be an elite athlete, how Shelby expanded her horizons and her competitive disposition to try to become a more well-balanced person by getting her master's degree in sports psychology, and much more. Shelby said such amazing, thoughtful comments during the interview, and I think so many of her comments are truly profound insights that will help you as you navigate the very difficult challenge of designing an optimal training program that balances stress and rest (and also keeping your ego in check) as you pursue ambitious competitive goals. These big picture insights are especially helpful now, as the biohacking scene is currently getting a little out of hand—focusing on a regimented, high-tech, glossy, glitzy approach towards pursuing longevity, instead of just covering the basics—and the Blue Zones movement is getting torched by The New York Times’ revelation of the manipulation behind their messaging and how they drew inaccurate conclusions from the data they gathered. It all comes down to basics and consistency, so this show will highlight important insights about Shelby’s approach, from details of her weekly training patterns to how she is deliberate about what she does to unwind and rest during the off competitive season, and how she generally balances the physiological impact training has on her body. Sports medicine physician Emily Kraus knows a lot about the health challenges of female athletes. Women face far more ACL tears and bone stress injuries than men, for instance, and excessive training or poor nutrition can also delay puberty and affect menstruation. These differences are vastly understudied, she says. To close the gap, Kraus initiated the “Female Athlete Voice Project” that asks female Olympic and Paralympic athletes about their health experiences. We need to tailor approaches specific to female athletes, Kraus tells host Russ Altman on this episode of Stanford Engineering'sThe Future of Everything podcast.Have a question for Russ? Chois, Matt, and Jamie discussed the Olympic medal count, if they could train and do an event in four years, the seating total for Texas Tech's stadium, Team USA Basketball, and what they're most excited about for Texas Tech Football.

The guys do more Olympics talk and figure out what events they will watch. There was a movie made by Olympians in the 80s. Audiences loved it but critics did not. A caller thinks the Jets will stink because of their offensive line. Boomer explains part of the difficulty with offensive line play. He still thinks Davante Adams will be traded to the Jets. The AFC West has two awful teams. Jerry returns for his final update of the day and begins with Jazz Chisholm's big night powering the Yankees to a win in Philly. The Mets are about to embark on a crazy road trip. The Moment of The Day involves isolated and manipulated audio. In the final segment of the day, Gio brings up an idea Zoo had off air that he found crazy. What Olympic events could we compete in given 10 years to train?
There's growing calls for disciplinary action against Canada following new developments in their spying scandal. FIFA confirmed proceedings have been opened after support staff were caught flying a drone over two Football Ferns training sessions ahead of tomorrow's match in St Etienne. Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reporter Sarah Leavitt says this has brought shame to Canadian football fans ahead of the match. One former Football Fern is perplexed with Canada amid their attempts to spy on the team. New Zealand has made a formal complaint to the IOC after Canada was caught using a drone to keep tabs on a Football Ferns training session. Maia Jackman says they need to be held accountable for this. "That's pretty bad. That's not what the Olympics are about." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

USC has produced more Olympians, overall medalists, and gold medalists than any other U.S. university. But what has it been like to train during the pandemic for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics? What are some of the surprising ways in which the games of ancient Greece were different from the modern Olympics? What are a few of the nearly 3,000-year-old traditions that haven't changed? Listen in on this lively discussion with political science major and Olympian Tina Graudina of USC's beach volleyball team — the 2021 NCAA champions — and two USC Dornsife scholars of ancient Greece: Vincent Farenga, professor of classics and comparative literature, and Lucas Herchenroeder, associate professor (teaching) of classics. They'll be interviewed separately by USC Dornsife's new student correspondent, history and archaeology major Sean Silvia, host of “Door to Dornsife” and “Archaeologists Anonymous” on YouTube. USC Dornsife Dean Amber Miller provides the introduction. This recording is a part of the Dornsife Dialogues Series.

Olympic and World Champion distance swimming icon Katie Ledecky has the secret sauce, and it’s in the details of Stanford’s Olympic training camp. What I find most interesting is that during the pandemic Ledecky trained with teammate Simone Manuel, and often it was only the two of them, mano a mano. Image that. Team USA’s most celebrated distance star and sprint star training eye-to-eye. I think we’re going to see Ledecky swim well in the shorter events, 100 free and certainly 200 free. Ledecky has already dropped a 1:54 200m free in-season. And I think Simone’s 200 free will be very strong, netting her a spot on the U.S. Women’s Olympic 4×200 free relay. It is this kind of generation that will open the ancient gates for the King of Glory to come in. How can we begin to live a life worthy of the calling upon our lives?

We need to take care of the world first: the Olympics is the world’s game”. -Monica Abbott Softball, after a 12 year hiatus, is again recognized as an olympic sport... but we have to wait one more year to watch Team USA pitcher Monica Abbott and company potentially win gold in Japan. Abbott and fellow pitcher Kat Osterman are the only two players to bridge the gap between the 2008 silver medal winning team and on the upcoming olympic team. Abbott and I talk about: The emotions when USA Softball was informed of the Olympic delay on a team phone call “Life put on hold another year”: A world-class female athlete's perspective on sacrifices “We had a big talk about that”: Thoughts on the possibility of playing in front of not one, single fan Amidst the pandemic, additional significance in wearing "USA" in these upcoming Olympic Games As players, we always replay the plays that we could have changed. What is one play from the 2008 loss in the Gold Medal game that Abbott would change the outcome of? An Olympic delay: staying motivated physically and mentally Pushing the naysaying thoughts from out of your mind A unique perspective on the impact of COVID-19 on those athletes that have lost a season of ball How could the players work to overcome the “lost time” from COVID-19 AT HOME WORK FOR PLAYERS OF ALL AGES: Abbott's conditioning and skill work (with minimal equipment) recommendations How to refocus after a stray thought pops into your mind while playing- examples she’s experienced 2021 OLYMPICS Leveraging experience of playing professionally in Japan to benefit 2021 Team USA softball Has the US Olympic committee debriefed the athletes about the radioactivity in Fukushima? Is Abbott worried? MY FORMER PLAYER'S QUESTIONS: Anna from NJ: What are your thoughts on the mound during an Olympic game? Jenna from NJ: What is your favorite pitch? Why is it so effective? Favorite part about being a pitcher? LISTENER QUESTIONS: John from Long Island Josh from Connecticut Mike from New Jersey For more information about the Abbott Academy, visit: www.monicaabbott.com
